@@sysi5521 no man ive been following ur instagram since like 2018 i thought i was hallucinating. Wdym you exist outside of the bounds of insta and tumblr
Fun fact! There's a cut song called "Your Light" in which Polites tells Odysseus "let me be your light". The line "then his light went dark" from Athena is a nod to Polites dying :)
Jorge is a genius 😂 Antinuous' instruments are : - The voices of the other Suitors cause he's their leader just like Eurylochus was the '' leader '' of Ody's crew ( Eury was the one the crew listened to the most ) - Electric guitar to show he wants to replace Odysseus and - Brass just like Poseidon cause he is to Telemachus what Poseidon is to Odysseus ^^
In the original odyssey it's actually heavily implied that calypso SAs ody, multiple times even. "He spends his days, weeping on the shores, and the nights by her side, an unwilling lover with a lover all too willing " Also, calypso is a titaness, imprisoned on the island for siding with the titans, her family, in the war between the gods and titans. Even here, calypsos songs are meant to be icky and manipulative, she doesn't care that he doesn't want to be here. And the power dynamic between makes it pretty impossible for him to fight back.
Antinous is so despicable but his songs are so good I can’t 😂 (I have to constantly police myself not to sing them too loud and get the police called on me)
@17:20 Barbara you're not crazy dw!! For each character, theres a specific rhythm and melody their names are put to and its consistent for everyone throughout the whole thing except for ONE TIME in Monster during the line "i must Get to see Penelope and Telemachus so if we must sail through [insert rest of that section here]" which shows how much he's unraveling to break the musical rule that i like to call Names are the Same. Try it with any name in the show and you'll find the specific rhythm and melody for it each time!
I will say right now, the final saga has a content warning for allusions to SA and intense gore in pretty much every version except the album, so you might wanna include timestamps for viewers to skip over the song Hold Them Down, and keep a stuffed animal nearby for that song as well. It gets really, REALLY dark. I do feel like it's handled well, and Jorge includes the content warnings himself wherever possible, but he couldn't find a way to include them on the actual album, so be ready.
I don't think that the myths have much about time and Athena, but when it comes to the musical it is a part of her abilities. "No, I just made your thoughts quick" is almost a direct reference to what Jorge calls "Quick-thought", the clock you mentioned is the sound effect of that ability being used, usually so Athena can communicate with Ody and Telemachus (Seen during Warrior of the Mind, the end of Survive, Little Wolf and after Aphrodite drops the mic) Speaking of Aphrodite though, during that section of the song you can notice the clock running three times, each time slower, that's because Ares also has that ability and they are overriding each other's, each time effectively slowing down time for them further and further, as the clock ticks get farther
I love the deep dives into the story that you do, the music is so good it’s easy to get swept up in that alone but there’s a great balance in ur reactions
Totally hear ya! Sometimes I get so excited about the music that I forget to pay attention to the lyrics but Jorge also does such a great job of actively using the music for storytelling and to convey meanings that I'm always pulled back at some point
I love that when Ody's on the cliff and Calypso tries talking him down, she sayd to come back to her "open arms" and that just absolutely triggers his PTSD so he starts to hear his friends tormenting him again. His reaction to being reminded of Polities is important and has been a point of failure throughout.
she's not fine btw in the official livestream of this saga which has some animatic segments, athena gets struck by lightning "is she dead?" then she's floating and her glow is flickering, then she sees a memory of when ody gave her baby telemachus to hold, that's when she gets up and climbs the stairs leading up to zeus's throne, he keeps throwing lightning bolts at her, her shields glows red and then she loses it and blocks with her bracers, and you can see drops of blood on each step of the stairs, until finally she collapses on her knees in front of zeus, she reaches towards her father says "please let him go" then she falls dead, her eyes open and faded and her godly glow is gone I recommend the animatic by nealillustrator for god games and there are many other cool ones to look into oh btw hephestus was played by jorge's father wanted to end on a fun note instead of RIP athena
I’m sure someone’s already said it, but the voice of Hephaestus is Jorge’s dad! He helped him build the recording booth he uses for Epic, so it was only fitting he was cast as the god of the forge ❤ It’s just so cute, I love how how includes his family in the project. His sister even makes a brief cameo in the next saga! Speaking of the next saga, it is a doozy and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it. I absolutely love the Vengeance Saga, but it is probably the most controversial with fans and everyone seems to have a different take on it. It goes completely off the rails at the end, and whether that’s delightful or confusing depends on the person. So a spoiler-free heads up to brace yourself for that one lol! For some random recommendations- TV Show: Arcane Movie: Inside by Bo Burnham (I recommended a song from this, Welcome to the Internet, on Patreon a while back! That one is my personal favorite but the whole special is golden) Book: This Is How You Lose The Time War Song: The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish (specifically the live performance by Floor Jansen at Wembley. Idk it’s just a masterpiece and I am on a mission to make as many people fall in love with Floor Jansen as possible)
AAA i'm so glad you decided to focus on one saga for the last few sagas! your analysis is always SO on point it's so enjoyable athena actually has a kind of power in epic that jorge made called "quick thought" - when you hear her signature sound (like when she enters in little wolf and at the beginning of we'll be fine), that's her using quick thought and in the canon animatics, she pulls the person she's talking with into this sort of pocket dimension? (if im incorrect please correct me though) ares also has this power, so when ares enters in god games, he's kind of using a quick thought inside athena's quick thought to overpower her, which athena uses ANOTHER quick thought to overpower ares again also youre so right about the acoustic guitar and telemachus! i think jorge has said that guitar is just odysseus' instrument overall (so electric guitar when he's being ruthless, and a nylon guitar when he's being vulnerable - like in just a man) but with telemachus being odysseus' son and a more carefree version of him, a happy acoustic guitar is perfect for him, but his instrument is also apparently an 'indie piano' which jorge talked about a tiktok
"...if I fight this monster, is it you I'll find?" also "I got in a fight, and I didn't die!" At least some part of him likely believes the rumors that his father is actually dead, and the current situation is beyond hopeless.
