A couple of months ago I decided to take up piano. I also decided to learn to read music. (Two new tricks for an old dog) A problem I ran into with the music reading is that the lessons I found always involved a simple melody. I’m ear trained, so any simple melody I play one time is automatically memorized in my brain whether I like or not. So after the first pass I know what’s coming instead of actually reading the notes on the staff, AND just as you said, the exercises aren’t very long. So I bought your sight reading book. (Don’t spend all that money on hookers and blow, Matthew) IT’S PERFECT! The notes are totally random and force me to READ THE MUSIC, and there’s plenty of it! I actually enjoy the practice and speeding up the metronome. You did a really great job on this. Thanks!

Hi Matthew, I am an advanced beginner if that makes sense. I have been playing for about 8 months. I have the scales cold. I work on finger exercises to strengthen and build dexterity. I play chords and chords and chords. BIG PROBLEM. Hand independence. I can play a lot of stuf with my right hand and left hand mirroring each other. But, getting them to play independently like YOU. OUCH, it hurts. I have talked to several teachers who tell me that everyone has this problem and you need to stick with the exercises to develop hand independence. Is this sound? Is there any way that i can get this down cold? It is the only thing that is holding me back. I have watched several of your videos and WOW I really like them. Keep making more. Eryka

That’s very exciting! I don’t think there will be much that you will need to do before hand if it’s your first lesson, your teacher will probably teach you the basics of reading music, what the notes on the piano are etc.. and be able help you with things that you find challenging! 😊

Hello, do you have any particular recommendations on learning jazz piano theory and improvisation ? If you or anyone reading this comment have any particular RUclips videos, websites, courses or books to recommend to learn in the most efficient and comprehensive way, I'll be very happy to hear from you !
Man, I wish I had a acoustic/electric piano. When I was little I could naturally play by ear and was pretty good. In all seriousness I lost it around puberty and have never had an opportunity to get back to it 😕
Luckily I already know treble clef from playing violin for about 5 years now but I know I’m gonna struggle remembering what key is what note on a piano since there are so many keys. Got any tips to help by chance?
I'm totally new to the piano (actually planning to start with an organ\keyboard, is that different by a lot?) or playing music at all, anyone got recommendations on where to start and should I organize and prioritize all the things I should learn?
I hope you read my comment but i only have a 1987 yamaha with 48 keys, how should i go about learning? So far i have learned the notes and the keys and landmarks and have a bit of sight reading skill but lack of keys on some songs lead me to only learning the melody with my right hand. I do hand independence exercises from pianote videos though.
I currently play on midi controller with semi-weighted keys. What are the reasons for weighted keys? Do they have better dynamic range or is it to better mimic real piano?
Hello I started playing on a keyboard with 61 keys back in august. Self taught because I can’t afford lessons. Also I’m 24 years old. I feel like I’m all over the place and really have no idea on what I should I be learning or practicing first. I would like to get into playing classical but also pop. What should I be practicing on a daily to get comfortable with the layout of my keyboard? Should I be learning Chords, scales, arpeggios, how to read sheet music? I’ve been trying to learn songs but only seem to learn bits of a song and never played a full song yet. Any advice is needed thank you :) also been trying finger exercises.
What’s the difference between weighted keys and graded hammer action? I’m looking at getting a new keyboard and aren’t sure to get… which would be the closest to a real piano?
Thanks for the video. Is there anything I can do as an absolute beginner that has yet to buy my first piano? I have been saving up to buy one for the last few months and I'm interested in learning - but have nothing to play on yet. I'm honestly just learning for pure passion and interest. So, this nothing official nor graded. I considered learning to read sheet music while I save but is that a good place to start? Or should I really wait until I have a piano in front of me? I was going to buy the Casio CT-S1 61 simply because thats all I can afford - but I do want to eventually transition to an 88 key once I worked my way up there. Though I am considering I may have to save a bit longer to afford an 88 key digital piano.
I have been playing piano self taught for years along with various other instruments (both self taught and with lessons) and I must say learning piano self taught has has shown huge benefits to my theory knowledge and understanding. I think if someone wants to learn piano self-taught it's a good idea to have some prior music knowledge since without it it could be quite hard, and maybe learning another instrument on the side with lessons would be very beneficial.
Any advice on how to manage the last 10% of songs? I'll typically take a piece like Einaudi's Nuvole Bianche and get it to 80 or 90% where I can play any part reasonably well. But no chance of getting through the entire piece without errors. And then I realize it doesn't make sense to keep practicing the same piece for months and I'll jump to something else. But then there's this nagging feeling that never ONCE have I played it really well
I bought an 88 key partially weighted keyboard yesterday and I honestly an lost on where to start so I started learning the song golden hour by jvke because its just a very pleasant piece I have never played an instrument before and Im 17 should I buy the sight reading book because im still a little bit lost on where to start

