I look forward to one of these palette updates every year, it’s so cool to see how you simplify your palette to get rid of redundant colors. Beautiful selection :)
If you have room for one more color: Prussian blue is AMAZING with quin burnt orange. The greens and browns you can get with those two is fantastic, it's one of my favorite color combinations and makes a cool limited pallete.
I love mixing Qor’s Indigo with Quin Burnt Orange for the same reasons. I find I don’t even use my Burnt Umber if I have those two, plus I use Quin Burnt Orange more than any of my browns anyway (for portraits)
Mostly swatching videos bore me deeply, but yours are packed with so much information and insight which makes them a joy to watch. You take so much care with the lighting and camera angles which means the viewer can really see the properties you are speaking about. Happy xmas and new year.
I really enjoy your videos. For colors tend you intend to mix a lot (like your two yellows), you can put them as two separate stripes in the same well. This was actually an idea from Mijello Mission where they suggest putting two or three stripes of colors in the same well for those common mixtures. This will save you some space too 😄
I'm on a no buy moratorium for the last several months. I have way too much paint! I like a few DS paints and may get that phathlo turquoise and Pipestone red. The only reason I'd get the Minnesota Pipestone red is because I'm from Minnesota and spent several summer trips to Pipestone to go to the museum and hieroglyphics area, and field trips. Lived 50 miles away. It's just nostalgia. I still have a little Pipestone turtle I got as a souvenir 60 years ago.
The quinacridone gold made my heart jump! My most used colour from my Roman Szmal collection is quinacridone gold and I could not go without it. It was love at first sight and I'll never abandon it. I am very curious for the DS Quin Gold though!
It's such a powerful color! And it seems to be a color that a ton of people use, so I like to know how it behaves. I've been enjoying it for some experiments in the studio, especially for mixing greens and greys
For the colors you find gummy and don’t reactivate well, schminke watercolors are absolutely amazing for drying and using as cakes for reactication! So if you’re looking for ones that reactivate well I would recommend schminke!
Yes I have used Schmincke a lot and enjoy them too. They are great. But they have animal byproducts which I'm trying to avoid as I continue to buy materials
This is great! I'm a longtime fan of Daniel Smith watercolours, but there were a few fantastic colours I didn't yet have. Jacskson's DS sale, here I come! 😄Thanks, also for the tips on what colours to mix for which kinds of effects.
Hi Sarah! Another Sara here from Canada! You should really truly try Jadeite Green. It is the most stunning natural green and it's a primatek. It has a large value range as well! I discovered it through the artist Thomas Schaller! He uses only Jadeite and Serpentine as his greens for his landscapes and urban scenes. So I bought it and its such a beautiful color! It's better than your old diopside choice deeper and much more of a larger value range!
I learn so much from your thoughtful narration, Sarah ❤ Thank you (and Wolfy) for all the beauty you share with us here 🙏 Merry Christmas to you (and Floki, too) - can’t wait to see 2024 unfold!
Stunning colors!! Quin Gold is so much fun to mix with other colors, especially granulating colors. A new favorite of mine is DS Aussie Red Gold - PY83, PR101, and PV19. It’s a gorgeous deep reddish yellow. Thank you for sharing! 🙌💕🙌
Oh sounds like a nice color. I totally love my Deep Scarlet mixed with a bit of lemon yellow, so I probably don't "need" any super warm orange/yellows but hey, it's fun!
So happy to see this pop up on my page - I was afraid that you had abandoned watercolor for goache! I miss your watercolor videos and hope you will do more in the new year!
I love Daniel Smith paints. I treated myself to a dot card last year and swatched them all in my sketchbook so I can select a few useful colours that I know I'll use often. 😊
After spending a few days at Art Institute of Chicago studying Monet, I was inspired and picked up a watercolor tube of W&N Cobalt Violet, as well as Utrecht in oil. I have barely gotten a chance to play with it, but good news: no white, just PV14, fairly transparent, but it is pricy. That said, I put it in my travel kits yesterday.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video and dedicating so much effort to creating valuable content that benefits all watercolor artists. Wishing you a truly wonderful day!
