Don't we all agree that the euphonium is the best and the most beautiful, underrated instrument ever? As a euphonium player, this is the easiest and the best instrument ever to play! P.S. I played clarinet for a few weeks before switching!
I tried playing the trumpet first but then I switched to the euphonium and it was so much better to play! It was only for one year but it would be nice to pick it up again.
I was also origionaly a trumpet player from the end of my 7th grade year to like November of my 8th grade year. But then I tried French horn and I love it. (I also picked up bass clarinet I love that one too) but I didn’t drop trumpet completely but I only play it in jazz band.
It's not easy to make a consistently engaging 23+ minute video on any instrument in any genre of music. Easily one of the most interesting, easy to understand instrument demonstrations I have seen. Incredibly well executed. Keep them coming!
Thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching! We're so happy to hear that people value these films. We will keep them coming - make sure to subscribe so that you can receive the next one.
I started playing baritone in 8th grade (quite a few years ago) and have been playing euphonium since high school. It’s a beautiful instrument! I wish it were a mainstay in the orchestra. 😢. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation! Your information was interesting and your style and delivery were clear and engaging. Well done!!!
a big hear hear to that. clear and concise and drew me right in. every question i started to think of, like the pieces and construction of the instrument, he answered it immediately ir demoed it for us.
After I saw this was 23 minutes long I said: Pff, this is going to be boring.... Still here I am 23:41 minutes later saying: What? Is it over?? Cheers on a very interesting video!
I started out on the trombone, but then there was one of those kids who was born in a music family and played all of the instruments. He picked up the school's euphonium and started playing it. I asked "what is that?" He answered and told me it was a euphonium. I got to try it, and it was really fun. I wanted to play euphonium. I don't know how my parents were okay with this, but they got me a euphonium for my birthday. That was a fateful day. Skip forward to high school (when I actually get to play it). I join the wind ensemble for trombone, but at the end of my sophomore year, I switched to euphonium. That was the best music-related decision I made in my life. Junior year was just me getting better while playing tough things on euphonium. Senior year, I was really serious about euphonium and got into some honor bands. I just love the instrument. If I ever started up a professional symphony orchestra, I'd have a euphonium player. I don't want to be a conductor though. I am going to be a composer. ...okay, now it's time to count up how many times the word 'I' and the word 'euphonium' were mentioned. Whoever is right gets the satisfaction of being right.
Thank you SO MUCH for definitively, comprehensively and FANTASTICALLY answering the age old question "What is a Euphonium?!?" Even after playing the Euphonium for over 25 years, this video still proved interesting and informative! And THANK YOU for showing this as an instrument that stands alone and requires a mastery outside of being a simple niche orchestral instrument.
Amazing! I am also a trombonist, who loves to play the euphonium, but mostly because it has the coolest passages in a wind orchestra! I love how the instrument is getting more and more popular nowadays, because of videos like this!!!
I was a teenager eupho player in a brass band,. I've just learnt an almost embarrassing amount of fundamental facts about this instrument for the first time. Great video, wish I'd seen it 30 years ago!
I have been waiting for so long for this video to happen! As a euphonium player in high school and an avid orchestral music lover, I have struggled for years not being able to have a future in this instrument and having to switch to being a trombone player. This video makes me hopeful that though very few prior literature will be available for euphonium players, it will inspire this next generation of composers to write for the instrument, so that we too can be recognized and appreciated, so long as conductors aren't always stuck in the past. Thank you.
Thank you for your thoughts and best of luck with your euphonium and trombone journeys. We're so happy to hear that you found this film inspiring - and we, too, hope it will be inspiring for composers.
Several thoughts: I've been playing euph for 50+ years, with some time on tuba as well. I have two euphs - a 4 value King and a 5 (!) valve Besson. Encountered a girl at a middle school concert a few years ago carrying a big case. "Baritone?" I asked. "No," she replied proudly, "euphonium!" When I told her I played, she said I was the 1st euph player she'd ever met. Wish some mention had been made of Holst's 2nd Suite in F. Very famous euph solo. And finally, uphs are great jazz instruments. Check out Gus Mancuso and Tom Ball.
