  • It's normal to feel inadequate sometimes. When it happens all the time, it may be a case of imposter syndrome.
So many people experience it and you can take comfort in the fact that it is possible to overcome!
You deserve happiness, and you are not the impostor your mind may be making you out to be.
Fun fact I learned while making this video, impostor can be spelled imposter or impostor, both are correct although impostor is the more common spelling. The more you know!

I'm really liking these new videos you're putting out lately. I also had a lot of impostor syndrome until the end of 2016, when I won a RUclips contest in LA with a group of other up and coming channels. The prize was a week long training course together, and a gift card. Some of the other people had channels that were way larger than me at the time, and others smaller. But no matter the size many of them also felt the same way about feeling inadequate and feeling like they were just "faking" a lot of what they did. That really shocked me at the time because I assumed that people who were making their careers all on RUclips would feel like they're at least heading in the right direction. Many of them were in their 20s or 30s, but some were even twice my age. I realized a lot of other people are also just kind of winging things or "faking" a bit or feeling like they don't know what they're doing, and that it's okay. So I felt a little bit less guilty about myself after that week. I still suck though sometimes, but at least I don't have to feel like I'm the only one.

It is a myth that imposter syndrome primarily impacts women. It is just as common in men, though men are less likely to talk about it.

This really resonates with me. I used to work as a cashier and suddenly I was promoted to a software engineer without any education except skills I've built upon over time. Almost everyday I would get these anxieties but I realize it's just in my head and everyone isn't out to get me 😅

In addition to all your other accomplishments, you are a great teacher - I loved your TTMIK teaching videos, and I hope you make more. They help me learn, they inspire me, and they are fun to watch - they make me happy!
You are outstanding in more ways that you even know.

thanks for your insight Cassie. I've never heard of the imposter syndrome until now, and this also applies to me. Every time I got compliments about my writing, I downplayed my strength because my major was economics. Yes, economics is quite different from writing because you play with numbers and models, but it is wrong to think they are completely unrelated. I guess right now I am going through the phase of reassessment and relearning.

I have had issues with this in the past too. But I didn’t realise it until watching this video. Thanks for putting things in perspective, sometimes all it takes is hearing it from someone else, knowing that they do it too. Great video 😃

Wow. Another very poignant message. Thanks for pointing these symptoms out. Most people will fall prey and succumb to perfectionism and eventually to "imposter syndrome" as you've found out. The project you've always wanted to get started, the business you've always dreamed of launching, the person you've always wanted to ask out. We don't get to doing them because everything isn't aligned perfectly for you to pull the trigger.
At the end of the day, life is so short, you just have to go out and take that first step of faith with an inferior (in your mind) and let the world make its judgment. Chances are they will think its brilliant 🙂

I was told I have imposter syndrome by my supervisor, now that you explain how you feel about it, I understand what it means. I've always seen it as a motivator, like " I have an image of who I am and who I need to be, and anyone who told me otherwise didn't understand who I am. Thank you. I doubt I will ever lose that feeling but I your tips with definitely help.

yes, this video is helpful to me showing I'm not alone on my way quite similar to yours. This motivates me and really gives me for third time a really warming feeling for the whole week and longer. First time it was the video with your violin progress. one year later now I am on the same point as you were, on the end of Suzuki 2 and I am 50. I thank you very, very much for sharing your experience! What are you playing by now?

You look too deep into it, there is no need to. Just do well what you have to do, and don't worry about what anyone says. People say a lot of things for obscure reasons, you don't have to be a mind reader. If you're good enough, say thanks and move on. If there's a problem, deal with it.

A friend of mine is a very successfui guitar teacher. He had a PRS Custom in his living room, I picked it up and played fast as I usually do, ripping around the neck. Didn't like it. I look at him and his jaw is wide open. "What?" I ask. He explained how people picked the guitar up with reverence and played slow notes on it, admiring it's sustain. I said "What they are missing is that I'm the artist, not the guitar!" He's well into zen and couldn't flaw that theory.
Life is not a rehearsal, so you have to make no excuses, you are who you are and you are No.1 in the world at being you. So go do it with wanton abandon! :o)
