A great way to make progress as a self-taught piano player is to join our Piano Practice Club! We practice pieces from a monthly practice list and meet once a month to share our experiences learning the pieces, share recordings, and I teach you along the way! Membership is free and all you have to do is join our discord to become a member: discord.gg/Tj7Az8TdkY
I want to add to the motivation section. With regards to the so called boring stuff, the scales/3rds in scales, chords in scales
6th in scales , octaves, technical exercises and everything in a similar class, you have to think about how these boring things will get you to the goal , put in the work through your mind really think about how these things benefit you , and show up like a professional even if you don’t feel like it , just do it. Do the practice and think about the benefits over and over and over. Eventually you train the reward system in your mind to putting in the work as a dopamine release and this is the ultimate area you want yourself in.
Thank you so much. You're helping this church pianist! My goal is to continue learning ways to improve my hymn and choir playing....
Tim has to be the best piano beginner-intermediate teacher ever on youtube.
Your content is quite useful, informative, and amazing Tim!
Thank you it's so helpful
Thank you for helping me out without you my hands wouldn't have synchronized with each other now i am officially playing my favorite waltz i am so grateful for your help.
Rock on!
Thank you!
You are the GOAT.
Hey, love the channel. What’s are your thoughts on the finger power series books?
It's so funny that you've been recommending this Alfred book, since I've had it for a while and never opened it. I became really focused on learning the piano this past month, and you have been very helpful. Thank you so much! Expect my submission for one of the beginner pieces on Discord :)
Mate, you are amazing. I love your channel. I've got you on my big TV. Sat at my piano ready to follow. I think everything is well structured. Love it. Keep up the good work.
I ordered the Alfred book using your link. Hopefully it helps you.
Fantastic. You are an excellent player. I am also named Tim and I am a total hack who has developed very bad habits over the years, (hitting two keys with one finger comes to mind). And my theory is horrible. I am an ear player who needs to get some discipline. I gravitate towards the B3 organ sound, but it's all keyboard and all the same of course. I recently gave up my lessons and am looking to continue my musical education. I like your approach more than any others I have seen on you tube and I have seen a lot. I have "hit the wall" big time and need to learn how to punch through.
I have been playing piano for just over 2 months ago and I started undertale a week ago. I am a big fan of the undertale OST's already and to see you write 'Learn megalovania' @2:25 gave me a very 'this world is a small place' vibes haha. It is very true though, it is a dream to play any one of Toby Fox's masterpieces one day .
All great advice especially making time to practice daily. I usually do my practice at 1am do to my job, of course my kid yells out that I’m a weirdo 😂
I actually got that book and it's been a bit intimidating to say the least... I'll keep trying of course.. thanks for the vid..
Here is a course where I go through a very similar book. ruclips.net/video/xRBSsoYYBSw/видео.html
Hey Tim, what do you think about the Pianote Foundations books as a way of learning?
Any advice for someone that’s learning piano that also plays another instrument? I’m a guitarist and I’m well aware of the notes on the keyboard thanks to music theory in college.
I don't do discord because i already spend a frustrating amount of time online, but that piano practice club idea sounds awesome. Are you mindful to choose different difficulties in songs?
Can you give link of that book!! Pls
The method book you have also has another version. It has the same pieces but it includes additional instructions. It's an adult self taught version. The one you have is geared towards having a teacher.
True. You are talking about this one right? amzn.to/3fuwtga
@@LessonsOnTheWeb no its a different book. I don't know if you have a setting on comments to not allow links ... any comments I make with links disappears so I can't share a link to Amazon.
The book is called Alfred's Self-teaching Adult Piano course
It has additional information which they call a self Teaching Study guide . Another Two differences are ... as far as I can tell it does not come comb bound so it won't sit flat and the 2 last songs are not in it.
Hey I have a question! I have that same book and have been following your courses how long does it take to finish the first book usually ?
depends on the student. I would say several months to a little over a year on average.
I bought the set of three of this book. I have been following your lessons on this book and I hope you will do the next two books. My goal is to be able to play Cannon in D.
Also a goal of mine! Good luck!
Cannon in D is beautiful. Keep playing, stay motivated and surely you’ll get there
Is this book contain a CD???
Can we learn music theory through all of the sources online and through books...Also, can we become capable enough to write a song with the melody, through self teaching?
The answer is yes. The internet has basically every single source out there for teaching you music. The difference is having the one-on-one connection for correcting your mistakes. Be honest with yourself, and work on the things you struggle with, not the things you feel you've mastered. Of course, you want to practice all the fundamentals, but try to get a grasp on the things you don't understand currently. Then, it's a snowball effect and you will start seeing a ton of progress.
The official answer is yes to both of your questions.
@@Daniel-nm2qb hi there. You sound like you know what your talking about.
I'm fresh out of school and I have a year before university. I want to learn music but I'm not sure if my direction is right.
I'm at ground zero when it comes to music so far. I'm using the ABRSM music theory books for grade1 thats goes up to gr5. I'm also using a book called how to read music in 30 days by Mathew ellul.
I have my own notebook that I make summaries in and I'm planning to use past papers to test my knowledge as i progress.
I just wanted to know if you can give me some advice on my technique to self study music theory or am I completely off the map?
My dream is to be able to sight read piano pieces one day, but am I at the right starting point???
Please help me.
Sincerely from south africa

What subscription level should I start out at ? Student or pupil tier I'm an adult beginner
Hello Karen,
Either level will be good as a beginner. Channel members will gain access to additional live streams throughout the month. Pupil tier and above will get additional streams and some videos will be posted early to them. I'm pretty sure you can upgrade memberships, so you can start at student and go to pupil if you decide to later. Totally up to you and any level you may sign up for is very much appreciated!
@@LessonsOnTheWeb Than you so much for the reply I think I will start out on the Pupil teir, I have ordered the flash cards, All in One Course level 1 and Piano scale book everything will arrive Monday so I will join Monday getting very excited I live in a rural area and no one available to give lessons I'm looking forward to get started!
Are you a fan of The Animals? Or is House Of The Rising Sun a popular request for beginners/intermediates? Nice practice tips. Thank you.
I am
@@deadmanswife3625 Nice.
I have an Alfred "complete rock keyboard method and house of the rising sun is the very first song it teaches
@@supernothing77 That’s great. I was just wondering why Tim used their video because he’s a lot younger than I am and I found it an interesting choice.
