Always love listening to you guys discuss f1! it’s so insightful. and I definitely agree on the drs being kind of unfair, plus the size and weight of these cars these days is just too much. It makes those older circuits such a bore because of how tight the tracks are
Imagine a (near) full length rookie race in the reverse order of car. Hadjar starting 20th, Iwasa 13th for RBR? Bortoleto and Pourchaire from the front row in a Sauber. Only one car per team may disadvantage too many of the (not many in total) superlicense holders.
The cars of the current era are just too big for many of the "classic circuits" and a few of the newer ones as well. Canada, Monaco and more recently Baku are finding the limits of passing zones and enough room in corners to avoid a crash.
On friday I would skip p1 and let the reserve drivers young talent do a sprint race that would contribute to a few constructors points. Starting position based on standings in constructors. It would be a great start of the weekend and help younger drivers develop. Ofcourse you need three cars like the old days.
Hi, DC. Love this show, even with that mad Irishman. I think the cars have got to the stage now where they have outgrown a lot of the circuits, whilst has led to constant track limits penalties and crashes. In the case of Monaco, it has turned the event into a qualifying contest, and the race is just a low speed procession now not worthy of it's championship status. As a showpiece it's ok, but it's not a race anymore. As far as DRS is concerned, I agree that it should be banned. If you actually think about it DRS favours the driver that starts second on the grid, not the pole sitter. I know it was brought in to increase overtaking, but it's pure manipulation. I fear for F1 if this kind of stuff continues, and more and more street circuits find their way in to the calender.
I agree with all that you have said with the exception of Monaco. That race has always been a qualifying contest. In terms of width the cars were small in Courtard's and Schumi's era and it was still a boring procession. Personally I also hate the fragility of the tires, we were robbed in Baku, Charles and Oscar's fight should have gone on until the last corner of the last lap.
@@chitamule9040Good point. Monaco will always be a bit of an enigma because it's not really open to much development to increase the overtaking opportunities. Having said that, there has to come a point where every circuit will have the same problem if the cars continue to increase in weight & size. I was born & brought up 2 miles from Brands Hatch, and that iconic circuit was taken off the calender for the sole reason that the cars had outgrown it and the amount of improvements needed to continue staging F1 there were prohibitive, so the British GP was moved to Silverstone permanantly. The only real solution is to reduce the size of the cars. The weight of them will surely increase when the 50/50 ICE & Electric regulations kick in for 2026.
Love the banter, why the rush to wind up the episode DC? Would have really liked to expand the chat about the engines particularly. Would manufacturers desert F1 if green fuels and V8/V10/V12 engines were introduced?
The one second rule for DRS has a good reason. If you are quick enough to get within one second of the car ahead, you are essentially faster but passing is often impossible because you get blocked. DRS allows the car behind to pass a slower car in front of them with less fuss and much less risk.
Bring back either the gravel traps and grass right next to the track, or create a technical solution that has the exact same effect: if you cross the white line (or rather... leave the track), you will suffer, with immediate effect (in case of the technical solution by loss of power for an x-amount of time or something like that). Then you can automatically remove about a hundred pages of the rulebook, makes life easier and more fair. Drivers will complain, but they will absolutely manage. They manage around Monaco, where going off track means going into a wall, and they handle that just fine (most of the time). The cars need to be made smaller again, since a decent chunk of the issues with overtaking is that there's simply less and less space to do so in a corner. I understand why they are bigger to have to have space for the safety measures, but designers are creative: they will find a way to make things fit in a smaller package if those are the rules.
EJ has a very good point, bring back those V10's. The roar of those engines went through your body and the smell...that was way more better than the sound of the lawn mowers of these days...😅
I would give my left testy to hear and feel 20+ v10s in competition trim again. EJ said it best, the sound went through you, I was 10 when the last v10s came to Melbourne and I won't ever forget how much it made me smile.
The one change F1 needs is just go back to being a sport. Stop constantly trying to manipulate everything to achieve a desired result. Draw up some sensible technical & sporting regulations, enforce them fairly & consistently and go racing.
As long as there are governing bodies like fia (or fifa in soccer) there is corruption and things are being influenced. They want viewers and money thats all. 6 years of max domination like in 2023 doesn’t sit well in a Brit dominated sport. F1 almost died during 7 boring years of merc dominance. Also why I feel Lewis his stats are bloated.
