I Rebuilt My $1,000 BMW F10! - Full Rebuild!

- Опубликовано: 6 окт 2024
- This is the full rebuild my $1,000 2011 BMW 535I X Drive F10 underwent from start to finish! I Spent around $8,250 to get this bad boy back to a perfect daily driver! The N55 intake camshaft was starved of oil and seized to the head causing the intake cam adjuster to snap off and free spin. So after an engine rebuild, we did some tasteful mods including lowering springs, catless downpipe, upgraded intercooler, and an MHD and xHP tune! After a full detail of the car because it was filthy and just like that we have a perfect daily driver!

dude you've done so much without a lift props
Thanks! I would love a lift so I can film underneath the car more but for now we rollin with the jack stands!
how dirty this car is really tells you how the pevious owner neglected the car.
Oh yea! Who would've thought the car with the passenger footwell full of trash never had oil changes either lol 🤣
@@ShawnzeyRacing exactly 😂
I love how you work. I am exactly like you. You save whatever you can and repair it, not just throw it away. You have my sub my friend.
Happy to have you here!
Amazing work. Really great to go through the whole process with you. i bought a $2500 mercedes s430 2005 and completely renovated it. But you are SO muchmore ambitious than I ever will be. Great work!
Thanks for coming along! My ambition is biting me in the butt with my latest project though lol! It can be a curse too :)
Cars are so cheap in the West where hourly rates for mechanics are high....DIYers can get things for pennies over there... this BMW would cost 7000€ here in Balkans in this condition...
Watching from Jamaica, I loved this! It’s trending 2 days since I’ve been watching this video 😂. Great job!
Thanks for watching! :) appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed it!
Perfect DIY video, this will guide many N55 owners. I have 2 of these in an X3 and a 5535xi just like yours. These cars are great but most owners dont want to maintain them and toss them out around 100K miles. Good job!!!
Thanks! Yea these BMW are starting to be more affordable to more people. Unfortunately a lot of them don't like the maintenance prices for a BMW lol
One of the most satisfying videos I’ve seen in a while
Glad you enjoyed! Check out my GR Supra build and let me know what you think so far! It's a bit bigger of a project then this one lol
Cars like this in Germany even with broken engine will still cost around 8-10k I don’t know how in America you find cars so cheap
Most Americans want trucks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not much demand for these cars in our market. Which is nice when you want to buy it! But now that I'm trying to sell it it's taking forever to sell lol.
I have watched many tear down for 535i and i can say that his video is for best instruction for biginners.
Awesome to hear that!
Just finished doin my oil filter housing gasket and valve cover thinking it was hard. Man you just built a car with no lift! Subscribed
Everyone starts somewhere! I started on a 2002 Subaru WRX slamming it with coil overs lol now I'm doing this. Thanks for watching and subbing!
That's a great deal of work and patience. You really found your love fixing up bad cars lol. Great job in explaining everything keep up the great work
Thanks for always watching and commenting! I do my best to teach what I can
I haven't seen such a beautiful video for a long time
Thank so much I appreciate it ♥
Awesome rebuild. Please please please check your rear door card vapor seals. I did something very similar to you with a 2011 528i and one day it rained and the rear carpet was absolutely flooded. Basically the rear vapor seals have that gummy urethane seal that comes off and water gets in. Absolute nightmare but its super easy to address before it happens!
