I'll forget waiting in line at a Babbages (yeah, remember Babbages?) with a best friend who had pre ordered his Dreamcast for the midnight release of 9/9/99. The anticipation was certainly palpable. It was a four hour round trip to St. Louis and back. We made it back to my friend's house around 2:30 in the morning and hooked it up immediately. We went back and forth on Soulcaliber for an hour before he ended up going to bed. Me, on the other hand stayed up until dawn; just mesmerized by the newfound graphical prowess. To think that I was just playing Castlevania 64 earlier that very day; and then playing the Dreamcast that following morning was just mind blowing. I'll never forget that.
Why are you gonna forget that
@@MaxH0ward I'm not. It's called a clerical error. I sent the message without proofreading it properly.
People forget that the Dreamcast released the same day as FF8. Not FF9 but FF8. The PSX hadn't even hit its peak graphics and then the Dreamcast comes along, and the jump was incredible. That whale in Sonic Adventure, the arenas of Soulcalibur, everything looked incredible.
I got mine on release day and traded in my boxed copy of Chrono Trigger to afford it. In hindsight, that stings, but I'm glad I did it. The Dreamcast was just that incredible at the time.
@@neogohanamv On top of that, the Japanese launch was just days after Ocarina of Time!

I only have so many Dreamcast Games, and havent played many of them, yet.
But Sonic Adventure 1 & Skies Of Arcadia, ALONE, made me feel Justified in Owning a Dreamcast!!
Shaking maracas while dressed as a banana. The man always knows how to level up in life
ikr? save some riz for the rest of us!
I was pretty depressed. Then I saw Retrobird just put a Dreamcast video up! My favorite system
One game that I think has been unfairly forgotten is Fur Fighters. It was a third-person shooter/collectathon where you swap between 6 different characters with their own abilities. Granted, it's been a long time since I fully replayed it, but at the time it really reminded me of Rare's best games on the N64.
Love the Dreamcast so much. Still play it every now and then. Skies of Arcadia, PSO, MVC2, Jet Grind Radio. The list of classics goes on and on.
I have my Dreamcast in my living room and love showing it off to my nephews. They thought the "crappy graphics" were lame at first but loved it once they gave it a chance.
‘Crappy graphics?’ Lol. ECCO Defender Of The Future with a HDMI cable is far from crappy. It looks stunningly beautiful and impressive even to this day. I’m glad they learned to appreciate it after playing it though. 🥳
I haven't even clicked the video before I knew Dynamite Cop was gonna be on this LOL
anyone remember Sword of the Beserk :Guts Rage? It had awesome cape physics and a great story
Armada was an amazing banger of an experience I don't hear people talk about when they mention the cast.
This makes me happy. I love the Dreamcast. I think it is my favorite of the 99-05 consoles.
Gen 5.5 … a generation in it’s own right.
We'll always remember the banana costume. And of course, the bread bag clip collection. Good job as always RB.
I loved the Dreamcast. What an incredible, far ahead of its time, console. Here’s a little list of some of my favorites that you didn’t already mention:
Crazy Taxi
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia 2
Sonic Adventure 1 + 2
Jet Set Radio
Soul Calibur
Dead or Alive 2
Street Fighter III (Double Impact + 3rd Strike)
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Power Stone 1 + 2
Project Justice
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Daytona USA
Record of Lodoss War
Shenmue 1 + 2
Ecco the Dolphin
Space Channel 5 1 + 2
Metropolis Street Racer, Test Drive LeMans, Tokio Xtreme Racer, 18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker, Daytona USA, Sword of the Berserk, Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Code Veronica, Capcom Vs SNK 2 and Soul Calibur are games that just don't get old. People can say I'm nostalgic, but can't say honestly that I'm lying about this console being the most underrated piece of entertainment ever released.
Honestly, the only kind of game that I missed back in the day was a good calcio/fußball/futebol/fútbol/football game. Everything else that consoles usually did was well represented on Dreamcast
add in Hydro Thunder, MDK2, ECCO. There’s so many. Love these particular games for unique reasons. ECCO Defender Of The Future for Dreamcast is truly a delightful experience.
Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Power Stone 2, Toy Commander. :)
Nice! I have Soul Calibur and Toy Commander! Them's good vidja games!
Can’t forget hydro thunder.
Waiting for your videos is like being super hungry and Waiting for the pizza delivery person to show up: the hesitation, the anxiety.
Then once the pizza is here, I eat it so fast that I feel like my day is over, there's nothing else to do..