@@bjrnchrstn I really don't think the dominant driver not being British is an issue at all. The dominant driver who was strongly favoured for a decade by the FIA was German, not British. And the technical changes made for 2021 (and one could argue 2017) were directed at disadvantaging Mercedes. They certainly did nothing to help Lewis. There is a long history of hostility between the FIA and Lewis, the idea that they would do anything to favour him is quite laughable to anyone who has followed F1 at all closely over the duration of his career. He is still the only driver ever to have been penalised (a hefty 25 seconds, applied post race) for 'leaving the track and gaining an advantage' after immediately letting the other car past again when he rejoined the track (never mind the fact he was forced off track by the other driver's lack of control in the wet conditions). That was Spa 2008, a blatant attempt to favour Ferrari in the drivers championship.
And that was of course all back when F1 was ruled by FIA president Max Mosley and commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone - both British. (Not to mention all the other key positions being held by other members of Bernie's Brabham old boys club - Charlie Whiting, Herbie Blache...) And the commercial rights have been under American owner ship for the past 8 years. (Before then they were under German ownership since being sold to Kirsch Media, but for most of that time were still controlled by Bernie.) During most of his time as FIA president Max Mosley was at war with most of the teams - generally Ferrari was on his side and his enemies happened to be the British teams. McLaren's $100m penalty had more to do with Max's personal dislike of Ron Dennis than any rules which were broken - Renault committed the same offence that year , found in posession of stolen McLaren data, and went unpunnished. Since 2010 the FIA presidents have been French (Jean Todt, ex-Ferrari) & Mohammed Ben Sulayem (Emirati), neither of whom have shown any reason to be favourable to British teams or drivers. (Both have/had ongoing arguments with Lewis in particular.) A large proportion of the British press are actively hostile to British sportsmen, and that's especially trye for F1. Likewise a very large proportion of British fans have always supported foreign drivers & teams, many also openly hostile to the current British star.
The hybrid/electric regulations applied to car manufacturers should never have been applicable to F1. Not only do they ruin the attractive sound of V8/10/12 F1 cars, the technology is eye wateringly expensive and adds too much weight. The sport has suffered and fans have been robbed of the full F1 experience, for utter nonsense "environmental" reasons. F1 is a business, more than it is a sport now. That is not ok.
Scrap the hybrid system and DRS. Reduce weight significantly. Make the races shorter. Remove mandatory tyre change. Add more point giving positions (Top 15).
Dear David. We want EJ to be allowed to explain his thoughts and elaborate on his opinion. People really do appreciate long podcasts, so don't try to cut off EJ in order to shorten the broadcast to the usual 25-ish minutes. Kinds regards, An F1 and FFS fan
I have mentioned it already some years ago.. In 2021 it seems that Lewis was not even expecting Max there since there was no DRS. Looks like a lot of drivers are not expecting the normal overtakes like in the WEC/GT racing. And I really hope the DRS would leave since its only about the number of overtakes and making it easier.
The worst part of the DRS rule is when one detection zone serves for 2 DRS activation points. So basically, they overtake because of the 30kph difference the DRS gives, and they get another DRS afterwards to break away from the car they just passed, leaving them with 0 chance to try and get back the position. That's just plain stupid and lazy rulemaking by the FIA.
Watching actually .. LISTENING to V10`s in Monaco was a very special thing. I was lucky enough to hear them a few times it was incredible the Amphitheatre ..the noise when sat at tabac was just incredible. as they (slightly) slowed down for Sainte-Dévote the noise off throttle was epic then scream up the hill. When Alonso done the demo run in his old Renault at one of the Asia tracks the whole paddock ..drivers Lewis etc all said THAT sound. This new generation of fans we now have need to hear and understand part of visiting a F1 race was the noise ..the energy ..l. Sustainable fuel could make this happen again ..everything crossed.