I'd considered getting that lavender shade before, it's so beautiful! lovely to see your colour selection process, it's always interesting seeing which colours different people are drawn to ❤❤
I love watching swatching videos and hearing how other artists use color. Denise Soden does lovely videos and explains what she uses the colors for which is great. And Natasha Newton
You might want to consider trying their lavender gouache. Same pigments and binder but higher pigment load than the watercolour version. I found I was using up the watercolour one too quickly so switched to gouache to use very diluted or smaller ammounts in mixing for watercolour paintings and thicker for gouache paintings- dual purpose
I love seeing what other artists are up to like this, and planning for in the future. I don't have any new watercolors (I went on a no buy for 2023) but I do have some that I want to use more of. I have a big collection with different palettes/brands. It's like a window into how we've evolved over time in our tastes as artists.
Happy Holidays! Thank you for sharing your palette update with us. In case you weren't aware, the production of PO48 has been discontinued, so if you fall hard for Quinacridone Burnt Orange, Quinacridone Gold, and Undersea Green, keep an eye on stock. When PO49 was discontinued, Daniel Smith had enough to keep producing for near a decade. QoR and Roman Szmal (and maybe others) have started introducing new versions to replace PO48 mixes.
it is impossible to get any paint with PO48 now. The buy up by Daniel Smith happened a number of years back and they've got no stock left with PO48 and haven't had for some time. Unless you can find something in a garage sale that's very old stock, you're out of luck.
@@warpedweft9004I think you might be getting PO48 and PO49 mixed up. Quin burnt orange (PO48) is still available from some brands. M Graham and Daniel smith still have them available
If you love turquoise, you should try Daniel Smith's Ultramarine Turquoise. I ended up keeping it on a palette instead of the Phthalo Turquoise because it has some granulation and far less drying shift. The only downside is that it doesn't get as dark in mass tone, but I actually like that because it means it doesn't overwhelm mixes as easily. 😄 Your praise of Amethyst has made me want to give it another try! And somehow I wasn't aware DS added a Quin Magenta in addition to the Quin Lilac. I'll be interested to see how you end up comparing them after using both for awhile.
Ultramarine Turquoise is very similar in hue to Amazonite (although different in granulation) and bonus--is a Series 1 price. It's also mixable using DS Ultramarine PB29 and Phthalo Green PG7.
What a beautiful calming video 😊. I’m just picking up my brush again (I’m very new) and I need to pick up paints. It’s a bit overwhelming to decide. I’m In Canada 😊
Thank so much for a great video and God Jul to you from a snowy Sweden.! As I was looking though my stash to see if I had something alike to Lavender ( DS is very very expensive here) I was happy to find a good quality colour in my drawer that I will try in my mixes. If anyone is looking for a less expensive Lavender thecompany White Nights/St Petersburg makes a lavender watercolour w the same pigments that is in the Daniel Smith’s hue. It is also called Lavender. I know this company is based in Russia so it might be tricky to import because of embargos but it has always been a popular brand and I am sure shops still have it in stock. If you do not want to buy a Russian brand the Ukranian Rosa Gallery brand has a similar hue ( they normally have similar hues to the St Petersburg) but as I do not have it in my stash I don’t know the pigments but I am sure that is easily found on google.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I have been having a hell of a time motivating to paint of late. (Complicated life things and just not sleeping very well). This has got my painterly juices flowing again.❤
I’ve found the same for the last two years. Love being creative alongside videos like this, which make me want to get out and sketching and just getting my brushes to paint and paper. But ultimately I haven’t been finding joy in painting anything, really. So it’s all on hold for me for now. It will come back, that inkling. So I’ll just wait it out and build up my list of places and ideas and I’ll gather another color or two, maybe try a couple DS colors, as I’ve never tried them. Just got a couple paintbrushes and a tiny black paper pad to use w markers and chalks. Till then, I’m watching and dreaming through amazing artists like Miss Sarah.
I listen to you (first time) and am absorbing your comments about the colors. I too, am a huge fan of turquoise, even though I don't actually use it as much as I'd like to (haven't learned how to paint underwater scenes yet). Thank you!
