When I first started using watercolors, I was definitely into the vibrant, non-granulating colors. However over the years, granulating watercolors completely stole my heart. I think there's something so special about granualtion being mostly unique to watercolors, and I love to celebrate that with my pigment and mixing choices. I do think that granulating pigments are generally/often more useful to landscape and wildlife painters than to floral and portrait painters, but they will always have a place on my palette :)

For me, it depends on what Im painting. I would never use granular paint for baby skin, flower petals, sky or water. But for anything else that has a ruff texture, I certainly would and do. Love it for landscape, animals or anything earthly.
I love mixing with granulating colors because of the separation. There is a wildness about it. You have to accept that you don’t have control over every aspect of the painting. It’s liberating.
Your loose floral painting came out beautifully! I love these paints; I took a watercolor class 20 years ago and these were the paints the teacher gave us. Last year I took them out and tried them and they still work and are still vibrant and gorgeous, and all of the paintings i did in class are still bright too with no color loss. I like granulation for landscapes.

I love granulation! I also love the separation when I mix colors that don’t have granulation with granulating colors because I feel like it gives it so much more interest.
I LOVE granulating paints. Yes, you have to continuously mix on the palette due to the separation in the paints. I just look at it as the price I have to pay to get that effect. I am a landscape artist, so I love the granulation for mountains, rocks, foliage, anything getting that landscape texture.
I love this floral aa lot! Btw, for those who paint using wet tube paint, MaimeriBlu is very sticky-gloopy from the tube, but it behaves perfectly when mixed with water. Drying it overnight in a palette definitely makes it more manageable.
Okay, so I don't have a singular go-to blue, per se. I have multiple blues that are my go-to for different uses. My go-to as an alternative for Prussian Blue (since PB 27 has a tendency to be fugitive) is Indanthrene (or Indanthrone, depending on the brand) Blue, PB 60. It's also my go-to for mixing my own Sap Green alternatives using either PY 150 (Nickel Azo Yellow) or, if I'm looking for an even moodier sap green, Daniel Smith's Quin Gold that includes PY 48. If I want a Green that's sort of Perylene Green-adjacent, I'll mix a Payne's Gray with PY 150. My go-to blue for water is usually French Ultramarine, and if I want a deep, dark water I'll add in a touch of PB 60. My go-to blue for skies is PB 35 Cerulean Blue. I just love the soft granulation in my skies, and I can mix some wonderful delicate grays with a (tiny) touch of Burnt Sienna or Indian Red. Perfect for those first clouds that roll in just ahead of a storm front.

Love what you are capable of with the flat brush, inspired me to head into my studio and give it a go. I LOVE MAIMBERIBLU!! They are different in that they are single pigment paints and give you a bit more control when laid down on paper. The Primary Red Magenta might please your senses a bit more if you really dilute it more towards the end of your swatch or drag your swatch out a bit longer. Same goes for most of them. If you are willing to try giving Maimeriblu another try, then here are the colors you might consider getting: Primary Blue Cyan, Ultramarine Light, Sandal Red, Sap Green (Warm), Cupric Green Phalo Light (Cool) Cadmium Yellow Lemon, (Cool) Transparent Yellow (Warm), Dragons Blood (this is a great cool fall color), Raw Umber.
The colors I don't use from Maimeriblu is the Yellow Ochre, which is opaque, and the Raw Sienna, which is underwhelming compared to just about every other raw sienna. I use Daler Rowney for those which are richer in color and transparent.