So much fun. Wisdom Saga isnt my favorite (not that that means much with the bar so high) but its the only one that feels like a whole ass movie, in the best ways. I am incapable of just listening to just one. All or nothing. Its so good! 😅😆God Games and Little Wolf are my favorites in this saga though. In my opinion, Ayron has the BEST male voice in Epic. he really sells the role. Every time we hear him he has us by the throat.
The clock tick is actually Athena using her ability called "Quick Thought" which she uses to help Ody and Telemachus fight and to lookin into Odysseus's past to see what happened to him and how he ended up with Calypso
Calypso is a titan or at the very least the daughter of a titan. She’s Atlas’ daughter who was imprisoned on her island because she sided with her dad during the titanomachy.
@@Caedus696 Yeah its weird, what is and isn't considered a titan. Pan: not a titan, not an Olympian. Aphrodite even though she comes from the castrated balls of Ouranos and for all intents and purposes is from the same generation as Kronos is still considered an Olympian. If Aphrodite didn't exist as part of the Olympians then the definition of what is an Olympian would be so much easier, however she kind of throws a spanner in the works for defining them. Titans were seen as more chthonic in nature whereas Olympians were more "civilized". Though what separates Dionysus and chthonic immortals is a blurry line at best. That's why I normally just say immortals or Athanatoi, if we are being Greek centric, as a catch-all term. Titans aren't only those that fought against the Olympians though. There was Athena's mother, sometimes referred to as a sea nymph, sometimes referred to as the titan goddess of wisdom, Metis, though this could be the case of 2 mythological figures with the same name or similar names that one got transposed on the other. Then there was the original 6 Olympians' mother Rhea who saved Zeus by making Kronos swallow a stone given to her by Gaia. idk if Themis the goddess of justice, divine order, and law helped or just didn't side with her brothers and sisters, but she was also one of the original 12 titans that Zeus keeps as council in his court. All are considered titanesses, but were not imprisoned in Tartarus by Zeus like the other titans that fought in the Titanomachy. As for the idea that they are all children of titans. While Metis is a child of two titan parents, Themis, Rhea, Kronos, and the other 9 original titans were all born from primordials. Gaia, Tartarus, Ouranos, Chaos, Nyx, Eros (according to Hesiod's Theogony), Erebus are all considered primordial deities. Where the first 12 titans come from Gaia and Ouranos. That's why I say Calypso can be considered either a titan or a daughter of a titan, but functionally it doesn't really matter as she sided with her father and was punished for it. Sorry for the info dump, I took a university course on Greek and Roman mythology last term so all this stuff is still fresh in the mind.
7:11 Well Antinous is not the sharpest soo 13:16 I think she's considered a nymph but she is a daughter of Calypso so... 16:48 YES 20:49 This is Telemachus's Lullaby and in the animatics, it showed Odysseus letting Athena actually hold Telemachus when he was born

Yes for Jane Eyre!! I never see people talk about this one and I think Barbara would love it, especially since she likes Sweeney Todd. While the story is pretty different, they are both a bit more gothic and classic
The epic saga continues!! Haven't started yet but i am so excited to see what yoy rhink, especially given that this is probably one the greater departures from the original source material (haha bj reference!) Its good, and I've hardly heard anyone else talk about it!
For suggestions, have you considered doing any musical episodes of non-musical TV shows? Such as "Once More, With Feeling" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Or "My Musical" from Scrubs?