Happy Holidays, Sarah, and a beautiful, full, and joyful New Year. Thank you so very much for today's video (love your choices and all of your rationale), and thank you for them all. Always insightful, always effortlessly teaching, and always accessible to the beginningest beginner. Bless. 🙏❤🙏
Hullo Sarah, I have only watched a few of your videos. I have stopped using DS paints. Not only the Primatek scandal but I had 3 horrible customer service sessions with their company that I have decided they simply care more for profits than customers. I know people can have bad days and can take it out on others, but 3 different customer service representatives across a 6 month time frame? Nope they lost me as a customer and as an Artist that recommended their paints in the past! I also can encourage you to try American Journey watercolor paints or DaVinci of California they are a full paint company and so wonderful to work with on the phone or VIA e-mails! Thank you for sharing your lovely palette and color choices, I think I have similar colors and mixers in several of my palettes. Please take care, be safe and have a lovely day 😊
I have a small limited “fun palette” without a standard yellow but with quin gold and green gold and it actually works great for almost everything if used at the proper concentration ❤
I look forward to a video on your updated plein air palette. I used your colors on a trip to the UK this past fall, and they were spot on. Thank you for the inspiring content!
I mixed a very similar color to Undersea green with Quinacridone gold and ultramarine with a hint of bloodstone genuine. But kind of a faff which is why having a tube is nice :)
Hi Sarah, I wish you and your family a healthy Happy New Year!🍀🍀🍀 Thank you very much for sharing your work in 2023. I appreciate it and learned so much. Wish you all the best and happy painting in 2024🎉!!! Gabi:)
I love how you talk about color. I always learn a lot and it helps me reflect on what is in my own palette which I see as a good thing! I too have found Manganese Blue Hue a bit difficult to activate which I find disrupts my work flow. I have found I prefer colors that easily reactivate. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Wolfy and Floki!
I could watch ya swatch all day long! I see Green Apatite Genuine in my future. I added Quin Gold Deep recently and started using Quin Lilac for any pinky needs; I dream in Undersea Green. I still love your videos SB, all the best to you and Wolfy in 2024 and beyond.
Deep Scarlet is a long-time permanent color on my palette, it’s probably my favorite rich red. Quin Gold is another long-time palette mvp. I tend to use it a lot with Holbein’s Neutral Tint, they compliment each other so well. Cobalt Turquoise is a recent addition to my palette, it’s cooler, brighter, and lighter than Phthalo Turq, and is definitely another “a little goes a long way” color. I’ve also swapped out DS’s UnderSea Green (which I love,) for Sennelier’s Greenish Umber, which I use All The Time.
Thanks for sharing.❤ If you want a less staining and a bit of granulation in your Turquoise try Ultramarine Turquoise. It’s very similar to the Phathlo and Amazonite.
I love your swatching videos! I always learn something new about some of the colors I already use and ways to mix them that I hadn't thought of before. Bloodstone and Green Apatite have been on my palette for over six years and I've gone through many tubes of them. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU, WOLFY, AND FLOKI!
Merry Christmas Sarah and Wolfy! You guys are such a great team - in every way. Thanks for all you share. Looking forward to coming along for your 2024 adventures
Your videos make me excited to keep painting and practicing! I long to know my paints, and which colours work best for each environment, as well as you do. Happy holidays!
Once I started doing this thing where I don't change pigments for 3-4 months - it changed the game. It gives me an opportunity to get intimately familiar with mixes and it really helps me learn what works (or doesn't)
Hi Sarah, hope you're well! Please, consider a video on color mixes and their proper applications in your paintings. I'd love to watch and learn. Thank you! Merry Christmas! ❤️😃
I also took workshops with both Iain Stewart and Thomas Schaller. Schaller prefers the Holbein Lavender so I bought that and found I prefer that to the DS. I’ve recently tried to recreate a John Singer Sargent and find I am liking the modern equivalents to the colors he had. One being “BrownPink” which I found from Sennelier. It was better than the Holbein greenish yellow Stewart liked and the DS rich green gold. I’m also trying using Viridian instead of phthalo green and Prussian blue instead of phthalo blue. I love the primateks. There is nothing like them and the granulations are awesome. Piedmontite is awesome as there is such a color shift depending on the saturation. Love serpentine, green apatite, jadeite and amazonite. I also like the quin lilac. PO48 has been discontinued so stock up now and with anything you like that has it in the mix. Quin burnt orange and quin gold. DS says they have a 20 year supply but it won’t last forever. I stocked up on the PO49 quin gold before it was gone and it’s even better than the current mix.
Sarah, Thanks for all your excellent advice and inspiration. Your videos are beautifully done. I especially appreciate the guidance about pigment choices and mixes in your palette videos. I pull out my swatches (on key rings by color) to learn and be encouraged to experiment. Wishing you and yours, a lovely holiday season. All the best in 2024!
