They say hind sight is 20/20 and boy is that true! We are going to be fighting to install an under deck roofing system on the deck we just built. Part of being novice home/deck builders is learning as you go and sometimes tackling things out of order. We knew we wanted the under side of the deck to stay dry for storage of items such a 4-wheelers, dirt bikes etc. but we didn't know there was such a thing as an under deck roofing system. Had we know, the proper thing to do would be to have installed this before putting the floor joists down but here we are.... doing it after the fact. Today we put our plan into action installing and testing this DIY under deck roof. Bring on the rain!

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"
I was born and raised in WV watching you guy's about a year. You guy's make me smile from start to finish with your videos. Makes me proud that you're doing this in our state ❤
West Virginia is a beautiful state for sure.
just driving through on my way to my families in Northern PA from NC I really enjoy the mountain views and the highest arched Bridge in america is amazing its a beautiful trip no matter what time of yr I go but the fall leaves are just so amazing to see.

Man, I am IMPRESSED with the way Erin was flinging those 80lb bags cement around like they were loaves of bread!!! WOW!!! Nice guns!!!!
Erin can carry me with no problem
DAMN! You're right! The lady's got some real muscle in those well toned arms. Strong back too. At 65 soon to be 66, I would have a serious problem lifting (and carrying any distance) an 80# bag quick-crete
@@brockshields9336 80# bag is no joke. Was impressive.
The family that works together will be together forever. Bravo
I've never seen a woman in my lifetime as strong as Erin doing construction chores. She can hold her own physically with Josh! Plus she's had 3 kids, she beautiful and a body to die for....A true Wonder Woman!
Amen 🙏 ❤👌
It's not that hard to do if you are conditioned. It just requires good sleep, a responsible diet, and a good work ethic.
Remind me never to arm wrestle Erin
I did. It was in the 80's and that woman was like this one: strong in muscles and mind and beautiful.
same thing i was thinking dam
My favorite part of that video was sweet little Ellie walking through the background huggin' on a chicken. Best life ever~!!!
She has veterinarian written all over her! Truly an animal whisperer
She is so adorable with those animals.
It's the best way to wake up in the morning to see your beautiful family working together on your home, I love the bond you guys have and the morals and values your teaching your kids, much love from Australia 🇦🇺
The difference between your channel and other couples channels that are building a home is that you guys actually get stuff done.
@ M Gower. I totally agree AND there is no drama to speak of when they get a splinter etc. So refreshing.
Getting stuff done and having fun while doing it. I love Ellie’s war face right at the end throwing her water balloons! What a wonderful family!❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@fw1421 She has older brothers.. She's going to need that war face :-)
@@mrrewog brothers will always defend and protect their sister…always
But, for the in-house games a war face will come in handy 👩🏾🦰
Huh? What channels don't get stuff done?
You know you're all in when you watch someone else complete a task and you feel fulfilled. That's what these amazing people do for me.
I get so excited when you guys put out a video feels like I know you I've been watching you guys for so long ❤️
My friend had that done underneath his deck for his basement patio area. He even had a ceiling fan installed. Makes use of another dry space. Thanks for sharing.
You all never fail to make me smile! Engineering doesn't always mean blueprints and complication. Solving a problem with materials you have on hand creatively is a good definition of engineering! Keep on keeping on!
FIELD Expedient fixes with materials on hand is also called Yankee engineering
You two remind me of my wife and I , we built four homes in 22 years and survived !! Once the house was done and we moved in we needed a 3 month brake .....The gutter idea was brilliant .
Wow! Tell me more please :3
Something about this kinda life just makes me happy I hope when I grow up I can lead a similar life
Do your schoolwork and get qualifications. Then you’ll be able to choose to do whatever you want.
@@philtucker1224 That's the plan!
Marry an electrician :)
@@DirkieB I'm afraid I'm a little too young for that but maybe in the future XD
This should be many kids college now days.much better life skills will be learned doing what Josh & Erin are doing.
I pray our young people here in america will head down the path there teaching on there channel
Aww….was the little one crying at the end there? I hope not. I love the way the boys helped and then they planned the water fight…MInt! The underdeck roof is. Great idea! Well done, guys!
Now that was a very enjoyable ending. Even Chucky got involved.
Some dads would have gotten mad at the kids for getting him wet while he was trying to work but Daddy Josh was all for a game with the kids!!! You guys are so great with those kids making them all feel important on helping to build house/deck!!!!
Watching these two put in the work has shamed me into finishing up some repairs I have been putting off. Much respect for your persistence!
That waterballoon fight made me happier than I have been in a long time. I hope God continues to bless your beautiful family for decades to come.
Erin - Be SUPER CAREFUL not to get your braid caught in the moving parts of the mixer !!!!!!!!!!!!! Looked to me like it was getting super close. First rule about using machines like that is no hair or clothes that could get caught.
I was holding my breath. It was so close.
I was going to say that.
Came here to write the same thing. Best Family on RUclips and we would hate to see any of y’all get hurt.
I sure hope they see this note.
PPE......GREAT FAMILY AND VID BUT WEAR YOUR GLOVES, EYE GLASSES, YOUR FREAKING ME OUT!!!!
Much respect to you brother Joshua for having the courage to leave the Amish community under excommunication to pursue love and your dreams!
Watching Erin picking up and moving 80 lb sacks of concrete makes me realize how out of shape I am! Y’all are doing a great job! God bless you and your children!!
That shot of Erin pouring the cement was PRICELESS!!!!! 🥰🥰with all the respect in the world!!!
A West Virginia girl here. Love the Mountain state.
If you put out a T-Shirt with Josh's phrase "Is That Make Sense?" I would totally buy it!
No better justification for MyMedic kit than Josh bull riding the top of the A-frame!
LMAO....
you 2 are obviously hard workers , and you have what looks like 2 beautiful , healthy children . Wish you the best with your future projects , and thanks for sharing this project !!!
Man! Josh didn’t hold back the intensity of the balloon throws at all and the kids were still smiling 😆
That look on Haley's face when she was holding the two balloons getting ready to go John Wick on Josh...Priceless.

