Apologies

  • I tried a different format today. A chatty, free-form vlog where I just kind of rambled about this train of thought I had. I feel kind of weird about it because I realize I rambled, repeated myself a lot and it's not very cohesive. I decided to upload it anyway because if nothing else, this nature park along the Florida Intracoastal Waterway is full of beautiful wildlife, plants, and sights, and that's worth sharing :)
What do you think about apology videos, 'cancel culture' and famous people? Let me know in the comments!

All of us make mistakes, and, in a lifetime, there’s going to be a number of them. I wouldn’t want to be judged only by my worst moments in my life.
It’s interesting to hear about how you felt when a fan was star struck by you. I’ll add that we can think that we know celebrities because we see them on our screens so often, and there are articles in the media to read about them. However, the only people we really know are our closest friends.
Thanks for making this video. ^_^

Nowadays people get judged and buried even without an actual crime, innocent until proven guilty doesn't exist anymore in many cases. Also, I'm not sure that doing anythung wrong cancels all the good things a person does, I mean we used to have a criminal system to handle the punishment. If this was a rule then we wouldn't have any history as I'm sure everyone did something at some point that was, is or will be questionable at some point in time. Wiping off all achievements for this reason is shortsighted and diminishes our chances for the future as we'll not be able to learn good and bad because we won't have any previous history that has been validated by everyone. If you don't like someone don't support them, sure, but denying everything they do would be just like denying every initiative of a political party because you don't like them.
If we learned that da Vinci was a serial killer would we tear up the Mona Lisa? If we discover the inventor of antibiotics was a pedophile we burn all the research and stop using them? Because Stalin, or Hitler were crazy dictators that are responsible for deaths of millions should we destroy any evidence about those decades societies and economics, god forbid they also had good initiatives that could help us now? Cmon. Let the legal system handle the criminals, other than that I think it's often the power of hysteria. It doesn't even have to be a really bad person. It's not very hard nowadays to find a few hundred people to push an agenda on social media - they formulate some oversimplified version that serves the ideology, start retweeting each other, it's picked up as a trend and others that don't even know the actual truth start promoting it because it sounds good, then companies react because they're afraid to be left out or see it as an opportunity for marketing and start posting themselves every one trying to outdo the other, then all kinds of celebs join in the same etc. This can even be hacked, nowadays even politicians use the same methods. It doesn't have to be the truth, if it sounds good and formulates a widespread enough philosophy, it can get support and spread like a virus. Few days later mainstream media already has a story and presents it as facts.
It's not as much about whether people do bad things, or even do things that are judged as bad by a group of people, I think it's more about us not being able to handle social media. When it was a gossip between neighbours it could only create a bit of disruption on that street or in the village, but now the entire planet is a small village in this sense, and everyone can find their own bubble even if they have quite extreme views.

I agree! The world really is like a village and we've never been so connected yet so anonymous before and that makes it so much easier for people to get swept up in the herd mentality.
You bring up some great points about those prominent figures in history as well. Even though it's not likely for them to have been serial killers or the like, surely they all had some questionable actions in their lifetime as most humans do. It would definitely seem wrong to destroy all of their work over that.

Very thoughtful and well nuanced video! I agree with a lot of what you said, but I also can't help thinking about certain men who were "cancelled" i.e., Matt Lauer, Harvey Weinstein, Mario Batali, and CK Lewis. All four men were condemned to varying degrees (Weinstein obviously most of all) due to harassing and sexually assaulting women. In my opinion, none of them should ever come back into the public sphere. But based on what you're saying, maybe I'm being too harsh? It's interesting to me that there are many, many women who still want Matt Lauer to come back to the Today show. Again, I personally think his television career should be "permanently cancelled" but maybe I'm part of the problem of cancel culture.

Oh no, you're not part of the problem, I completely agree with you that in cases of malicious and harmful behavior such as what you are describing, those people should be taken out of their positions and 'cancelled' for sure. The stuff I was referring to in the video was about non-malicious dumb mistakes, so I had added the text note at 3:24.
I realize I kind of rambled in the video so I didn't make myself very clear ㅠㅠ
