- Today we look at incorrect areas many people direct their eyes during sparring/fight. Then I share with you my preferred area of focus and why this works. Having stellar focus on your opponent is essential and this is something you should be learning on day 1 in the gym.

A tip my instructors told me to do to improve eyesight is stand in front of the shower head and let the water hit your chest and the water droplets will constantly hit your eyes or around causing you to blink but you have to try not to. A video on your techniques Gabriel would be amazing !

Yeah. It sounds like training your eyes to ignore it's own tendencies to blink so you won't blink when a fist comes at you and your chances of moving out the way goes up. I'll try that today

I have learned this many years ago when I learned fencing (saber) that since the hands are faster than the eye, don't be looking at it. This was reaffirmed when I was in the army reserves that the peripheral vision is better at picking up movement than straight on vision. In the army, they thought us that in the field (like a forest) that if we are looking for the enemy don't look straight at the area where we think they are, but to look to the side of it in order to pick up on any movement.
Here is a more scientific explanation why what Gabriel said is on-point (not my quote):
"Our peripheral vision is fed by "Rod Cells" in the eye. These cells are packed on the outer edges of the fovea (the center of your eye) and are therefore pick up information from the environment that is not directly being looked at (peripheral visual space). Your direct vision is supplied by "Cone Cells" in the eye, which are densely packed within the fovea. These cells are sensitive to colors and fine details (since they are so closely packed). [Hold your arm outstretched and give a "thumbs up", your thumb-nail at this distance is approximately the amount of visual space that the cone-cells are able to make fine discriminations]
Unlike the fine-discriminating cone-cells, the rod-cells are attuned to MOVEMENT in the periphery, and are not reliant on bright-light situations. This is why, you tend to notice movement in your periphery very well. Heck, this is a great evolutionary advantage to be keenly aware of movement in your non-immediate visual space."

This channel is a Gem. These basics must be taught at the beginning, but many instructors overlook these things. It would be helpful if you could make a video on how to overcome the nervousness before getting into the ring. It is not fear of getting hit, but something else that comes from the ring, the lights, the eyes of the spectators etc. These things causes distraction. I hope you understand what I meant to say. Thanks.

Wow I was told to look from eyes to shoulders because you can see track body movement & positioning more. Definitely taking this into accout and would love more eye sight videos.
The best way is to look at their center line you can track everything and there’s one thing everyone have in common is when you punch you come forward and you can actually judge better your distance

Interesting that this approach taken by so many elite strikers is the same - and is very much in accordance with the Sports Science concept of the "Quiet Eye", though no combat sports coaches that I have seen specifically use that term.

Good brief video,i must be crazy or something but i noticed in highlights reels that roy jones jr stared at the chest area,like his gaze is somewhat fixed so before you mentioned where to stare i had roy jones in mind you have to look at your opponet as a whole and react acordingly....i would love to see a video of your eating and workout habits beacuse that is one good looking mane

The peripheral vision is awesome tip. It's just like how you stare at one point and see that fly moving around rather than follow it actively.
I usually rest my eye level under the opponent’s Chin area and pay attention to the peripheral I’m usually looking for my opening more then worrying about what he gonna do….paying attention to distance,height, reaches and looking for any patterns in his movement,pace, or combos that I can use so far works for me 17 yrs old Muay Thai. But like anything practice practice practice to build muscle memory and always working be open minded

Usually I always look at the chest but when it spar. Smaller people looking at there chest is a little hard because I either end up just looking at. The top of there heads or where there eye line is.

It would be really great if you could make that follow up video about eyesight and tracking! I really get a lot of value from your videos. I'm finding that most of the high level explanations are great, but leave me unable to track footwork in sparring a lot of the time. Is there a way to track fists, legs, and feet or is that too much to take in during a sparring session or fight? An example is that I can't tell the difference between a hook and an uppercut until the shoulders or hips give it away. Is this expected or am I slow or lazy at something?
Sounds like your taking to much in you should rest your eyesight comfortable to you the reason there no set set spot is because it changes with the height of your opponent as long as you can see there Chin, shoulders, hip, and knees that’s the spot you should rest the eyes it will be some part in the center…Pay more attention to the distance between you and him and know what your making available to him when your in that position for that second then think what you’ll you hit. It’s a guessing game but knowing what you make available in positions your in at the moment narrows it down a bit. Even more important is not to focus on what he’s going to do to you although your should be aware it’s to focus on the openings you have available on him and to use FIENTS not enough ppl use it.- this is what’s been working for me MT 17yrs old doing it for 4-5 years in my experience try it see if it works for you. My eye level most times is right under the opponent’s chin area and if ther really tall then it’s between the nipples on that little dent area ( sternum)
I don't like looking into someone's eyes anyway! On a serious note it's creepy and looking into someone's eyes is basically a window into their soul giving away your intentions to your opponent or vice versa and I don't feel like playing psychological games when I'm fighting! And yes it causes you to trip up and freeze allowing you to get knocked out! This video was very informative I never really thought about looking at the chest before I'm going to use that now when sparring thank you! Staring at the chest is a strategy that really does make good sense! On a slightly different subject where do you suggest holding your hands at for an all-around decent guard?

just like my Taekwondo coach teach us. the look can be use as a distraction for examples if you want to do body kick look to the head while fainting movements that's used to do in a head kick. than kick to the body. it works if you fast enough cus taekwondo is about speed

Speaking of kata, I have heard that the first movement in the Karate kata Kankudai - where the two hands draw a large circle as the eyes look to the front - has the purpose of training peripheral vision. Please do share other exercises to improve use of vision in martial arts/combat sports!
I knew you were supposed to match your hands to the edge of your vision when performing that move for correct technique, but I thought the move was only to train taking a deep centering breath, that's neat!
@@stanclark3992 Oh I’m pretty sure other kata would have something similar, for example Naihanchi where your torso faces the front while moving and attacking to the left and right. I’m no Karate expert so others would probably know more.
@@Cheeseisboss The name of the kata does give a clue. The kanji for Kankudai literally means “observing the greatness of emptiness” (or if you trace the terms to Buddhist concepts - “performing vipassanā/vipaśyanā on the mahā nature of śūnyatā”. I’ve always thought there are probably deeper meanings to this kata, but I’m no Karate expert so will have to defer to others to share more.

I think center of mass is important to focus on, center of mass doesn't lie and it allways shows those significant damaging punches and kicks which you have to avoid. It also shows when opponent is offbalance or lightfooded. This is why you don't want to take any chest tattoos as an fighter, because any tattoo on your body makes your body movement being tracked easier.
Even when you carry something, you allways want to know where center of mass is, object becomes lot easier to handle if you think just center, rotation of object doesn't take much energy, control COM.
There is exceptions for this, fat fighters are dangerous because you really can't see them move before its too late, if they does it technically correctly. You can see skinny person movement instanlty but belly fighters you can't see what they does, fat has delay.
I heard you can even react quicker to things in your peripheral than things you're focusing on
Hi gabriel I was wondering if you were still planning to critique subscriber sparring and fight footage.
i find that the reflexball helps tracking fast movements. my reflexes are definitely noticeably sharper since using a reflexball 5 times a week for 2x 3 min rounds or more. i once did a 30 min round straight before with it. man were my arms jello after that. ruclips.net/video/VrVtijfTXuY/видео.html 16oz gloves on helps with conditioning the shoulders. i also have 3 different balls to use that bounce differently. i got so good at hitting the ball even without gloves on that i can use it while on the treadmill forwards and backward

Haven't watched past 57 secs....for me, I like to watch the collar bone...leaves enough side-eye for everything to move...and always ignore the eyes sometimes they try to trick people.