Hey Josh those wheels on the mixer are just "Anti-theft" compliant.

Anyone dumb enough to come all the way up in there to steel that deserves it with flat tires LOL. Can't imagine anyone doing that but we are living in different times now days.

I really enjoy watching the builds and how you two work it all out, but the family time brings so much joy. Priceless.
So good to see the kids helping.Even litle Ellie will be a DIY lady one day.
Children they are not babies goats. They are children.
@@maggievedrenne7379 What?
@@ninjanana8730 , My mother-in-law used to like to do that to me too. (Say that) The term for a baby goat is "kid" or "kids" (multiple baby goats) , But this family IS one of the G.O.A.T. families! (Greatest Of All Time)
@@Jedidaddyo Your responce to my responce to Maggie is about goats? Since when did the word Kid become about goats? We are not talking about Simone Biles which is where I keep seeing that. Of cource Leonard would be happy to help out if he had fingers instead of hoofs LOL
@@ninjanana8730 OK, I guess you were talking about something else with the "kid" term. I really dislike it used as "college kids", by that time they're 18yo and therefore adults, but that's a whole other discussion. I'm sure Leon would be right in there if he had fingers too. Starting with camera placement and shooting angles. He's gotta be the creative of the bunch of animals there. Though he'd probably take issue with Chucks management and direction. LOL

