I concur, one of the best out there, and the channel seems to be growing decently.
I've been watching retro gaming content since before RUclips (AVGN, of course), but this channel has the perfect mix of production, family friendliness, self-deprecation/goofiness, and of course content quality (script, presentation, etc.).

I agree, Retro Bird is my favorite. I also like Game Sack, SNESDrunk, Gaming Historian, Gaming Off The Grid, Classic Gaming Quarterly, and the classic CGR videos. But Retro Bird is still the best.
One of my best friends back in the day had a Dreamcast preordered for the midnight launch at an Eb Games in St. Louis. We waited in line with what felt like an eternity. They had two on display that you could play as you waited in line with SoulCaliber. Man, was I just floored at the detail of the graphics at the time. We made it back to his house around 2:00 in the morning. We hooked it up; played a couple of rounds of SoulCaliber and then he went to bed. He had a demo disc that had the first Power stone on it in addition to the pack in SoulCaliber. I stayed up until almost five am playing it. And then he got a copy of Hydro Thunder. Oh man; good times indeed.
The Dreamcast is my absolute favorite console of all time, and it was so exhillerating getting it on day 1 and experienceing its life span.
I had all of the other consoles of that generation as well (PS2, Gamecube and Xbox), but man, the Dreamcast just had such a unique lineup of all types of games, and just a special charm, that the other consoles just did not have.
None of the other 3 were as exciting to own as the Dreamcast was
I got it at Japanese launch day (at least as soon as NCSX could fulfill my order). And then I played it again at the US launch at E3 in 1999.
Man, the US launch was great. The buzz from the crowd at E3 was electric- I specifically remember the room dedicated to Sega Rally and Quake 3 online, which blew people’s minds (Quake 3 was still a recent PC game). And Soul Caliber had a lineup to play, tournament style. The whole Sega booth was crowded and people were having so much fun.
Unfortunately, it didn’t last…. And as embarrassing as they are, I wish I still had the photos I took back then - which ironically, were on one of the first digital cameras - made by Sony - the FD90..
Sadly, I sold my Japanese launch Dreamcast and all my games for cheap. I think there was even an easy mod that made it region unlocked, because I definitely remember playing a bunch of US games.
I truly love both the Gamecube and Dreamcast since I was a teen. For me back then, they were both as successful as the XBOX or PS2.
Besides all the arcade games. There are some good rpg games like skies of arcadia and grandia 2. I still remember playing them non stop during weekends until finishing them.

Every home console DREAM wanted to be Arcade quality graphically & playability. Sega was the 1st to do it the cheapest with the Dreamcast! The Arcade experience at home!
If I didn't have so many friends who owned it all ready I would have bought this console. I put in tons of hours on Crazy Taxi & Marvel vs Capcom with my buddies!
To this day I still play Crazy Taxi...it's so bonkers it's fun! You may think I'm crazy but Crazy Taxi never gets old! Aged very good, like a fine wine with a hint of crazy!
Please make more of these videos for different systems! My son loves watching your videos with me but he lives on Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, and Terraria. I would love for his mind to be opened to other systems and games.
Terraria is awesome and a very retro style game (a 2D 16bit inspired metroidvania with crafting, building and terraforming the entire level to your needs)... check it out if you havent.
The DreamCast is the only console I’ve let myself collect for that I didn’t own as a kid. A few fond memories of playing it at a friend’s house back then can be really powerful! Even to find out nowadays we were only playing the demo disc lol
those were my waiting in line to play Soulcalibur days at the arcade days, and then to get it on Dreamcast, just crazy
Had a Dreamcast when it first came out and absolutely loved it. Lots of fun arcade style games but also good single player titles like Sonic Adventure and Shenmue.

I've never had the chance to play it, but I remember being so fascinated as a child about the screens in the "memory" packs, that I think for some you could even take with you and play mini games on.
Sort of, but it was largely just a gimmick and kinda underused. The Sonic Adventure games having the virtual pet thing you put on there was kinda neat though.
@@TheJadeFist yeah, I was 13 when I started seeing the ads and such before it came out, so I was a bit less critical of things then I am today :-)
My little one is sitting under my Sega Saturn because they're both awesome and well I love weird and obscure games on it
Bought my Dreamcast about 2 months ago. I've been having a blast with it. Too bad Sega didn't continue to support it.
I think one of the best things of the DC is just how passionate the fans are who own the console in a healthy way by making new games for the console. For anyone who loves shmups, 2d action platformers, beat em ups the DC homebrew community is amazing.
So even if you can't find or afford the more official titles there's still plenty of games to enjoy.
The Dreamcast has a special place in my collection. My father bought one when it was new and finally in 2009 it became my first retro console in my own collection which I bought by myself. I am using it with a Gdemu, the Brook Adapter, the Xbox Series Controller for Racing games and an Xbox360 Hori Real Arcade Pro stick for arcade games. That is my favourite setup. When I am in a certain mood I am also using the original controller 😅
I was blessed enough to have a Dreamcast growing up... and it was pretty much used for Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 😂

