    The Tubes are the most underrated band in the history of Rock and Roll. They deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

    • @frankz2761
      @frankz2761 8 лет назад +11

      Definitely. They had some very good numbers and I saw a lot of rock concerts in my life, got the chance to see them two times in Brussels (waaaaaaay back in time...I mean at the beginning of the 80's) and they were just brilliant ! Actually those were the most spectacular rock concerts I ever saw : rock, cabaret, parody, tongue-in-cheek or gross humor (like Zappa sometimes did, to shock people), costumes, lots of things going on on stage, fun for the band and the audience... The musicians were fantastic and Fee Waybill is/was a stagebeast... O-ver-whel-ming... :)
      I liked their first albums but I think they came to their best sound and compositions with "Remote Control" and "The Completion Backwards principle" that were made after this concert from 1975. They absolutely deserve a place in the Rock'n'roll hall of fame, you're damned right !
      And thanks for this great video document whoever posted it !

      R&R Hall of Shame is about sales and popularity . Just like the Academy awards . We should start an online monetizing website to collect funds for a Tubes monument next to the property of the Cleveland r and r Hall of Shame

      I'll be honest, I was hoping for more...
      I like the manic-ness of the stage show, but the music, at best, sounds dated. At worst, just not good. Kinda unmemorable.
      I mean, it's '75, so in rock history there is still a lot to come, but with what I've heard about The Tubes, and what I hoped for, this was kind of a letdown.
      I think it was a 'You had to be there (and on dope) to get it' situation.

      Absolutely! They were HUGE in the SF Bay area before their "commercial" success with "She's A Beauty" and "Talk To Ya Later". The other thing close to "early" Tubes was Zappa & the Mothers.

      Met them at a signing at Tower Records on Thomas Rd.
      Got a laugh out of Fee when we presented a bicycle tube for his autograph.
      He corralled the rest of the band and we got all their signatures. Free tix, too.

    Thank you, thank you for posting. Saw them in early '76. No way you could convey this concert to anyone. You have to see it. Amazing show. Extremely talented musicians! Using video long before anyone else. Too far ahead of their time. Spooner and Steen, thanks foe the great guitar licks. Prairie Prince, what a drummer. Great work with XTC. Fee Waybill. You were born to entertain.

    Man, Roger Steen on WPOD is simply amazing. Prairie, too. This band is so much heavier and brilliant than their couple hits in the 80's would suggest. Tubes Forever.

  • @2112Relayer
    @2112Relayer 5 лет назад +8

    Pure genius...in just their first two albums, they explored new wave, disco, rockabilly, classic rock, greaser rock, progressive rock, flamenco and probably a dozen other styles that I've missed.
    Growing up during the 70's and 80's, I had heard of The Tubes but never really paid much attention, considering them a novelty act. I may be over 40 years late, but I'm so glad that this music exists.

    • @lwest1504

      I wrote them off as a novelty act as well. This may be (arguably) the most sophisticated, comprehensive band that ever existed. The level of execution blows my MIND!

    Thanks for posting this concert and the additonal info. There's no doubt about it, they're all as mad as a box of frogs, albeit an extremely talented, entertaining box of frogs. I saw them a couple of years ago in London and met the band after the gig. What a privilege to be able to thank, in person, the people who have brought such a lot of joy into my life through their music. I'm going to see them in Bristol in August this year, can't wait. Take care.

      The same for me in Denver in, I guess, 2009. Small club, maybe 200 people. I actually got to talk to Ric Anderson for several minutes in the crowd before the show. What a GOOD dude. And I got to meet Fee, Ric, Prairie, and Roger after the show and sign my CDs. WHAT a good group of guys. I only wish they would do a reunion tour with all the surviving members of the band, including Mike Cotten and Bill "Sputnik" Spooner. "Tied for the number one group in the world"? BULLSHIT!

    So sadly underrated. Mostly due to the fact that alot of their stuff never got radio play due to length or content. The Tubes, like many other bands (Black Oak Arkansas comes to mind) had to be seen live to really be appreciated.

    The video doesn't clearly show that after they stacked up the "amplifiers," both stacks came crashing down on a dramatic note. I actually fell for it at first as a teen. And other stuff happened, like during the music, a kid would run up to the stage with an album and Fee would sign it, they'd have a few words then, Fee would punch the (planted) kid right in the face and he'd get knocked out.. These shows were absolutely amazing.
    Even in the later years with the scaled down shows (because as you can guess from this show they were losing hundreds of thousands of dollars)they were hilarious. For example, there was a song on the Remote Control album that had a great roaring saxophone solo. Live, they played the verses of the song, and when it was nearing the instrumental, Fee walked out on stage with a huge tenor sax and it was like, "Wait--HE'S going to play that solo????" He puts the sax in his mouth and he's blowing and you can't hear anything while the band is playing the back-up music. Fee takes it out of his mouth and starts pointing at the sound guys and tapping the microphone and shrugging his shoulders as if the mics weren't working. GREAT stuff!
    Other notes: Keyboardist Vince Welnick went on to play for the Grateful Dead, and later unfortunately committed suicide after a cancer diagnosis and years of depression. The other Tubes keyboardist/synth player/art designer Mike Cotten, has gone on to be a MAJOR show and content designer. He's done Diana Ross and Michael Jackson tours, among other newer artists and has staged the Super Bowl and Olympics. See www.mcotten.com

    Discovered this amazingly brilliant band as a 16 or 17yo after seeing an outlandish group pic in a US music mag. I just had to hear them and I adored their music. Bought all their albums up to Completion Backwards Principle. Fast forward to now and I have just watched this concert. It is the first time in my life I have seen a Tubes concert, the good ol Tubes, all 8 of them plus entourage. Fucking blew my mind. How so many musos can weave such a captivating and brilliant sound amazes me and always has. I never knew Michael Cotten was such a mover! Seeing the band singing together, creating those brilliant harmonies ... Vale Vince Welnick. What a band. WOW. Rick Anderson is a fabulous bassist and his long hair is great. Prairie Prince ... outstanding. Roger & Sputnik supply more than enough and Fee ... a brilliant voice and such a presence. So fuckin' good!!

    Number of people commenting on the quality of this video and that it is in black and white. I believe that it was recorded as were all gigs by Winterland themselves and not intended for public release. Black and white film would have been muncher cheaper. There is an amazing Kiss gig from 1975 also out there as well.

    I saw this show in October 1975 at Masonic Temple in Detroit. Blew my mind !!! A friend of ours was at the concert, and so high on downers and beer that he stayed in the back of the half empty auditorium instead of sitting with us in out 15th row seats. He finally decided to come down and sit with us late in the concert, and as he walked down the main aisle, Fee chased him back to the rear of the auditorium with the chainsaw. Classic moment seeing him run back down the aisle.

    There are bands I love. But the Tubes are the clearly most unsung. The Good Rats another, but at a different plain. I was blessed to photo shoot these guys twice in 2011/2012. Amazing people.

    the drummer is amazing style
    Tight one of my favourite drummer. The band great. Prince. Forget his first name.
    Good times and days.
    If I had a time machine I'd be
    Back and leave this this mad
    And dangerous world behind.
    Do you agree.