Or is there? Samba de Amigos!
The shaking of the maracas was so funny lmao!
My cousin who passed thought enough of me to give me his Dreamcast I treasure it and still play it to this day Jet Grind Radio is always in rotation with Project Justice Thanks Scott miss you!
Dynamite Cop is insane. So much fun.
The Dreamcast gave us the Yakuza series. Let us never forget.
Virtual-On or also known as (Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram) was such a cinematic and dynamic mech fighting game.
So many good games in such a short time. Dreamcast was really a special machine. I still enjoy mine to this day.
Dynamite Cop was sooo good! Definitely makes me want a Dreamcast remembering it
1:53. lol I like the weird persona you play in these videos, it’s great 😂
Need a part 2!....spent untold hours playing Soul Caliber
Whoa, someone actually mentioned - and praised - "Confidential Mission"?! I was already planning to make a post about my favorite DC games, and mention how no one ever brings that up, but then... YOU COVERED IT FIRST OUT THE GATE!!! By the way, speaking of other ways people can use their light-gun, "Sega Smash Pack: Volume 1" also includes a fully-compatible copy of "Virtua Cop 2".
Anyways, my beloved Dreamcast experiences include: "Confidential Mission", "Crazy Taxi", "House of the Dead 2", "Jet Grind Radio", "Phantasy Star Online", "Resident Evil: Code Veronica," "Sega Smash Pack: Volume 1", "Shenmue", "Skies of Arcadia", and "Sword of the Berserk: Gut's Rage". Not included are any titles I either never enjoyed, or possibly never played for a significant duration (and thus lack an opinion).
Sadly, as for the system itself, that would eventually die in a basement flooding incident.
I have Saturn and I have Dreamcast. I have a light gun for Dreamcast, but not Saturn, however, with Sega Smash Pack I can use my Dreamcast light gun to play a Saturn light gun game!
I'm all confused after typing that.... I think I got that right...
Sorry that you got flooded. I know what that's like. I didn't lose any game collection in my flood, though, so, my condolences, friend.
Yeah, Confidential Mission doesn't get brought up enough!
There are far too many awesome Dreamcast games to just start naming them. I got so into that system that I imported one in advance just so I wouldn't have to wait to play Power Stone. It got me back into 2D shooters and fighters in a big way, and I own just about everything I ever wanted for it. I cleaned house at stores like EB Games around 2002, where you could get so many games for under $5, and spent the real money to import all of the shooters and fighters that didn't come out over here. Just so much of the library is pick up and play fun that nearly anyone can enjoy.
Dreamcast is sick
Alone in the Dark - New Nightmare is also best on Dreamcast I think, pretty good survival horror that is often overlooked.
That's awesome fun.
That's a good point about fighting games having too big of rosters. It starts to feel like they're just dumping assets into the game, like you're playing MUGEN or something, and it can start to lose its identity.
MvC2 isn't the WORST example of that, but it did have 56 playable characters, and I don't think I could name more than a dozen of them.
Yeah, it was an especially massive roster back then too. The jump in # of characters from the last game was pretty staggering.
These videos of yours are just getting more and more hilarious. Well done 😁
Amingo was part of my roommate's main team in mvc2 😅
Thank you!
Great vid, it's really hard to go wrong w/the Dreamcast. Your list was pretty solid too, especially Travh Romancer, I think a lot of people missed that. Games that I think are worth checking out include Crazy Taxi, Power Stone, Garou: MoW, Typing of the Dead, Jet Grind Radio, and Street Fighter Alpha 3.
The Dreamcast is still alive in our hearts.
Only one person I knew had one and we loved it…it somehow felt special to have this unusual console. Only wish I could’ve played online at higher speeds!
Spider-man, Tony Hawk 1, Soul Calibur 1, Sonic Aventure 1 and Virtual Tennis 1 are the games I get back to. MVC 1 and SF 3 and CVS2 too, sometimes.
I had Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, House of the Dead 2 and Ready to Rumble Boxing. I loved all of those.
Skies of Arcadia was a great title too, but I never owned the Dreamcast version. I ended up getting it on the GameCube later on.
Napple Tale is special. Probably the best OST I have heard in gaming!
and also... wait for it... Frogger 2.
Toy Commander was always one of my favorite Dreamcast games
I never had a Dreamcast, but I did play Phantasy Star Online on the Gamecube. Man I loved that game
Dreamcast is really good for bringing arcade games home. I think I read somewhere that was also the Saturn's strategy. It was great for racing, fighting, and sports games. It also was really the first console to go all in on online play. There was an emphasis on innovation too, what with stuff like the VMUs or the game Seaman.