I’ve been in Australia for the last 2 1/2 years and been following for the last year or so. Worked on so many of these projects over the years and it’s so wonderful watching your family work through yours, from ideas to completion, dealing with logistics and weather. Top notch channel and videos. Congratulations and well done.
Aluminum against PT is not good sorry guys A plus for effort
Its really nice how Erin lets the kids use her trampoline.
Nothing better than an old electric cement mixer. I remember my dad and I putting up forms for walkways, pilings for decks around our pool, and rebuilding a rock foundation on our old house. My brother still uses it today and it was bought new in the 70's. Definitely got our money worth out of it.
Loving how its all coming together, you can tell theirs love hard work and dedication going into every idea you guys make come true!! Blessings.
You guys are American number one favorite family🙏.
Very rare nowadays to see a family like yours with strong family values and true joy and happiness.
May God bless you guys with a much brighter future horizons.👍
I was a bit curious as to what or even, IF, you guys were gonna do something underneath. You both are doing so well.
They said long ago it was gonna be parking for the boys' toys and storage.
Your house is awesome! I’m still in awe with your progress and seeing what is possible when you set your goals and work towards them. Please never stop adding new projects and content to your channel!
I loved watching this episode. It always warms my heart to see y’all do things with your children and how most times it seems spontaneous. Your channel has been a welcome distraction from the crazy in the world right now. Thank you for sharing your lives with us. 💖
I really love that no matter how busy you are .. you both always have time to spend and play with your children .... love your story ...
I am so glad you mentioned the My Medic product. Ever since I started watching a few years back, I have been concerned about medical emergencies and how close you are to medical care should you have an accident. It's good to know you have prepared with the tools to handle an emergency. I hope you have also had the training.
I know I speak for your viewer when I say we don't want any misfortune to come your way.
So glad to see that by building an 'under deck roof' you will also be sealing the 'sistered' 2x10s from rain ( and eventually ) rot. Even with pressure treated lumber. Your kids will not even know to thank you about twenty years for not having to replace those 'sistered' beams. Looking great, The Crazy Canuck from Victoria B.C.
The water balloon ambush was terrific . . . one of the best pieces of "the build!"
Beside work there is time for a lot of fun. Love to see you work and laugh together ☺️
Seeing your children play with Josh made me laugh, you have a wonderful family.
That ending, so awesome. I found myself smiling and laughing with you guys. “The summer of yes” in full effect. I love watching you guys.
I have not heard the word "honker" since the 1970's when I was a kid..... was LOL'ing when you said that!!!!! That was really creative how you did the channel under the brackets and maintained water integrity. Great seeing you guys complete your dream- the pool (in-ground) or hot tub is a must for a deck that size.
The best family in the world. A wonderful family with deep love and ties. Very great. my husband is the best wife is the best So the kids, the house and the farm are great. I have been supporting you from Japan for a long time.
Don’t forget the permanent cross bracing under the deck. Right now your deck is built on stilts with no bracing. Look at docks that go out over water to see the cross bracing.
docks experience side loads.
I never would have thought of your method for keeping the area under the deck dry. You two are amazing. I loved the water balloon fight at the end of the video too. You always make time for a little family fun. Great job!
You might want to think about a little extra 2x4 reinforcement for the metal roofing though. While rainwater will freely run off without causing much loading, the same might not be true in the winter, when snow and ice might cause significant loading. Remember, that roofing won't have the benefit of the sun, so you might get quite a bit of build-up through the winter.
Love your family's spirit! All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
I've run out of ways to express how this show makes me feel all I can say is love love love family fun work hard relax and enjoy your handiwork
Great way to make more dry space! Well done
Perfect spot for the kids to park their 4wheelers/dirt bikes 😊
It’s a small world in RUclips land!!
Also, they can collect that rain and store it for dry days to water the plants
We have done similar things in the past with decks. Just don’t cut yourself short on the 2 x 4s! Snow melts from the sun then freezes on the metal in the shade. Gets really heavy!
@@robbridges7810 i think he need to put some steel wire ( upper the plate ) to get the snow out from the plate by moving the steel wire 🤔 or he will need to support that weight