It's nuts you say that! I literally just saw my rear carpet was wet after heavy rain! The timing on your comment is absolutely crazy timing lol thanks so much
@@ShawnzeyRacingaw man ya its definitely those vapor barrier seals. I got a new eurethane bead roll on amazon and redid the whole seal and now all is good. I ended up having to buy a new used carpet cause i couldn’t get the mold and smell out or the foam
i also bought a 2011 535xi for dirt cheap.. $1400 canadian. (about 1k usd) i dont think the damage to the engine will be the same . as mine died while idling with the ac on.. had to be low on oil beforehand & the previous owner didnt know/didnt care. the only difference is i got the M sport spec.. ive got an idea for the body (bodykit) i may try to repair the engine, but i definitely want to see what the damage looks like. i definietely need to change out my interior (cream) to something i actually like (black). this video series is like watching my journey before it starts.. great job btw
Thanks! and good luck with your project as well! sounds like it should go pretty well :)
@@ShawnzeyRacing trying to get the trunk open right now & nothing is working.. can't even put it in neutral to move it. Today isn't good. Can't even remove the back seats because I need in the trunk to get the remaining bolts.. pass through is blocked too
oh man the trunk situation is rough I know all about it! I had to take my back seats out completely to give me room to get back there! And to get mine in neutral what I did was push to start and let the engine crank over and then hold the shifter forward I believe for 5 seconds. Would have to google to make sure that's right for yours too but I think that's right.
@@ShawnzeyRacing i tried to take the back seats out but the back rests are stuck, so i need to spend more time on them. yeah thats how you have to put it in neutral. us in north america didnt get the manual option (in cabin) we only got the one below the car. guess they were worried about car theft of something.. found this out after buying the tool (the red hammer). will have some free time on thurs to try again
Brothe amount of time and effort is something else love the video bro, wish you the best
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching :)
if you use MHD and XHP. you should select the manual transmission / AT XHP option in MHD
You are correct! Missed that the first time thank you
Cleaning all this without gloves is crazy
Gotta be a little crazy sometimes ya kno
@@ShawnzeyRacing suggest gloves when you discover hypodermic needles!!!!!
The clicking noise on the cam gears/ vanos are supposed to be there. I’ve done multiple m62 guides, and they all click when turning the engine over. I believe there is tension in the vanos
Yea definitely my consensus as well!
No issues once it has oil pressure
Great work on the F10 though.
This rebuild is a labour of love haha.. Where did you learn all this and is this your full time job?
No I'm actually a software engineer full time! I've just been tinkering with cars for around 10 years now :)
I watch a lot of RUclips and I've worked on a lot of personal cars and friends car and that's where I've picked up most of my knowledge. And I definitely do love this car it's been an amazing daily driver! Only selling it to try and keep making cool RUclips videos :)
Awesome job. I loved watching this. My first ever BMW was a 2013 535. Loved ever mile. Looking forward to more videos from you.
Glad to hear you enjoyed! Catch up on the current GR Supra build so your ready for my next video! :)
There is no $$$ amount that would add on to the memories your grand father had with it. Remember money always come & go. As fast as u can make it u can spend it 10x faster. If that’s the mustang ur grandpa left u it’s a must need to stay n the family
The Chevelle has been an amazing father son project and I never plan on selling it! :)
Dang gotta sell it 😢but you’ve done quite well with completely overhauling the car definitely impressive 🎉
Thanks! I love the car and may end up keeping it. Only reason I will sell it is to keep the RUclips channel going!
Awesome content man! You have a new subscriber just watched the full video first video I’ve watched much love from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Thanks for being here! Check out the next build on the GR Supra to catch up and get ready for the next videos coming soon! :)
Plz keep doing this type of videos with sedan’s like Mercedes bmw or Audi 🙏🙏
Of course! I want to work on all sorts of cars! Everything and anything as long as I think it's cool
Amazing video from start to finish! 🥰
Appreciate it!
Congratulation brou! 🙏🏻🙌🏻☝🏻💪🏻👍🏻 Super video
Thanks for watching :) I appreciate it
@@ShawnzeyRacing You well come brou
nice job greetings from Romania
Hello from the Midwest of the USA 👋:) Glad your here hope you enjoyed!
@@ShawnzeyRacingthanks for replying, I enjoyed it because I love f10 I also have an f10
Don't forget to check the piston's to see if the rings are ok remember you didn't have compression on two cylinders
I did in fact take piston 3 and 4 out and inspect them but none of the other ones. And we had such a wide range of compression just because the intake camshaft was seized and some of the valves were in the open position. But I do agree I should've checked all the pistons rather then just a couple. But it's running great now :)
Good job brother I realy enjoy this vedio and you one by one explain properly.❤
Glad you enjoyed!
