Some facts not BS 1)- Ty Cobb came from a family of abolishinists.His father was a lawyer and Georgia state senator who advocated for equal treatment under the law for blacks. 2)-Ty Cobb is on record for allowing blacks into MLB in 1928 as a player/manager for the then Philadelphia A's 19yrs before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. 3)-Ty Cobb as a large shareholder of Coca-Cola sponsored many black owned businesses in and around royston,GA. 4)- Upon his death in 1962 Ty Cobb was worth an estimated 13 million $ and in his will he alloted some proceeds to go to youth baseball in Georgia and he stipulated that these youth baseball leagues be integrated. Ty Cobb like all of us, was a flawed man with personal demons during his life,but alot lies and half truth's have been spread about him since his death mostly the demonization of him as a raging maniac of a racist.he wasn't. Mr.O'Niell is a class act,a man of dignity and character and I'm glad he schooled that bimbo reporter who clearly was trying to goad buck into her narrative.

Well done. Buck had it right. Cobb was hypercompetitive, and he was going to defeat his opponent regardless of their color. I think he became more gracious and knowledgable as he aged, a smart man making up for his lack of education as a kid.

Shame on this interviewer! She constantly tried to paint O'Neil in a box as just another angry Black man. O'Neil, in his wisdom, saw right through that, and checked her ('Let me tell you something, girl'!). He was attempting to give an understanding as to what shaped Cobb's behavior (the unfortunate ways of the South, plus a traumatic family experience!). Having an understanding of how a man acts doesn't condone the behavior! But it does go to the source in order to in order to find solutions to changing that behavior!
Agreed as to the interviewer, and as to Buck O'Neill's character, but he was not infallible and he obviously didn't know the facts about Cobb who publicly and forcefully advocated letting Blacks compete in the big leagues, very early, WAY before Branch Rickey. He was descended from abolitionists who refused to serve in the Confederate military, and who were ostracized in the late 1800s for advocating the interests of Southern Blacks. Disappointing that Buck was unaware of this. He wasn't a professional historian, he was just repeating what people used to say about Cobb, and I realize he (Buck) was a man of generous spirit. But he got it wrong this time.

2)-Ty Cobb is on record for allowing blacks into MLB in 1928 as a player/manager for the then Philadelphia A's 19yrs before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier.
3)-Ty Cobb as a large shareholder of Coca-Cola sponsored many black owned businesses in and around royston,GA.
4)- Upon his death in 1962 Ty Cobb was worth an estimated 13 million $ and in his will he alloted some proceeds to go to youth baseball in Georgia and he stipulated that these youth baseball leagues be integrated.
Ty Cobb like all of us, was a flawed man with personal demons during his life,but alot lies and half truth's have been spread about him since his death mostly the demonization of him as a raging maniac of a racist.he wasn't.

The movie "White Men Can't Jump" is the exact same thing, thinking you're superior to everyone else based on your skin color and theirs at something. It's not a solely White or Black or Asian or any race specific to humanity either. Tons of people in every region of the world think they are superior or their culture is superior is some way.
Well done. Buck had it right. Cobb was hypercompetitive, and he was going to defeat his opponent regardless of their color. I think he became more gracious and knowledgable as he aged, a smart man making up for his lack of education as a kid.
@@ktpinnacle Cobb was educated as a child. He was raised in an upper middle class family. He was exceptionally intelligent, and that combined with his natural athletic ability, and drive, propelled Cobb into becoming the best player of all time!!

With all due respect to Mr. O'Neil, Ty Cobb was not told he was superior to blacks. He came from a family of educated Southern abolitionists, and Cobb was one of the early advocates of blacks playing together with whites.

Buck was one of the greatest ballplayers who ever lived. Apparently, he was an even better human being. And that's his real legacy.

Shame on this interviewer! She constantly tried to paint O'Neil in a box as just another angry Black man. O'Neil, in his wisdom, saw right through that, and checked her ('Let me tell you something, girl'!). He was attempting to give an understanding as to what shaped Cobb's behavior (the unfortunate ways of the South, plus a traumatic family experience!). Having an understanding of how a man acts doesn't condone the behavior! But it does go to the source in order to in order to find solutions to changing that behavior!
Agreed as to the interviewer, and as to Buck O'Neill's character, but he was not infallible and he obviously didn't know the facts about Cobb who publicly and forcefully advocated letting Blacks compete in the big leagues, very early, WAY before Branch Rickey. He was descended from abolitionists who refused to serve in the Confederate military, and who were ostracized in the late 1800s for advocating the interests of Southern Blacks. Disappointing that Buck was unaware of this. He wasn't a professional historian, he was just repeating what people used to say about Cobb, and I realize he (Buck) was a man of generous spirit. But he got it wrong this time.

What do you make of the fact that Cobb called early and unequivocally for the integration of major league baseball? Do you think he identified more closely with Confederate ancestors, or with his Methodist grandfather who immigrated out of North Carolina due to his objections to slavery? @Keeper Spencer I believe Ty Cobb's great-grandfather was Thomas Reade Roots Cobb, who founded the Lumpkin Law School at the University of Georgia, served as a delegate to the Confederate Provisional Congress (where he quite possibly penned the Confederate Constitution), raised his own regiment of troops, “Cobb’s Legion,” whom he led into battle, and rose to the rank of general in the Confederate Army. During a fierce exchange of fire with Union troops, Thomas Reade Cobb was killed in action during the Battle of Fredericksburg, in Virginia, in 1862.
