a fun little fact - during Tulsa ‘67 (reprise) when ponyboy is talking about how he wrote a book, he holds up the first copy of the outsiders by se hinton and gives it to someone in the first row. he normally gives it to someone around the age ponyboy is canonically (14) and the inside of the book says “stay gold” and is signed by him. i find it so cute.
24:40 The reason why the song ends abruptly, because at the end of act one when pony boy and Johnny see the sign for Windrexvill that’s when they reached their stop . So they jump off the train in The last beat of the song order to get to the church
run run brother live is INCREDIBLE! the scene is done just… gorgeous… they use tires and planks to represent the train as they jump on and from car to car… it’s beautiful
Correction, it’s read in schools across the world. I’m from Australia and have read it in school, and multiple other times. Probably one of the best books ever written that I’ve read.
I am sooooo happy you reacted to this cast recording, Barbara! I highly recommend reading the original book and seeing the 1983 film adaptation. It is a beautiful story about the teen experience, gang violence and the path to self-acceptance and personal growth. I will be seeing The Outsiders in NYC later this month, and I am super excited to see this beloved book of my teenage years come to life on the stage. You are such a fun, intelligent and wonderful individual, Barbara. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reaction.
It’s also worth recommending the directors cut of the original 1983 movie The Outsiders the Complete Novel. With about 20 min of extra movie footage it’s an even better adaptation of the book, in my opinion. I’ve been a fan of the book from when I read it in school and the original movie since 1983, I was lucky enough to see it when it 1st came out.

The only thing I've heard about Outsiders is "It's like Grease and West Side Story had a baby while listening to country-western music." I agree with Barbara about "the music catching up with the lyrics". I suspect they might have been trying to make songs that might be radio-friendly so that People Who Don't Like Musicals don't immediately cross themselves and hiss away from it on first listen. It's kind of how Spring Awakening songs out of context don't scream "Broadway musical". I can imagine some young country-western artists covering these songs really well.
For "Throwing in the Towel" there was a performance done on the Today show here in New York so you get a better idea of the staging. There's also an extra line from Soda not on the soundtrack that hits pretty hard, so worth a watch just for that! ruclips.net/video/5sT53DvwD6w/видео.html&pp=ygUVdGhyb3dpbmcgaW4gdGhlIHRvd2Vs
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!! Edit: just finished the reaction, watching you react to this musical really made me live through all the feelings I felt when I first heard the soundtrack -thank you!!
14:28 you described how i feel everytime i listen to far away from tulsa- truly one of my favorite songs, they did so well with it! also at 29:47, you mustve been in shock you basically called it! i was giggling quite hard when i heard that.. 😂
You need to read the book by S E Hinton. She was 15 8n the 60s when she wrote the book. It's a quick and easy read. Stay Gold came as inspiration from a Robert Frost Poem. And Dallas committed s by cop. Oh. Or you can watch the film with pre-stars: Diane Layne Patrick Swayze Rob Lowe Emilio Estevez Ralph Macchio Matt Damon Tom Cruise Thomas C Howell
You neeeeed to react to the tonys performance they did!!!! The staging for the fight runs exactly with what you were saying! It starts as a straight forward normal rumble between rival gangs and progressively gets more and more abstract until they become just one homogeneous group of kids all facing the same way fighting (and getting totally beat up by) the same invisible force (insert your interpretation of whatever that force may be). It's just utter perfection!!!!!!!!!!
Your reaction to Little Brother and “Tell Dally, I don’t think he knows” was exactly mine. It hits me everytime. Poor Johnny and Dally😭. I love them so much. This show knew how to hurt us and it did. I wish so much that I could afford to go to NY and see it because its one of my favorite book and now it’s one of my favorite musicals, they did it so much justice.
That second line is so sad dude, the fact that he wrote it before but Pony read it not long after Dally took his own life is so tragic, especially with how much Dally loved him and Ponyboy
Ok some context on justice for tulsa Essentially cherry's bf (bob I think??) attacked pony and johnny in like a 5v2 and tried to drown pony, johnny pulls a knife and stabs bob before running to dally for help leaving them hopping on a train to an abandoned church
Do whatever you can to track down video of the show...start with the Tony's performance, but the choreography in general for the whole show is so powerful. The scene where Dallas is falling apart during Little Brother is...I don't think I took a breath for the whole song.
I read the book when I was younger, saw the movie, and the musical and somehow I feel you understood what the musical was trying to do better than me 😂 Anyway, you absolutely must listen to Suffs and I’m offended more people didn’t push that sooner.