There are a lot of artificial regulation that have been brought into existence to cope with fundamental things, but assuming that each fundamental thing can be impacted by regulating another thing that potentially correlates with that first fundamental thing. Like a band aid, which doesn't solve the problem. Like DRS to cope with the airflow of overly complicated car's aerodynamics, like mandatory two-compound usage to "improve unpredictability", to regulating up to a tenth of a second how each tire compound must degrade each lap, endless modifications to Qualification format. However, every time such indirect regulation is attempted, it backfires somewhere else, and then that next thing becomes a headache for either a spectator, a team or a driver. Good example: remember how a one-shot Qualification was implemented because sponsors of slower teams weren't happy that the broadcast was focusing mostly on top-contenders? So in that format every car had its guaranteed broadcast slot? What happened then? The F1 realized that now fans then knew when to tune in to watch top-contenders, and didn't watch the rest of Qualification at all. Like, if they regulate minimal weight, they declare the minimal weight. They don't do that by, say, regulating how much and what materials can cars be made of. The same principle should be applied to other "artificial" regulations. And if everything is done correctly, we'd inevitably have a closer playing field, as there would be less loopholes in regulations.
Historical races seriously competing for wins would be very cool. They would have to stay within manufacture regulations at that time with some allowed upgrades.
Solutions need to be found that force drivers to drive at the top of their game. Now there is often a restrained racing. We need a system where drivers have to go flat out at all times and don't have to worry about tires or fuel or weight. There also need to be more races on tracks with a greater chance of rain. Each and every one of those are the most beautiful races
Eddie is fire-breathing!!! I like it. Honestly, if they want to continue with hybrid power, they need to improve the engineering so that they address reliable battery storage, because too many drivers are missing out on pace because of low power.
I totally agree with the GROWLER get rid of the DRS passing should be down to 1/ The talent of the driver 2/ The design of the car & 3/ The power of the car. NOT a button on the steering wheel
I hate the Sprints, and I hate that rookies don't get enough time in F1 cars, so the idea of making sprint races be rookies only really appeals to me. Make it a seperate championship even.
You said it. It's not sports car / endurance racing. It's funny we now have sprint racing. All of GP racing is spring. So the cars and rules should be built to reflect that. They need to loosen up the engine starting grid penalty rules. They can't convince me it's because of money. The R&D alone to meet current rules by far out weights popping a new engine in.
DRS favours the big teams, whenever a good car is at the back they can easely get back to the front using the DRS overtake. The art of defending your position is lost. When the front wing is the size of a garage door it's obviously difficult to be close to the car in front, make that front wing smaller!!!!!!
There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the idea of DRS. The top racing series should have a drag reduction system. The problem is deployment, there needs to be variable or a level of control from the drivers so that an offset might create, in effect, more even racing (e.g. limited time for usage across a race, don’t need to be 1 second behind)
IMO.... The number 1 issue with motorsports is the tracks don't have space for passing. It's not racing if no one is passing. Watching cars go around single file is boring AF.
Definitely agree with refueling. Like it used to be. Having to add a splash of fuel at a stop adds more strategy.... And like has happened in races where refueling is done, if the pit team makes a mistake and doesn't do the math right, you may run out of fuel during the race. Bring back the refueling!
For me the last truly great year in F1 was 2010. 5 different drivers leading throughout the year with 12 changes of championship lead, no DRS, no harvesting, minimal driver aids, three drivers with a chance of the title at the last race… During that season the powers that be had already decided to bring back certain driver aids for 2011 and we’ve been stuck with DRS ever since. Also, there are too many races in a season now. I only watch highlights for most races, esp all the Tilke circuits, and only concern myself with the great classic tracks like Spa, Silverstone, Monza, etc

Always love listening to you guys discuss f1! it’s so insightful. and I definitely agree on the drs being kind of unfair, plus the size and weight of these cars these days is just too much. It makes those older circuits such a bore because of how tight the tracks are
100% need to bring back Re-Fueling. It added so much to Strategy
So refreshing to hear! Don’t enlarge wheels to go faster. Don’t add weight and size to go faster.
Just watched an old battle between Mansell and Senna. No DRS.. you had to have skills to overtake.
I utterly hate DRS and i've been saying that since it was first introduced. It ruins racing and makes defending impossible. BAN DRS!
The cars of the current era are just too big for many of the "classic circuits" and a few of the newer ones as well. Canada, Monaco and more recently Baku are finding the limits of passing zones and enough room in corners to avoid a crash.
no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not the Chase format! That is what killed NASCAR!!!!
He knew not to even give EJ a space to speak in for that one just flew straight over it 😂
Great intro... GRRrr
And EJ dropping TRUTH BOMBS..
On friday I would skip p1 and let the reserve drivers young talent do a sprint race that would contribute to a few constructors points. Starting position based on standings in constructors. It would be a great start of the weekend and help younger drivers develop. Ofcourse you need three cars like the old days.
