Building An UNDER DECK ROOFING SYSTEM: Part 2

  • Today we are finishing up our DIY under deck roofing system by installing the final metal in the bays and the gutters along the end. We saved thousands by DIYing this project versus paying for the brand name system.
    Shop Our Apparel: www.bunkerbran...
    We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
    Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"

      Ya never should park a bike with the kick stand on the down ward part of the slope. It can fall on ya and trap ya under the bike. Always lean it to the up hillside of the slope. Also gives ya the advantage of getting it off you .

    Have a wicking 'trough' raised flower bed at the front of the lower deck. It would make it look pretty and you can have a overflow you can trench out somewhere. It also reduces the amount of watering you would need to have pretty flowers. See Jeff Lawton wicking bed permaculture regreening the desert project in Jordan for details. Even hook it up to a tank you can use for exterior fire suppression systems in case of wildfire.

    • @blissfull3147
      @blissfull3147 3 года назад +5

      A water tank used in the case of fire would be an excellent use of the water they can collect, then they would always have an emergency water supply that could be hooked up to a generator and hose. I hope they see your comment.

    I created a similar version by laying 2x4 on top of the joists with a longitudinal diagonal cut to make a fall run off. Then over layed roofing felt and fix the upper diagonally cut on top to clamp. This also releveled the joists to lay the actual deck boards on. I also used plastic plastic roof felt edge protector to flow the rain water into the roof gutter as they were designed to do as standard. Has worked well for 15 years keeping the area dry underneath.

    This water could be stored with a pair of small ponds with a brook between them having plants helping to scrub it similar to how grey water would be treated. A yard fountain for the kids to play in or just have pet 🐟 fish. Either way animals would also benefit as I don't believe any worries from stain will get thru the gavel/sand filters before entering the stream.

    Concerned that winter temperatures during the cold months might lend themselves into a paradox. Let’s say the sun comes out in the winter and it’s just warm enough to begin melting the exposed snow on top the deck. The water drips through and because of the shade under the deck refreezes on contact with the metal roofing underneath.. Let’s say that this becomes a continuous event for several days. How much weight can that system support before something gives way?

      Good Question. They could go through and double the 2x4 wood bracing under the metal sheets. Also, I would station a snow blower on that deck. That deck will be a bear to shovel in a storm. I would definitely be watching the ice build-up. The job looks super though and any little problem like this can be easily fixed...

      Ah, I'm pretty sure they are going to be shoveling the deck off, considering it is the entrance. The very little snow that would fall between the boards from shoveling would melt with that little bit of sunshine you mentioned. I don't see where there is going to be a problem.

    • @zmanmd1641

      If sagging occurs adding a diagonal cross member between posts could support any ice that could builds up in the space between the deck and under roof. Also because it is metal and black on top it will absorb energy better than the deck so it will heat heat up during the day as well.

    Wonderful, you keep yourselves busy with doing what other people mostly can dream. You provide everything that every parents are wanted to their kids. Just they probably a little bit less is socialising with other kids in terms of playing with their friends. Communication wise probably they can utilises the technology to chat with cousins. Nice to see Elly on four wheeler, still remember she was attached to mother in early build. Good luck and stay happy.

    I built several raised gardens using pressure-treated lumber. I used black plastic to isolate the soil from the lumber. I'd have run the downspout into a french drain. Great videography, Erin, I love seeing the kitties & other wildlife, also love seeing the kids participating.