Bought an equinox. Needs head gaskets runs ok. Paid. 600. Sold wheels for 400. And wrong battery for 100. Put on my $66 wheels. And got 50 battery. Into it for $216. Might do heads
Nice! There are good deals out there if you want and can do the work! It's nice being able to do your own work and save or even make money!
Really nice series, well done! What do you plan as a next project? Any ideas yet?
Already working on a 2021 Toyota GR Supra! :) have episodes released on it already. The GR Supra project is an enormous task in comparison to the BMW here, it's quite the big step in project XD
ohhh..that engine did not see a lot of oil changes..
Also, my feelings are hurt that you didn't pull out the gas pedal out to clean up behind it because it is awfull back there :D:D
Definitely not enough of them 😂
Awesome video brother. Excited for your next project. Maybe we can see a B58 in the future? 👀
Next project is a B58! Already got videos posted on a 2021 Toyota GR Supra go check out the 3 videos to catch up on the progress ill be posting the next episode soon!
I don’t know how I came to your channel but good job 👏
You got a new subscriber and I hope I see more of your content
It means the world to me thank you!
This is awesome! Would love to see more content like this
Hopefully you subscribed! Currently working on a 2021 Toyota GR Supra which is just a BMW Z4 technically 😀

at 1:19:51 you torque the last bolt of the oil pomp at 180° ...the oters bolts you torqued at 90°
i hope its not a problem for your engein
super video ✌👌
Yes the short ones were 90 degrees and the long one is 180 degrees! Good looking out thank you 🙂
Love the content.... I noticed the shake in the cabin, similar to the one I had due to bad transfer case.... look into that....
Any shake was probably my cheap Amazon GoPro mount XD I don't notice anything while driving but I'll pay extra attention next time I drive see if I notice anything :)
You'll get the fame you deserve sooner or later!
The nicest thing I've heard all day 😭
Lol thanks for watching!
you make this bmw rebirth
Gotta keep the cool cars alive!
Thank you for the video! I wonder how many hours you put into it. Thanks!
I don't keep track but I should've lol. Each episode was around 10 hours of video to edit and of course I do some work off camera too so a safe estimate would be 80 hours of work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Could be way off...
This video is great. Love the content. When editing future videos, please level out the voices and music. When you flip to time lapse I almost lost an eardrum. RIP headphone users! ❤
Sorry! :) I think my next video coming out is much better on the background music though! This BMW was my first RUclips series so definitely learned a lot each video. Thanks for commenting and watching, I appreciate you!
Trying to figure out your accent, doesn't sound like a 228 area code. I'd definitely be at your shop😂 great work
Thanks! I'm up north in South Dakota :)
Good job done nicely so Mr.🎉

This long video is just the episodes from my series cut together ezpz!
you’re mad talented
Thanks!
Super super loving it from South Africa
Thanks! Its awesome to have an audience all over the world :)
You’ve been having a pressure washer all this time 😂🤣
Yea :) no water hose in the shop so I would've had to carry it all the way to the house :( so far away lol
I'm at 2:14:27 and you just got the engine back into the car. You had some text on the screen that said "What could I possible miss?" lol and I'm gonna guess you forgot the engine ground.
I did forget 1 ground that connects to the transmission lol Bigger than that though I forgot a bolt holding on the transmission cooler lines and had to get towed back to the shop because all my transmission fluid was no longer in the car lol mistakes happen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@ShawnzeyRacing Oh shit, that's serious! I totally get it-every time I do a job, like replacing the valve cover gasket on my 2015 F10, I’m constantly second-guessing if I got everything back together right. I've been working on cars since I was a kid, but every little noise still makes me think I messed something up, even when it's nothing. I can only imagine the stress of driving a car after going that deep into a repair. But honestly, even with that mistake, it sounds like you did a great job overall. Like you said, mistakes happen, especially with a big job like that. And hey, you often learn more from mistakes than when everything goes perfectly!
Oh for sure! I learn the most when I mess something. Especially when it costs me a bunch of time and money lol.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed !
