- Today we are finishing up our DIY under deck roofing system by installing the final metal in the bays and the gutters along the end. We saved thousands by DIYing this project versus paying for the brand name system.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"
This just shows that you CAN do a whole project without using channel locks! Love the channel guys, I’ve learned a lot from your experiences.
Heck I forgot all about the channel locks. LOL even the safety glasses too.
Josh has really come around very well.
Yes I am watching you both from the beginning of your house foundation but I didn't comment. In between due to busy schedule I didn't watch lots of your videos, about 2 year I missed your videos. So now I am back to bay started watching from where I left. I love you both and your family and you all doing the best May God bless you all
Welcome back! ❤️
It's amazing what you guys have accomplished in just a few years. Can't wait to see the next phase of the house build. Absolutely love watching you guys achieve your dreams
That
Well said and true!
I agree I can watch this channel all day long
Your boys are alot of help. Thank goodnese
That look on Josh's face when the kids were pulling the 4-wheelers in for the first time. Proud papa! Priceless!
Ya never should park a bike with the kick stand on the down ward part of the slope. It can fall on ya and trap ya under the bike. Always lean it to the up hillside of the slope. Also gives ya the advantage of getting it off you .
At that point a perfect time for a water rain system to save water for the dry season on your yard plants with barrels
You’re doing such a great job… and you’re so nice and so much fun to watch I always have a huge smile on my face when I’m done watching your vlogs… Thank you so much for just being you😊
The little ones now have thier own parking garage , ellie driving her quad like a professional , :-D . Excellent work and content . . One big happy family ,
Families who work together stay together…… you and your family impress’ me to know end !! May God bless your wonderful beautiful loving family !! ❤️😇🙂
I enjoy seeing your kids off riding free. Your daughter riding too. I grew up with farm kids, many were allowed to hunt, drive vehicles, and were also needed to help around the farm. Great way to grow up.
That could be a good play den for the kids in the winter
To witness a couple work together with such sweet harmony, is a feast for the soul. May YOUR bond of LOVE and COMMITMENT...,LIVE FOREVER !!👌👍
What a perfect terrace with a intelligent underdeck water collection… stunning! I wait for all new builds that are coming up! 😀 love your channel, your humor and happiness and your children! I am jealous about everything 😀😀😀
Each completed step has to be another satisfying victory. Just gets better and better. Looks great!
You have built the most beautiful "Grand Entry" to your home, imaginable. Once you complete the railings, you have kept us all in suspense about, it will absolutely pop! I can't wait to see the ultimate completion of the bedrooms and other stuff you guys have planned to bring your home to completion.
This channel is addictive. I love everything about this project. You two are amazing. I can't wait for the next episode.
I just admire the work and dedication you both have to be able to keep working even when you are tired ❤️
Erin, your cinematography is just amazing. The shifts between mood-shots and work are brilliant!
Exactly! :)
This is a great way to start my day.
I look forward to these so much.
Good to see the boys helping. That's life lessons you can't do without later in life. It also gives them a feeling of belonging to the house. Invested sweat equity.
I think iv said this before but the memories you are making for your kids are priceless. My parents did the same thing when I was 9 over 25 years ago and iv just purchased that same house of my parents and moved in with my family and every single peice of this house has a ton of memories from my child hood. It really is an amazing thing you are doing
looks beautiful.
team work is such a beautiful thing.♥
catching rainwater elsewhere for animals and garden is a better idea than from the deck; toxic chemicals are an unsure thing.
So true, team work is essential
Good Almost Heaven Afternoon to y'all!!
Love the deck design...everything is looking fantastic!!
Great job Erin and Josh.
Hope everything is well with your family. I just wanted to say that your doing a fantastic job. You're an inspiration to thousands of people who love to watch your channel.
Love the channel guys. We can't wait for you to start the second part of the house. We get a kick out of the kids and pets. Joshs turkey and goat are just a part of the family. Keep the vidios coming.
Thank YOU ALL ! Such a beautiful family and your drive for excellence is not only inspiring but heart warming and a light for darkness . You helped me have some hope for a better future. Y'all make me cry happy !
