    Starlings are 100% legal to have as pets in the US. They are a non-native, invasive species. Only the males learn to talk. If you want one, just tell local vets and rehabbers, and even exterminators who are often called to remove nests from gutters, siding, chimneys and other places. You want a baby not able to fly yet. They do very well on the cheapest dry dog food, soaked until it is like a sponge. Once they can feed themselves, you can give them dog food, bird seed, anything you eat for dinner (no chocolate), mealworns, bugs. They are very happy in cages, as they are quite lazy birds and as long as you give them plenty of attention, they will do well.

    • @mercedeslackey836
      @mercedeslackey836 8 лет назад +11

      +Root Cellar Oh cool, I did not know that! In most songbirds it's only the males that sing. I stand corrected! My starling eats the same rice and vegetable mixture I feed my parrots, plus the smallest dog food pellets, chopped peanuts, pine nuts and a daily helping of freeze-dried mealworms.

    • @mercedeslackey836
      @mercedeslackey836 8 лет назад +1

      +Root Cellar I get mine from Chubby. They supply all sorts of freeze dried bugs, takes the "yuck" out of feeding, plus that means you don't have the fuss of raising and keeping an eye on a box of live mealworms. I've got a 10% off code if you want to try them -- CHUBBY10

    • @mercedeslackey836
      @mercedeslackey836 8 лет назад +3

      +Root Cellar If you time it right, you can get that discount code plus free shipping. I get a pretty big bag (two pounds, I think), but it lasts a long time, about three or four months, though with more than one starling you might not last as long. I give Rod a big handful in the evening when the parrots get their treats, and by morning the worms are all gone and he's ready for his veg.

    So cute. It's interesting how their little throat puffs out when they try to speak. I don't know that I've every seen the throats of parrots puff out quite that much when they talk.
    The starling must live in a loving home if he has picked up such sweet phrases. I have heard of birds who will pick up nothing but swear words because that is all that is ever said around them. :(

I managed to release one but one had hit the concrete path on way down & he is a bit backward. He has since started to swear like a trouper!!. I recently obtobtained a baby starling. I couldn't let it die even though it's an invasive species so I decided to take care of it. I estimate he/she is only about two weeks old not flying but growing feathers. He/she is super sweet and climbs onto my lap for snuggles. Should I make plans to keep him since it's legal and hes so tame or should I continue with my plan to release? Also what age can they learn to mimic?

    I just love how some people are quick to judge and ask the question why do you have a wild bird in a cage. You obviously have no knowledge of these wonderful little birds who make wonderful pets and companions, i know, i have had my bird "Beaker" for 4 years now. He was rescued at my husbands place of employment as a baby who still wasnt able to fly and a crow was tormenting the poor thing. Many dont make it in the wild. In captivity they do fantastic, and bond with there owners like Beaker has with me. He doesnt have to fight for food or worry about larger birds killing him, he has plenty of room and gets to fly freely around my house when hes not sitting on my shoulder hanging out with me and talking to me. He gets the best food, treats when he wants...etc. Hes very entertaining and the hit of the party when friends and family come over. So people, do some reading up and watch videos of these great birds, sure to put a smile on your face. :)

    • @lauraprokes117
      @lauraprokes117 5 лет назад +2

      I agree :) Especially in the case of starlings and other wild birds since they are usually rescues who would have died without human intervention. Birds can be kept happy as pets, but it takes a lot of time, energy and in the case of the bigger parrots, money. more so than any dog or cat ive ever had. It also takes so, so much research to get it right. They are smarter than dogs, but without the wanting to please their owner attitude. It makes them a very time consuming, but rewarding pet to have.

      Maybe you will be able to see why people ask the question .
      They were not created for our entertainment .
      BTW if you have rescued him and he has no other support then it is a different thing .
      Legal or illegal is not the question here .

      @@Valleygirl66 Just rehydrate & don't feed to much. I can't see rehydrated dried food, if there are no additives would cause a problem if feed with other natural foods. My rescued Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is doing well on all the normal foods. He does curse a lot & his swearing & timing are spot on!

    Here's a question and I hope it doesn't come across as stupid or silly. Do birds (in general) in the wild, be it, a Starling, African Grey, Cockatoo, etc, do they speak human in the wild? Or is it us humans who teach these lovely creatures to speak human? I'm guessing it's our influence that makes them chatter human. Also, Is this good or bad for the birds- meaning: Would they be better flying around in the wild than stuck in a cage for the most part of a day. Thank you-

      Jennifer Jones Starlings are considered an invasive species so they are not released back into the wild by rehabilitation centers if they are found as chicks and are often killed. If they have a proper loving home as this one does its wonderful. They naturally mimic the sounds of other birds so thats why this one is mimicking people (because it relates to humans since it was raised by humans) by allowing them to chatter this way is engaging it in its natural behavior.

      Jennifer Jones We found our starling baby when he was only 3 days old and since they learn by mimicking, Sweetie does communicate with us in English. He has about 20 phrases so far and he knows when to use each one and what to expect in return ;-)

      Dai OrutisuTV Make sure you don't give them water, it can go down into their lungs. The moist food is enough water for them. cat food mixed with apple sauce, baby electrolytes, boiled egg and some water until it is oatmeal consistency works great.
