Our Favorite Non Rookie Cards To Collect

- Sports card collecting can be a challenge when it feels like only rookie cards have value. In this video the Spitballin' Team shares what types of non rookie cards they like to collect. We will go over photos, certain sets, parallels, and more!
On the ball with this I feel. Im a yankee guy but fell in love with the '2019 Topps Ted Williams Variation '. I own one and its of him inside a WWII jet fighter... such a badass card ! Nothing beats baseball + American history :)
Chris here - YES! That is a badass Ted Williams card!
Just started collecting image variations across players, based on the image. Been fun so far. Good commentary, appreciate ya'll
Chris here - it’s a really fun rabbit hole to go down!
Enjoy it!
Thanks for watching
Great video. I kept waiting for someone to mention the 2020 Topps Chrome Juan Soto carrying his bat to first base SP. Super memorable moment from an awesome WS
Chris here - yeah that’s a great card with a great image. Have you seen the 2020 Opening Day SP?? Might be an even better shot of the same moment!
One of the best moments in recent seasons -- awesome that it was captured and appears on multiple SPs!
The 2020 Phillies McCutchen SP has held remarkable value for a non-HOF player or a team that isn't beloved nation wide
Chris here - players like mccutchen are beloved by their fan base. Pirates fan will always love him. He may not sniff the HOF but his cards will always have value. Especially rare stuff like SSP.
Check out @bluehen2121 on IG for an amazing mccutchen pc.
Thanks for watching.
That's such a memorable image -- shows how much that can affect things.
Thanks again guys....I team and player collect. For player collecting, I keep a worksheet of players I like and track in columns, Name | Rookie Year | Rookie Card Year | MVP 1 | MVP 2 | MVP 3 | Cy Young 1 | Cy Young 2 | World Series 1 | World Series 2 | World Series 3 | Other Key Years (such as Triple Crowns, WS MVP)
Chris here - you’re making me feel very disorganized!! 😂😂
Jeff here: that's incredible! Thanks for sharing!
The best is when a great image lines up with a great stat year and a great parallel. The 2011 hope diamond ichiro checklist card where he is doing his pre pitch stance and it says 10 straight years of 200 plus hits.
That is a FANTASTIC card!
GREAT example!
Love the picks!
Haha I did a "wait what" double take at the end there!! Had to show this to the wife as a rare example of my jokes not always being as bad as her eye rolls would lead one to believe. Thanks guys!
Haha! It was a good one -- and we talked about it on tonight's Blabbin' 'Bout Slabbin' too!
Chris here - BRAVO!!!!
Soto 2019 Topps Chrome xfractor 2nd year…it’s a beauty!
Yes it is! I love his second year image
Great topic! I collect Topps base cards from the year the player won a major award autographed with the inscription of the year & award.
I only invest in Rookies, but believe a players’ last card, kabooms, and true gold chrome refractors would the only other options.
Hard to argue this, thanks for commenting!
Chris here - would you consider adding Topps black parallels to the list?
Luv variations and sp and ssp of my favorite players!!! Great show guys
Nice! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Chris here - 💯💯
A full run of a players flagship SSP is a must for player collectors.
I really appreciate Gold Cup Cards !! I feel like a true rookie card should show that players rookie season !! That would end the debate !! Judge cards that show his 62 HR MVP season should be a treasured card !!
Chris here - I’m with you, I LOVE a good topps gold cup card. Love them!! Especially an image variation or a black parallel.
Thanks for watching!
That totally makes sense - the hard part would be having to wait until late in a player’s rookie season to actually GET a card of them from their rookie year.
They should have a buyback of short prints and have them autographed
Chris here - that would be a really interesting idea for a future Archives set or something.
I wish stadium club included very limited autos of their image variations.
That could be a very cool - limited - idea.
Just found this channel. Love it. Do any of you share how you organize your collection? Would love to hear about it.
I collect entire career runs of cards of players i like. I also like to collect graded rookies of playoff/finals mvps of the major sports and pair them with a card from the year the player won the award. I believe that adds resale value to otherwise common cards or players
The playoff/Finals MVP pairing with the rookie is a very cool idea! Thanks for sharing!