Omg yes that would be so fun!! Once More, With Feeling does kind of require a bit of context to fully appreciate it. If I remember correctly though My Musical works really well as a standalone
They do sound similar but these two lines were what gave it away to me: "living in this world you left behind" and "I'm stuck with your stories but no clue who you are". Telemachus is told stories about his father by multiple characters in the poem but is still compelled to go search for him to prove them true or untrue so that was a good line :)
Odd thing, you are both right and wrong about a specific rhythum for people saying Odysseus's name. Just not the time you pointed out, that wasn't the rhythum
You kinda seem surprised by Odys suicidal thoughts, so I thought I would share this passage from the Odyssey: "Atlus Daughter it is who holds Odysseus captive, luckless man. Despite his tears, he was forever trying to spellbind his heart with suave and seductive words and wipe all thoughts of Ithica from his mind. But he is straining for no more than a glimpse of hearth-smoke drifting up from his own land Odysseus longs to die..." - Book 1
I don't really like defending any of the suitors in Epic - especially Antinuous, but that line in Legendary about 20 years isn't about "move on from your dead husband" its about "we've spent 20 years without a king or an army". Like it's not REALLY their motivation, but having Penelope and Telamachus ruling for 20 years probably isn't as good as Odysseus ruling, since he'd likely have been trained for it and they likely weren't. It's unlikely any of the suitors would be BETTER than them, but being frustrated about having placeholder rulers for 20 years makes sense. The suitors in epic ARE still awful though. Also, with calypso, Odysseus threatened to kill her because moments after he told her he was married she tried to get him to sleep with her. In fact in the original myth Odysseus was pretty explicitly raped by calypso. Repeatedly. I think daily? “In the nights, true, / he'd sleep with her in the arching cave - he had no choice - / unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing” (5.170-172) In Epic she never got so far as actual rape as far as I can tell - but it's still IMMENSELY disrespectful of Odysseus, his marriage, and his personal boundaries.
I believe there’s a council of elders that need to okay whoever the next king is. They got rid of Odysseus’s dad as king because he supposedly went crazy. That’s why Telemachus is not just automatically the king and why the suitors have to wait, because the council said that the next king has to marry Penelope. Though the suitors have broken xenia so it’s weird that Zeus hasn’t done anything as the protector of strangers/guests. I.e. the Greek custom and practices of being both a good host to random people who enter their house and being a good guest.
@Barbara2.0 ok, then I have another (worse) suggestion: Rangers Apprentice, I haven't seen a lot of people talk about it, but personally really enjoyed it.
Odysseus's instrument is actually BOTH electric and acoustic guitar, so you're absolutely not reading too much into it. Because despite guitar being Odysseus's thing, 3 other characters actually have a moment of using it and it's always in moments when yhey're trying to emulate or imitate Odysseus. It happens in Mutiny when Eurylochus attacks Odysseus as he's literally trying to take Ody's place as captain. It happens in Legendary cause duh, Father-son. And then it happens in Little Wolf because one, Telemachus is trying to emulate his father's strength but it's also Antinous, and the suitors in general, trying to take Ody's place as King.

i beg of you watch the livestream animatics. they give a lot of context for appearances and what's happening
Will do :)
Odysseus says, 'let me close my eyes' as he stands on the cliff
Recall that he told the infant, 'close your eyes, and spare yourself the view'
Odd thing, you are both right and wrong about a specific rhythum for people saying Odysseus's name. Just not the time you pointed out, that wasn't the rhythum
What do you mean??? When is it? I was so convinced it was that rhythm
It'll come up in the future, I promise you won't be able to miss what they're talking about!
Or rather, it'll come up again and then it'll stand out to you
Odysseus is sung like that in different beast and mutiny
@@marcus_jbIt's also used for Eurylochus whenever Ody needs to speak to him as his second in command
I'd like to suggest Once on this island! I feel like you'd like it
Rec: The Dolls of New Albion - the song plot is loaded and it would so fun to breakdown
“In the nights, true, / he'd sleep with her in the arching cave - he had no choice - / unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing” (5.170-172)
In Epic she never got so far as actual rape as far as I can tell - but it's still IMMENSELY disrespectful of Odysseus, his marriage, and his personal boundaries.
Oh absolutely! He has the right to want to kill her tbf. And you're also right about the source material, it's way more violent
Books? I would recommend Mistborn, it's really good.
Amazing, that's on my list already, thank you! 🤩 If you have TikTok I'm hoping to share more film/book-related content over there this year
@Barbara2.0 ok, then I have another (worse) suggestion: Rangers Apprentice, I haven't seen a lot of people talk about it, but personally really enjoyed it.
Oh and it gets worse. Nice 😀
Yep. The EPIC community in a nutshell
❤❤❤
great