This was one of my favorite movies ever (I live in Oklahoma and have been the museum and movie locations and everything) I went to see the musical this past week and I absolutely loved it, and the dancing and the sets were absolutely incredible. I cried so much by the end, it’s one of my favorite stories when it comes to portraying platonic relationships and realistic brotherhood and deep friendships and I just love it so much. Would definitely recommend if not the book (I’m not much of a reader) then for sure the movie! (Especially the extended version, although it’s only a little bit longer, it includes some of the most gut wrenching heart warming scenes) The cast is absolutely insane with huge names like Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and lots more wayyyy before they became popular and they’re all so incredibly young. I don’t really see many people talking about The Outsiders much online and I wish more people would react to it, I’m so glad I found someone listening to the musical cuz I’m so hyped about it rn! Seeing it live was definitely one of the coolest things, it was raining inside and the fights were crazy and the acting was just UGH so good! 💞
I LOVE everything about this reaction! So glad you enjoyed the music and definitely recommend reading the novel and watching the move (The Complete Novel version because it has about 20 extra minutes of footage as opposed to the original which cuts out a lot of the important plot points). The novel is required reading for almost all American public school students in middle/ high school. S. E. Hinton is credited with the creation of the Young Adult genre as prior to “The Outsiders”, there were no books written for teens that were realistic and talked so candidly about the very real struggles they were facing. This is my favorite book in the world and though musicals are my passion, I was a little nervous when I first heard about the adaptation as I was afraid they wouldn't do it justice, but they absolutely knocked it out of the park and some changes they made I liked better than the book! A little (ha!) summary to add context as I know some points were hard to follow without dialogue (spoilers included!): Ponyboy is 14 and the youngest of the gang. He loves movies and books, is very smart and skipped a grade in school, and runs track. He is particularly close with his brother Soda (16, almost 17), who works at a gas station and dropped out of high school after their parents died to help with the bills, though he hated school and wasn't enthusiastic about it before dropping out. Soda is happy-go-lucky, a ladies man, and "understands everyone." Darry, on the other hand, "cold and logical", is 20, and was very smart and popular in high school as the football captain. In the book, they didn't have enough money to send him to college but in the musical, he drops out after the death of their parents to take care of his brothers. He roofs houses and he and Pony have had a strained relationship since their parent's death with Darry stepping into the parental role. Their parents were killed when their car got hit by a train 8 months prior to the beginning of the story. The rest of the gang consists of Johnny (16, Ponyboy's best friend), who is very quiet but listens well and is physically and emotionally abused by his alcoholic parents. Steve, 17, is Soda's best friend, he is good with cars and has a strained relationship with his father (he is only a minor character in the musical as opposed to the book). Two-Bit is 18 1/2 and still a junior in high school, he's goofy and a kleptomaniac/ alcoholic but fun-loving (also more minor in the musical vs. the book). Dallas is 17 1/2 and has a long criminal record, described as tougher, colder, and meaner than the rest of them by Pony but has a soft spot for Johnny, his pseudo little brother. His character is much more likeable/ sympathetic in the musical imo. The musical plot opens with Ponyboy getting jumped by the Socs and the gang coming to his rescue. Dallas dubs this as Pony's "initiation" into being a true greaser (notching his first knockout), whereas Darrel is not enthused about this, arguing that he's only 14 and doesn't want him getting in trouble. Darrel reflects on how much his life has changed and how hard he has to work to keep things running smoothly. Soda and Pony talk that night in bed, Pony wondering why Darry hates him and Soda reassuring him that he just has more worries than he used to and he's proud of Pony. Pony tells him about Great Expectations, which he's reading for school, and how he has been having recurring nightmares about their parent's deaths. Pony continues to reflect on the parallels between the story and his own life and what path he wants to take. Dallas runs into Johnny outside his parent's house, where we hear them fighting. Johnny expresses that he can't go in but can't leave either, as he is afraid his father will kill his mother. Dallas gives him his switchblade and shows him how to use it, just in case. The gang (minus Soda and Darry) go to the drive in. Dallas harasses Cherry, a Soc girl, until Johnny tells him to lay off. The girls start talking with Pony and Johnny, with Pony and Cherry really hitting it off. They realize they have a lot in common and really open up to each other. Pony definitely has a little bit of a crush on her but it is certainly more of a kindred spirits thing from Cherry's POV, having found someone who is also an "outsider" in their own group and tired of the conflict between the social groups. Bob, Cherry's boyfriend and leader of the Socs (who jumped Pony in the beginning and Johnny before the start of the show), interrupts. He is furious that Pony is "making a move" on his girl and tensions escalate until Cherry breaks up with him. Bob vows revenge on Pony, who returns home late with Johnny. Darrel is furious by him breaking curfew and giving him attitude, and tensions escalate until he eventually hits Pony. Pony and Johnny run off to the park, where they imagine getting out of Tulsa and having a better life. They are interrupted by Bob and his gang, who are drunk and looking for a fight. They begin drowning Ponyboy in the fountain, until Johnny stabs Bob, killing him. Panicked, they go to Dallas for help (knowing the police will side with the Socs and filled with fear about Johnny getting the electric chair), who instructs them to jump a train out of town and hide out at an old abandoned church. Act 2 opens with the police and Socs alike searching for Ponyboy and Johnny. They cut their hair and bleach Ponyboy's so they