- Heath House is a beautiful mansion home to Jon and Flavia. The couple inherited the house in 2002 after John's mother passed. However, the couple are unable to keep on top of caring for the house and dream of selling it. Their son Ben wants to inherit the property and turn it into a business. Ruth Watson returns to the family a year after her last visit to see what’s changed. Has Ben taken over the mansion? Did his business fail? Did the couple sell it?

For anyone curious as to what has happened since this was filmed 13+ years ago: Ben and his brother inherited the house. Unfortunately their father passed away not long after the show was filmed and their mother just a few months later. The younger brother, Justin, ran it as a wedding and photography venue with his wife. No idea what Ben was doing. It seems that Covid was rough for them and the estate was sold in 2021 for over £6 million. After the estate was sold, the Phillips family auctioned off some of the art, silverware, books and furniture of the house in 2022. They had a very active Facebook page until the house was sold.
Imagine losing your ancestral family home after 15 generations… Unbelievable sad how it still happens. ;/
But the proces of emotional decay started in the generation before. The obvious lack of trust and vision and the general negative attitude were not exactly fair nor helpful.
Thank you for the update. Much appreciated. RIP Jon & Flavia.
Yup saw it on the facebook page.
That’s such a shame. Thanks for the information though
I didn't think that just the weddings commercial venue alone would uplift the revenues on the upkeep of the estate non plussed by John's unconscious wish to consider selling the house at modest prices.
The parents need to admit that they want the money from the sale and aren’t interested in keeping the home in the family. Ben is charming and has an endearing quality. He also appears to be quite determined. He’s the perfect person to manage the estate.
Absolutely, and I think it's actually wrong to sell an inherited home rather than pass it down to your spring , as the ancestors did to you!
@@krustycreme1093 They just didnt want to burden their sons thats all and they said as much!
They knew how much work the house had been for them! Geez
Agree. There's so much you could do with it. Photoshoots, Weddings, Air bnb , glamping, corporate clay pigeon shooting days, artists teaching weekends, yoga retreat weekends ....
Fuc that, sale and get the money. You have to be Mega rich to keep up with repairs on that house, let someone with the financial means take that project on.
@@derricklangford4725 You would be wrong! You must be a quitter
To have a house like this in the family, and a son willing to take on the challenge and to not let him is absolute madness.
I think the dad was the one bad at making the house a business but can't see his own flaws, only that there must be no potential. He seems to have a personality that's not easily challenged and takes it out on his son.
It is also very cruel!
Not really
read up further the kids ending up selling it anyway
It doesn't hurt to try
I would hate to be the one that has to sell a house after it was in the family for 14 generations! Wow!

