    I've watched a lot these 'VS' videos. The people doing the comparisons always fail to mention that pedal assisted bikes accelerate less predictably than throttle ones. They will suddenly propel you forward with a short burst of speed when you pedal at specific speeds that you can't always gauge.
    The unpredictability of the pedal assistance can be dangerous when cycling around traffic and when you need to speed up and slow down to get around obstacles because you can suddenly propel forward into obstacles you are slowly trying to maneuver around.
    In my opinion, it's better to turn the pedal assist off completey when on the road and going around obstacles.

    • @saltydog888
      @saltydog888 Месяц назад

      Absolutely totally wrong. Throttles are more likely to propel you unexpectedly if you’re not on the job. Pedal assist is totally controllable. I’ve got both and I know.

    • @Why-I-Oughta
      @Why-I-Oughta Месяц назад

      @@saltydog888 I've had all types of e-bikes too.
      If the throttle on your e-bike accelerates you less predictably than a pedal-assisted bike that gives you a delayed boost of speed, that is an issue with your throttle.
      A good throttle gives you the ability to control your acceleration more precisely than a sensor activated by pedalling.
      Although, I will say e-bikes with a good torque sensor tend to have very little delay and be very predictable; much more predictable than the average e-bike with a cadence sensor.

    • @saltydog888

      @@Why-I-Oughta Proprietary mid drive pedal assist don’t have any surge what so ever. Hub drives do.

    • @Why-I-Oughta
      @Why-I-Oughta Месяц назад

      @saltydog888 It is not just about surge. The amount of control you have when using a reliable throttle is more than you'll get by relying on pedalling to engage the motor, especially when going from stationary to moving.

      The logical thing is to just have throttle activated pedal assist if there are some pesky "laws" to get round.

    I have a front hub motor with pas and a twist throttle. The twist throttle is great, easy to use and you have very good and smooth control over the speed. Can still pedal along with twist throttle or just blip it occasionally to speed up. Pas is not the best, especially in traffic. Its a bit imprecise, but its good for wide open trails with nobody around. Not good when you have to worry about cars.

    Since the rise of E-Bikes I learned 1 thing. Lowest assist if u aint done riding and highest when u go home. That way the battery doesnt deplete while u riding. But its not advised to deplete the battery. Normally u want it always above 20-40 % or else buy more capacity. If u come at high hills u can increase the assist but it drains more power. Throttle are crap they drain way too much energy with assist u can go further without leg exercise of traditional bike. The radius of my rental is around 180km then it stops and becomes a brick because some einstein thought it was smart to slow a bike instead give better brakes. I love this technology its sci fy.

    If you have a “pedal assist” only bike, buy a cheap “5V pulse generator” (NE555 timer) and a momentary push button. Set the pulse generator output to around 25HZ (max for mine was 45). Remove the crank sensor (cut the wires, there are 3) install the push button on the 5V line (red) and wire the output of the pulse generator to the ‘signal return’ (blue) wire. Push the button to turn on the pulse generator, and it will send the pulse to the controller and the back wheel will turn. Let go of button and it stops. Pedal assist only to throttle controlled ebike. Get fancy and instead of push button, wire use potentiometer control that twists like a throttle, with a 3D printed mount.

    QUESTION THAT NO VIDEO ON RUclips ANSWERS! Can the range of intermittent use of throttle be better than pedal assist? (AKA only using the Throttle for hills and otherwise pedaling unassisted)Also pedaling at the same time as using the throttle (Like a normal person) This is how a lot of people ride and is a big reason a lot of people prefer throttle and swear by its range capabilities.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  4 года назад +1

      Hi Luke! That makes sense... I actually sometimes do this, just like you’re saying. By using the throttle gently and selectively, I do think it helps to extend range. Many affordable ebikes use cadence sensors, which aren’t as smart as a human using a variable speed throttle. There are other advanced pedal assist sensors (like a Bosch makes) and they are probably on par with a human, but more of an “always on” vs selective use. Good ideas you’ve shared here :)