Unfortunately, it's terrible for longer single player experiences that can only be played on console. Games like Sonic Adventure and Shenmue were ambitious for the time, but they weren't revered like Ocarina of Time or Metal Gear Solid and they certainly didn't hold up as well as the latter pair. Not to mention the almost complete lack of RPGs. I have tried so hard to enjoy Dreamcast games, including all the ones mentioned on this vid, but I've since given up trying to force it. It really makes a lot of sense why it failed.
Buying a Dreamcast within Japan is not so expensive actually. After seeing this video it makes me want to pick one up! Thanks again for another amazing and humorous episode 😁
Oh my God it's been another week. Well, at least Retro Bird is on!
I just got through playing the Dreamcast on my projector last week
Power Stone 1 and 2, and Soul caliber are always a good time on the Dreamcast
The Dreamcast was an amazing console to me since it had a big library of good games on it, not counting also that was the first console in which I was introduced to the wonderful world of Sega and... yeah I arrived too late to the party, lol!.
But anyway tons of good games I played on that console, either the popular ones like Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online, Daytona USA 2001, Soul Calibur, the Sonic Adventure games, the Crazy Taxi ones, a lot of the Capcom fighting games, etc..., but also I played other titles that were kind obscure and not much people talk about it nowdays like: Super Magnetic Neo, Zombie Revenge or AeroWings.
Not counting also that I loved the small multiplayer competitive puzzle game: Swirl that was included in the web browser disc, still I'm kind sad that Sega never made a re-release of that game or at least some random studio made a clone game based on it.
That Banana suit with the maracas 😂
Sega Rally 2, Daytona USA, Mars Matrix, Gunbird 2, Street Fighter 3 (all of them), and Giga Wing (both of them) are just a couple but there are so many that fit here easily 😁
So many Dreamcast games that I really enjoy: Capcom vs SNK 2, Project Justice 2, Guilty Gear, etc.
Great games, Great controller and internet capable, the Dreamcast was the complete package. I miss the days of Sega consoles
I don't know about the controller.
I worked great for me, plus the VMU was really cool
Really wished I could have played Cannon Spike back then...it had Mega Man in it!
Great video!! I am a huge fan of Dynamite Cop!👍👍
Wow I got here early… don’t have a Dreamcast but I would love one
Power Stone 2 was my favorite game on the console.
Archimedes is worth talking about today, more than a lot of other computers of the era! lol
I always enjoyed the Resident Evil games on the Dreamcast. I know the Resident Evil games are also on the PlayStation and Gamecube, but the Dreamcast versions play so much better, in my opinion. Also, the Dreamcast visual memory card screen displays your health status, which was very cool, especially for the time.
I love absolutely everything RB does
Want to shout out Outtrigger, really love that one and I definitely wish it was on modern platforms!
Also. Unpopular opinion, I really like Sonic Shuffle.
If you're willing to grapple with a little Japanese, Twinkle Star Sprites and Cool Cool Toon are just great.
Shaking Maracas while dressed as a banana. Retro Bird always knows how to level up in life.
Why do i feel like Deja Vu? Oh well, we all need more Shaking of Maracas in our life!!!
I’ll admit I have a ton of childhood bias towards it, but I really love Looney Tunes Space Race. Definitely feel like it was one of the licensed games I had growing up that has held up the best, *especially* the soundtrack
My favorite console of all time
Marvel vs Capcom 2 is better than the first but, never forget, the 1st one is 4 players making it a very fun couch co op game
I had a Dreamcast, but I had to get rid of it because every time that I turned it on at night, when I finally had some free time to play, my wife would wake up and freak out thinking I was drilling a hole into the wall. 🤷♂️
Haha....
I bought a Dreamcast in 2018 and I thought it might be broken because it was louder than any other console I owned... turns out it's just a noisy machine.
Loudest.. console...ever. Can confirm. We always used to joke about how long we could leave it on before it might burst into flames. Lol
Yeah, that sucker's laser assembly grinds hard!
sooooul calibur, snow surfers, skies of arcadia
Me and my 1st cuz and our friends LOVED Dynamite cop on Dreamcast!!!!! And most these others as well! Also, I prefer marvel vs cap 1 the most as well. Love them all tho.
I bet you and your cousin played it a ton!