You say you are newbies, but your cutting yourselves short. You are doing an amazing job, detailed and much more professional than most businesses who do this for a living, and that’s been from my expectations and experiences. Spot on and well done.
Just wanted to say I have been watching y''all for about 3 years and I enjoy watching y'all raising your family. What I enjoy the most
about y'all is you enjoy the day. Meaning fun days ! Y'all do not take yourselves too seriously !!! I wish you all the best !!! Timothy.
That roofing system, like everything you two build, is a thing of beauty.
You can call your self newbies but you posses common sense and the ability to figure things out .... I am always impressed
Have a wicking 'trough' raised flower bed at the front of the lower deck. It would make it look pretty and you can have a overflow you can trench out somewhere. It also reduces the amount of watering you would need to have pretty flowers. See Jeff Lawton wicking bed permaculture regreening the desert project in Jordan for details. Even hook it up to a tank you can use for exterior fire suppression systems in case of wildfire.
A water tank used in the case of fire would be an excellent use of the water they can collect, then they would always have an emergency water supply that could be hooked up to a generator and hose. I hope they see your comment.
Watching your videos is better than anything on the networks. Reality tv in the truest sense of the word. We so enjoy watching the progress of your build and look forward to what’s next! Keep up the awesome work guys…you rock!
Loving the team work, updates, and the progress of your build. Keep up the good work and videos.
The kids have such a great role model in their Mom (& Dad, too)
I'm curious, why did you put 'dad' in parentheses? I find them both to be equally great role models, with each complimenting the other perfectly.
One more thing ticked off the list👍. What great storage space. Great job as usual👍❤️
The nice thing is that when I am in need of a WWOG fix and I have seen all of the very latest I can just go back a year, two or three and watch some of your older videos and totally enjoy it. Everything is good. I admit I am hooked on watching WWOG and there is always something I have not yet seen. It is much better than watching Netflix or ESPN. Very entertaining. We are so fortunate to have you guys share your interesting off grid life experiences with us.
I know that I've said this before but you guys are amazing. But it bears repeating. What with your designing, engineering and executing on the fly, the results are great!!! I love your beautiful videos!!!
All l can say is you two compliment each other, you’re a joy to watch.
Looks good and is a great way to create a dry storage space.
I bet the boys enjoy helping out something they'll always remember ❤
I was thinking about the kickstand on his bike. I would get a flat rock for the kickstand. This way it will not fall down his bike. Looks fantastic. GREAT JOB. GOD BLESS YOU
21:08 - yes, a piece of flagstone or slate would do nicely
I hate when these videos finish! It's so gratifying to observe you working and interacting with the children, you're an amazing family!
I didn't see any slope on the gutter? Also, I can't believe Josh hasn't installed any lighting under the deck yet!
Love you guys, you are my favorite RUclips channel and I always look forward to your next video.
Don't take offense, but I'm glad you still have years of projects yet to do!
Uh I'm thinking decades of projects to do.
Three kids three homes yep decades LOL
Don't need a slope on the gutter.
As long as its level the water will flow.
There is a slope, Josh measured the drop down.
@@brianhume4743 If you're talking about Hammond's accident, I'm not sure everyone's going to catch that reference, lol.
Just kidding Josh, following your channel I'm sure it's on your list!
You guys work so well together. Awesome job. Love it. Can’t understand how anybody can give a thumbs down. Maybe they live in a condo.
I really liked how the sun was streaming between the deck boards at the 1:05 mark, the patterns it made on the underside was way cool! 🤘✌️😎
Such a joy watching your progress, and all the activities your kids do "outdoors" instead of in front of a screen all day. Perfect "life goals"!!! 💞
Great job! I love the way you two work together to get things done. Trust me it would be great to have help. I put up 140 foot of gutters on house and 200 foot of French drains by myself.
That's how I wanna live my life - Off the grid. Awesome. God bless.
Love what you guys are doing, keep up the great work!.
You are good hard working people, may the blessing always up on you.
Congratulations y'all, the whole deck looks so good.
Here is a bunch of LOVE for your hole family. Please take and spread it.
Greets from Germany
Hi, you definitely need to do some merch with ‘notta big deal’ on it.
I found this a very satisfying video to watch.