Phil brings up a good point about SP and SSP cards regarding having to explain the significance to potential buyers. Especially when we look to the future 5 maybe 10+ years from now. My example is the 2008 stadium club DiMaggio cut out card I sold where I had to explain to people correcting my description or questioning the validity of the card I personally pulled from the pack. I regret selling, but was just too annoyed to continue explaining the story. Thanks
Thanks for the comment. It definitely is a concern, having to explain how rare a card is.
Chris here - In the last few years interest and knowledge of the SP/SSP market has definitely increased. But you are right - selling to someone who isn’t aware of them would be extremely tough. But they aren’t the audience anyway.
It does make you appreciate the simplicity of a topps black!
I agree with the comments of image variation, they re mixture collecting and potiential growth in value. Like any commodity demand must outstrip supply. Typically I don't buy non rookies or 1st year of new team unless the player's RC non base is out of reach price wise. I did this with Trout and less degree with ohtani, bought their image variation because it fits mixture I mentioned. Investment wise maybe Trout SP work out. If not I still have enjoyable unique cards. Great clip you are truly the best and learned a ton from you.
@@Joe-cf3vo thanks for watching! And which Ohtani Image Variation did you choose?
Counterpoint to the “the more story you have to tell the less valuable it is” statement would be that as a collector, wouldn’t one want to tell the story and that be where the value is? Either a personal story from a year or the award/breakout/best season story of a favorite player being good to the collector/collection. Would depend on what type of player collector one is but I really enjoy cards with a story even if they’re not as valuable as rookie card or original team counterparts. Looking at value with an investors eyes if one has to use a paragraph to explain why the specific card has value I agree is not the same as “rookie card gold parallel”. But for fun with cardboard pictures sake I think a story is valuable even if not monetarily.
Chris here - I love a good card story, too. Especially when the image has significance.
Another positive about SSP type cards, fewer people Amy know about them, but the ones that do are passionate, well informed collectors who understand rarity and will pony up for this cards when they can.
Love this take - thanks for commenting!
I thought you guys were going to show cards that you guys like that are not really worth a lot but you like their picture
Sounds like a good idea for a future episode! Thanks for watching!
Another solid video. I mostly invest in rookies or 1st BC autos, but I do like to buy stadium club non-rookie autos, SPs, and parallels for guys like Soto and Acuna (RIP)
Chris here - show me a great image with an auto on it and I’m in!
Jeff here: I'm in a pretty similar boat, I stick to the rarer non-rookies.
Awesome stuff as usual fellas! I like the surprise topic videos 🎯 cool concept, you guys should rotate between the" Brady Bunch" host right to left meaning @Teapot youre up next! 😉. Would be a cool concept for sure!
Thanks for the feedback!
Chris here - could be fun to shake it up, but I am nowhere near as focused as Scott!
Thanks for watching!
Historically speaking it’s always been images>accolades. For example 1953 Bowman Pee Wee Reese has one of the best images ever on a sports card, and the card has a ton of value. 1968 is Bob Gibsons massive MVP season arguably the best pitching season of all time, and it does absolutely nothing for the value of his 1968 Topps card
Great examples! Thanks for commenting.
Jeff's mustache is on point 👌
💯💯💯💯
I’m a JV collector and I love cards from his Triple Crown year! ❤
Aha! I knew there would be some collectors -- so do you collect the actual year or the following year when it shows his Triple Crown stats on the back??
Chris here - yes! This makes perfect sense. Do you have a copy of his SP where he’s holding 2 balls from his No hitters?
I also always look forward to cards the year after a World Series win.
Thanks for watching!
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin I like the triple threads from the next year! I also collect the cards from the TC year.
@@SpitballinCards No SP unfortunately. I’ve probably missed the window on that one. Maybe I can find a deal at a show one day
I collect based on significant sets, incredible images and notable yeas. Alll are important and vary to certain degrees, it's impossible to rank as each category has legendary cards! As a collector, all you can do is buy what speaks to you and what fits with your PC. For me collecting Lebron, any card from his Cavs championship run, or celebrating that is awesome. Or with Greinke, it's definitely 2009 Cy young or 2013-19 peak years (but I prefer KC unis). I will never buy a card of his in a Houston uni! Every player I collect is because of a special time that I connect with, so I collect corresponding cards 👌
Crap. You guys are homing in on exactly how I’ve been collecting for many many years. It is a heck of a lot cheaper.
