Perfect DIY video, this will guide many N55 owners. I have 2 of these in an X3 and a 5535xi just like yours. These cars are great but most owners dont want to maintain them and toss them out around 100K miles. Good job!!!
Awesome rebuild. Please please please check your rear door card vapor seals. I did something very similar to you with a 2011 528i and one day it rained and the rear carpet was absolutely flooded. Basically the rear vapor seals have that gummy urethane seal that comes off and water gets in. Absolute nightmare but its super easy to address before it happens!

As some one who got a 3 series pulled out the 1.8 liter then rebuilt the n54 engine then fitted it back wired it and converted it form manual to auto I know the excitement and struggle ❤
i also bought a 2011 535xi for dirt cheap.. $1400 canadian. (about 1k usd) i dont think the damage to the engine will be the same . as mine died while idling with the ac on.. had to be low on oil beforehand & the previous owner didnt know/didnt care. the only difference is i got the M sport spec.. ive got an idea for the body (bodykit) i may try to repair the engine, but i definitely want to see what the damage looks like. i definietely need to change out my interior (cream) to something i actually like (black). this video series is like watching my journey before it starts.. great job btw
@@ShawnzeyRacing trying to get the trunk open right now & nothing is working.. can't even put it in neutral to move it. Today isn't good. Can't even remove the back seats because I need in the trunk to get the remaining bolts.. pass through is blocked too
oh man the trunk situation is rough I know all about it! I had to take my back seats out completely to give me room to get back there! And to get mine in neutral what I did was push to start and let the engine crank over and then hold the shifter forward I believe for 5 seconds. Would have to google to make sure that's right for yours too but I think that's right.

The clicking noise on the cam gears/ vanos are supposed to be there. I’ve done multiple m62 guides, and they all click when turning the engine over. I believe there is tension in the vanos

at 1:19:51 you torque the last bolt of the oil pomp at 180° ...the oters bolts you torqued at 90° i hope its not a problem for your engein super video ✌👌
Any shake was probably my cheap Amazon GoPro mount XD I don't notice anything while driving but I'll pay extra attention next time I drive see if I notice anything :)
I did in fact take piston 3 and 4 out and inspect them but none of the other ones. And we had such a wide range of compression just because the intake camshaft was seized and some of the valves were in the open position. But I do agree I should've checked all the pistons rather then just a couple. But it's running great now :)
Bought an equinox. Needs head gaskets runs ok. Paid. 600. Sold wheels for 400. And wrong battery for 100. Put on my $66 wheels. And got 50 battery. Into it for $216. Might do heads

I'm at 2:14:27 and you just got the engine back into the car. You had some text on the screen that said "What could I possible miss?" lol and I'm gonna guess you forgot the engine ground.
I did forget 1 ground that connects to the transmission lol Bigger than that though I forgot a bolt holding on the transmission cooler lines and had to get towed back to the shop because all my transmission fluid was no longer in the car lol mistakes happen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I totally get it-every time I do a job, like replacing the valve cover gasket on my 2015 F10, I’m constantly second-guessing if I got everything back together right. I've been working on cars since I was a kid, but every little noise still makes me think I messed something up, even when it's nothing. I can only imagine the stress of driving a car after going that deep into a repair. But honestly, even with that mistake, it sounds like you did a great job overall. Like you said, mistakes happen, especially with a big job like that. And hey, you often learn more from mistakes than when everything goes perfectly!
An excellent idea! So far we haven't had any low oil pressure lights or check engine lights so I think the pump is good to go but it was a gamble! If the oil pump was bad it would've sucked to replace in the car lol.
ohhh..that engine did not see a lot of oil changes.. Also, my feelings are hurt that you didn't pull out the gas pedal out to clean up behind it because it is awfull back there :D:D
Not to long I'd say an hour start to finish. That being said I already had the exhaust off previously which took an hour the first time because it was so stuck together. And I already had the undertrays off from pulling the engine. So I would say it could take 2 to 3 hours depending on how stuck your exhaust is.
Did you x ray that head for cracks? Did you pressurize it to check for intake/exhaust valve leaks? You have too many loose ends and you moving too fast towards engine assembly. Engine prep work was absolutely insufficient
I'm not building a 1000hp engine here lol. I bought a stock head with 60,000 miles it runs and drives great. no need to go that far when your building a daily driver on a vehicle that's barely worth 12k... But more power to you if you go that far!

Well now that it's all back together I can see that it has oil pressure with a scan tool. But you can test an oil pump out of a car with a drill if you need to :)

The oil starvation may have come from your cam shaft look at the end where the oil goes into at the end of the cam that will happen
Very well could have been I'm not 100% sure on the path the oil takes for engine. Unfortunately don't have the camshaft anymore either :(

Don't forget to check the piston's to see if the rings are ok remember you didn't have compression on two cylinders

What did you use to clean the headliner? Just soap and water? I want to clean a few small spots on my 2013 F10.
I used chemical guys carpet cleaner but heavily diluted in water and just dipped the brush in the soapy water and brushed it in. Worked fairly well!

An excellent idea! So far we haven't had any low oil pressure lights or check engine lights so I think the pump is good to go but it was a gamble! If the oil pump was bad it would've sucked to replace in the car lol.

Pretty sure the small radiator was the heat exchanger
The small radiator hoses connect to the big radiator so I think it's just additional cooling but could be wrong

How long did the whole process of installing the downpipe take?
Not to long I'd say an hour start to finish. That being said I already had the exhaust off previously which took an hour the first time because it was so stuck together. And I already had the undertrays off from pulling the engine. So I would say it could take 2 to 3 hours depending on how stuck your exhaust is.
Did you x ray that head for cracks?
Did you pressurize it to check for intake/exhaust valve leaks?
You have too many loose ends and you moving too fast towards engine assembly.
Engine prep work was absolutely insufficient
I'm not building a 1000hp engine here lol. I bought a stock head with 60,000 miles it runs and drives great. no need to go that far when your building a daily driver on a vehicle that's barely worth 12k... But more power to you if you go that far!

I didn't track my time very well but I would guess around 120 hours

Put some liquid Molly in the engine and fuel take it works very good on these cars.
I don't think I've ever used liqui molly but I have tried sea foam!

I did not change any seals on the diff just the fluid. Not a bad idea to do of course though!

How do you know if the oil pump is working or not?
Well now that it's all back together I can see that it has oil pressure with a scan tool. But you can test an oil pump out of a car with a drill if you need to :)