The whole explanation about capturing the rainwater runoff answered a question I've had for the last several videos ... It never occurred to me that it might be toxic--good catch.
And as usual what seems like chaos in the beginning turns out to be a very satisfying result ... which I have come to expect from you guys.
One more thing. It always puts a big smile on my face when you show a shot of Chuck overseeing the action.
I so love the equality gesture in this relationship. The house is just an icing on a cake, while the cake is the couple.
That’s so creative for storage and just not wasting any space. Looks great
Great work. You guys are going to need a plan for the snow and ice that could get built up on the metal panels. If it builds up under there and freezes it could expand and start pushing up your deck boards
Really cool to see Ali is now riding her own 4 wheeler. Great work on the deck and good idea to park stuff under it.
It doesn’t look like you’ll need stone on the foundation wall that’s under the deck. The wall won’t be seen and would be kinda of waste…. Great work on the under deck roof. Everything you guys do is perfection.
I absolutely LOVE when the boys are included in the build.. priceless priceless priceless..
In regards to the deck runoff, just test the water after a good rainfall.
Boy when you guys do something you sure do it properly.
Great job, I love the amount of dry storage you have gained. Is there a chance that ice will build up on the metal? If so weight of the ice might become a factor. A few extra cross members would solve that.
I would not think the loads will be more than the roof
I created a similar version by laying 2x4 on top of the joists with a longitudinal diagonal cut to make a fall run off. Then over layed roofing felt and fix the upper diagonally cut on top to clamp. This also releveled the joists to lay the actual deck boards on. I also used plastic plastic roof felt edge protector to flow the rain water into the roof gutter as they were designed to do as standard. Has worked well for 15 years keeping the area dry underneath.
This water could be stored with a pair of small ponds with a brook between them having plants helping to scrub it similar to how grey water would be treated. A yard fountain for the kids to play in or just have pet 🐟 fish. Either way animals would also benefit as I don't believe any worries from stain will get thru the gavel/sand filters before entering the stream.
Doubt it’s worth the hassle. They have a well that produces tons of clean water with a massive water table
Ingenious way to keep water from going through your deck and not getting on things below deck that are stored there! 👍 Great idea!
"There's only room for one sissy in this relationship, and that's you Josh!" Josh - "Get me a bracket!" lol
I always laugh when Erin calls it a relationship. It seems like such an inadequate description. I've never seen two people who are so well matched. It's a rare thing to watch.
@@DKanon I totally agree. I've never seen a couple work so well together. Rare turf indeed!
Or hold my 🍺 Josh haha
@@DKanon especially in today's world of lets get married and I want a divorce a yr later if that.
There's one of those marriages
Like our parents and grandparents that have been married for 50, 60 and 70 .
They don't make many like that anymore.
But there's is truly a blessing I wish we all could experience .
@Piyath
WOW! Now EVERYONE knows who wears the dress in your family!
Once again you and Erin have done a beautiful job on the decking and the under roof and gutter, now all you need are some lights under there as in the winter it will be dark early morning and early afternoons, you are going to need that. A nice place to park everything for the children. Perhaps put a cement tile down for the motorbike stand then it wont have a chance to fall over. Nice to now that that is another job to tick off your list.
The downspout drain outlet is too close to the concrete footing. Consider redirecting it further (at least 10 feet) away from the footing to protect it from water erosion
I love the under deck roof idea, genius! Half basement half garage :)
It looks great guys you's have been smashing out these jobs to get done before winter hits you as you's start to get colder we start to get warmer here in Australia...good to see chuckie was in full supervising mode with Joshys new career in guttering...lol... good thing the boys are getting older and can help you with the muscle Erin...😁
Thanks for posting this video. It allowed me to show my husband how I wanted to fix the underside of our deck.
You simply just have the water tested after a rain to see if it is safe
An enormous amount of work done in jig-time! You two are a very strong couple and soon your boys will be
strong enough to really contribute!! Your off-grid dream home keeps getting better with each project.
Concerned that winter temperatures during the cold months might lend themselves into a paradox. Let’s say the sun comes out in the winter and it’s just warm enough to begin melting the exposed snow on top the deck. The water drips through and because of the shade under the deck refreezes on contact with the metal roofing underneath.. Let’s say that this becomes a continuous event for several days. How much weight can that system support before something gives way?