I wish that the propaganda about single pigment colors would be put to rest. We mix paints to achieve the specific shade/tone we desire. When we mix paints, we're no longer using single pigments. What's the issue with a manufacturer combining pigments to produce a lovely color when that's exactly what artists do anyway? I sincerely have NOT found that I end up with "muddy" colors when combining several multi-pigment paints, and I'm saying that as an artist who has been painting in wc for more than 30 years. I like the convenience of multi-pigment paints and the beautiful colors the manufacturers produce. It's kinda like the AWS thought police insisting you shouldn't use black when mixing colors. Look at old master paintings. They always used black to darken colors. It's all BS intended to control your creative process!
Meeee! I love granulation and color separation. When I first started using watercolor, I worked hard to try and achieve the soft bleeds and blends and found I was very bored...there was nothing interesting happening, everything was soft and undefined. Yes, I'm a texture gal and I love the blooms, cauliflowers and wonky lines of sketchy styles, probably why I like to paint on 90lb. I love the crunchy pages when the paint dries. I like cotton too but for serious pieces. That said, I think folks that like the soft bleeds don't like granulation because the pigment particles are large and heavy so their movement can be unpredictable.
MaimerinBlu has an excellent Potters Pink (PR233) which is low tint and granulating. You can add a bit of it to transparent colours and make them granulating. I use granulating colours where texture is reauired (buildings, beaches, walls, stones, mountains) It might not be needed fornflorals or more illustration like paintings. The key for me is to get to knownhow thenpaints behave, so I can take the best advantage of their properties.
I love granulating colors! I love the Schmincke Horadam Super Granulating colors. Van Gogh has a set of super granulators, and there's Daniel Smith Primateks and their granulating & color separating paints! Every brand seems to be coming out with their own "super" granulating paints.
Granulating paint granulates because of the properties of the listed 'P' code (pigment number). Unfortunately, not all manufacturers use the "G or N" for granulating or not on their tube label, as you've shown.
One thing I will say is you have to be very careful when you mix super granulating paint. If it's a single pigment paint, you won't have an issue unless you don't like the color. On the other hand, if there are two or more pigments in the paint, you'll have to be very careful what pigment you mix with it! It's a surprise every time unless you experiment and do mixing charts! Once you become familiar with pigments and how they behave, you'll find joy when painting with granulating pigments!

I think the colours are gorgeous but I agree that more greens would be great. It seems to me that most artists prefer a particular brand that suits them best. I’ve also seen you and others produce beautiful art with cheap paints. In the end, it doesn’t matter what you prefer as long as you’re happy with the results.
My go to blue is Pthalo. Jus have to be careful because it is staining.
My favorite blue is Daniel Smith Indanthrone Blue.

I really like the vibrancy of your painting. I do like MaiMeri Blu watercolour paint especially their Dragon’s Blood and their blues. The blues I love the most are Berlin Blue, Faience Blue and Cerulean Blue Sky not the Cerulean Blue. I only use granulating colours for texture and often just stand alone colours not much colour mixing. Any Cadmium Yellow Deep watercolour paint I have used has always been orangish so the colour you demonstrated is typical for the deep shade. I would be interested in a video discussing granulation. Thank you for sharing this video.
Beautiful florals! I have MaiMeri Blu paints but I don’t reach for them a lot. I haven’t decided why yet either. Their Potters Pink is my favorite of anyone’s Potters pink tho! Love it! I usually use Ultra Marine/Phthalo blue. I’m with you on greens, and for convenience color greens I like Daniel Smith but I have ordered me some QOR greens, been using QOR lately! I hope they work out good! My go to paints are usually Winsor Newton with Daniel Smith in my palette also! Only mixed palette I have! LOVE YOUR WORK! I swear you could paint with muddy water and I’d be in love with the results! The colors mentioned are just my likes. Everyone has their own choices and they are all amazing❤️ Who can look at a watercolor palette and be sad🙂 oh on granulated colors! I don’t own any strictly granulating! I could see them on a pear skin and landscapes/trees for me personally. I’m quite new to watercolor so imagination is limited on granulating paints😉 Happy painting🙂