The question that should be asked is very simple, "When a euphonium is called for, why is not a first class euphonium player brought in to play this magnificent intstrument Too many orchestral conductors will even replace a euphonium for some lesser horn even though the euphonium is written is as the instrument to be played. There are now 242 orchestral pieces written calling for the euphonium Conductors need to be educated about this wonderful horn and must do the horn justice by having a first class player play the euphonium when the composer calls for it. This presentation was quite helpful and instructive. Thanks
Former Baritone and Tuba player here. I never had a chance to try euphonium. I do love the warmth of the instrument. This is one of the best descriptions I've run across of the working of the valves in a brass instrument. Your unassuming attitude facing the camera creates an atmosphere a relaxed learning which I love. Thank you for this delightful lesson. Keep up the good work, and God bless!
I wish, in the 10 years of school I played this instrument, that literally anyone had explained to me the mechanical purposes of the tubing and the valves in this detail. Amazing video, thank you for making it and sharing it. Cudos to Byron Fulcher in particular, excellently presented. His expert knowledge of the instrument's history was so colorful.
I've been waiting for you guys to make a video on this beautiful instrument for so long. So happy to see this! The Euphonium has been an underappreciated instrument for too long.
Thank you so much. My son began learning the euphonium yesterday and has not been able to get off it since. I can't wait to show him this video tonight!
Thank you for the wonderful video. I hope some youngsters take up playing it is so rewarding. Played myself for over 30 years slide and valve made friends for life. Fantastic 😊👍
Dear Mr. Fulcher, I first got to know you when I was a young classical composer at the age of 17, often referring to Andrew Hugill user's manual to the orchestra from 2005, which I still refer to today. And here I am, 15 years later, still learning more and more from you. Always so pleasing. So good to see you. Until I e-meet you again, thank you and be well!
The solo in Bydlo was originally for tuba. Specifically, a French high C tuba a major second higher than the Euphonium. It also had 6 valves. 1, 2, 4, and 5 (flat half-step) are all normal. 3 is usually 'long' lowering pitch a major third. The 6th valve is the same as 1+4, a perfect fifth.
so many happy memories playing in the school brass band in the 90s and then studying a level, not just playing this wonderful instrument, but the cameraderie that only a performer is lucky enough to experience and realise. thanks for this fabulous video
Thank you for an entertaining and educational video! My 13 year old daughter is in love with her euphonium, but like many players is frustrated at its relative lack of presence in the orchestral repertoire. I'm a trombonist and have had to borrow her school instrument to play parts in my community band, but since I was never taught the instrument, I too struggle with fingering quickly. I appreciate that the beauty of the instrument can only inspire composers to increase its visibility in future compositions. And hopefully older pieces will have adequate transcriptions to incorporate this instrument.
I meet the Euphonium because of the anime Hibike Euphinium, immediately caught my attention how diferent the sound was, it never occurs to me to search a video about the instrument, and i love it even more, i kinda expect it was a bit more tricky to play
Thank you so much Philharmonia Orchestra!! Personally I am a euphonium player primarily and seeing that this instrument is included in the education videos of these instruments really feels amazing to sit down and see that it is being done justice here in this orchestra, since I have felt as though they haven't been acknowledged in the right way until I seen this video. Thank you so much for that.
Thank you for the lovely feedback! We're thrilled this has been meaningful to you. Thanks for watching, and please do subscribe to keep up with the new instrument films, and other films we have coming out in our 18/19 season and beyond.
American march music often features the euphonium as a solo instrument for the "B" section. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting and hearing the magnificent playing of Art Lehman when I was a lowly woodwind player in my high school wind band. We played a lot of classic marches and my best friend was our "euph" player. Art's tone and technique were flawless and very beautiful. He was very encouraging of our music!Enjoyed your video.
I really enjoyed this player and was extremely engaged in everything he said, it may just be because I’m a euphonium player but I absolutely think this is the best video out of them all with the featured instrument aside
I used to play the euphonium in 'my' wind band which was named, of course, after St. Caecilia. Beautiful instrument, lovely tone/timbre. Only now I realise that it matches the sort of voice that I have. Thanks for this very informative video!
