Dwayne McDuffie created my childhood for real. Static Shock, Justice League, and Ben 10. Ben 10 will forever be my GOATED superhero.

Same thoughts Jay, what he did for Ben 10 was something really reinvigorating and great that the fact that it got changed so drastically by the higher-ups is tragic. Because not only he emphasize on the growth of the three main kids of the previous series (Ben, Gwen and Kevin) but more so, making Ben grow and become an even better hero than how he used to learn in the previous series. And that to me, back then being a 9-year old, was something exciting.

I legit cried while watching this. Being a black kid it meant so much to me to see representation not just in media like Static but also in the industry as well. Finding out that Dwayne was black and creating work that tried to include minorities was inspiring. I honestly grew up with McDuffie as my role model

I would kill for HBO Max to do a faithful movie, miniseries, or series based on McDuffie's Milestone works. It'd honestly be something spectacular to see Icon get a series, since I became a fan of the character through Young Justice and Static was my favorite superhero growing up.

I'm a black physics student and I voraciously read Dwayne's story and anything he worked on when I was younger. Static was awesome and inspired me so much. I'm going to see if I can contact the head of the national society of black Physicists (Stephon Alexander, a comic book fan and professor at Brown) if we can do something related to Dwayne's story. Professor Alexander was aware of the Black Panther character being a Physicist bc he's a comic fan like the rest of us and even got Chadwick boseman to agree to sign merch for us at NSBP but unfortunately Boseman passed before it was possible.

I know I'm late for the video, but I need to make it clear how much McDuffie has influenced me. I'm currently going through several personal blocks for my personal goal. McDuffie was one of the heroes who made me want to create stories and study storytelling and script production. I know that my problems are big and that I will hardly grow in the area, especially since I am leaving my country, Brazil, to risk this. But I hope I at least have a pleasurable try. Everything I've done and will do has the vein he created. I can never say thank you to him, but I hope I can at least express my gratitude to him and many others to the public.

I grew up with the Ben 10 series, enjoying all of them, but Alien Force being the one I remembered first since I was pretty young during the original series. I didn't know about Dwayne until after his death, and didn't really know until later all the work he'd been doing behind the scenes to create the best work he could for not only kids like me, but anyone who enjoyed good stories rooted in truth. Growing up, having watched Static, the Ben 10 franchise, Justice League, I can't even express my gratefulness and sheer awe of him. His work and influence helped to established my love for comics and storytelling and having characters like Icon and Rocket just be people was something so refreshing that I didn't know I needed it. I pray to God that Dwayne is resting in peace and I thank every single person making sure to continue his legacy by creating stories by and for everyone.

Thank you for making this. I already respected Dwayne McDuffie a lot for his work in the DCAU and Ben 10(Alien Force is my favorite), but I had no idea about so much of his life and career. Some of the things he had to say about writing and creating characters really spoke to me, and as somewhat of an aspiring writer, I know I’ll take them to heart in the future. It is important to see ourselves in the characters we read about and I’m glad he was able to create so many great ones and improve so many others. But, this documentary just increased the respect I have for him by 1000. And also reminds me why I focus on acting and not writing 😂
I never would have guessed the Prisoner episode (one of the few Ben 10 episodes I actually remember watching as I wasn't as into it as JL and the other DC shows) was a direct attack of Guantanamo Bay. Amazing.

Wonderful video! I watched the DCAU when I was a kid, but decided to binge through the whole DCAU last year. I appreciated it much more afterwards. I learned about Dwayne McDuffie while looking up info about the episodes of JLU and Static Shock that I watched wanted to learn more about him. Your video about him is excellent. He was such an amazing person and you did a great job discussing his life, work, and impact. I agree that his legacy will live on. There was a quote I heard once from the show Person of Interest about how if someone loved someone or made a difference in someone else's life, they live on past their death through their impacts and the difference they made. I think this applies to Dwayne McDuffie.
Creative writing and drawing are two of my passions and this video resonated with me. Excellent work again. Kudos.

He went to the same school I went to and I can definitely see how it reflected his work. It is by far the most relaxed and open school I've seen. It even had a class dedicated to comics and cartoons, and we even had a day where we learned about McDuffie and his work. Apparently he also used to come and speak to the school often, but when I was in school he had already passed.

Dwayne McDuffie is an excellent example of being hired on content of character, compared to Tahanisi Coats, or whatever the name is, being hired on color of skin.

Excellent documentary, guys. I'm proud that you made use of my interview with Dwayne, which I realize as I'm writing this is 10 years old since publication and 15 years old since he and I actually sat down at his apartment to do it. I desperately wish I'd kept the recorder going after the interview was officially "over"; we talked for another hour and a half about all sorts of things. Amongst his many other gifts, he was one of the most fascinating conversationalists I've ever known. I still miss him.

@@mattiesavannahpahl9934 No worries! Yes, I conducted the interview that was put up on Toon Zone. And I can absolutely confirm that Dwayne was a blast to converse with. The [laughter] and [debilitating laughter] tags throughout the interview can attest to that. There are bits that I wish translated better in text than they would have 'twere it on video or audio, like Dwayne's brief imitation of a neurotic villain getting annoyed with the Flash, or him miming a weaksauce gunshot wound. :D

As a black comic artist and fan, its so strange how fans today will criticize Diversity and real world themes of race and representation, then claim to be static and Mcduffie fans. Goes to show how so many people lack self-awareness.

one of my favorite comic creators and cartoon writers! definitely defined a lot of the media I grew up with (Static Shock, JL/JLU, Ben 10 Alien Force/Ultimate Alien.) He was gone too soon but his work will continue to affect the people who grew up with it and will continue to watch and read it.