The only game I've ever played on the DC is Dynamite Cop! In 2019, I was still thinking of buying a DC with Dynamite Cop, and then the prices went through the roof, which leaves me without a DC, without DC, and sad. Would you look at that! Same initials.
Always more! RB is taking a week off. I'm playing "Fight the Algorithm" on my phone. I really don't play ANY games on my phone though. Just this one. Binge binge binge. Comment comment. Next videooooooooo...NOW!
Dynamite Cop reminds me of Fighting Force. Wanna check it out now.
Finally played Rocket Knight on the Genesis!
I can see why you hold it in such high regard, they were very creative in many ways, very innovative, very challenging, to say the least!
Haven't heard you mention it but I'm wondering if you are aware of the sequel; Sparkster - Rocket Knight adventure 2
On the Genesis
I've gotten stuck on the first or second level so far 😜
I was really amazed at some of the level design and boss fights in the first game I would be remiss if I did not say.
My honorable mention would be crazy taxi 2
It'd be nice if Capcom brought back Power Stone. Such a fun game 😊😊😊
Yeah, I think it would be a great series to bring back.
To me the golden era of console gaming started with the *Dreamcast* and ended with the *Playstation* 3. It was so good that it almost killed the arcade scene in America.
Best console of all time hands down
I don't have many Dreamcast games because I started collecting Dreamcast and Saturn at the same time in 2018 or so and focused more on Saturn. However, I do got one game you featured here which is Marvel vs Capcom!
When it comes to disc based games, I also tend to want to collect them CIB.
Sweet Dreamcast Arcade stick you got there Mr. Banana Guy! Uh... no innuendo intended! Yikes! I gotta go!
Theres a lot of good Dreamcast games. Unfortunately im in no financial position to start grabbing these games however. This is with a lot of consoles (GameCube, Saturn, even PS1 to an extent), but I want to at some point for sure, grab titles such as Jet Grind Radio, Marvel vs Capcom, SoA, and the Sonic adventure games. only time will tell if I can make that happen haha.
If you do end up getting them, those are some good ones you picked out!
You and Techdweeb are my favorite youtube personalities.
I love the Dreamcast!
I can always go back to Phantasy Star Online. It's still fun!
The Dreamcast is my favorite console of all. There are so many fun games. I tried hard to pick a handful of favorites to mention here but I can't. The list always ends up too long.
I love your videos
I always keep going back to Project Justice
Friday night with the bird man.. time to crack a nanner and pour a tall glass of ketchup water 🍻
I just wish my maracas worked right ;n;
I didn't know Dreamcast had these awesome gun games you showed in this vid & that it was arcade heavy. Now you used a Saturn controller for 1 game. Can you use that for all games?
I love your content Retro Bird. I hope you blow up. Well, not literally lol you know what I mean. Big hug!
Thank you!
I'm with you on Marvel vs Capcom 2. Too many characters, lame music, backgrounds that don't match the character sprites and removing medium attacks from the button layouts all make me prefer all the Marvel Fighting games by Capcom that came earlier.
SEGA Dreamcast: Soul Caliber, Crazy Taxi, Crazy Taxi 2, Paser Dragon Saga, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Daytona USA,
the dreamcast looks way better in real life than it does in this video, do you have a better way to capture footage that accurately replicates how it looks IRL?
I want that banana hat!
Can't talk about unique Dreamcast rhythm games without mentioning Space Channel 5.
Welcome to the Stage of History----SoulCalibur rulez
Hey Bird, what AV cable are you using for your Dreamcast on your CRT? S-Video?
mvc2 was dope on dreamcast! i really dig jin, he was my main goto... usually grab him captain america (really love doing final justice) and wolverine. Having played the ever living bejeezus out of every vertion ton Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, i have to say it is without a doubt the best on dreamcast. The original ps1 has the crappy ps1 warbling textures (sorry ps1 fans, its still has some banging games i love but those textures are undeniably bad) the pc version was released before the DC and has less poly models and lower rez textures. The xbox 2x version was buildt from the ground up and although had extra areas didnt have as nice lighting as DC and also just felt off, like too smooth and quick or something, it's hard to explain, but when you play both back to back the DC physics/control feels better.
Which adapter are you using to play with the Sega Saturn controller on the Dreamcast?
Great Vídeo RB
Lets see if this moves the ebay needle for Dreamcast games now
More samba de amigos with maracas!
Crazy Taxi
DC oozes personality
Just you wait they're going to release the Dreamcast 2 neocast
Wait what about powerstone 1 and 2 or project justice or sonic or resident evil or blue stinger star gladiator 1 and 2
