As ALWAYS a fun, fascinating, well-done foray into food and culture. Never need to skip or fast forward! As someone who has worked for years with the Maya and has been studying Meso-American ancient cultures and sites for decades, I just want to add: The word "Mayan" only refers to the languages. When referring to the people and/or culture you use "Maya." i.e. "What sort of food do the Maya eat?", "Is Maya food typically spicy?", "Are you Maya or of European ethnicity?", "What do you know about the history of the Maya?" As you probably know standing next to the pure Maya, the Indio, anyone of European heritage will tower over them. I'm 5'11" and with 99% of them, I could rest my elbow on the top of their head and read a book. By Kay's facial features and height, it is obvious when she's standing next to the Maya ladies that she is Mestizo, and not 100% Maya. Menac is Quiche, so her dad is at least 50$ Maya and likely her mom is Indio. I also never met someone that was Indio or Maya and couldn't speak Quiche and some dialects. It's nice to see someone as young as she is being interested in her roots - this is one of the things I love about this show and what Sonny does for many of the co-hosts.
There is no such thing as the “European” standard/ “Eurocentric”. It is an American made up ideology to push White American/Northern European white supremacy. Europe is a continent not an ethnicity nor a race just like all continents. There are different European diasporas in regards to race and ethnicity and genetic DNA origins. Are all Asians one ethnicity/race? NO. Are all Africans the same? NO. Are all Americans the same? NO. Europe has always been a multi cultural, multi ethnical and multi racial continent due to the Mediterranean and due to the fact that parts of Southern Europe are closer to Africa than mainland Europe itself. I am of Southern European Latin Mediterranean diaspora specifically southern Italian Latin Mediterranean diaspora and we look absolutely nothing like Northern European diaspora due to our differences in ethnicity, race and gentic DNA. And we have typical brown Mediterranean features with olive skin which browns very easily due to melanin production in our skin. And yes we as Mediterranean people have wavy, deep waves and curly hair. Not straight. And yes for the uneducated North Americans and other uneducated countries that have been influenced by the USA REAL ethnically Latino men and women are us people who are predominantly racially Mediterranean and of ACTUAL Latin origin as we descend from the REAL Latino Mediterranean ancestors of ITALY and Roman derived LATIN EUROPE due to our ethnicity from the REAL Latino Mediterranean ancestors of ITALY. The American misappropriation, mutilation and cultural Rape of foreign Latin European terms needs to be exposed. During hitlers time we were called “the chaotic Latin Race” by Northern European supremacist. And still are called Wogs, terrone etc. By Northern Europeans. There are No “white” Mediterraneans. Just more cultural assimilation, cultural erasure and cultural negation in order to achieve cultural erasure of many people. I suggest Learning actual European history if you’re going to attempt speak upon it.
Feels like I'm torturing my empty stomach watching this episode at this hour🥺.. Looks so yummy 😋 wanna bite few😋😋 You never fail to amaze me and rest of the BEFRS family Sonny ❤
Many tease on us because they were under the rule of Spain for sometime that why people form the Philippines are sometime confused with Mexican because of the skin color
Latin America is Just a term due to being conquered and ruled by Latin European countries. Just like no one is going around calling English speaking America Anglo America, uneducated people have taken the term “Latin” America out of context.
@@mr.talentedcake423 Technically no, Philippines was under New Spain (Mexico). It was the Tlaxcalteca and Nahua people who were part of the Spanish Crown. Notice how there are Nahuatl words in the Philippines.
This video is so incredible. Feel shy at same time for not being able to produce such content though from the same place itself and feeling proud on the other way for having this uniqueness in doing things 😅
IF YOU THINK YOUR MEXICAN YOUR NOT, YOUR AN ISRAELITE GO DO SOME RESEARCH AND YOU BETTER NOT BE EATIN NO SWINE JESUS IS GONNA SLAUGHTER ALOTTA PPL 4 THAT REPENT AND KEEP YAH'S COMMANDMENTS YOUR WELCOME BROTHER #RISE ISRAEL
In my personal opinion, Sonny has kind of taken over the role that the late great Anthony Bourdain held. It's not just a travel show or a food show, it's a show about fearless cultural exploration. The only difference I would say is that Sonny is pure wholesomeness, whereas Bourdain was edgy and very counter-culture. But I think they both share the same life mission.
Authentic Mexican food is the greatest food in the world. Ive had the privilege of trying several dishes. Buche* (dont know if i spelled that right?) Is some of the best meat I've had on a torta. Mmmmm. This video made me incredibly hungry for Mexican food!!!