Imagine owning a house and not even knowing how many bedrooms it has. Maaaad
😂😂😂
And he thinks the son is incompetent. Lived there his WHOLE LIFE and never counted.
That is so true. They don’t even know what they own, how can they possibly manage it.
Thats not an easy question with a home like this its not as cut and dry as our normy houses. So how many bedrooms originally how many rooms are actively acting as a bedroom where do you draw the line of whats a bedroom? You put a bed in a ballroom or a library does it make it a bedroom? If I walk into a 2000 square foot room with a staircase in it and no closet idc how many beds are in it to me its not a bedroom. Then you got areas that are servant quarters or mother in law suits where they have a bedroom and kitchen maybe even a living room area in that section so thats not a bedroom nor can the bedrooms in those areas really be counted as a bedroom.
Old money - folks have like thet .
Old guy lived there his whole life....no idea how many rooms😀
You would think that one rainy, he might have counted them. And thinking about putting it up for sale and no idea exactly how many rooms he is selling.
He's never counted. Yet thinks his son is too incompetent to inherit it.
@@OffGridInvestortypically how it goes
Exactly what a moron.
@@janedoe5229 It would seem there would be architectural designs, , archives, tax records or some other documents showing the size and number of rooms in the house.
They should also hire the estate out for filming movies and tv shows.
No money in that, believe me I’ve tried
@@WSMITHifywell, but it may be a good advertisement.
They have tried that....I think it was called "in the land of plenty".
Good idea
It already has been used in four movies.
Its nice pocket money but not a steady income.
The father needed to trust his son more. He has done well
Parent always c their kids r still kids
Both parents are dead and the business is still going
Ben's father is a mammalian failure.
No he was right The kids ended up inheriting the house and sold it for over 6 million
Parents still remember them as children but they need to adapt and raise adults.
Benjamin is a wonderful son! I hope he gets the credit he deserves.
Sure…but next time if he’s going to attend or meet and greet, he should wear a suit…looks more professional and he isn’t, than it doesn’t matter. 👍
At 42 he still doesn’t live on his own, I think his head is in the clouds
So sad, the dad passed summer, mum in December, 2021.
He gets credit for being a toff who can't manage an inherited property.
@@janinep97 oh no…. Sorry to hear that. 😮
Lovely guy Ben is. His father criticises him in a negative view. Hopeful he can gain confidence to carry on the good work.
It seems that the family problem goes back further to the Wife Flavia and the Dad’s Mother who managed the house into her death.
Flavia said it was part of her wedding vows she wanted to have nothing to do with the house.
It seems passed this attitude to her younger son. Who appears a silent saboteur “on Mum’s side.”
Ben is charming which adds to his new found role with hosting events. He is absolutely the right person for this and is well committed towards the business attached to Heath House. He has proved himself worthy of rising to such a challenge and going forward. Well done!
He's not going to marry you.
@davidoffon Really? Damn I wanted to watch the stable rebuild!
The other people have been charming as well, but if you watch the other shows, you'll notice that Ruth Watson is extremely rude and she makes very disgusting comments towards the clients (for example about the paintings of their ancestors) that really riles them up. She's behaving incredibly well and humbled on this episode for some reason (even in the tone of her voice). Maybe she feels intimidated.
Ben is charming how would you know are you sleeping 🛌 with him you clown 🤡