Hi Emma. I just wanted to tell you I don’t care for the green gold either, but I found that the green gold mixed with Prussian blue it’s pretty nice!
Yes these colors are gorgeous but there not the most intense colors. When I get a primary red I'd like to be a dark red. Now dragon's blood from MyMariblu is a very dark red but it is more on the purple side. These paints are very pretty but the strength of the pigment is not there. I guess that's what I'm trying to say. I prefer my Daniel Smith. They have a green that is out of this world!!! It's very beautiful and very dark green and you can lighten it with just adding water or yellow. I don't have the name of this green in front of me but if you saw this green you'd love it!! I'll let you know the name at a later date. I think it's Appetite genuine green something like that??? Now that's a dark forest green. Grandulating colors I like for ground work or rocks and mountains. The textures give the feel of a rock or dirt like ground. Thank you Emma and have a great day! JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸.
I bought the set of 36 Maimeri Blu wc which came with a H-U-G-E!!! palette and instructions for where to place the paints in the palette. I followed the suggested layout, swatched the colors and stopped using them because the suggested layout didn't make sense (colors were not grouped like the color wheel), the curved layout of the palette made it hard to reach some colors, and the palette was SO big that it took up most of my desk and didn't leave room for my paper. Big waste of almost $200. Additionally, these paints reactivate easily into intense color. This might be a plus for some, but there was a learning curve for me to get the shade I intended after working for more than 30 years with standard wc.
The Maimeri paints languished unused on my shelf for more than 3 years before I bought a palette similar to the one you use. I decided to transfer the paints from the large palette to the new one. Maimeri paints contain honey and they were totally gummy making it very difficult to get the paints out of the old palette. Transferring the paints ended up being a 2 day process. I found I actually liked the paints and I now use them occasionally, but I came to the same conclusion you did - they didn't offer anything more than my Cottman, WN & Van Gogh paints did. They are certainly more expensive than Cottman and Van Gogh. Being a set, they contained colors I don't use and didn't have colors I like to use.
Would I recommend these paints? No! While the quality isn't bad, I find that for my purposes (illustrations that are scanned then reproduced digitallly), the Cottman, WN & Van Gogh work just as well. These brands are readily available. Cottman & Van Gogh are WAY cheaper and I like the colors just as well or better than Maimeri.
I think granulating colors gives so much interest in flowers, like a pixel image or impressionistic painting. Also, I believe the colors that were sent to you are a mix of their Introductory set, Jenna Rainey and Jeannie Dickson collaboration set, they added a couple of blues too.
I am enjoying experimenting with all colours as I am a beginner. I like the granulating colours that are two tone - anything to do with the night sky! I need to just enjoy swatching without the expectation to paint 'something'.

I’m brand new to watercolours and in December I decided to take the plunge and buy thirty MaiMeri Blu watercolour tubes. Like with fountain pen ink, I _LOVE_ the colour blue and had a hard time deciding between my favourites.
Today I was painting in some doodles I did previously (Pilot CH 92 pen w/Platinum Carbon Black ink) and mixed Quinacridone Rose and Cerulean Blue. While I loved the initial deep vibrant purple on my ceramic palette, when I put it on the cold press cotton paper (wet on dry), it definitely granulated. Because I was just essentially colouring in doodles I made with paint and doing it for fun, I really liked the effect that it made. However if I was trying to paint something that needed or that I wanted precision, then I’d be quite frustrated with the results.
I was like you for a long time. I didn't like granulation. I notice many floral artists don't like the granulation because of the subject. However, when I'm painting trees, wood, rocks, etc., granulation is amazing! Maimeri Blu was my first professional watercolors and my first love. They have many more vibrant colors in the line. I got them for the "luminous" landscapes of Sterling Edwards.
My go to blue is probably paynes gray. It's the one I use the most but I use cobalt, prussian, and indanthrone blue quite a bit depending on what I'm using them for. Cobalt for shadows and skies, Prussian for flowers or water or skies, and indanthrone for flowers. Paynes gray I use for shadows, skies, flowers, snow, grass, water, or to mix with other colors to subdue the brightness or make it darker or cooler.

Granulation comes in handy whenever you're painting things with texture like rocks, sand etc. It adds interest and paints scruture for you. I guess you won't have need for that with floral paintings, but it's awesome for certain things in landscape paintings.
My favorite blues are ultramarine blue for mixing purples, cobalt blue for skies, and Prussian blue for just blue or mixing greens. I find mixing Prussian blue with burnt umber makes a glorious dark green. Very very earthy green.

I absolutely love granulation. I use them all the time. I’m super big on texture in watercolors.. so gimme all the granulating and color separating colors, blooms, bleeds and salt! Granulating paints are fun to mix with other colors. You can get some really unique colors. If I had to choose just one blue.. French Ultramarine. But I like many others

I happen to love granulating colors… but that’s just me…cobalts are always granulating and of course ultramarines. I paint mostly landscapes and I love the texture of granulating colors. Thanks, Emma!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful information with us! I have got most of these same colors but not all of them. I don’t have the black or either of those gorgeous turquoise colors. I do have the sap green with the green gold for my greens in addition to being able to mix quite a bit of varieties of greens with the various yellows & blues that you have too. Greens are my favorite colors like you. I do like some granulated colors for making some textures for my landscape paintings. I always forget to re-stir my mixed colors that I make with any of my granulated blues or earth colors before putting them on the paper. I would love to see you do a video on granulation. I use MaimeriBlu professional watercolors mostly now in addition to the W&N, a few Daniel Smith & M Graham. 💕

Beautiful painting! I like their buttery feel and blend well. I agree their pigment isn’t as strong, but in my mixed brand pallets I go to them often. MB Green gold is one of my all time favorite colors. Thanks for trialing them, I’m always on the look out for the perfect red!