I did the same thing under my 30 years ago…always glad I did! We have a descent amount of snow up here in Wisconsin…so this is almost like a storage shed for lawnmowers a garden utensils
Congratulations for your work. From Brazil....
I love that you guys do things in your own DIY fashion rather than the way it's "supposed to be done". It's awesome to see your minds work as well as everything else and see it all come together!
Josh u really had fun with the water balloons. The children enjoying it.
I’ve seen others trying to do this, yours was the best I’ve ever seen. Now you have a lot of dry storage for hard work and some money. Y’all have learned to find a way for diy and staying out of debt. Most people are scared to try cause they’re scared of failure, you’re not. The way you designed this, what made you think it would not work , it’s perfect. I put a roof under a deck years ago but not this nice. Stay safe
"Knock Knock?" "Who's there" "Orange" "Orange who" "Orange you glad you screwed the deck instead of nailing?" he he. Love the channel. Cheers!
Pneumatic nailer... much faster and easier than screwing...
@@rushd45 YES, BUT they would had to pull all those nails to put in their under deck water catchment systems. Thus glad they use screws vs. nails.
@@rushd45 So true. It would have been so much easier to dismantle the beams and joists for this installation if they had only nailed them! (And that was the point of the comment, by the way.) But of course, they also had to sacrifice quality and appearance to use those hidden screws on the deck boards too. They are probably kicking themselves since they don' get to see that gorgeous nail pattern along the top and have nothing to look forward too when the nails start coming loose and popping out. No fun there.
Erin is definitely stronger then me. :) What a contrast and speak about being an adult, children playing and have fun and adults working and struggling. Everyone having fun, including Chucky, in the end. Beautiful.
You two are wonderful ! I have just been through the exact same process of building a deck AND an under-deck roof to drain the rain the last couple of weeks and, although my deck is only 4x2m, I confirm that the under-deck roofing was a big struggle (I also used zinc plates) ! I hope you will be able to use that extra space, without it being flood !
Intuition , ingenuity , goes a long way . Great idea well though out , all the family helping out to get it done . The little ones having fun with water balloons priceless . . Keep up the excellent work and content . .
Watching you do your roof under the deck makes me wish I had done the same thing. Good job Josh you always seem to find the simplest solutions for tough problems.
I built a storage shed from ready-made fence panels, attached to four 4x4s, atop which I built a deck which my kids came to call the treehouse. And right under the deck, just like you guys did, I gave it an underside roof so the deck would drain, but the shed stayed dry. That was around '98. I'm glad to see someone else had the same bright idea.
A family that plays together stays together, love it, love it, love it.
NO, I didn’t have goofy smile on my face watching the kids get their dad with water balloons! YOU had a goofy smile on your face!!! 😜🤪😅😂🤣🥰🙏🏽✌🏽💖
I recommended this when you first started. Great idea
Great idea. You'll probably get some grit and dust in the rainwater off the deck, but great for lawn, flower beds, washing the car, even just keeping a barrel full in case of fire, plus it's great dry storage space.
This is beyond amazing What you guys are doing. The water baloon fight was hilarious. Keep going you all. Cheers.
Gotta hand it to you young lady wheeling around those 80# bags of dry concrete. At 74 years old I now opt for the 60# bags 👍😍😍
The camera work and editing is really good.
I'm binge-watching these as some positive and inspirational New Year's programming. Regularly, I feel like saying, "Josh, you don't know how lucky you are to have Erin." Then I think, "Well, Erin's just as lucky to have Josh." Then I realize it isn't luck at all. Water seeks its own level and like attracts like. What a great couple you two are. And what beautiful, wonderful children you have. New Year's blessings to you all. Have a wonderful 2022.

This under deck roofing is a great idea! We have a second story deck, on our bi-level home so I plan on discussing with my h. as an option for us, although the height of our deck may pose more difficulty.
It's always a joy to see the kids helping with the project. Learning these skills while young will encourage their own future DIY projects when they are adults.

You guys ROCK!!!
I was glad to see you put that flashing above the beam. I'm in the process of replacing my beam and most of the joists. They rotted after only 15 years. The beam was not covered and water got in between the 2x8's and rotted them. All of the joists that get the most rain rotted as well. I coated the tops with FlexSeal this time. I know there's a tape you can buy, but I already had the FlexSeal. I think it'll work fine.