3 car teams. 3rd car new talent.
Who remembers when you had F1 cars and Formula 5000 cars raced together. High reving Cosworth against low reving V8 American Muscle
Fantastic episode.
Here's another suggestion.
Mandatory 2 stops & use whatever compounds you like with the weekend's allotted tyres for each team
Hilarious episode, thanks guys 🤣
I think making the cars 100 to 150 KG lighter will already solve A LOT problems
Love the banter, why the rush to wind up the episode DC? Would have really liked to expand the chat about the engines particularly. Would manufacturers desert F1 if green fuels and V8/V10/V12 engines were introduced?
The one second rule for DRS has a good reason. If you are quick enough to get within one second of the car ahead, you are essentially faster but passing is often impossible because you get blocked. DRS allows the car behind to pass a slower car in front of them with less fuss and much less risk.
A proper discussion about f1. Thank you guys for taking the time to share hour views!
Tyrechange under Redflag is okay, but that chnage should not count as a mandatory pitstop.
Would not have changed anything since it was a wet race
I just went to have a refresher of a F1 start with V10 engines......I had forgotten my experiences attending Silverstone. WOW EJ is so right.
I hope that synthetic fuel engines with no hybrid will be the way forward for an exciting F1 world
I would give my left testy to hear and feel 20+ v10s in competition trim again.
(Before then they were under German ownership since being sold to Kirsch Media, but for most of that time were still controlled by Bernie.)
During most of his time as FIA president Max Mosley was at war with most of the teams - generally Ferrari was on his side and his enemies happened to be the British teams.
(Both have/had ongoing arguments with Lewis in particular.)
A large proportion of the British press are actively hostile to British sportsmen, and that's especially trye for F1. Likewise a very large proportion of British fans have always supported foreign drivers & teams, many also openly hostile to the current British star.
Don't think we will ever get smaller cars, how do you make a smaller car with the same safety when crashing as a big car
3.26 EJ summarises perfectly every issue with F1. Every petrolhead stands and salutes!
Just electro motor and big loudspeakers with a sound track of a V10 😂
The first 31st seconds was sufficient for a full podcast gentlemen. Enough said.
DRS needs to go and bring back the V10's..the way they sound now I'll never attend another F1 race again.
Oh Eddie that edible looked lovely. 🤪
Dear David.
We want EJ to be allowed to explain his thoughts and elaborate on his opinion. People really do appreciate long podcasts, so don't try to cut off EJ in order to shorten the broadcast to the usual 25-ish minutes.
Kinds regards,
An F1 and FFS fan
What I'd give to lose the hybrid and have the v10 or v8s again 😭
Great show Mr. C
Eddie hit the nail on the head.
These cars are too heavy and to big.
I love the strong opinions of Eddie and also how calmly David handles that, hahaha this is a good quality podcast
Brilliant episode, lots of great points brought up,well done.
Really like the spin these 2 put on F1, refreshing change
Eddie unplugged is an animal.
But he always speaks the truth.
EJ is such an amazing personality and he just says it as it is. I love that he’s calling out the FIA for its agenda.
You pair have been the best thing about this season,Thank you and keep it up! Best wishes to you both.edit to add, V10 meh, go v12, 2 louder isn't it!
Love how ej calls it how it is. He speaks the mind of every f1 fan.
Grew up watching you D.C. You were my favourite driver
Definitely agree with refueling. Like it used to be. Having to add a splash of fuel at a stop adds more strategy.... And like has happened in races where refueling is done, if the pit team makes a mistake and doesn't do the math right, you may run out of fuel during the race. Bring back the refueling!
The clock should be stopped when a red flag is waved when qualifying !!!
That is already the rule
We would all love the engine sound back but I can c it getting even quieter heavier and wider.
This is magic chemistry, hilarious at times, informative always, very entertaining.
For me the last truly great year in F1 was 2010. 5 different drivers leading throughout the year with 12 changes of championship lead, no DRS, no harvesting, minimal driver aids, three drivers with a chance of the title at the last race…
During that season the powers that be had already decided to bring back certain driver aids for 2011 and we’ve been stuck with DRS ever since.
Also, there are too many races in a season now. I only watch highlights for most races, esp all the Tilke circuits, and only concern myself with the great classic tracks like Spa, Silverstone, Monza, etc