    My car broke down and my current job is pretty close by. I’ve had 3 or 4 cars break down on my and I just turned 30. The roads in Michigan are so bad I feel I need to just say screw the cars, let do bikes. I’ve been biking to work and it’s just miserable on hot days or windy days. Also there are 3 hills I have to climb and very busy intersections at the bottom where I can’t use my momentum very often to push on through. Looking into this pedal assist. Looking like I probably won’t be able to afford that either. I want to leave my town so I can find work where I’ll actually be paid fairly but I just can’t get a break, vehicles keep stealing all my savings and I have to start over every time. Very upsetting to hear the middle class say I’m not trying hard enough. With biking to work and working in a 90 degree kitchen by myself 5 days a week serving hundreds I don’t think I’m “too lazy”. We got a transportation problem in this country, specifically MI that siphons all my time and money away from me and leaves me no room for self improvement. Doesn’t help that the landlords here are all slum lords and still expect standard rent rates. Don’t ever move to MI unless you want to be hopelessly stuck like I am.

    My bewo I added has a pedal hall sensor that starts/stops the motor if you pedal...not the same.
    It has a thumb trottle -- legal in UK as bike bought before law changed. Throttle is very useful.. as is the tip for slightly pulling either brake to cut the motor before changing gears, I have wire disks and the brake sensors are sensitive more than the brakes.
    You don't mention direct drive motors have so much drag...can be used for regen braking, but the magnets mean you can't really pedal without power.
    The planetary geared ones have a clutch, so the motor is disengaged..a bit.

    It was predictable when it came to US it would turn into recreational purpose(for people just want to go faster, in other words, they are looking for toys.) because market for utility bicycle segment is non existent in US.

    Good video. Companion video of ebikes that have both pedal assist AND throttle??

  • @DrLeePercussion
    @DrLeePercussion 3 года назад

    Nice Video. I just got a ElectricSa international ebike. Type 2. I am new to ebikes so this question may be because I have 0 knowledge of ebikes. Question: When i ride my ebike sometimes the power completely shuts off ? I have to open the battery casing /shassi (it folds open/close) and then reclose it to get the power back on using the power button. Is this normal to have to keep opening the battery casing folding part to power it on again? seems odd to me if it is.... thanks!.

    Clearly biased, if you're worried that on bumpy terrain you'd accidentally activate the throttle, then I'd say theres a larger chance of a accident with a bike with pedal assist, for tecnical riding you'd often shift your feet half a turn or so and if you because of that get a sudden power surge it might very well cause a problem.
    Aswell as while lifting and handeling the bike its more likely that something accidentally catches on the pedals than the tiny thumb trigger.
    Also, the grip trottle might be a problem on rough terrain, well, why do motocross bikes use them?

    • @Torchedini
      @Torchedini 7 лет назад

      Well the throttle is a problem. I have accidentally hit a throttle and made the motor go off with the bike. Not fun, just turn of the bike whenever you put it in storage or are going to lift it.
      Also, when tinkering on the bike, remove power sources. It is as simple as that.
      Just like you don't go mess under the hood of a car when it is running.
      The stromer system is really good. But you have to remember that the stromer is very expensive. Most cheaper bikes only do rotation measurement, so they measure if the pedals are going round and activate after 2 or 3 rotations. The next step is either this system where you don't mess with the bottom bracket or like the bosch drives where you're replacing the bottom bracket anyway so adding a torque sensor there isn't that complicated. But these systems are expensive because they are more complicated.

      I've never had a problem with my twist throttle on my ebike. Also if the breaks are activated the motor is turned off so if I am so paranoid I could just keep the breaks held when waiting at a light then no amount of twisting the throttle will start the motor. It is also common sense to turn off the bike before you get off it. I also noticed that when he showed a bike with throttle he showed the smallest, weakest little bike he could. I got a bias vibe from this the entire time. I can just press a button and change my bike to pedal assist anyway not sure why they have to be separate.