I just wanted to hear the instrument played a little bit and wound up listening to the whole video- EXCELLENT- and I've some experience playing a difficult instrument- I played the bass baritone clarinet in our orchestra in jr high and church- I wish I had stayed with it- aww hindsight lol
I wrote a baritone solo for a friend of mine in high school in 1963, a theme and variations; I still have it, in Eb. However my friend George died after the Vietnam War, and ever since I have loved the Baritone/Euphonium. I never published it, but he played it very well, and won a prize with it in a solo contest back in those years. George also played the bassoon in the orchestra and I played the cello. Thanks for this lovely demo. It brought back some lovely memories for me.
I was a euphonium player in high school here in the US. In college I majored in trombone. I had a Bossey Hawkes compensating euphonium but I never understood what that meant until today. Thank you.
The euphonium is my favourite brass instrument to compose for. My Symphony No. 1 in D Minor has a brass section of only Euphonium. I did that because that was what I had to work with, and it was marvelous. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you.
I'm in absolute awe at the knowledge of these P.O. musicians. I'm absolutely captivated by the science behind how this amazing instrument functions. Now, having just watched three of the P.O videos, I am absolutely addicted to watching them all. This is professional music and expertise at it's highest standard. Again, a really knowledgeable presenting musician that makes the discovery of this instrument interesting. Wow.
My band director who was a truly great bop musician loved to improvise on his battered rotary valve Euphonium. Very harmonically advanced playing. He was a bone player.
I played this wonderful horn in HS in the 70’s. The band director was all about military style so the parts for euphonium were great. We were good and went out of state for marching competitions. The town couldn’t have cared less. We won at one of those contest and it was only about forty miles away. I think there were three moms there to see it. Band and the learning of music are the only things I miss about those years.
Thank you for this great video. I play a Mahilion (Belgium) euphonium from around 1930 for around 45 years now as my main instrument and loving it more and more. As autodidact and woman, making free improvised music, it wasn't always easy, but it gives me increasing satisfaction! ❤
wonderful, reminds me of my brother playing, his euph is back from the shop anytime now after a total overhaul and will sound exceptionally warm over Christmas.
The euphonium is such a beauty. It really deserves its name. What an insightful video about this wonderful instrument. And by the way, airs variés is French and the é has to be pronounced because of the accent. Variés is pronounced a bit like vary-ey. I can't tell you how the correct French pronunciation sounds but this is as close as I can write it.
Thanks, this video is a very complete information about brass instruments and their use and a joy to watch - for fresh or experienced brass players and or persons who like to know how brass instruments are working physically
This was great. I love how you go more in depth than in the older videos (which also were great). You should make more videos like this for more uncommon orchestral instruments, or maybe even update some of the older ones. Just great!
Wow, what an enlightening video... Explained so many aspects of the brass section in such a lucid manner that even a musically illiterate person like me could comprehend each and every word you spoke. Thank you so much.
Beautifully played and explained. This video is coming at the right time, just as I was about to buy an euphonium and did not know whether to buy the 3 valve model or the 4 valve model.thanks once again
@@philharmonia_orchestra I always loved the Euphonium since it was the bridge between a tuba (bass) and the trumpet (soprano). Never got around to buying one since it occupies si much space. Anyway ordered a 4 valve model yesterday. Will be playing at a Wedding in church next month.
This is a great video. Wish I'd had a similar explanation of the mechanics of the instrument when I was starting out on the trumpet. Really nicely done!
Yay! Always been a fan of these. Have you guys considered doing a video on the Alto Flute, that would be awesome I’m sure a lot of people would appreciate that! :)
Hi I'm a trumpet player and I just got a euphonium because we just got a free acoustic piano (needs some work) and the person who dropped it off said "do you want a new brass instrument " (since he had no idea what it was) and dropped it off at my house
This is an excellent discussion of the euphonium's role in orchestral music, and it makes reference to the British brass band tradition as well. In addition, the euphonium is often featured in the music of European and American wind ensembles, which include woodwinds (unlike brass bands). For example, in this march by the Czech composer Karol Pádivý, notice how the euphoniums have a rich, singing countermelody on the second presentation of the first strain. Then, in the Trio section, the euphoniums play the theme on the first presentation, and when the theme is taken up by the woodwinds in the repetition, the euphoniums have an achingly lovely countermelody, which they repeat (joined by the trombones) for the final recapitulation. ruclips.net/video/Ekigzp6khqQ/видео.html

Byron Fulcher you not only play extremely well but you are spot on as a teacher. Thank you for this. I was given a euphonium. A second-hand shop. Owner and friend of mine was planning to hang it on her wall as a decoration. Ha ha! She kindly said if you will learn to play it you may have it! Thank you sir for such succinct description of valve effect on interval change, the note of the lip buzz matching the horn note desired, phonetics, and history. Well done! Like and subscribe. Video saved for future reference.