I have a friend who paints the most gorgeous landscapes with MaimeriBlu watercolors
I have a couple of maimeriblu colors (indigo & sap grn ) I got them as I ran out of Windsor Newton and thought I’d try something else. I really like them. They activate well whereas, depending on the color, Windsor Newton can take awhile to soften/activate and will chunk when dry (and this is the professional grade) The maimeriblu colors that I have are exactly what I’d expect those colors to be. I’d choose them again. I’ve always relied on W&N, but it’s nice to have other options that I would consider professional grade. BTW; Colbalt is my favorite blue❣️
I actually love granulating colors, and I use them often in portraits because I paint very loosely and I like seeing the colors separate on the skin and in the hair, which makes it more visually interesting to me. So I specifically love Cerulean and Ultramarine for those reasons as I use either of those for shadows as well as ambient light.

I like granulating in some situations, but not all. My favorite blue is Phthalo Blue Green Shade (which I believe is not granulating) and is my go to for most of my paintings.
Also like Winsor Newton Aqua Green... kind of Phthalo... 🎉
those are beautiful colors i have so many tubes i got the mission gold sets 4 times i also like the art whale tubes a great buy shinhan is another great paint,there are so many good brands i have fancy and cheapos got a few boxes of really bad paints ,it is so fun to make my own pallettes i love granulation ,

The mixing and separation is what makes painting with granulating watercolors so special. I now add granulating medium to most of my pieces because I've come to enjoy it so much. Embrace granulation Emma... embrace it! 😅
I really, really love granulating colours. The majority of my palettes are made up up of colours that granulate. I generally don’t tend to mix much, I like convenance colours but when I have you just have to keep moving the paint it when you put your brush back in. I love seeing the separation of colours on the palette and on the paper and how different amounts of water create a different amount of colour separation and the addition of so much texture!
I mainly paint intuitive abstract patterns rather than florals so maybe that makes a difference to your preferences.
Also I really didn’t like cerulean either. I had a Cotman one and it was so pants. However I got a Rosa gallery one and it’s much stronger and one of my most used up ones!

Granulation used to worry me, making me think I did something wrong. But now I love it. It's fun to see what the colors will do on the paper over time and with enough water to move around in. For me, the movement of the granulation is mesmerizing to watch as it dries. And once it's dried, it can add a lot of character and depth to a finished piece. I like to have a little mars black, PBk11, on my pallet.

I am newer in the watercolor world, I agree with you on not really being a fan of the granulating colors, for general use anyway. I do see where they could serve a purpose sometimes, though.
I added MaimeriBlu to my Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith and Kuretake collection about 8 months ago. It may be my imagination, but I find myself scrubbing the paints with my brush when I'm trying to load up on pigment to drop into flower petals, particularly the reds. I end up going to another brand to get the amount of pigment I need as a second coat. They are fun in their own way but not my first choice. BTW, I love granulating paints. MaimeriBlu's green gold is my favorite color. Sorry, Emma! Thanks for swatching. I found your opinion to be invaluable.
Lovely painting and a wonderful video! I was given a set of 6 of this brand from my niece when she went to Italy and they were warm n cool primaries. I was using mostly digital workflow and simply set them aside. I went back to paper n paints in 2015 and I dug these paints out and gave them a go. They were sticky out of the tube, I did better after they dried. I wanted to try more brands including the one I was taught from by my Gran, Grumbacher Finest and after sampling several more brands I got a good set of 36 mijello gold watercolor paints! I have since introduced to DaVinci Paints of California and they have just blown me away! They have taken over my studio and most of my palettes!! Denise Soden got me to try them out and they are simply the best professional grade paints at a reasonable price I have ever tried and I have been painting since 1971 ! I use granulating paints depending on what I am painting. I believe that they work best for landscape painting, yet I have seen some fantastic portraits too! I love the texture and sometimes even contrast that granulation brings to a piece. I tend to be a bit more abstract in my painting though, so it works for me... I can see how it can end up feeling not cohesive for some depending on its use. This floral is beautiful. I also just picked up a 5 tube set from MMB... I LOVE the green gold as well as the cobalt yellow deep. They are both really vibrant. In fact, MMB's green gold is one of my favorite versions of green gold.
All Cobalt pigments are granulating because it's difficult to grind the cobalt super fine. Same with Ultramarines. However Ultramarine can be ground pretty fine. Schmincke Ultramarine Finest is so fine, granulation is hardly noticeable. Same with M.Graham's Ultramarine Blue.They are the only two brands that hardly granulates at all. Another reddish blue option is a good Phthalocyanine Blue Red Shade like Schmincke Sapphire Blue or Daniel Smith's Phthalo Blue Red Shade. Winser & Newton Winser Blue red shade is pretty good too. But the warmest is from Schmincke or Daniel Smith.
I love your floral painting! You make it look so easy (and I know it's not) I'm not a big fan of granulation, but I just started painting a short time ago and don't even know what my style is yet. I think it's beautiful when used in landscapes though.