👍👍👍👍👍, samo rukavice drugi put...
Gloves would be smart 😂
Great effort, great video.
Your exactly right! I have 8 episodes on this BMW and I decided that some may like the full build in one video so I'm combined them all. It's something I've seen others do I decided to try it out :)
Great stuff!

Welcome aboard! Glad your here :)
love the video man 👍🏻, keep it up
Appreciate it! thanks for watching :)
Pretty sure the small radiator was the heat exchanger
The small radiator hoses connect to the big radiator so I think it's just additional cooling but could be wrong
Think was advisable to replace the oil pump just to be safe coz u don't know if was the cause of the problem or poor maintenance
An excellent idea! So far we haven't had any low oil pressure lights or check engine lights so I think the pump is good to go but it was a gamble! If the oil pump was bad it would've sucked to replace in the car lol.
When a you almost got uppercut by your car. It's a good indication to get rid that pice a junk. That's what probably the owner thoughts.
But that doesn't apply to you or a car guy because we can fix it😂
Oh yeah, and tall guy.
Yea that trunk was dangerous lol 😂
Easy enough fix at least
You had me.
Is that a good thing?
Another solid video, Shawn. Just straight to the point with everything! We specifically produce LEDs for auto. Can we invite you to do a review for our product? We have emailed for an inquiry.
Thanks I'll check it out!
Love that. Inspiration
That's awesome! Go finish those project cars! Get em on the road they want some love :)
Ugh that interior was nasty! I admire your willingness to clean it sans gloves. lol
Appreciate it! The interior was definitely disgusting lol
Great video!
Coming from the bimmer doctor himself! thanks :)
Very nice video, had to sub
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you here!
What compound did you use to clean the dashboard? Looks great!
I used Maguires products for the interior! Meguiar's Ultimate Protectant
Nice BMW . Bro
Thanks dawg 😎
Look on the bright side. Oil leaks stops rust 😂…Kool content, hard work indeed but pls remove the back ground music in some areas especially at the beginning.. was quite loud… kinda annoying!!
Completely agree on the music! I've started making it much quieter and a calmer style of music too! Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it :)
Did you x ray that head for cracks?
Did you pressurize it to check for intake/exhaust valve leaks?
You have too many loose ends and you moving too fast towards engine assembly.
Engine prep work was absolutely insufficient
I'm not building a 1000hp engine here lol. I bought a stock head with 60,000 miles it runs and drives great. no need to go that far when your building a daily driver on a vehicle that's barely worth 12k... But more power to you if you go that far!
great stuff!
Thanks for watching!
How long did the whole process of installing the downpipe take?
Not to long I'd say an hour start to finish. That being said I already had the exhaust off previously which took an hour the first time because it was so stuck together. And I already had the undertrays off from pulling the engine. So I would say it could take 2 to 3 hours depending on how stuck your exhaust is.
Sounds like you are becoming an f10 535i shop😂
P.S. or is this a long video with that f10 535i you originally bought?
This is the same one lol just all the episodes out into one. Sorry to get your hopes up XD
@@ShawnzeyRacing lol, yeah, I figured it was an OG f10 after scrolling for a bit) but please do get more BMWs, perhaps another 5 series like g chassis 540i
I did have a subscriber offer a bmw e70 diesel for pretty cheap but I'm trying to show people that I don't only work on BMWs lol 😂
I do like them though so there will be more BMWs in the future
@@ShawnzeyRacing please take it) gotta keep your focus, it will be much easier to stick to one brand, and get its fans follow your channel
This is a great example of what happens when you abuse a car. What would routine servicing have cost to avoid this?! Ended up costing the previous owner a lot more!!!
Yea it did! There was a for sale sign in the trunk listing it for 12,500. Assuming he bought it for that much he lost a good chunk of change not changing the oil lol
I always look after my stuff for this exact reason. What a silly waste of money. I will say the fact the car turned out so well is testament to the build quality and materials used to endure that much abuse. That kind of owner are the type to brag about how little they spent on maintenance in the time they owned it 😂
Did I miss you going over the total cost?