Chris here - I love a good player run with golds, blacks or image variations.
Thanks for watching!
I was worried for a second that you guys were going to ruin my collecting. Yes, yes, player/team specific significant year cards are trash... Hey look over there! A true blue rookie! *places $3 bid on gold 2023 Acuna*
Glad you found a perfect niche for you! Thanks for watching!
@@ZoderOne😂😂
What do you think of the 2014 Bowman Sterling MOOKIE BETTS Refractors non auto or auto ?
Not for investment purposes, but I have always valued cards from an MVP/Cy Young year. Cards are an almanac of the season so looking at a card and knowing that when this card was new (player X) was the story of the year.
My daughter loves Aaron Judge and atomic and sapphire cards. So we put together a run of Judge’s Bowman’s Best atomic cards 2017 (Base and Raking Rookies) - 2022 (base) and switched to aqua in 2023. We are also collecting all Sapphire base cards through the years and sets (Topps and Bowman) and one day we hope to complete with a 2017 sapphire rookie. All purely collecting and enjoying the research and hunt to put together a curated set of his career. Separately, any big moments I appreciate the Topps Now which describe the event to someone holding the card. Like Judge’s 62 HR Topps now card. We watched it live so the image and description tell the story.
Chris here - I love this. So great to hear about collectors and their collections. To do this with your daughter is just so cool.
Good luck with your sapphire run!
Have you seen the 2019 stadium club judge? One of his best card images.
Thanks for watching!
@@SpitballinCards 2019 TSC is a good one. We have a PSA 9 of the 2017 black foil (hand over heart) and these photos just have an air of prestige to them.
Awesome way to get kids involved in the hobby - great work, Dad!
@@Sportscardwhateveryes they do! A 2017 Gold Minted recently sold on eBay. I’m mad I missed it.
Somebody tell T-Pott he’s talking into the wrong part of that mic. It’s a side-address mic. Not end-address. (The side should face his mouth, not the end.)
Will pass it along - thanks!
hey guys i have a question hopefully between the four of you can maybe answer my question. i have 2 gunner Henderson 2023 series 1 rainbow foil rc and when i was looking at them the other day i noticed one has a topps logo and the other one does not. i have been searching the Internet since then searching for a answer and i have found nothing about it. i have looked at several 100 listings and sold ones and i have seen one othwr with no label and it was in a psa case and it was not labeled any different then a normal rainbow foil. but anyway do you know anything about this? is it more valuable because its rarer? should i get it graded and should i note this to them?
Chris here - my guess is this was just a printing error by topps. The foil for the logo just didn’t print.
Interesting that PSA didn’t note that on the label on the graded copy you saw.
Is it more canjam me? Maybe to the right buyer but not necessarily.
I’ve noticed that BGS historically has been more likely to note things like this on their slab when grading.
I’ve been stockpiling the 2020 stadium club chrome soto shuffle refractors
Great video. I am new at this. What is an SP & SSP? How can you tell?
Chris here - oh boy.
These are image variations. So the card is basically the same as the base card, but has a different image.
Some are rare, some and incredibly rare.
You can find checklists and image galleries on Beckett and cardboardconnection.
Thanks for watching and hit me up on IG if you have more questions.

Short Print & Super Short Print
I like the gold foils from Topps. They aren't numbered, but they're actually in lower supply than standard gold cards numbered to the year they come out since they are a Jumbo exclusive. It may have increased recently, but a couple years ago there was somewhere around 650-700 gold foils of each card. Personally, I think they look better than the standard golds, having more of a chrome look. And I think the community will eventually catch on to the fact they are the career parallel.
I've also always liked the Gold Cup cards for second year guys who excelled as rookies. You can find Gold Cups of really good players who debuted over the past 10 years or so, in dollar bins. If we are thinking in the long term, excluding the more recent few years where the print runs have gotten crazy, gold cups might be more profitable in terms of percentage than RCs. The Shohei rookie you pay $50 for now will likely not be more than a couple hundred dollar card in our lifetime. But the gold cup you can buy for about $2 has a decent shot at getting to $25+. So the RC gets you, if it gets to lets say $400 which is an 800% profit, the $2 Gold Cup getting to, lets say $20, gives you 1000% profit.