Dreamcast on a VGA CRT is amazing!! 1998 console with extremely crisp 480p HD graphics (I have a vid on my channel of Hydro Thunder on CRT). It's not expensive at all either, consoles are like $70 with controller, a box of blank cd-r's $10 and a usb cd burner is $20 and now you have every Dreamcast game ever made. Or you can get a GDEMU clone disc drive for $100 and play all games from an SD card. Last year I beat Shenmue for the first time and it was an amazing experience, this year I'm playing Resident Evil Code Veronica and Shenmue II. I don't give a shit about fighting games and the community of fighting games is cringe af, call me a hater, don't care.
She’s one of my top 5 consoles. Seaman and asking him about Sony or Microsoft is epic lol. A true gem of all time!

I had a dreamcast and loved my games that i bought for it. At one point, i had 50 games all in pristine condition.
I played many hours of wwf royal rumble, sonic adventure, power stone, ready 2 rumble boxing, nfl blitz, gauntlet legends, marvel vs capcom 2, shenmue, and grandia 2
The saturn and dreamcast have made it into my top 10 consoles some amazing arcade games and unique ganes especially on the saturn so many gems left in Japan
Bangai-O is another pretty good 2d game on the system, a bit expensive though

Man, the Dreamcast was friggin amazing at the time. It was a powerhouse, and had the best arcade ports. Some of the most beautiful 2D fighters were on the Dreamcast. Marvel VS Capcom 2, SF 3: Third Strike, Capcom VS SNK 2, just to name a few.
Back when I got a Dreamcast I never complained about the controller - I just picked it up and played some games.
I mean, it's not a Jaguar Numpad or something, works perfectly fine for me and the magnetic analog stick was so forward thinking and it even can't get loose.
SEGA knew how to make quality products (most of the time :D ).
I really miss the Dreamcast. From the boot animation at startup, some excellent games, close to arcade perfection, plus I didn’t think the controller was at all bad.

You make some great points- I especially like the one about not taking things too seriously. Looking back at a lot of different games and systems (even besides Dreamcast), there's a lot to love if you're not expecting every game to be a massive, 50-hour, 10/10, game of the year.
It would have been nice to delve into non-arcadey games, though, as I suspect that those would be a bigger draw for a Dreamcast hater. (If they love arcade-style gaming already, isn't loving Dreamcast basically a given?) Maybe some RPGs, shooters, or larger-scale racing games.
Though not a whole lot of good exclusives are leaping to mind, either because of the DC's arcade emphasis, or because I don't know the console's library well enough.
I have both the Retro Fighters controller, an adapter that lets you use PS4/Switch/Xbox controllers (the one you mentioned in this video), and two official controllers. 4 player matches are covered!
For the controller there are notches at the back of the pad for to tuck the wire into so it comes out of the top and not the bottom.
Oh man, Dynamite Cop is sitting on the shelf to play with the wife at some point in the future. I feel like the Dreamcast was the true end of an era for gaming being more focused on "Fun" than something more serious like modern games.
Also fruit by the foot is still great, I always have a box of them & gushers on hand.

The bottom cord is a great idea so the wire doesn't get bent so much everytime you play. Copper can only take so many bends before it will snap apart.
Good video Bird! The Dreamcast is my all time favorite console, but I hate it's not a twin stick. I'm glad you mentioned the Brook Wingman SD. That thing is game changer! Would have liked to see you mention that you don't need to pay the high price for the DC keyboard but can purchase a $15 usb plug and play and rip through Typing of the Dead!

Two of my favorite games for "goofballs" are Dreamcast exclusives, Blue Stinger and Illbleed. The Blue Stinger characters make a cameo in Illbleed as well.
I just checked and they still make Fruit by the Foot, which means it probably easier to get into collecting that than all things Dreamcast now.

Growing up an NES fanboy, Dreamcast won me over in my teens and is still one of my favorite consoles. Tho I never tried your controller holding technique 😆 great vid!!
Did you know that in the movie Training Day, Denzel's son was playing a Dreamcast? The only movie I'm aware of having a Dreamcast in it.
I never even heard about the poor thing all those years ago. I was old. Woulda blew my mind back in the atari 2600 era.
Never hated the Dreamcast, but the controller was an absolute deal breaker. Glad now I can just plug one of those wingman converters and finally enjoy this great console.

I love how relaxed Dreamcast fans are about emulation. It's like, "Yeah, if you know how to poke around the interbutt, you can find pretty much the entire licensed library."
Yeah. I can't be bothered fiddling with the old hardware anymore. I just want to play the old games with my kids. I'm not really a collector.