don't match their descriptions in the paper. Pony laments on feeling like he is bad luck and brings trouble to everyone he loves (feeling responsible for his parent's death and Johnny's predicament). Johnny reassures him that he doesn't care and they're in this together. Back in Tulsa, Dallas and Darrel fight, with Darrel blaming Dallas for being a bad influence on Pony and Johnny and Dallas blaming Darrel for hitting Pony and driving him away. Darrel reflects on how he feels he has torn the family apart and contemplates giving up (open to interpretation- imo sounds like he feels Pony and Soda might be better off in foster care/ a boy's home). Soda reassures him that he is not giving himself credit and he and Pony need him. Back at the church, Pony and Johnny watch the sunset and Pony recites a poem by Robert Frost, "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Dallas arrives with a letter from Soda and Darry for Pony. Johnny states they should go back to Tulsa, he'll turn himself in, and this whole mess will be over. Dallas is furious, stating you never go back to trouble, you run from it, and that he has a friend in Iowa who will take them in and keep them hidden. Just then, a fire breaks out (from a dropped cigarette). They hear screams from the children who were having a picnic field trip down the hill that were playing in the church. Ponyboy, horrified and guilt-ridden, rushes in to save them and is joined by Johnny. Dallas runs in after them, telling them to forget the kids and get out. They successfully save the kids but Johnny is struck by a beam and trapped. Book Pony and Dally sustain minor injuries, while in the musical they escape unscathed. The greasers read the story in the paper. A big plot difference from the book/ movie to musical is the omission of the brothers reuniting at the hospital, Pony and Darry reconciliating/ Pony realizing how much Darry cares for him and his fear comes out as anger, and a long stretch with the rest of the gang hanging out at the Curtis house, Two-Bit and Pony visiting Johnny and Dallas in the hospital, etc. In the musical, we transition to the hospital right after the fire, where Johnny is critically injured. Cherry arrives and states she went to the police on their behalf and their names have been cleared. She begs Ponyboy not to fight, stating it won't make a difference, but Ponyboy is determined to on Johnny's behalf. All the greasers minus Johnny participate in a "rumble", a visually stunning choreographed fight with insane special effects. They win and rush back to tell Johnny, who informs them that "fighting's no good." He tells Ponyboy to "stay gold" and dies. They are all devastated, but Dallas breaks. He laments that the only thing he cares about (his "little brother", Johnny) has been taken from him and he has nothing left to live for. He commits suicide by standing in front of a train (a major change from the book, where he commits suicide by cop. I feel it was an appropriate change given the running motif of trains throughout the show and the fact that the actor is a POC and it would add a different meaning given the history of racially-motivated crimes with police violence). Two weeks later, Darrel and Soda plead with Ponyboy to eat dinner with them and interact. He is comatose, not speaking or reacting to anything, consumed by grief. Darrel breaks down and begs him not to give up, stating he loves him and they have already lost their parents and can't lose him, too. Cherry arrives with Johnny's clothes, stating she began volunteering at the hospital and Johnny's parents never came to collect his things. There is a letter to Ponyboy, which he reads, and begins writing in his notebook as he does so. This brings him out of his daze, and he joins his brothers at the table. When asked what he was writing about, he replies that it is a story about Tulsa and the things that happen there. He is embarrassed at the idea of reading it to them until Darrel asks if he can and Ponyboy, surprised by his interest, hands it to him. Darrel starts reading his brother's story aloud, which starts with the opening narration and song to the show. The brothers take turns reading excerpts from his story. At one point during the finale, Ponyboy hands an autographed copy of the novel to an audience member. The show ends with the full company singing to "stay gold", with Johnny and Dallas positioned above them.
HOW DID I MISS THIS?? Dude as someone who’s been seeing shows since I was like 4, I’m not kidding when I say this is only the beginning. Dare I say Outsiders is the best thing on Broadway right now. Speaking of wonderful things 👀 Perhaps an EPIC the Musical reaction? There’s a playlist of animatics that will further enhance the journey too ❤️
41:16 After Dallas dies pony is so depressed and nothing can get him to do anything Darry the oldest brother gives pony a note that JOHHNY wrote before he died that’s how stay gold is like it’s pony reading the note The poem was from an early act before the fire they were talk about how they wished things could be like this forever no socs no fights no bad but pony says nothing can be good forever Also I love your channel new subscriber
I’d love it so much if you could take a look at more of Dave Malloy’s shows (he wrote Great Comet of 1812) like Octet or Ghost Quartet?? 🙏🙏🙏 Amazing and insightful as always!
you should react to bonnie and clyde the musical (broadway cast recording) and the great gatsby the musical! they both have jeremy jordan in it, though bonnie and clyde is my favorite i saw the great gatsby on broadway in july! (and the outsiders yesterday it was so good). bonnie and clyde has a proshot online with the west end cast and jeremy jordan and i think the great gatsby has a video on youtube someone recorded themselves
Ok so first please go read the book or watch the movie i would pay to see a reaction of the movie but also if you do PLEASE look up the complete movie their is the orginal but its missing so much improtant events (even if the music is loud in the complete movie its really improtant) Second off when we hit little brother i forgot dally ended himself so when i relsied that and rhe fact you didnt know made it so much more impactfull
mthis video is so good! you should react to the secret garden musical! its so so good, its an older musical but it is incredible and very emotional i think you would love it!
So glad I found your channel! Thanks for the fun deep dive. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! An ALW classic - Any Dream Will Do is an absolute masterpiece ❤️💛💚🧡💜🤎🖤💙