Love watching this type of videos! Your colours look so amazing swatched all together - I am very jealous because in architecture you basically need greys and browns hahaha Happy holidays, Sarah!
I really enjoy listening to why watercolor artists choose the colors for their palette. It opens my eyes to how I can use these colors. Thanks! Did you know that Daniel Smith now has Lavender gouache?
I love how you tell us how you use certain colors! Such a great video. I think I'll pick up that amazonite, and add deep scarlet and lavender to my "just for fun" palette to play with them. Thank you for sharing this and may you and ours have a very Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁🎅
Hi Sarah, absolutely love your content. I wanted to suggest trying the Danial Smith Prussian Green, if you haven’t already. You might like it since you like the Phthalo turquoise. I love them both so much. ❤
I haven’t used watercolors..yet…but I love watching your videos because they are so informative. Hoping to get into gouache and watercolor in 2024. Just wanted to tell say Merry Christmas to you and Wolfy and Floki! 🎄❤. Looking forward to 2024 when the subscription boxes start. I’m excited! 😊❤
Thank you for all the inspiration you've provided this year. I can't wait to get started in my gouache lessons in the new year. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
LAVENDER MADE ME GO BACK TO WATERCOLORS...it's been a while I was only using gouache and postercolors.. but a year ago I had a chance to buy holbein lavender and gray and they made me love the watercolors again and ditch the guache and poster colors. the holbein lavender was just too nice to mix with a lot of colors acually I love combining it with ultramarine for sky...lavender is underrated. I hope most artist give it try
Bloodstone makes some incredible mixes. I also love the Amazonite and Amethyst. I just got iron oxide brown and am loving it, too. I tend to use the Hansa Yellow light rather than Lemon Yellow. And I keep phthalo turquoise & ultramarine blue, too. Those are such beautiful colours! Happy Holidays to you both.
First of all, I love those palettes, and have used them for a dozen years or more. I have 3 of them. One for gouache, and the others with 2 different watercolor palettes. Secondly, darn you anyway for showing me more paint colors that I’m just going to have to buy!😉Just kidding, but really they’re1 so beautiful, I gotta get at least the Phthalo Turquoise and the Amethyst. I have a lot of Daniel Smith colors, but not many Primateks. Thanks for sharing with us. I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year🎄🎅🎄
Love all of your colors!! Thank you so much Sarah for your videos, they are all so inspiring and helpful especially as I'm still fairly new in my watercolor journey. Loving every second! Merry Christmas! 🎄
I think I have the same (or very similar) palette with 18 wells. I've sorta accumulated a lot of paints, but at some point wanted to build a custom palette. At first I found it difficult to limit myself to 18 paints, but now I'm super happy with the selection, and I reach for it more often than my larger tin of watercolors. I love the size of the palette. I also recently bought a bunch of granulating watercolors from Daniel Smith. I tend to not like granulating watercolors, but this time I intentionally set out to buy some, so that I could paint textured walls and such more easily. Have you tried Geothite yet? I bought that one to paint sandy beaches. Need to keep Bronzite in mind for some darker rocks. The Phthalo Turquoise is so stunning! I can see why you love it. I have a turquoise problem, though, so I should probably resist buying another one... xD
Another wonderful video. It is sad that PO 48 is no more. I stocked up on all the DS watercolors that have PO 48 in it like Undersea green, quin gold, quin gold deep, sap green.
Both are gorgeous colours, good suggestion!!!
Im gona try this! Thank you for sharing!
Great combo!
I love mixing Qor’s Indigo with Quin Burnt Orange for the same reasons. I find I don’t even use my Burnt Umber if I have those two, plus I use Quin Burnt Orange more than any of my browns anyway (for portraits)
This is such a good tip! Been wanting to add a warm orangey brown to my palette and you made me excited about this combo! Thank you!

Aussie Red is one of my favorites and must haves!
I would love to see your other pallets
So happy to see this pop up on my page - I was afraid that you had abandoned watercolor for goache! I miss your watercolor videos and hope you will do more in the new year!
I love Daniel Smith paints. I treated myself to a dot card last year and swatched them all in my sketchbook so I can select a few useful colours that I know I'll use often. 😊
I still have my dot cards and look at them now and then...so many gorgeous colors!!
