Started this video Saturday morning in Australia... listening to how you gift watercolours etc... and decide to get on my local facebook marketplace... discover lovely elderly lady selling off her Winsor and Newton paints as she has been having issues with her hands...within an hour I am at her house, hearing her story and promising to give her paints, and a bunch of paper and sketch pads and artist books AND sable brushed lovingly collected over the years a good home. They are my first artist grade quality paints, a total of 39 tubes, most 5ml W&N artist quality, and she sold them for the price of 6 new W&N 5ml tubes equivalent in Australia. I am currently swatching along with you, and if it hadn't been for your video I would have never checked facebook marketplace. So THANK YOU.

I'm retired and stuck at home much of the time with a heart condition. I started painting just to have something to do. I've tried a few other RUclips tutorials, but yours are the ones that come out looking good when I paint them! The others were too skimpy on instructions or much too complex for a beginner. Thank you so much!

I would recommend in one of the three empty wells of mixing a lavender with the tube paints inside the well and letting it dry. That way you have a a premixed lavender. Since you paint a lot of flowers that would come in handy. You could squeeze out your blue and pink and then squeeze out white until you get the color you like. This was a great video and I am sure it took hours to make!

Natural Earth Lapis Lazuli means the mineral itself is used as the pigment similar to Daniel Smith Primatek Mineral Marvels.... if it says amethyst/jadeite, it is the mineral/gem itself that is ground up and mixed with binders.

This was quite the undertaking, Emma! I love the process of setting up a new palette. It is a great way to really learn your colors and so much fun. Palettes are really personal and everyone’s will be different. And it depends on what you paint. I paint mostly flowers so I have a lot of pinks and reds. I do a lot of mixing of greens and blues. Some of my favorite colors are violets, purples, roses, magentas, indanthrene blue, yellow gold and olive green. Thanks for sharing your process and how you organize your palette. Very motivating.🥰

Emma~ Right around 19:15 in the video, your pronunciation of Lapis Lazuli, though hesitant, is correct. It is a semiprecious stone, I think primarily form South America (my sister lived in Chile for 18 months, and brought a bit back.) It is exactly the shade of the paint you have - I see other comments explain that the pigment in the paint *is* the gem itself, which makes sense and explains why it granulates. Sometimes you'll see a piece with a vein of gold in it. So beautiful!!
What a fun project! I did this a few weeks ago on a much smaller scale, and a mix of student and professional paints. I am *so* looking forward to future projects with this palette!!

I remember when I went crazy trying to find Potter Pink! I just had to have it. Ended up getting it brought up from Florida for me. So granulating that I don't use it. :(

@@cindydore4456 I find that if I don’t use too much water it doesn’t really granulate. Even on my Arches paper.

Amazing video and palette! I think that palette is one of the aluminum one’s. I have a smaller one that’s aluminum and was told the aluminum is why the paint doesn’t bead! Enjoy your new palette and thanks for showing us!

The plastic ones bead at first, but get better with use. Rubbing them well with a scouring sponge safe for use on nonstick cookware can help a lot. Some people swear by using toothpaste, and still others coat it with jesso or watercolor ground. I had never considered that a little fine grit sandpaper rub in the center of the wells might keep the paint from falling out when it is closed.
I am definitely going to change to a metal palette eventually because my plastic one is becoming stained in the mixing area. For now, I bought an inexpensive rose shaped ceramic palette by Meeden, so I always have a clean white background to mix on. I didn't think it was worth the cost to get a nice metal palette with removable half pans as a beginner. Now I understand the wisdom of being able to pop out the pans to change a color without having to scrape a section out. 😂

Even the bullet proof palettes can stain from your staining paints! I have used the Mr. Clean magic sponge to remove the stains! I have used a knife or wire brush to create a rough spot in wells to keep the paints from cracking and falling out!

@@mjpete27 I have one of these too and it did stain mildly. I actually don't use my old ones much anymore. Once I tried a ceramic palette, I fell in love. I also have 2 clear acrylic trays that have a clear magnetic cover and ceramic half-pans, but then still use a ceramic palette to mix on. I’m so picky it's ridiculous.

@@deborahhillman4120 Yep! Me too! I have several porcelain palettes that are so wonderful. I found using the old butcher trays another way to get great mixing areas! The butcher tray is a metal pan with a ceramic porcelain coating so much lighter and it will not break when dropped!

I really hate hearing RUclipsrs have to learn to constantly justify their art collections when that’s their job, and they work hard for what they have, and we benefit from you guys showing it to us. If people want to see budget, art supplies and budget videos, then there are plenty of RUclips videos out there that do just that all you have to do is type in those keywords. There are also a lot of us that might be on a tight budget but like to buy really good quality stuffand love to see other people’s collections. I wish people would stop apologising and putting up disclaimers. You’re entitled to have what you have.