I did that in a separate short video :)
ruclips.net/video/dNN4Q-LCEJA/видео.html
What did you use to clean the headliner? Just soap and water? I want to clean a few small spots on my 2013 F10.
I used chemical guys carpet cleaner but heavily diluted in water and just dipped the brush in the soapy water and brushed it in. Worked fairly well!
Bonjour, j'ai la même avec un intérieur zimt-brau avec 285 000 km au compteur, toujours intéressant de voir comment son moteur est construit, le coffre ne s'ouvre pas électriquement ?
The latch is electronic but the hinges are just a shock and spring. thanks for watching! :)
good stuff
thank you kindly 🤠
Did Freon spray out when you off the condenser?
If it was filled it would've. You would need to take it to an ac shop for them to vacuum it out before taking the condenser off
Whatd you use to clean it? I'm looking for a kit to buy when cleaning my car.
Most of the products I used were Maguires brand. Except the compounds were Chemical Guys
Man. How does one even get in such a filthy car. If that’s the state of the vehicle inside you know the person didn’t follow basic service for it.
Yea towards the end of the video I check the engine service reminder and it said 40,000 miles overdue lol 😂.
It's possible they just never reset it but I'd believe it if it were true!
@@ShawnzeyRacing Holy shit man, was going through the video so hadn't reached that part. Explains a lot. BMW engines are generally pretty robust...
shit musik its killling the vibe
There is no music in the world that everyone will like. :( But I do agree future videos will have a more relaxed background music :)
💪😎👍
🫡
You know what they say if your BMW aint lea😅king oil it has no oil LOL. A starter motor job is like 3K on this 😅
It's not a BMW if there isn't a puddle of oil under it all the time for sure!
Are those things really that damn slow stock? My Taurus is significantly quicker. Damn 😅
Its a hefty car mostly for luxury lol, so yes pretty slow! But an amazing daily it's the perfect amount of comfort and sport for me at least. I always want to go faster though...
Seems its not your first engine to rebuild.😀
Only built a couple but I've watched a lot of it on RUclips :)
Why didn't you change timing chain and tensioners?
I did :)
@@ShawnzeyRacing yea, i saw it later. Did you change diff oil seal? :) I am in the middle of the video))
I did not change any seals on the diff just the fluid. Not a bad idea to do of course though!
How do you know if the oil pump is working or not?
Well now that it's all back together I can see that it has oil pressure with a scan tool. But you can test an oil pump out of a car with a drill if you need to :)
👏👏👏👏👏
Sub"d!👍👍👍

Isn't this engine scrap?
The bottom end was fantastic so I just bought a used head with 60k miles :)
Good to go!
I have a 3600 and was thinking about the 5700x3d cause it’s just $190 atm.. but I’m not seeing and real detectable difference.. if you didn’t have any data points on the screens you wouldn’t tell which is which and I’m an old man so I don’t drink koolaid like the kids … your not cool because you spent $3k on a gaming PC that plays games like an all used parts PC That you spent $1k on.
Are you commenting on the right video? xD
I don't remember mentioning my PC specs lol
1:50:16 anybody know what that is? i felt something like its correcting the spring's tension underneath that cap but idk.
Im fairly certain it's for the adjustable cams. Since it doesn't have oil pressure the spring is clicking. The noise went away when I got it running in the BMW so good to go :)
@@ShawnzeyRacing gotcha. i liked your hardwork and the improvement performance of car. i want to buy one of these but they are way too expensive in my country. same car costs 64k$
It's a fantastic car so I completely understanding you wanting one! Sucks that they are so expensive where you live though that sucks :(
5k for a car with a blown engine LOL what were they thinking, this is why I hate marketplace
Yea a bit much specially since it wasn't in mint condition lol. But they accepted 1k and that's a price I'll take 😎
In Finland it would be easy to sell this car with broken engine for 5k. So 1000$ is a real bargain.
I agree $1,000 is awesome!
No gloves is diabolical
It was quite a disgusting car... Interior and engine bay.