      @4nlimited3dition_4n3d 6 лет назад

      This was the only convincing I needed: Stopped at a red light(Forgot to set pedal assist to 0 on this occasion and it doesn't automatically go to 0, unlike a throttle), I move my pedals a little, bike gives a big boost forward almost throwing me onto the road and killing me. These days I use throttle only 90% of the time. There's a reason motorbikes have their throttles on the handlebars and not the pedals. That random boost from the assist has also happened many times before as well.

    With a motor that has a max speed of 15 mph what happens if the person medals faster than the motor/outperforms the motor?

    • @NyuuMikuru1
      @NyuuMikuru1 5 лет назад

      The motors has a limiter since most laws on books in some countries saying any bike faster than 20 mph/30 kph is considered a motercycle. I have mine but is limited at 19 mph.

    Should you charge your battery after every use or is it better to drain it all the way down ?

    • @ShermanSitter
      @ShermanSitter 5 лет назад

      with lithium it doesn't matter as much no matter what you do. with other types "they" say you should let it drain to avoid memory, but i recently researched that and i'm not sure it applies anymore with modern batteries.

    • @NyuuMikuru1
      @NyuuMikuru1 5 лет назад

      Just be careful in charging and the charger do get hot. Owner of ebike, max limit is 24 miles per charge.

      Hi Dan! I've reviewed hundreds of other models at ElectricBikeReview.com with videos and stuff, you can see a review of the Bafang mid-drive BBS02 which is what the Super 73 appears to have. I plan on reviewing it thoroughly later this year. Anyway, sometimes you can indeed get a throttle adapter or accessory when you know what the drive system is. Try reaching out to E-Rad which is a part of Lectric Cycles, maybe they can help you www.lectriccycles.com/

    • @iamachine
      @iamachine 4 года назад

      Some could be considered “low speed electric bikes” as defined by U.S. Public Law, while others are more closely related to mopeds or motorcycles based on their power and speed. For this reason, several “classes” were created in Europe defining how and where specific ebikes could be used. Variations of these classes are now becoming relevant in America and other locales as laws are put in place determining whether and where an ebike can be used on the road, bike paths and mountain biking trails. -from the EBR website.

  • @user-hg3wd1tg6s

    I think 'pedal assist' are the only electric bikes that should exist! People who want a 'full throttle' bike should get a motorcycle instead. Throttle bikes should be outright banned here in the US, and anyone riding one should have it confiscated by the authorities and face charges.

    what is the best bike that I don't really have to pedal, going 5mph or faster (by power without pedalling), have total distance at about 8 miles per charge, and cost around $600 or less. I saw one like Ancheer for about the price but I know nothing else about it. I do know that it does have a throttle mode that I don't have to pedal but I don't know if it really is and how fast how many miles and more details about it. my use will be mainly be bringing my baby to park with baby seat, going to a bank or buy something close by or errands in my neighborhood which most of them have less than 3-5 miles back and forth total, and my area do have some hills but if bike like these couldn't climb that I could probably go a little long way to avoid it if needed. do you have one in mind that you can recommend that meets my need? thanks in advance and good day sir.

    • @guysbot
      @guysbot 7 лет назад

      Ancheer should be perfect for you , depends how much you weigh including load you carry . If you search youtube on ancheer - Vegas RoManiac has a good review on it as well demonstration to put it together which convinced me to buy one . I've only had the ancheer about a week now and love it . I get about 20 miles per charge , goes about 15 - 20( downhill ) mph . The one i purchased is the mountain bike style was about 550 delivered off ebay . It has pedal assist ( 3 levels ) and throttle mode . Some hills with the low power of 250w motor better off in pedal assist and it makes it very easy .

      most, if not all of them are sealed. Manufactured bikes can Handle quite alot of Rain., on the other hand you would not treat a 600$ Kit bike Like it was a $99 Walmart special and leave on the side of your house for 2 years.