Lastly, HOF game used relics. Not for value, just for coolness. I have a few I got in group breaks. Biggio, Cepeda, Gossage... With my top 3 being Red Shoedenist (I assume I spelled that wrong), Nolan Ryan and a quad relic of Lou Gehrig /3. Also got a few potential HOF relics in Trout, Judge, Rizzo (not looking likely), Stanton.
If you don't try to find chunky patches or numbered parallels, you can get relics of really great players for under $10. And it is just cool to own. I really don't understand why they aren't more popular with collectors.
*(1st paragraph) RARER parallel, not "career" parallel.
We are gonna look at most cards and call them junk. Or you're gonna remember collecting them as a kid and hold on to them for nostalgic value.
Good stuff guys. I understand what what Scottie is saying about buying rookie cards, but many rare cards are just too expensive in the top rookies. Kinda like buying vintage rookies. Sometimes you got to look somewhere else. Generally, I believe Topps makes a better product and has much better images than Panini. That being said, no doubt Panini has done a much better job promoting there case hit inserts than Topps has. When looking at non rookies cards (also non auto), I enjoy the Topps SP (image variations), Homefield Advantage, and the Mood Rings in Bowman product. As a big Heritage guy, the Chrome # 999, Image variation (Nickname as well) and the Black Chrome are also where I look to collect. Until next time...
Love your channel but Scott every time you do a comparison, its ALWAY Mookie Betts. Try another player for once. I
You noticed that, eh? 😂😂
Cut him some slack, sometimes it’s Billy Butler! 🤣 Thanks for watching!
You talk about who you collect 🤷♂️.
Also, I’m my defense, I have DRASTICALLY scaled back the Mookie talk haha
Could you guys make a video on shohei ohtani japanese rookie cards from 2013. I just picked one up and was interested on your guys takes on them or any Japanese players rookie cards really. Thanks guys
Chris here - I don’t know much about ohtanis Japanese cards. Or ichiro’s for that matter.
I decided to just stick with the US sets, for better or worse.
Maybe some of my fellow spitballers know more about them. I’ll find out.
Thanks for watching!
@@SpitballinCards Thanks Chris, appreciate you!
Just some feedback, for newer card collectors or people getting back into it, it would be very beneficial to show examples of the cards you’re talking about. So many variations of cards it’s hard to decipher.
Just a little shorty episode today.
Short and sweet!
👏👏👏
i have some shohei ohtani rc and some auto card
Can’t go wrong with Ohtani cards! Thanks for watching
👏👏👏👏
Short and quick as Phil likes it
💯
Scott, why doesn't Mookie Betts autograph for Topps?/
Chris here - he signed an exclusive deal with fanatics years ago. We’ve all been waiting for new autos since fanatics bought topps but so far, nothing.
Maybe these new jumbo card autos are the start!
Hi Chris. Thank you for the info. I don't collect modern baseball but Mookie is one player I'd be interested in buying a few cards of. Just started looking and noticed he has very few autos.
@@12thandgrantcollectibles Yeah that's what makes his on-card rookie autos so special -- and under appreciated, in my opinion, compared to guys who have signed everything the last decade.
@@12thandgrantcollectibles yep - nothing last 2014 that’s on card. A few left over stickers in 2015.
If you can nail down an in add rookie auto or one of his 2014 Bowman Chrome autos, go for it!
@@SpitballinCardsHis bowman chrome autos aren't cheap. Hoping a PSA 9 refractor auto pops up at auction. The PSA 10s are higher than I would want to spend on a current player.
What about the MVP Buy-Back program cards - Notable or not? (Remember they bought back all chrome base and parallels, so in theory they could be numbered and then short printed from that count) and some were auto'd
Chris here - I don’t think I ever saw any of these hit the market. Did you?
I’ll be looking for Acuna in 2024 Topps Chrome
@@SpitballinCards Yes sir, I picked up the Judge & Goldschmidt Refractors /125 with the MVP BuyBack stamps. Plan on getting Ohtani/Acuna to continue the chase
What a ripoff hobby.