----Update----
I have checked and in 2021 the house was sold to new buyers and a few years after this was aired both parents passed away leaving it to their sons who tried to keep it afloat but eventually did not work out and then sold the property.
That’s a shame ,
😢😢😢
Yes, I was about to write this. Brother Justin and his wife (married in 2015) tried their hand at Heath House, but it was sold. Perhaps Covid was the nail in the coffin.
@@TomWatsonB1 sadly it would have been.
Maybe the new owners can keep it in their family for 14 generations
Surely there was a way to increase earnings from farm land, too. If he didn't know how many bedrooms were in the house, he likely never met with the farmers to ask how he could help.
Exactly. 600 acres and not a damn sheep in sight. I know in Australia we can only run 2 sheep an acre, they can run 22-24 in England. No idea of the amount of rooms although living there his whole life, probably never talked to farmers, and then somehow think THE SON is incompetent.
@@OffGridInvestorI guess this comment applied to Dad and Mom also, they ran the home in deficit for years prior to the filming.
Maybe have more owners
@OffGridInvestor when people say such things about others they are usually talking about themselves. Seems his father had a blind spot.
Fantastic Benjamin! You are so lovely despite obviously being battered down emotionally by an overbearing father. To finally stand up to him and prove him utterly wrong delights me no end
To Ben and Justin,
You did the best you could. Wishing you peace of mind. 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Turn it into a Bed and Breakfast. Serve meals like Miss Mary Bobo's in Lynchburg, TN. Have a horseback-led tours of the grounds. Host activities in the yard as if living in 1836. Partner up with some attraction in town near the home. Maybe have an annual car show like at the Marlborough House
And where will the money come from. To pay off the mortgage each month? After they pay off the heating bills that is.
Horses are extremely expensive to own; not at all a solution to a property already too expensive to own.
🥃 Jack was here.
Stables for others horses.
Yes business takes capital, but to have a family gem and heirloom of such historic significance and cut off your own children from the earning/ managing their legacy seems very cruel. Someone wrote they did sell it but at least for a higher amount then a lowball offer. And some strides were made in John learning to mature and be Fatherly to his adult son(s). Part of parenting is raising the adults and then letting go.
The old lady used to tell her son that he bullied Benjamin… how sad is that
What a delight to watch, enjoyed every second. Did not appreciate it being filmed over a decade ago and sad to hear John and Flavia have now passed.
Beautiful mansion & grounds. I hate to hear they ended up selling 13 yrs later, but hopefully the new owners will maintain it.
Yeah, True Ginger... If they can afford to buy it for 6 mil, they can afford to keep it up.. Prolly better than the aging couple could.
Staggeringly beautiful house and especially the grounds!
Little Ben was so hopeful and enthusiastic, he is so sweet.
Little? He is a 40 something old man.
Parents like this raise insecure children who lack confidence, then denigrate them to say, 'see you aren't good enough'. I'm glad Ben was able to have a go. John was incredibly rude to Ruth.
Gaslighting is very destructive.
@@elizabethash4720 I believe they're rigging it up for electricity in the near future.
This was a beautiful home and gardens. I hope whoever bought it, has respect for it, cares about it and loves this house keeping it a historical piece of beautiful architectual history. Its a truely amazing and has so much beauty and craftsmanship that so many homes lack today.
I love posh people and their stiff upper lip. Them: "Two strokes and a heart attack..it was terribly unfortunate". Me: I can't do anything today, I have a slightly sore throat.
Only the unrefined and poor use that word unironically
Imagine if your primary stressor in life was what to do with your inherited wealth.
Glad they kept it in the family.
They were going broke why do you think they needed to sell it
A gift or a curse? 😅
I think that they could have at least tried and as it progressed, met with large Hotel chains and collaborated, to turn it into a hotel, and high end dining, along with the wedding/ reception venues. They could have made deals, to each have a private suite for each son. The photography office/studio on site. Sometimes locals want to stay close rather than going on holiday abroad. Everyone's needs would have been met and the grand Home would have gone on for years to come. Dad seemed a likeable man and mum too, but ...
I'm glad that Jon and Flavia decided to allow their son to go forward with the house, as it is his birthright as it was Jon's, and his father's and his father's and so on. Hopefully Ben will marry some day and be able to pass the property on to his child.
It’s already up for sale 10 years after this show. Seems like he was waiting for his parents to die so he could inherit all the money
Not likely. The house was sold.
@@busterbiloxi3833 Thats a shame after so many generations.
@@kayleyholland5655very crude comment in my opinion. The sons would inherit either way, if the house was sold prior to parents passing or after, it’s called inheritance, whether in assets or liquid makes no difference. Dad inherited the house the same way as his son, I’m guessing the comment can apply to Dad too?
@@raymondgagne8363 no the parents would have sold it and used the money for their retirement leaving not as much for the son. Whereas if the son managed to get them to keep it, there would be no loss of money spent on the parents retirement
These incredible castle type estates you see here is something you would never see in Ontario.. the charm and vast history of these structures is so fascinating and only something you would see in a movie here. I can only think of one estate here like Heath house but it’s only 80 years old.. these estates are hundreds of years old ..
I would definitely give it to my son or daughter if they wanted to keep it going and in the family. This son is 42, not a child. I read this couple have passed away so my condolences. 🙏🏼
That's not true. There's Casa Loma and other places.
@@expo1706 Nothing as old as in England. Ontario is a baby in comparison. Casa Loma is only about 110 years old and came from "new" money and in a different social context than the old houses in England evolved out of. The owner of Casa Loma only lasted 10 years before it was seized for unpaid taxes.
on the market for 2 years and doesn't know how many bedrooms it has? no wonder he hasn't sold it yet
Buying a historic home of that calibre is prohibitive for most relatively well off folks-- not because of the purchase price, which can often be suspiciously reasonable, but because of the running costs. THAT'S where you get stung. And it explains why they so often leave private hands and get turned into hotels. How people are permitted to turn Grade-listed properties this gorgeous into modern hotels baffles me but a private owner with intentions to rejuvenate it as a private dwelling is watched like a hawk is one for the scholars.
Am binge watching these mansions stories!!! These are amazing stories
It is lovely to see a family break those negative family role projections that don’t serve to uplift each person, and to see everyone in the family benefit from the changes it has made.