@SarahBurnsStudio I like the fact that the dot samples are big enough to be useful for testing on a small sketch to see if you really like them. 😊

I understand. I get a bit depressed this time of year. Let's try to do at least one painting this weekend just for fun!

Looks fabulous! Looking forward to your next paintings with these new colors.😄
Quin Gold and Burnt Orange for me are absolutely wonderful.
Great informative video, thank you. Wishing you both a very happy Christmas and best wishes for 2024.

Thanks for sharing, I’m surprised at the umber of convenience colours you use, but no one can deny their attraction
Really a wonderful selection of colors. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely colours. I have to watch this again and take some notes. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours. Happiness, joy and health for the new year.
I like your Christmas jumper as well as the watercolours
Amazing video, and happy holidays to you too!!!❤

I look forward to a video on your updated plein air palette. I used your colors on a trip to the UK this past fall, and they were spot on. Thank you for the inspiring content!
Just added Bloodstone to my Gouache pallette!
I am in southern Oregon, so close to you. I agree about Undersea green, my fav! I am sad that PO 48 is going away. I stocked up on tubes of that one.
I mixed a very similar color to Undersea green with Quinacridone gold and ultramarine with a hint of bloodstone genuine. But kind of a faff which is why having a tube is nice :)
Your mountain paintings-incredible!!!! Thanks so much for this. Coming from gouache i really want to get more into watercolors and this helps!
Hi Sarah, I wish you and your family a healthy Happy New Year!🍀🍀🍀 Thank you very much for sharing your work in 2023. I appreciate it and learned so much. Wish you all the best and happy painting in 2024🎉!!! Gabi:)
This was so helpful. Thank you so much!
Gorgeous color palette 🎨 choices! Have a great Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 & a Joyful Prosperous 2024 New Year!
Thank you, and a very merry christmas to you!
thank you for sharing.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you for an inspiring video🎄🎄🎄♥️🎨🖌️
Have a lovely weekend and holiday!
You should try the sodalite with your quinacridone gold for an amazing green 😊
Thank you for this! Happy New Year!
Happiest of new years to you!
Happy holidays, Sarah and Wolffy! Love your videos and can’t wait to see what’s coming in 2024 ❤❤
Such beautiful colors! Makes me want to paint right now 😊 Happy Christmas!
I plan on doing lots of painting just for fun during the holidays :)
Merry Christmas Sarah!
Merry Christmas Sarah and Wolfy! You guys are such a great team - in every way. Thanks for all you share. Looking forward to coming along for your 2024 adventures
Thank you so much! Merry Christmas!
Thank you....
I'm a new subbie. Sent by Jenna Rainey. Anxious to follow your channel.

Hi Sarah, hope you're well! Please, consider a video on color mixes and their proper applications in your paintings. I'd love to watch and learn. Thank you! Merry Christmas! ❤️😃
If you haven’t tried their Aussie red gold you should!
Thanks!
Great selections! Daniel Smith has a Lavender Gouache.
I use Quin Lilac instead of Opera Rose because of opera's fugitive issue. The lilac makes a pretty good substitute.
I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year🎄🎅🎄
Phthalo turquoise and amethyst are my two favorites on my palette! You'll love them
Merry Xmas Sarah, to you and your assistant film director
Happy Christmas and New years to you!
Oohh you need to try American Journey’s Carr Yellow. It is so beautiful and more transparent than DS New Gamboge.
Love all of your colors!! Thank you so much Sarah for your videos, they are all so inspiring and helpful especially as I'm still fairly new in my watercolor journey. Loving every second! Merry Christmas! 🎄
I wish you and yours… a. Very Merry Christmas.. just got your brushes from craftamo.. can’t wait to try them.. after Christmas.. ❤
Awesome! Hope you have lots of fun. Merry Christmas
I have a turquoise problem, though, so I should probably resist buying another one... xD
Cool colour thanks Sarah, lavendar looks interesting but ill have to save up Daniel Smith is sooooo expensive in england
Another wonderful video. It is sad that PO 48 is no more. I stocked up on all the DS watercolors that have PO 48 in it like Undersea green, quin gold, quin gold deep, sap green.
What I've learned from changing up my palette in 2023 is that any color is replaceable!
Wasn't there a DS blog post where they said they have enough of the pigment to keep making paint for the next 20 years?
I think they said about 10 years but I feel good having an extra tube of each color that I love.
