Drones are not normally permitted to fly over, or close to, the Anderton Boat Lift. We were given prior permission to capture aerial footage after providing the Canal & River Trust with the appropriate proof of licensing, certification, and liability insurance.
Brilliant, professional video as ever guys. That wasn't a vlog, it was to the standards of a TV documentary and the camera work was just brilliant. Well, well done. Interesting fact for you - Back in the 1800s, Caissons were metal tanks that surrounded the supports of river bridges that were being built. They were lowered into the water and the water pumped out of them to allow men to work on the river/lake bed. To stop them filling up again, they were sealed at the top and kept pressurised by pumping in air to sufficient pressure to stop the water seeping back in; the workers entering and leaving through an airlock at the top. Staying in the pressurised environment all the working day led to the workers suffering decompression sickness when they came back to normal pressure, otherwise know as the bends. That was the first time that the bends had ever been observed and led, eventually, to the development of the decompression theory that divers still use to keep safe today. The original name of the condition was "Caissons Disease" and that is still occaisionally used when discussing decompression sickness. "The bends" was a nickname for the condition based on the literal bending double of sufferers when they were gripped by pain as the compressed gas they had absorbed came out of solution and spontaneously formed bubbles in the body when they returned to normal pressures too quickly. (All in one sudden drop in those days!) There you go, that's two minutes you'll never get back again :)
Love it when Colin gets all excited about engineering. It does amaze me that 100 years ago people could come up with concepts like this and it make them last through all this time.
Fantastic Colin. Back the days of quality terrestrial TV, this would have been a BBC production. You are pioneering the modern media which has left terrestrial far behind in both quality and interest. thank you!
You two are really good story tellers... The camera work, the transitions... You must have done the transition several times to get all the angles. Great video!
One of the best videos on the boat lift that I’ve seen. Your videos are not only informative, but also beautifully filmed from multiple vantage points. ❤️🦊💯
In another world you guys work in education and inspire kids to engage with history and appreciate how to blend the internet age with a slower pace of life......
Love, love, love this vlog. I'm so glad the CRT allowed the filming. They would be wise to pay you to use this as a promo video. Absolutely amazing. 👏 You Gents will hit 1 million subscribers before you know it. Happy to be along for the ride. Xoxo
Wonderful to watch. I am from Canada , we also have a lift lock. The Peterborough Lift Lock built in 1904, is a boat lift located on the Trent Canal in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and is Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway. For many years, the lock's dual lifts were the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world, raising boats 65 ft. Googel it to find out more. Keep up with the adventures guys, and always have fun.
Colin, we can tell that you worked really hard to get this video perfect. All the stress was worth it. You did an amazing job! Bravo!!! Thank you for all you do. You bring all of us great joy!
I'm fortunate in having grown up near the Erie canal in Western New York and watching the operation of this historic waterway and knowing some of the people responsible for its operation. Canals like ours and yours are historical reminders from a slower time and are a joy to walk along side or cruise and fish on their peaceful waters!
Another great vlog, very informative. Can you imagine how hard it was to build that 150 years ago, that sort of engineering is what made Britain Great.
Guys yet another great video!!! I have seen other RUclipsrs film their trip up and down the boat lift, but Colin your presentation of the information was grand. It is amazing that two chaps in a long narrow boat, can produce such high quality entertainment, week after week. It really shows how dedicated the two of you are to your craft. Bravo.
What a wonderful historic structure that is still in use today. Hats off to the CRT for maintaining and obviously taking a lot of pride in it, and allowing you to produce this vlog on the structure on short notice. Thanks!!
Hey Guys! This was absolutely brilliant! A truly professional production, especially with the drone footage! Colin, you have outdone yourself on this one! Thank you for showcasing this amazing engineering feat! Love & Hugs & a BIG cuddle for Otis! 💕🐶
I used to go past the Anderton Boat Lift many times when I was moored at Preston Brook Marina, in the 90's and am very jealous of you actually using it!!!
This is one of the best vlogs you two have done!! Thank you for all the time and effort that went into this vlog and taking us along on this amazing journey. You two are amazing and Otis too!
I don't know if RUclips has awards for individual vlogs but this one deserves one. What a fantastic 16 minutes of camera work, information and great mix of you fellas and CRT staff presenting it. I've seen a few vlogs of the working of the boat lift - the Naughty Lass passed through recently on the way to a dry dock on the Weaver - but this has set a new standard. Hard to believe it was all pulled together in 48 hours and full credit to everyone involved. As a regular dog walker around Anderton Nature reserve and the Flashes, I'm keeping everything crossed we get some views from the river in the coming week! Keep on doing what you do fellas.
Amazing place and amazing vlog - you've excelled your self Colin. - lots of very interesting facts. Poor Shaun misses out yet again hope you spent that time relaxing and not working.
This had to be the best thing to see. When you deliver a scoop you do it in spades. I'm not saying your other vlogs aren't great, but this with my fascination of engineering is a rush. Thank you for taking us on the journey.
I have learned so much about the waterways following you both! Really informative, entertaining, and beautiful footage. Thank you for continuing to put yourselves out there and sharing your adventures with all of us. Someday I hope to get to the UK and get to see these waterways in real time.
A brilliant commentary on the lift. It gives people a better appreciation of the genius behind these Victorian marvels. Your videos are fun and informative. Many thanks!
@@FoxesAfloat You two are very gracious and acknowledge your viewers; another reason for your success. Sadly, some vloggers do not, and just take the attention for granted.

I am sitting in Dallas (TX) close to retirement enjoying your videos and really looking forward to coming home to England and retiring on a narrow boat .. I love your videos!
That...was...AMAZING!! 😍 Colin, I am always (and increasingly) impressed with your "soundtrack" choices. Really, really beautiful touch. And how funny to remark that you are feeling so buzzed that Shaun couldn't get a word in edgewise--like there's ever been a problem with him talking over you (except in "Take 2")! Shaun--I see you. 😍
This is AMAZING work! I absolutely LOVE this glimpse of riverboat life in the UK! Thank you for this exceptional footage and amazing writing! And such a beautiful feat of engineering! Well done boys!
Colin, you are quite right. I have seen videos on this lift, but never one like yours. Thank you and thank you to the Canal and River Trust for allowing such access.
Great video again. Enjoy the wonderful Weaver. Thinking about you guys earlier, as we managed to grab the single piled mooring you like, below the mast on the Curly-Wurlys Near East Marton.