Really great and informative teaching. We started watching from a random comment by my partner that she’d briefly played the euphonium at school. Ended up watching the whole lot. Thanks Byron.
What a thoroughly enjoyable video. I play sax and clarinet but never gave much thought about how they work. Too many keys. But here sound comes visually alive. The mute part at 11:40 was quite a kick. God bless Maurice Ravel at 12:35. He explored the full scope of what music can do. Loved the “tenor tuba” show. Thanks!!
I absolutely adore the euphonium! My favourite instrument, its sound is so warm and touches my soul, almost. Especially after watching Hibike! Euphonium
Thanks so much for this series! I've already watched the whole series, including the tabla and sarod videos. I would be so excited to know that there are new videos in the way. I really loved the in-depht technical explanations of the instrument, the summary in the video description and of course the musical examples. For an aspiring composer like me, it's very enlightening to know the instrument's range, a bit of history, and all the involved techniques and ways of playing it. Thanks so much, looking forward!
As a euphonium player, one peculiar thing I have noticed is that it's part is often written more with the woodwinds than the brass, and in a similar way to the horn in F meshing well with the saxophone I find it works well with the clarinet especially
Thank you for watching! Please subscribe to our channel to receive our new releases straight to your inbox. There is a new instrument film coming out this spring.
What a great intro to the Euphonium! I learned a great deal even though I played the instrument for 5 years in my youth and have recently taken it up again.
I love the euphonium it's like a brass cello, expressive and warm. Shout out to all Euphonium players
The euphonium is not nearly as buzzy as the cello. The real brass cello is yet another instrument invented by Adolphe Sax. No, not the bass clarinet, but rather the saxophone. Sax intended for the bass saxophone to be an adjunct to the cello.
Woot woot!!! Shout out right back!
Yeah a euphonium is usually a mediator between tubas trombones and trumpets, but it makes a great solo instrument
Euphonium is best instrument and that’s why I play it
I just started playing it like 3 days ago and i eecently started base cleff i only know F and D and B flat
ABOUT DAMN TIME WE GOT RECOGNIZED
YES!
Fr tho
on god
legit only reason i get recognized is cuz im good, and band teachers like good job, did you practice that? lol
Max Ramos hell yes
Don't we all agree that the euphonium is the best and the most beautiful, underrated instrument ever? As a euphonium player, this is the easiest and the best instrument ever to play!

Same!
LOL
Bro same it was so fast
And we need to get actual euphonium players in the Orcehstra
The euphonium really should've been added to the standard symphony orchestra.
@@wyattwahlgren8883 Wasn't at my high school. Really sad cause I felt forgotten with the saxes
The reason they aren't in the orchestra normally is because there isn't anything special about the euphonium that the trombone can't do.
there’s a “tenor tuba” in the Planets suite by Holst i believe
At my school, there are only 2 euphoniums me and my friend Steven

I love playing both

My life in a nutshell xD I had unto this day only one person who asked and knew, shout out to that lad! :D

Great thanks to Byron for this introduction, it's more than just about euphonium.

Good to hear - thanks for the feedback and thank you for watching!
I was a euphonium player in high school here in the US. In college I majored in trombone. I had a Bossey Hawkes compensating euphonium but I never understood what that meant until today. Thank you.
You're welcome!
The euphonium is my favourite brass instrument to compose for. My Symphony No. 1 in D Minor has a brass section of only Euphonium. I did that because that was what I had to work with, and it was marvelous. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you.
Very nice instrument and very interesting explanation! Thank you very much Maestro!
Thanks a million for this wonderful video. very informative. Byron keeps saying that he is not a Euphonium player, but he plays beautifully.
I attended a masterclass that Byron led a few weeks ago - he’s an incredible musician and trombonist!
We agree. Lovely that you got to hear Byron in a masterclass.
Wow.
Thank you for this wonderful feedback.
What an amazing and incredible musician!! That's a real Pro!!
We agree!