That's a great observation. I suspect they will enclose this area so the wind chill will not be an issue
Good Question. They could go through and double the 2x4 wood bracing under the metal sheets. Also, I would station a snow blower on that deck. That deck will be a bear to shovel in a storm. I would definitely be watching the ice build-up. The job looks super though and any little problem like this can be easily fixed...
Michael, I’m mostly a headache for other people. Lol
Ah, I'm pretty sure they are going to be shoveling the deck off, considering it is the entrance. The very little snow that would fall between the boards from shoveling would melt with that little bit of sunshine you mentioned. I don't see where there is going to be a problem.
If sagging occurs adding a diagonal cross member between posts could support any ice that could builds up in the space between the deck and under roof. Also because it is metal and black on top it will absorb energy better than the deck so it will heat heat up during the day as well.
I'm disappointed I never found this channel sooner. Top quality content were a 20 min video only seems like 5 min. Awesome.
There's a wonderful change. Used to be you had to entangle yourself with Hollywood to be a "star". Today you can be an amazing dad handsome husband, a wonderful mother beautiful wife and set your shadow over Hollywood:).! THANK YOU.
This under deck space is ABSOLUTELY GLORIOUS. It's an AMAZING idea. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SO MUCH!!!;)
I see you've got some pokeweed growing. Nice! Why use shovels to spread the gravel under the porch? No rakes?
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, my Dad use it for his construction works and yard works.
Love you guys, you are living the American dream.
You both have worked so hard, I thought I’d offer my .01 worth, it seems that your shiny new gutter might not be far out enough to catch fast moving rain from up against the house. It might shoot over the outer edge of the gutter, might. Just an idea to ponder, to the great “Off Griders”
If so we will see them adding a little height to the back edge of the gutter. But alittle water won't hurt anything .they said in the last video that would update us on the performance of it so time will tell If that happens.
Good point though 👌
That really is a genius idea! It will be so nice to have a home for everything!
Thanks for explaining the runoff situation. I hadn't thought of the potential danger.
Would definitely have been easier to build this "roof" before putting on the joists and decking!
It looks amazing and what a great use of that space, well done.
one word to describe this deck MAGNIFICENT 👏👏👏
Wonderful, you keep yourselves busy with doing what other people mostly can dream. You provide everything that every parents are wanted to their kids. Just they probably a little bit less is socialising with other kids in terms of playing with their friends. Communication wise probably they can utilises the technology to chat with cousins. Nice to see Elly on four wheeler, still remember she was attached to mother in early build. Good luck and stay happy.
Most Excellent! Very nice to see the boys helping out too!
You guys are doing a phenomenal job. Your videos are top quality and I can only imagine how much time you put into editing them for our enjoyment. So with that, I say, Thank You
Awesome dawesome super duper Kudos!!!
Congratulations of the Highest Order!
A wowzer of a deck and storage area!
Making headway BIG TIME!!!
You are doing a good job in its details which are best for a good maintenance of the house itself!
What a great idea for storage and keeping it dry. Great Job! Thanks for sharing.
please, please, PLEASE! show us the roof/gutters working in the next rain storm. way to go fam - excited for y’all to be nearing the end of another project ❤️
Never forget Erin she is a great woman and a valuable help…my best wishes for happiness
Congratulations on getting this big beautiful deck done.
I built several raised gardens using pressure-treated lumber. I used black plastic to isolate the soil from the lumber. I'd have run the downspout into a french drain. Great videography, Erin, I love seeing the kitties & other wildlife, also love seeing the kids participating.
Good job it looks beautiful, your children look happy, you both look so proud and l love the way the two of you tease each other.
Some of the best video editing I have seen. Enjoy watching each and every episode.
An ideal house for an ideal family. Keep on inspiring others. God bless
Did I really here you say nearly ready to start another build yahoo, another job done you must feel so happy things are moving along. Great work on the deck keep smiling. Dave from Australia
It is easy to work specially you've love what you're doing,at the same time making bonding with your companion/family in life