Eryka
Thank you ❤
Very good video, thank you
I like video games so I just looked up ss Anne n started playing. Learning sheet music and all that is intimidating and time consuming. I’ll get there eventually but me personally if I had to do all that I would’ve never even started.
Love the channel. As you are one of the only people who have mentioned it. What route would you recommend for the electronic music producer ?
Hello, i have been playing piano for 10 years, I want to learn how to play by ear. I have never learned chords and how they work, does anyone know a good book to learn them?
What's the difference between the 'Discovering Music Theory' volume of books and 'Music Theory in Practice'? Do I need one set, or better to get both?
Can you do a video or direct me to one about how to train our hearing to know what key a singer is on
Great vid!
What Electric Piano would you go for as a beginner? What prize range?
Thanks for the great insights and motivation 😊
1:04 An 88-key weighted piano/keyboard with a sustain pedal
I found one recently for £125
Fantastic video! I've recently decided to learn the piano and I' m going to have my first lesson in a week. Do you have any tips - what should I do or learn before meeting my piano teacher ? ( as I am a complete beginner)
That’s very exciting! I don’t think there will be much that you will need to do before hand if it’s your first lesson, your teacher will probably teach you the basics of reading music, what the notes on the piano are etc.. and be able help you with things that you find challenging! 😊
@@matticawood thanks a lot. Now I am a little bit less stressed (: Merry Christmas!
Interesting video and I took away some good learning points. I just wish you would slow down a little with your delivery. It was very quick and I was a little breathless at the end of it.
Hiii this video has really inspired me but I have a question!!! Lessons aren't really an option for me, because of several reasons (mostly money), but I want to try and learn piano propely with the grades. Is it possible for me to teach myself with resources and pass a grade one exam? Or are lessons essential to learning things i need to know to pass? Also, if it is possible, do you know of any good books or channels or ither resources that would be helpful? Thank you so so much 🙏🙏🥳🥳
I my going to be a self taught piano player. Immediately goes to you tube!
10:14 if the stickers on the piano only show the stave location, surely that’s a good thing to aid learning?
Hello, do you have any particular recommendations on learning jazz piano theory and improvisation ? I'm a music producer and my main goal is to be able to improvise complex jazz chord progressions in the studio. I'd say im a low to medium level classical pianist with 21 years of age. If you or anyone reading this comment have any particular RUclips videos, websites, courses or books to recommend to learn in the most efficient and comprehensive way, I'll be very happy to hear from you !
thank you sir
"Putting your hand upside down" I often have that issue 😂
Thumbnail totally me! 😂
Great video. Is there a similar one as it relates to guitar?
Man, I wish I had a acoustic/electric piano. When I was little I could naturally play by ear and was pretty good. In all seriousness I lost it around puberty and have never had an opportunity to get back to it 😕
I would love to learn how to doodle to sound a little bit like KJ
i have a 76 key keyboard with no sustain pedal, am i cooked?
Bro same 😭
Yes
I think if you have at least 1 full scale, you should be good.
Or you just buy a new keyboard. I got mine for £125
Luckily I already know treble clef from playing violin for about 5 years now but I know I’m gonna struggle remembering what key is what note on a piano since there are so many keys. Got any tips to help by chance?
I'm totally new to the piano (actually planning to start with an organ\keyboard, is that different by a lot?) or playing music at all, anyone got recommendations on where to start and should I organize and prioritize all the things I should learn?
Can you do a video about the journey of learning piano as a music producer
Im at the point where's the scale that i familiar with was c scale. I can't play scale with the black notes, idk why is that.
VERY NICE VIDEO!
Good thanks
Thanks ❤❤
How's your music journey?
Are there any videos on intro to music theory that you would recommend?
What’s the difference between weighted keys and graded hammer action? I’m looking at getting a new keyboard and aren’t sure to get… which would be the closest to a real piano?
Thanks for this. It’s given me a great framework to attack my piano learning, lots of things I would have never considered!
How do i play any song in any key on the piano
Thanks!
No problem! 😊
@@matticawood have sent a video for the new format, am excited to watch it!
Great stuff, there has been quite a lot submitted so it may turn out to be several videos! 😊
I’m watching this in need but I already know how to play beethoven moonlight Sanata 3 mov.
But then there's this nagging feeling that never ONCE have I played it really well
I don't have the funds for 88 keys so ima get the Yamaha 61 keys
Thanks for tips! Curioua about what keyboard are you using on your videos?
I bought an 88 key partially weighted keyboard yesterday and I honestly an lost on where to start so I started learning the song golden hour by jvke because its just a very pleasant piece I have never played an instrument before and Im 17 should I buy the sight reading book because im still a little bit lost on where to start
Please do not start with that song
@@zardogeI instantly felt bad for that person, you cant learn a song without music theory lol its like trying to learn a language by memorizing phrases