Thank you for this presentation, Mr. Fulcher!
A beautiful warm timbre, and your hugs are returned.
This is one of the best euphonium sounds I have ever heard
Wow, this is one of the most in depth of the instruments videos, you truly excelled, good job!
Thank you!
My band director who was a truly great bop musician loved to improvise on his battered rotary valve Euphonium. Very harmonically advanced playing. He was a bone player.
Excellent video. One of the best I've seen describing an instrument in general. Well done.
Wow, thank you! Please subscribe to our channel if you like this sort of thing!
Have you ever heard a Bass Clarinet- Euphonium Duet. I guarantee its going to be one of the sweetest sounds that you will ever hear 😍🤩
wonderful, reminds me of my brother playing, his euph is back from the shop anytime now after a total overhaul and will sound exceptionally warm over Christmas.
Fantastic video - Explains very well how valves and the compensative system (which I previously never fully understood) work.
Thanks for the feedback, and for spending time on our channel!
I've been playing the basflügelhorn for 20 years. Learned so much from this video that I never new.
That's great to hear! Thank you for spending time on the channel.
XS N8ION ai basfligel Horn player and euphonium player here! In Romania we spell it basfilgel Horn
Always nice to see a fellow Cornishman
Finally Euphoniums got some attention, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
Just great!
Thank you! We're glad to hear you appreciate the depth of this video.
Wow, what an enlightening video... Explained so many aspects of the brass section in such a lucid manner that even a musically illiterate person like me could comprehend each and every word you spoke. Thank you so much.
You have covered the master of all instruments. Your work is now complete.
Stay tuned - there will be more!
Beautifully played and explained. This video is coming at the right time, just as I was about to buy an euphonium and did not know whether to buy the 3 valve model or the 4 valve model.thanks once again
Best of luck with your euphonium journey! We're very glad we could be of help.
Euphonium - Ευφώνιο = εύ + φωνή ( Καλή + φωνή ) = Good, nice, well... + voice! !!!!

i speak greak that’s phonetics ;)
I started playing baritone in 8th grade (quite a few years ago) and have been playing euphonium since high school. It’s a beautiful instrument! I wish it were a mainstay in the orchestra. 😢. I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation! Your information was interesting and your style and delivery were clear and engaging. Well done!!!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
One of the most enjoyable 24 minutes I got to spend over the past 14 months. Chapeau Sir, and my most sincere thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I finally understand how brass instruments work! Thanks for the super relaxed and interesting explanation and demo!
My newest favorite instrument!
Underrated instrument! I already play trompet and I’m interesting to buy one euphonium! Thx for the video
A beautiful instrument, warm and comforting.
Really great and informative teaching. We started watching from a random comment by my partner that she’d briefly played the euphonium at school. Ended up watching the whole lot. Thanks Byron.
It's a great exposicion to the instrument!!!!!! Sounds great and you play very nice.
Thank you! We're so glad you like it. Thank you for watching.
Thanks!!
I’m doing this for school and I love the sound of this mans voice
Thank you. This is the most comprehensive video available.
Thank you for watching! Please subscribe to keep up with all of our releases.
This one is a gem! And such a great and humble player and demonstrator. Hats off to you, sir, and thank you all for such a great video!
Thank you. We're so glad you enjoyed it!
@@philharmonia_orchestra I'm enjoying all of them :) I still have a few more to watch, but keep them coming when convenient :)
Thank you for the positive feedback. We will be releasing another two this spring/summer and hope to keep making new ones when we can.
Perfect explanation of valves and compensated system! 👏
Awesome! Thanks for the video. Very interesting!
Thank you for watching!
As a euphonium player, one peculiar thing I have noticed is that it's part is often written more with the woodwinds than the brass, and in a similar way to the horn in F meshing well with the saxophone I find it works well with the clarinet especially
Wonderful. A great history, description, and tutoring on euphonium.
I played this instrument from aged 7 to 13, it was such a wonderful thing to play
Such a splendid presentation ! Hats off!
Thank you for watching! Please subscribe to our channel to receive our new releases straight to your inbox. There is a new instrument film coming out this spring.
What a great intro to the Euphonium! I learned a great deal even though I played the instrument for 5 years in my youth and have recently taken it up again.
Excellent overview tutorial. It held me from start to finish.