Oh this makes me miss living in Houston where a few of my buddies would bring in all sorts of these authentic Mexican and Mayan foods that their wives made. One of my good friends was a dude named Moises who was 19 when we met. He had just gotten married to a girl whose entire family came from a small village in the Yucatan. There were a couple days where he'd asked if I had tried any Mayan food and (obviously, coming from Indiana) I said no, so he handed me a little plate from the lunch his wife made. After 5 minutes, I told him that I wanted his wife to make extra food to send with him to work, and I would basically pay for the entirety of whatever meal she made if he'd bring me in a portion. This girl could easily have been a professional chef. It wasn't just that the food was good, she literally made these absolutely gorgeous plates of food, included 4 types of salsa and 3 different types of tortilla (2 of each). She got fresh milk from her parents' cows, every ingredient was 100% homemade, and she would send me about half of the entire meal she made. Once every week or two, I'd see Mo walking into the shop with a damned grocery bag full of aluminum baking trays for me and that was always the best day of he week. I only knew this girl from her cooking, but when I finally met her in person, I got to thank her for her work and tell Moises that he needed to stay on his toes before someone snatched her up 😆. It was really cool to meet someone that had such an incredibly different life and who had been given these recipes that were passed down for 10+ generations. There was one day where Moises and I were talking about hunting and the subject of feral hogs came up. When he told me that they use those hogs basically the same way as any other pig, I offered to kill one for them as a source of free protein. After killing a 180-200 pound hog while testing a newly built rifle, we got it thrown into his truck so he could take it back home. After about a week, he came back in to work with about 500 tamales and a ton of random other pork preparations. They were pretty heavily seasoned because of that extra gamey flavor of feral hog, but it was still many times better than store-bought pork. We ended up handing out tamales by the dozen to people at work and that single hog was able to feed their family for about a whole month. We need more tight-knit communities like this where we actually get to reap the benefits of a multicultural society. Some of my really good friends came from places all over the world that I would have never heard anything about otherwise. I had friends from various regions in Mexico, Canada, Columbia, Paraguay, Cameroon, Niger, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Germany, Poland, South Africa, Crimea, Czech Republic, India, UAE, New Zealand, Estonia, and even Cuba. The funny part about all that was the incredible cultural difference between all of these immigrants (to America) and the spoiled American-born people. All of the people (with 1 exception I can recall) who came to the US were staunch supporters of the American ideals. One guy from Camaroon fell into the leftist indoctrination scheme where they believe America is some evil, racist shithole. But literally every other immigrant I met (legal or otherwise) loved what this country stood for and were all grateful to be here. I even took several folks out to the shooting range which was a total blast. I still obviously look back on all this nostalgically so getting this little reminder of having my horizons opened to these other cultures is always a pleasant experience.
That’s was a lot to read. And all I learned unfortunately is that you like most North Americans are Not aware that America is a continent and Not a place located in the USA. America includes, North, south and Central America America. And indigenous Americans are the people native to the American continent, people like the Mayans are indigenous Americans.
@@elettramia6380 That was a lot to read and all I learned is that you’re not aware they teach the amount of continents differently throughout the world…For example in the U.S and Canada we are taught that there are 7 continents and not 6 or 5 which are taught in other countries…So we have South Americans and North Americans but we call U.S citizen’s Americans well because we can call ourselves whatever we want and because America is literally in our countries name…Heres a example why. Mexicos full name is “United Mexican States” so they call themselves Mexicans Americas full name is “United States of America” so they call themselves Americans. BUT continent wise we see ourselves as North Americans, and the people down south across central America are called South Americans. Therefore you have no right to tell him he’s incorrect when there are literal professionals that agree with how he views the world.
As a very proud Young Mexican women With ancestors of different regions/ states of Mexico and with professional family members that are chefs, I would like to mention that the Mayan culture is very diverse, the Mayans in Mexico are very different among themselves, Mayans are separated into different sub Mayan groups, each Mayan sub groups have very different gastronomes ( different ways of cooking and invented different recipes) traditions and speak very different Mayan languages. This dish cochinita pibil is a unique recipe only to the Yucatán Mayan people of Mexico with yes influence of the Nahuas indigenous people of the central region of Mexico ( making a hole 🕳 and cooking food under ground for many hours in Mexico originated from the Nahuas ancestors of the Aztecs). Nixtamal, tortillas, atole, tamales to just mention a few, were invented my the Nahua indigenous people not Mayans ( nixtamal, tortilla, maíz, atole, tamales are Nahuatl words from the Nahuas not Mayans…. A fact that can be researched). The Olmecas indigenous people of Mexico are a civilization that existed long before the Mayans and the olmecas discovered cacao ( chocolate ) in precolonial México and introduced it to other indigenous tribes of Mexico Mayans, Aztecs, Zapotec, ect. Corn 🌽 originated in México and the indigenous people of México domesticated it in the high lands of central Mexico ( the Mayans were not the first civilization to discover corn they were introduced to corn ) and after many years introduced it to other indigenous tribes in Mexico 🇲🇽, after many years corn was introduced to all the Americas.
the oldest corn was found in southern Guatemala same with the oldest cacao dna. all the central Americans were the same people with a tiny bit diff cultures but olmec and maya are the names given to them thousands years after. the "Maya" though are the longest running civilization of people in the Americas along with the Inca. the aztec were only around the same amount of time as the europeans, both have very little connection to the Americas and its history.
