Very good explanation of how to manage your water control. You’re one of the few artists who explains the effects of the brushes (types & size), paper (quality, cotton/pulp, cold-pressed/hot-pressed/rough) & the paint 🎨 consistency being part of the process & factor of water control. Also great examples for fixing the problem/issues for successful results. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful beginner tutorial for water control!
It's the first time I found such a clear explanation. You covered all the problems which can occur. I followed your suggestions and it made a huge difference. Thank you Emma.
Thank you so much for this explanation, Emma! I'm the type of student that NEEDS a technical explanation of HOW things work to be successful. Some trial and error is necessary, but TOO much can make it hard to understand exactly where things are going wrong and becomes frustrating. LOL.....now if I only new how much water to put in my paint! 😂
Thank you so much! I’ve been beating my brains out trying to figure out why I couldn’t get my flower petals to “explode” like all the videos I’d been watching. I am a newbie but still, not ONE person mentioned the paper! And of course, I’m using the Michael’s beginner pad!🤦🏼♀️ For the love of Lassie, no wonder!! Again,😊 Thank you so much!
I happened to watch your old video yesterday about how to work around more affordable student grade paper… and it took a huge burden off my newbie fustration. Once I learnt the importance of lifting before water pools, I started making much better progress! Then this tutorial today reinforces that learning. Buying good paper is too much a luxury at this point… so it helps to know how to troubleshoot. Thank you, Emma. (p.s. Am waiting for Craftmo to restock your brushsets. It’s all out of stock so am patiently waiting)
Always enjoy watching your tutorials. I learn something new each time. Thank you so much for sharing your tips. I have only been watercoloring for 18 months but I have fallen in love with this medium and watching and learning from you has helped me tremendously. ♥️
Thanks! I have so much trouble with water, but I have trouble figuring out how to fix it. Now I realize it's because it's a combination of not knowing my brushes or my paper very well. So helpful to be able to see everything you're doing.
I recently retired and am just now getting back into watercolors since I have time to play. Watching your videos makes me think "oh yeah, I remember that" 🤣 Thank you so much for being an inspiration! 💕
I am new to watercolors. Your tutorials were great. Very informative with good visuals (dipping brush in water jar then removing excess) and more importantly your instructions were not intimidating. I felt that I could be successful and I made improvements.
Excellent tutorial! You explained water control very, very, well.💜🖌 Thanks so much for the great detail. Any age group could understand the instruction, and the visual was outstanding.💜
Omg - this was soooooo helpful! I absolutely adore watercolor, but I find I’ve become afraid to practice bc I knew there were some parts of the process that I had to have been missing, but I didn’t know WHAT. Well… now I know it’s water control. Thank you sooooo much! ❤
Such a helpful and informative tutorial! Seeing the role my materials and water played in previous problems really makes me hopeful that this time around my foray into watercolors will be more successful. Thanks for the renewed hope. I have just been diagnosed with a terminal illness and desire to fill my final days concentrating on the joy of color.
I have just watched/tried your first few videos over the past 2 days. The guide to Water Control has really helped to answer some of my questions. The visual of tapping of water, how wet paints are in tray and the perfect wetness on the page. Showing the paper types was very telling. Mine seems very coarse and water has dried out fast. I see a new purchase in my future!
This is exactly what I needed! I watched about 5 “watercolor for beginners” videos trying to find something on water control before finding this one 😅 Thank you!!
Just started watercolor and I learn so much from your detailed videos. Your delivery is clear, a great pace, and just the right amount of info. I agree with other comments- thank you for showing us how you are using your palette, or if you do it "wrong" what happens...I am using inexpensive products and you are helping me know and plan for what I will eventually upgrade to if I keep painting. Love your projuects. Thanks!!
I needed this tutorial Emma, I struggle with water. It is so frustrating, but I guess just have to keep practicing. It is true, you really need to use the right products to achieve the great results.🥰
Fabulous tutorial!! You explained it well. 👏👏 especially the part about the brush sizes and paper type. The mini-demos really sealed the deal 👍Thank you!!
I really appreciate your explanation of water control. I have always have problems with streaks and blooms. Now I understand why I’m getting poor results. Thanks so much. I can’t wait to give it a go soon! Wish me luck!
This a very informative video, my brushes, I've noticed, do dispense different amounts of water!, yes!. I am glad that you're showing the difference between ' cold Press and hot Press papers' and ' rough Paper '. I use some hot Press when I'm doing my ' Sketch Pad ' on the go painting at times.
Absolutely fantastic! I'm going in a couple of wks and started with wood pulp paper and it was horrible to use. I'm so glad I found this video, made so much sense and how to read the water levels. Thank you so much. So looking forward to moving forward in my journey.
Thanks for posting this video! I've been painting for several years and STILL have trouble with this. This explains why a lot of my paintings look like gouache because the paint is so concentrated.
Thank you. I have experience with pools and puddles, ugh. Especially in small areas such as windows on houses. I will certainly be more aware of the amount of water.
Very helpful and well presented. The one thing you didn’t cover was how much water on your paint and what effect it has on value as well as water on brush and paper
Very nice! One thing I would like to see is the amount of water to use when you're doing a line of background trees in a landscape. Mine always end up being blobs :)
I looked through your list of supplies, but didn't find information the brushes you're using. Would you mind giving me information on the brand, please. Great tutorial! You are a very good instructor.
Apply the paint right away. You don’t want any spots to dry before you apply the paint. Another factor that I should’ve mentioned in the video is climate. If you’re working in a hot dry space, your paper may dry faster so you’ll have to work quickly.
You say way too much. This video could be about 10 minutes if you'd organize your thoughts and succinctly describe what you want to convey. It sounds like you're talking to 5 year olds.
Summer vacation is on. Possibly some 5 yo would watch...or their parent...one never knows.. She has said she will do her best to explain.. I found the dismissal of the large mop brush to promote her own brand...that was a bit self serving 😅 I am sure the fat mop brush has its place in artwork that another painter will find very valuable
It never fails to surprise me how snarky some people can get about a perfectly helpful, innocuous video about water control... This video was very helpful to me and I'm 54.
@@earthrooster1969yes, using a mop brush is definitely a skill and one I really want to get good at! I’ve seen artists get fine details with them. Oh how I envy them😊
Showing what you’re doing in the water jar and paint pans is super helpful! Thanks for that-it’s missing from a lot of other beginner videos.

You talked about cold press, and hot press. When you demonstrated on the paper you described as rough, rough was that hot press?
Very very helpful!!!
Very helpful!
I looked through your list of supplies, but didn't find information the brushes you're using. Would you mind giving me information on the brand, please. Great tutorial! You are a very good instructor.
I found your link to the brushes! Sorry, my error.
At 12:30 what paints do you use??? Because my paints do NOT activate like that, even after spritzing them with water from a misting spray bottle
Do you have any lessons on perspective?
When I do washes, the top has dried quickly and when I brush over it, the water on the damp brush reuins the wash. Thoughts?
I’m looking for the link to your watercolor brushes…
Your website isn’t allowing me to purchase your round brush set! Please help!
Will your Botanical brush set be coming back in stock?
When you do a large wash do you let the water soak in before applying the paint....how much time before applying the paint??
Apply the paint right away. You don’t want any spots to dry before you apply the paint. Another factor that I should’ve mentioned in the video is climate. If you’re working in a hot dry space, your paper may dry faster so you’ll have to work quickly.
What brand were those mop brushes you showed in the beginning?