I got lucky and I got the one that can play burned games with no modding needed.

I love the dreamcast controller but it always gave me blisters on my fingers from them being crammed in the tight space between the grips and the UMV housing.

i hate it, lol. i have had it since launch, too. The library never clicked with me as it was like 90% arcade and action games. I was really into narrative and gameworld games i could sink my teeth in back then and now. Sonic Adventure is still my favorite game on the console. I also hate the controller and the VMU are a PIA and wasted potential. Furthermore the DC killed Sega, a company I really loved growing up with the Genesis so i see it as just a mess of a console. Sure it had some good ideas and was ahead of the curve in many respects but the execution was just... bad. the GC,PS2 & Xbox did all of that and more and i never once looked back to the DC. I played PS1 & N64 until the Gamecube & Xbox and PC throughout it all.
I have my day one Dreamcast to this day. I have to play spider-man and Tony Hawk 1 every single year. And Virtua Tennis 1, Soul Calibur, CV'S 2... Ah, the Memories.
I always preferred the Dreamcast over the PS2, but due to its short life span here (and my lack of funds as a teen) I only really got to play a handful of games, and my father preferred the PS2 so that's what we naturally ended up having more games on.
Just got my retro setup complete after our move and have been playing some Dreamcast. I’m gonna have to try that modern controller, it looks great. I was able to save a ton of money by buying reproduction games. They’re just basic CDs without a case but they were fine. Got 10 games for like $40-50

The Dreamcast is the console that I have a great respect along with the Genesis. I never owned one, but a friend of mine did & played great games back then. This Console was ahead of its time.
I really wish they could release a mini version with 40 games with the option of adding new games without hacking with a Sega E-Shop
where anybody could purchase Dreamcast games for a low price (Even hard to find ones).

90 percent of the time I used my Dreamcast it was to play Power Stone 2 with friends. I just got one after selling my original 20 years ago, and I'm going to put a terra onion mode in it.

The dreamcast has a new game coming out today called Driving Strikers! It’s the first new online game in over 20 years and is the first to cross play with steam!
The 3d games on dreamcast were loads of fun and the Dreamcast was easier to program for, unlike the sega Saturn.
Excellent video! I actually am a Dreamcast fan, so I'm glad others appreciate this Sega console. In fact, years after the Dreamcast era came and went, Dreamcast consoles and games were absolutely dirt cheap. I was going off to college and one of my suitemates had picked up a used Dreamcast (and a few games) for almost nothing. As it turns out, the Dreamcast ended up being the most played console by my suitemates and gamer friends! We just got really into playing a lot of Soul Calibur, PowerStone, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 and other classics!

Hey RB. Hello from Oxford, England! Hahahaha! The crappy second controller! My friend had a third party second controller for his Snes. It's buttons got stuck in and the D - pad was actually at a diagonal angle instead of being straight! Trying to play Streetfighter and Mortal Kombat was rage inducing with that thing. We had to compromise and the winner got to have the best controller but it was almost impossible to win with that substandard lump of garbage! 😁
I happily threw away my memory cards when I got my DC modded by Stoneage Gamer.
Then found out you still need them to save the games!.
My fav console of all time. I owned maybe a dozen games (no fighters) but loved sonic, crazy taxi and my favorite game of all time shenmue. I love the vibrant colors the games had. Not a huge library like ps2 but what was there was awesome ! A console ahead of its time and gone too soon.
Forgot to mention I did have a demo of dead or alive 2, my sister used to kick my butt at it. And she is no gamer! 😂 chu chu rocket was fun with her too.

The fact that at one point these were 39.99 at EB games before it was gamestop and you were like who needs that I got a ps2 and ir gamecube. And the games were cheap too. Yep I should have bought one in 2003 or 04 what ever years it was. Anyone else remember seei used dreamcast at that price at EB games?
I STILL love the Dreamcast even though I pretty much "retired" from fighting games on every platform. Alot of the 3D stuff just feels like what I remember of the Arcade I used to go to.
I love Dreamcast, I barely got to try it as a kid as I didn't get one unfortunately, but some of its games remained amazing even much later. Power Stone, Sonic Adventure, and Worms Armageddon (not an exclusive but still a fun version) stand out a lot.
yeah that might be my main complaint is that controller, the d-pad definitely doesn't do any favors for all the 2D fighters. I would definitely be curious to try out that new retro brawler controller they have now. otherwise no notes. the wife was interested in collecting for one so thinking about picking one up soon!

Dreamcast is an underrated system.
I wish I could have gone more in-depth with the Dreamcast while I had one - sadly it didn't last for very long when I had it as a kid (the console stopped powering on), but I got to try at least a handful of fun games like Power Stone and Sonic Adventure.
my thoughts are i love the dreamcast to bits as i feel its in the top 3 retro consoles of all time but i hate collecting for it so i urn almost all of my games
