    1911s are fun if you are into engineer and machining. They are similar to engine building. Owned a Les Baer, a Dan Wesson, Colts, Rock Island Armory, Norinco. All have a similar base of engineering but different fits and functions.

    Outstanding process presentation. That is 40-50% of a build. The remaining 50-60% is the fitting, filing and fitting knowledge required to actually mold the metal parts and then understand the function checks required to make a safe fully functional pistol. Then comes the polish and finish work. 10s to 100s of hours in all from start to finish.

    In your other vid about 1911 tools you mentioned the locking lug peening thing--I have a Sa EMP 4 that the slide lugs were "edging" up--fixed that and in the Kuhnhausen book it said the lugs on the barrel should have the edges slightly beveled--which I did some---no more peening....

    I'm working on a kit for my school at the moment. One problem I am having thus far is the hammer won't fall when I pull the trigger with the thumb safety and grip safety installed, along with the rest of the fire control group and mainspring housing installed. I've filed down both the grip safety and thumb safety where the instructions said to do so. Without the thumb safety installed, the hammer will cock and fall with the trigger pull, but not after I install the thumb safety. The grip safety seems to become stuck when I test the hammer movement with the thumb safety installed. I don't know if I need to file the grip safety more, pull the grip safety tine on the sear spring back more, or both. Any feedback?

    Brownells: I had a Ruger SR1911 full size that had a ridiculously stiff recoil spring, I assume to aid in feeding. My wife had difficulty racking it. I considered reducing the weight of that spring but read that it could beat the frame up and shorten it's life. Is there a lighter spring or a recommended weight that you'd recommend? Great video!

  • @nathanbutler8240

    what about fitting the slide stop? im having a problem to fail to feed. 7 round mag pushes the round over and stops to slide if i pull the mag out it send the slide home on that round so im guessing either mag spring or slide stop.

    lapping a slide and frame is improper even though it's common. the lapping compound embeds in the steel and will never stop lapping the parts. this means it'll never stop loosening. even if you use a 'non embedding' compound it is lazy and will result in a looser fit and will be less reliable and accurate.

    Or you could just buy a Sig Emperor Scorpion, which if you are going to buy a 1911 is probably the best bang for buck 1911 made, and you don't even need to screw with tuning an extractor. HOWEVER, for anyone that doesn't want to pay between $2000 and $4000 for a STI pattern 2011, this is all very useful info.

  • @lane8376
    @lane8376 3 года назад

    He said maybe stay away from using a compensator at an indoor range to make people around you happy. #1. If you go to a range indoor/outdoor you should expect to hear LOUD noises. #2. Not to be rude but I wouldn’t go to a range and worry if people around me are happy or not. I would go to a range to practice and not worry about pleasing EVERYONE ELSE.

    Seems like over advertising is taking place here. From you want this book to that book, you want this tool cause you probably suck at filing.
    Nope you do not need either of those. You need patience, rail cutting jig (this can be done with hand filing like the Colt company did back in the day) and if you think you need the precise measurements to ensure the gun is 100% within spec then you need to simply google the 1911 blueprints.
    Yes it can require a lot of work and is a test in patience.