805? Wow...
The parents died a decade ago and the sons sold it after the pandemic.
Benjamin is totally incapable and sold out.
A forty plus young man whose father has no confidence in his abilities and makes that clear is whats puling him down. Its obvious that the father never got the property to make itself pay by the letting it outfor weddings or weekend guests or shooting grounds, else his son would be handling it like apro.
I don't get "dad" telling son to do what he failed to do.
Too true!
Family interactions rarely make sense lol
Exactly
I think he undermined his sons ability
Both of the parents have died and the business is still going so atleast he did some good in the end!
So thrilled Ben could live his dream with a little help. Selling that gorgeous stately family home would have been such a terribly heart-breaking prospect.
Well done Benjamin. You can be proud of what you've achieved
Yet he sold it after the pandemic for £6.5M.
I think the father lost sight of the potential. Happened with my parents just being overwhelmed. This was at a time the travel industry was being overtaken by internet and apps. They were so lost. My family’s business had so degraded by the time of their death there was no option but to sell.
I believe the dad is not as arrogant and ignorant as he sounded at first, he needed some comfort from his son that the latter is capable of doing the business that Ben successfully managed to prove to his father. Bravo, Benjamin, well done 🙏🏻
Face it, the dad is a both a mammal and a failure.
He certainly was! The very reason he had two 40 something sons who couldn't form relationships is a pretty good indication
I'm dying to pressure wash the outside. It would be so pretty.
..... possibly take the protective patina from the outside of the stone, exfoliate and leave it wide open to corrosion and erosion. Seen it a million times, leave well alone. PS sorry I've just looked again, over-cleaning those façades would be a disaster, washing away its protection as well as its history.

I’m so sad at how these parents have so much disbelief in their own son and their family lines future in keeping this magnificent property in their family!! They have a spark of hope and they’d rather snuff it out than let it stay lit. However the parents didn’t seem to want the home bc they were always 50/50 prior to having move in. Go Ben go!!! Maybe they knew their son and his character better than we for 40 minutes on TV…

Thank you Hugh Bonneville for your great dialogues amongst some sorry stories. Bravo on your new career.
I feel so empathetic to Ben (also because that's my name), because I've been in the same boat. He is clearly ambitious and capable... but a life of your own parents telling you that you are a good for nothing and cannot pull it off takes away all your confidence and trust in your own abilities. I am so happy for Ben that he did manage to pull it off and gain his confidence back despite his father not ever having his back...
I’m so proud of the young man and I feel sure he will make it
Still sure? The house was sold by the sons, two wastrel laggards.
I believe the parents would be embarrassed if their son made a go of it and they couldn't.
It is sad that the parents would rather sell than give their son a chance to keep it in the family. Ben would make a real go of this and prove he was more than capable.

Oh! What sad News! I guess to split up the inheritance.... hum...
“He’s grown in confidence” no thanks to you, Father.
Such a shame that the father didn’t trust the son. The mother never wanted any involvement in the house, as evident also by her wedding vows. It’s such a shame as after this programme was aired the house has since been sold at over £6M, as being a successful events location.
Really ?
I think there is a reason why he has a concern. He knows his son more than we do. He’s 5th generation of being there & doesn’t know how many BR’s are there? You’re selling the property & don’t know how many BR’s there are? I’m glad the property was finally able to support itself, & not had to tear it down or anything like that. They have the right to sell & get return on the money they’ve invested over the yrs. They don’t owe their sons anything. They have gotten them to the age of majority. They’re done!
The father was aware of his son's, uh, embrace of the love that dares not speak its name.
It's a pity that these old manor homes are crumbling and being neglected because they are too expensive to heat and light. If the historical societies that are supposed to "protect' thiese homes would loosen the restrictions on certain things then it might save more houses. Discreet solar panels, or renovating to include geothermal heating, making sure the windows are triple glazed etc can all help off set the cost of heating the homes.
Sometimes you are to let the past die. The economic and social system that created those houses is gone.
I know what he means by saying Americans will like it. When I'm in England I love staying in the old houses. But to my surprise someone from another country has bought it and has nothing to tell me about the history or the history of the area. It would be very nice to stay somewhere like this.

