This movie was great for its time, back in 1998. The acting was great too, with a heavy-duty all-stars made up of William Hurt, Gary Oldman, Heather Graham, Mimi Rogers, etc. However, the audience did not seem to accept the portrayal of Dr. Smith as an evil being, as opposite to the original TV-series.

Though the model doesn't appear in this scene, I remember reading that they made a physical model of the Jupiter (2?) and then scanned it in. I guess at least that gives the benefit of being able to achieve more complex shots, but with the near-realism of a true physical model. CG does seem to look best when used to enhance something that is in the real word (i.e. tangible).

Ok, I mean I really do love sci-fi film, and films in general. I love set design, costume design, storylines, dialog, musical scores, actors and actresses, special effects.... you name it. I saw this on the 'big silver screen', in theatres I mean. This opening segment is a glimpse of one of the best promises for the futuristic precepts in scientific technology. Some naysayer commented that we won't really be ready at the aforementioned timeline for this conceptual space fighter vehicle to become a reality. I say if we stop wasting man hours, human resources, time consuming prejudices, energies evolving around war, greed and avarice, we could become a more cohesive, and united people. If we applied ourselves we could become extremely dynamic I say. How about that folks. It couldn't hurt. We should try to accelerate the physical sciences to better mank8nd and humanity as a whole. OK, I'll stop now....... Lol!

Very disconnected, what is going on with the camera and blocking at the end there, and a spaceship design of a glass bubble vs the interior being genetic mutants that look like they come from star trek? Just a ton of weird choices you immediately forget until you see the scene again years later.

Ty Nash. That is very true and agree with you. Were at that age in time where advancement had halted because we try to deal with the our problems the same way we have years ago. With war, greed, and power. I hear those lines in the beginning of the movie and I think to myself God I wish that would happen right now. Forget our differences and precede on to what we all crave. Advancement for a better world.
In today's world, there is absolutely no way we would achieve this kind of technology and advancement by the year 2058. Not even in 100 years. We are so narrow minded right now with our current world problems that's it's nearly impossible to be close to this sort of future. Although I do wish it would happen and eventually I do think it will, I have hope. But not in the next 50 years.

I think this was the movie that unseated Titanic from the number one spot, which it had held for (approximately) 44 months straight. Titanic had made the Gross National Product of France, too. Approximately.

what's going on with Lennie James' voice in this? He sounds like Tone Loc.

Yeah it's pretty weird as he sounds nothing like that in anything else I've seen him in.

Interesting opening.. It had my attention.. Then I saw the rest of the movie.. This and the spider attack scene are the only two tolerable on this lost cause movie..

The time line in this movie should really have been set in 2097 instead of 2058, to pay homage to the original series that had the story set in 1997. One hundred year difference, which really isn't enough time for these things to come true if this was in real life.
But what would have been really cool is that this movie's story should have been set in 1997, to honor the original series time line. Audiences would find that interesting because they would have been watching this in 1998 when the movie came out & just thinking that all this happened the year before. :)

Kind of like the 1st Terminator taking place in 1984 when it came out.

@@TheFacelessStoryMaker ... Yes, something like that. The only difference is that there was no Terminator television series a few decades earlier (in real life). I know some people did not like the Lost In Space movie, but I was fine with it. It was not able to sustain financially to continue with a sequel. At least they were able to make it when Matt LeBlanc was still young. He has white hair now, heh. I think it is time for another movie reboot, in 2025, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its television debut.

Really wish Matt Le Blanc did more action/scifi movies. I know he used to get criticized for his acting ability. He would do great against all the modern trash "actors" we now have to put up with.

3:15 - Fighter Pilot Jeb "Mo'gan" Walker be all like "You go on home now! You get to go home. I don't get to go home. I can't... I can't go home, not now, not ever. I'm not... I'm not... I'm not right."

Ahhh... The naivety of the 90s, thinking that humanity would abandon all their differences and save this planet. It's been a nice ride civilization. I hope this called "Life" is just a simulation and we could restart.