What great watercolour tip, putting tube colours to dry on a palette! Your floral paintings are gorgeous and vibrant . (BTW Winsor and Newton are my favourite go to watercolours also.)
This video has perfect timing as I was considering trying MaimeriBlu. My first paints were Windsor Newton Cotman and got a bit frustrated when I couldn’t get quite the intensity I wanted. Little bit of research and a few months later I had a decent palette of Daniel Smith. Then I started looking at other professional watercolors… I have gotten some Schmincke, a few Sennelier and even a Holbein. Recently acquired a few Roman Szmal and Michael Harding. I do see some differences from different brands however as long as they are artist grade they’re all good so far. Seems these fall into that same category.
As I am growing in my watercolor adventures I find myself gravitating toward more granulating colors. I love the texture they help create.
As for a favorite blue… I have two. Interestingly this is one situation where granulated colors are lower on my list. I love phthalo blue red shade as well as indanthrone blue. Both are so wonderfully intense in mass tone and the dilute color is quite beautiful and great for skies.
One recent addition to my collection is Schmincke’s Supergranulating Shire Blue and it has potential to become a favorite. It’s a fun cool tone blue-green that leans so green I have with the greens on my palette. Found it was perfect for the stem of the thistle I painted recently.

Love ❤️ granulation due to I’m a dark moody painter. I like more fantasy like dragons and other dark images. Granulation makes great backgrounds.

The thing that's unusual about Maimeri (at least these days) is that they changed their line so that none of their paints are mixes; they are all single pigment, which I think is very cool (even though I have hardly any of their paints). So for instance Payne's Grey is a mix in all other brands, but they use an Indigo dye for this one, which also happens to granulate, it's quite unusual. Of course people usually like Payne's for landscapes so I get that's not really your jam. I'm surprised they didn't include their potter's pink, which is one of their best paints. They really do a great job with it.
I know you weren't blown away by the Quin Red, but it's a bit low-tinting by nature. It's PR209, and is quite interesting because it mixes both bright oranges and purples. It's great if you wanted to mix everything from a primary trio, because almost no reds do that so well. It's so lovely combined with quin gold and quin rose -- it makes amazing coral and peach colors. And the green gold is fantastic for landscapes and fruit paintings. I used green gold (azo green PY129) and perelyne violet to paint black mission figs last year, and it was the absolute perfect combo. Also great for pears. PR209 and PY129 are not very appealing on their own, but are fantastic mixing colors!

Like you, I am not a fan of granulating pigments. I don't find them useful in botanical watercolor.

I love these paints. I think your review would be a bit different if you got to try more of the greens or other favorite colors of yours. I have gotten some of the most beautiful greens from mixing their greens and blues! But thanks for showing them.
I feel like this brand is creamier. I get better saturation when I really work the brush into the prewetted pallette. I use green gold into every green with my red florals because it just works. It's so warm its great for a little mix in. Some of them are definitely granulating but I love it. Those quiancridones are fun in loose smokey roses and if you do Prussian blue accents...well when I do it I'm happy. I mix and match everything though. I am not a purist.

I love granulating colors! I paint a lot of florals also but I love the texture granulating colors add to my watercolors. I love cerulean blue for sky’s. Ultramarine is probably my favorite. It’s definitely the one I use a lot. Your floral painting is very nice. These colors are pretty but they seem very weak to me. I would not buy them. ( but then I am used to Daniel Smith)😀
Granulating colors sre wonderful for landscapes and textures. Even clothing. Those are things you don’t paint too much ?
