      I think it was a cool way to include an easter egg referencing the original Jupiter 2 rather than an attempt at realism. If they wanted realism, there would likely be dozens of Jupiter ships, all with different families, and all launched from space. As it was in the Netflix series.

      Another Ebert inaccuracy. Themes and incidents from the orig. show are seeded all throughout this movie; the producer and writers definitely saw it and incorporated stuff form the best episodes. The runaway robot; the isolated ship they board; the "fake"/demolished Jupiter 2, etc. They claimed to have done so at press events, and it's obvious they did.

      I thought this movie wasn't too bad, either. I don't think it deserves the hate that it gets. The concept of Jupiter 1 being the exterior launch vehicle with Jupiter 2 "shedding" it was a clever way of showing a touchstone to the original. It's too bad Matt LeBlanc's career kind of petered out after Friends. This should have been his breakout role. Unfortunately, people just couldn't help but think of Joey when they watched it. :/

    The saucer shape of the J1/booster was deliberate, to prevent the Global Sedition from observing the true details of the J2, from which they could have learned key information and used it against the program (and/or: to speed development of their own ship to Alpha Prime -- remember, it's a race). The saucer shell also served as a layer of physical protection -- like standoff armor -- for the J2 as it was being built, and all the way up to orbit. The chemical rockets that get it up there were the decision of a committee, which selected the most-reliable way of doing the job -- one which did not needlessly disclose the capabilities of the J2's engines or the ship's performance to the Sedition's prying eyes. You've got to put the whole thing in its operational context to find out why they made the design decisions they did. Not all of this could be explained on film, but they all make sense given the backstory and the ultra-high stakes involved.

    Great movie. On my top 10 list of sci-fi space travel movies to watch. The one thing, but a small thing. How come they didn't tuck the Robinsons in cryo until after takeoff and breaking into orbit first just to make sure everything was running good. I am not gonna let anyone put me to sleep until we successfully break orbit. I'm just saying. Executing a slingshot maneuver through the sun to escape its gravity and get back on track was brilliant. Robots opening scene "destroy the Robinson, destroy the ship" would have made a great action theme ride at Universal or Disneyland.

    • @Raguleader
      @Raguleader 2 года назад +1

      It made more sense back in the 1960s when the show was made. The "family adventure" plot was still pretty popular. So later iterations of LiS get away with doing that because it'd be weird.

      Somehow, I doubt that. Though I will not deny that the Jupiter II is a memorable ship, this movie was clearly trying to update the show to fit the times, and the old ship would not have meshed with the very 90's aesthetic of the movie. I personally think that the fact they included it at all was a nice touch.

    Lost in Space... The only film where Heather Graham seems flat chested, due to the sheer magnitude of Mimi's magnificent mams.

    The bodysuits are ridiculous. The dialogue isn’t much better. The outdoor scenes are pleasing, though.
    How did Joey Tribbiani get into the mix? 🤣

    The eldest daughter should be lucky there is an attractive on this trip to procreate with. The next time, she sees a compatible human might be 30 years. The fact that the guy brought his family is selfish, cause he doomed them to zero socializing.

    I was really disappointed when the original Jupiter 2 didn’t stay in tact. Didn’t like the new ship.

      Artificial gravity means they can manipulate the gravity on the ship to counteract the g forces of the launch. If the launch reaches 5gs, and the artificial gravity can create -4g conditions, it'd be just like he was sitting on Earth at 1g.
