  • Narrowboat vs Train! With the River Churnet in flood, Colin takes a driver's cab train ride to Kingsley & Froghall on the Churnet Valley Railway.
It's too dangerous to take our narrowboat onto the flooded river so we pay a visit to Cheddleton Station where Jack shows Colin around the engine sheds, jumps aboard a steam locomotive, and checks out the restoration of some old carriages before warming up one of their diesel locomotives and going on a private ride, taking in the train driver's view, along the Churnet Valley Line to Kingsley & Froghall. We discover the history of the line, taking in Consall Station, the former Thomas Bolton Copper Works, and the station at Froghall.
Back on the Caldon Canal we leave Cheddleton and pay tribute to the great canal engineer, James Brindley, as we pass the spot where he became ill before his death in 1772.

Several years ago my nephew, along with a couple of other train enthusiasts, bought and restored a Class 37 diesel loco. After they bought her they did some research around the loco’s number and found that she was actually called the Lady Diana Spencer! Andrew wrote to Earl Spencer to ask if they could put a nameplate back on the loco when she was restored. Earl Spencer gave his permission and she was renamed at Crewe a couple of years ago. She is chartered out for special trips. Andrew started like Jack as a volunteer at Crewe railway museum and now has a great job working with heritage engines.

Oh my goodness! I’m all choked up! Trains and canals! All of a sudden, I’m four again...as a little girl, I lived between the Basingstoke Canal and the London to Southampton railway line. I was fascinated by both. I would sit and watch the steam trains race by and to this day, the sound of British trains are a lullaby to me! The smell was lovely too. It was a sad day when a high fence was built and the trains became electric. The canal was always very quiet as it needed to be dredged. My brother and I played on the old locks. The canal was dredged in the ‘80s and is now fully operational.
Sorry to ramble on. Your vlog was lovely, really lovely! The wildlife, scenery and that wonderful train ride. Thank you!

So lovely to hear your story. My dad and grandad both worked on that canal and railway. Ferrying cargo along canal to docks. Grandad wa secretary of local works club. My other grandad came from Ireland via Liverpool's dock yards to Croydon's docks to be engine stocker. They lived in railway cottages along railway. We could go to outback loo and watch trains at same time. Whole house rattled and shook even at night.

Brilliant vlog. Colin must be over the moon with his train experience, I know I would be. At 69 now, I still remember steam trains going past my house as a kid by about 100 yards. They used to bring coal to a local coal merchants along a branch line in Fife, Scotland before nasty Beeching got his hands on it. Love the canal stuff and history lessons. Stay safe.

Just loved that bit of history about Brindley and the poem on the screen. Such an irony that it was water itself that did him in! What a great man he was when you stop and think about what he did with his life and with waterworks, canals, and tunnels. He did more with his life than 10 average men, ya know? Also, that segment on the train was boss, Colin! Thanks! Love your vlogs and thanks to you and Mr Brindley, I get to experience the lovely English canals though very far away from the UK. “TRAIN!” Thank you for my own special episode! I say that because there were lots of coincidences to my life. I’ve worked in Leek, and been on the railway. I live near the Bridgewater Canal, my parents had a narrow boat on it, there is a theatre at Runcorn, that is right next to the canal, that my wife sold tickets for, I fished in when I was at school and my uncle drove those steam trains you saw being refurbished! See it’s virtually a film of my life! 😉😀 Stay safe.