@@krono5el sorry my friend, your statement is false. The olmecas/ olmecas is a civilization older than the Mayans, it’s the olmecas/ olmecas and the Incas that are the oldest civilizations of the Americas it can be researched. Corn 🌽, cacao originated in Mexico not Guatemala look it up, international agriculture engineers have confirmed it. The olmecas were the first civilization to discover cacao chocolate and domesticated it they invented drinks and influenced the indigenous tribes of Mexico and the Mayas introduced the cacao to the tribes of Central America, look it up it’s confirmed, you learn this in middle school. Mexico is part of North America, Mexican culture is unlike any other. The countries in Central American are not similar each has their own culture. Based on your comment it’s obvious your Guatemalan or Central American.
@@krono5el fun fact, the Aztecs have existed for thousands of years and changed their names a few times and were nomads that traveled throughout North America and ended up settling in central Mexico over 9 thousand years ago.
@@krono5el the first people that discovered the Americas arrived by following the mammoths 🦣from Asia they settled in what is the territory of Mexico due to the territory having the best climate in North America at the time, experts theory is that groups of people from Asia kept coming to the Americas and spread throughout and became different tribes. There was little civilizations that existed before the olmecas and Incas. 1 to 2 years ago there was a important discovery in a cave in Colombia that is older than the Inca civilization and it proves how people immigrated from North America to South America and witnessed other tribes. Due to the Mayan train construction in southern Mexico, Mexicans are finding a lot of important artifacts that we are going to learn more about the olmecas/ olmecs and their ancestors 😉 and old history of the Americas.
@@irisfigueroa5249 southern mexico is guatemala and vice versa, they were the same place and people before the names and borders given by the europeans. Central Americans were all people of corn and cacao. its obvious when the corn found in central america is older than the sites at vera cruz. civilization was happening everywhere and sharing. guatemala just means jungle anyway.

I suggest Learning actual European history if you’re going to attempt speak upon it.

we almost have similar cuisines from the philippines.i always love watching your videos sonny. show us more of latin america's foods and cultures.
Many tease on us because they were under the rule of Spain for sometime that why people form the Philippines are sometime confused with Mexican because of the skin color
@@mr.talentedcake423 can confirm, I can't tell you how many Filipinos i've encountered that I mistaken as Mexicans and vice versa.
No you guys don't.
This video is so incredible. Feel shy at same time for not being able to produce such content though from the same place itself and feeling proud on the other way for having this uniqueness in doing things 😅

Me too lol
So yum and fun! I have to say educational too! So awesome
I am still amazed how their cuisine are similar here in the Philippines. Even the use of the drum for cooking, we still use that in the province😅
It’s definitely because of Spanish colonization
Because I think Philippines was conquered by Spain.
Because of the countries history and the people who used to rule them
Must be the Colonial connection
Not really. Lol

Sonny is a good man 👍 thanks for the great content
The way the GrandMa has been watching the girl tell something about culture!! So sweet😂😂
the look on the dudes face when he's squishing the paste is priceless!😂
I found this site around 3 weeks ago and have been watching back to back episodes, facinating, educational and fun, thank you for posting. 👍👍👍👍
In my opinion the best immigrants are Italian or Mexican and thats all
🤔They snatching your people up, hide your kids, hide your wife🤔
Mexicos full name is “United Mexican States” so they call themselves Mexicans
Americas full name is “United States of America” so they call themselves Americans. BUT continent wise we see ourselves as North Americans, and the people down south across central America are called South Americans.
Therefore you have no right to tell him he’s incorrect when there are literal professionals that agree with how he views the world.
I love seeing south america, hope i get to visit one day
As a very proud Young Mexican women With ancestors of different regions/ states of Mexico and with professional family members that are chefs, I would like to mention that the Mayan culture is very diverse, the Mayans in Mexico are very different among themselves, Mayans are separated into different sub Mayan groups, each Mayan sub groups have very different gastronomes ( different ways of cooking and invented different recipes) traditions and speak very different Mayan languages.
Amazing video with kind amazing people