From my viewpoint they did not have the moral right to deny their son of the inheritance. Both of them were old and should let their son have a go on the house like all the generations before. He also showed lot of passion and interest into doing something with the estate. I think both parents were selfish.
Agreed 👍 😊
It was wonderful to see the house was kept. Good wishes for Ben. I agree the stable house should be fixed up for more income.
I would love to visit this beautiful estate, if ever I have the opportunity. I wish them every success in their venture.
The idea that they would even sell off the asset is the mentality that is completely wrong with the UK. People value cash more than assets and then a generation later all the money is gone.
Unfortunately, I did some research. John Philips died in August 2011 and Flavia died a few months later in December of the same year. Heath House was sold and its contents were sold at auction by the Italian Art Society in April of 2022. I also ran into an online article that said Ben Philips mysteriously disappeared. Ben and his younger brother, Justin last owned the house. Justin and his wife, Sophie, were managing the business side of Heath House prior to its sale.
Where did you read that? I just googled it and it’s still with the Philips family.

I think the Fulford's could learn something from this family. True, the Fulford's need a lot of repairing, but I wonder if they could find some people who would want to help in the renovation for a chance to satay in their house. Mr. Fulford seems like a riot to spend some time with, but Mrs. Fulford would be difficult. As a faux painter and artist, I've worked for similar types, and it's tough when there's a person in the mix, making decisions, who can't reason well. Scaffolding would be one of the biggest issues for the Fulford mansion, and leaving people alone to do the work. I love that kind of work, it's not as enjoyable as painting a canvas, but it is satisfying. I'd love go to the Fulford's and spend a few months to renovate the entire place. They pay for the materials, and we work for food and experience. There would need to be a team of artists, a mason, wood workers, a few faux artists...I've done masonry, construction work, faux wood, faux marble ( both in the French and the Italian influence), sculpting, metal work, plumbing, heating (of course inspections would be necessary). The possibilities would be endless.
The father is the problem.....hes a total nightmare ! He wouldnt trust Ben but didnt realise himself how badly he failed himself and that anyone was going to do better.
Precisely. The father is the unworthy heir !!
Now Heath House is on the market for a cool 6.2 mil.

since this was filmed 13+ years ago: Ben and
his brother inherited the house. Unfortunately
their father passed away not long after the
show was filmed and their mother just a few
months later. The younger brother, Justin, ran
it as a wedding and photography venue with
his wife. No idea what Ben was doing. lt
seems that Covid was rough for them and the
estate was sold in 2021 for over £6 million
After the estate was sold, the Phillips family
auctioned off some of the art, silverware,
books and furniture of the house in 2022
They had a very active Facebook page until
the house was sold.
@@SirMrShanks what a shame. The estate was eternal, 6 million spends quickly
Captains often take the ship down with them as others are seen as less able .
Many people fantasize about living in a castle. The reality is that they are exceedly expensive and demand a lot of work to maintain. As an older person I couldn't imagine having to be responsible for it.
What a gorgeous property!
A treat for the eyes.
But you have to a substantial amount of money to maintain it, otherwise it's a nightmare 😊
The old lady managed before she passed. Why can’t the couple continue what she did. ?? I think it’s magnificent. Bed and Breakfast. Air B and B. Weddings. Put in a five star restaurant. Exclusive music venue. I am full of ideas.
Yes the old Lady managed bevor her passing. Very touching story that was too.
Love restoration...admire those who do it.
謝謝分享這麼好的視頻,很感動,為兒子的努力感到自豪。
With all those bedrooms,I think it would be great as a private school, maybe for exceptional ( Smart) students.
This was also my thought. A great place to raise and educate children
Would make a lovely wedding venue in the summer months. Potentially could be a lovely place for afternoon tea.
I'm madly in love with this manor. It's my favorite estate so far on this program.
So painful to watch when senior parents don’t see adult children grown able to manage a historical asset.
