+Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) Not enough people share info. about the strings being used outside of guitar/bass guitar videos. Thank you very much.
Aidan Phillips Remember, his bass has an extension. That makes the lowest string go down all the way to a low "C". So that technically makes the tuning C-A-D-G.
@@philharmonia_orchestra Why can't the Double Bass also be tuned in Fifths? Of coruse there is a way to tune the Double Bass in fifths because Pirastro makes strings designed for that very tuning. The Strings are Obligato 5ths tuned Double Bass Strings and they also make a single High E String that's suitable for 5 String Double Basses. Red Mitchell was known for reviving Fifths tuning on a Double Bass so he can come up with very clever arrangements. Fifths tuning for Bass might allow the Basses to resonate with the other members of the Violin family a little more. Another advantage to using 5ths tuning on a Double Bass is that especially with a 5 String Double Bass tuned C, G, D, A, E the Bassist could also transcribe Violin Concertos for 5ths tuned Double Bass w/o having to transpose the solo Violin part cause it'll sound 2 Octaves lower than written in Treble Clef when playing Solo Violin pieces. For example I want to get a 5 String Double Bass and tune it in Fifths (C, G, D, A, E) which is the same tuning as a 5 String Violin but 2 Octaves lower, so I could arrange Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto for Double Bass.

I'm a 1st violin player in youth orchestra, and I'm the one who thinks that cello and the bass(including Bassoon familiy and Low-Brass family) are the core of the entire orchestra. I really love how those sound :)
I love these videos because they're so down to earth and offer a great sense of not only how the instruments sound, but the history of the instruments as well as how they fit in with the orchestra. I do have one question that has bothered me for quite a while, why is it that saxophones are less likely to appear in Symphonies and Orchestras. If someone could fill me in on that I'd be very grateful. ;) (I play the alto, baritone, and soprillo saxophones)
Ginger5010, thank you for your wonderful feedback! In regards to your question about the saxophone in the orchestra, when compared to most orchestral instruments the saxophone is a relatively new instrument and therefore, there are less classical scores written that include it. That's not to say there aren't some brilliant compositions featuring the saxophone. Claude Debussy - Rhapsody for Saxophone and Orchestra - ruclips.net/video/e_ikPiMRxRE/видео.html

Just started playing the upright bass. Caught a sale on a brand new well built, good sounding Chinese laminate starter bass kit for less than $700! Even talked the guy into throwing in an old "Rubank Elementary Method for String Bass", 1937 edition. It's not a German built, old master's instrument handed down from generations, and costing $30 grand, but It'll serve my purposes very well. It's like anything else you invest at the level of your interest and goals. I don't intend to be the principal bassist in a philharmonic. I just want to anchor an accoustic jazz trio or quartet. I should be good to go in another week or so....uhh, yeah...[Laffin'😁]

I don't think the double bass is the most popular instrument in the orchestra as I'm the only one in my school who plays it. It's so much pressure being the only one but great fun.
Yes I feel your pain (and joy) I am the only one in my school orchestra and I went to an orchestral weekend for my county and I was still the only one! Luckily in another bigger one I went to there were 2 others otherwise I would've died as the pieces were really hard

Brilliant video...I myself play the bass guitar and have never really delved into classical music, having only really played heavy metal and prog rock. I have however always been interested in the concept of orchestral music and hopefully will have an attempt at the double bass one day!! :-)
Galahad 99751 I began to play guitar and bass because my dad and I are huge fans of classic and prog rock, he's a drummer and I wanted to learn how to play some of our favorite songs. There's so many ways to play it from orchestra arrangements to jazz and folk. But I just wanted to encourage you to look into some exterior genres that may contain the double bass as another bassist who is also a fan of prog rock (:
I'm 13 and have played the double bass for four years. I've been getting more into the professional world of bass playing (playing in the junior section of my local conservatory) so this was very interesting.

started playing the double bass a few months ago. I enjoy the experience quite a bit, before i started playing the double bass, i played the violin for 3 years but i hated it, and now, i can truly say, i enjoy my instrument, this video was a great watch, it's the 3rd time i've come back to watch it, the first time when i watched it was my first week of double bass. So far it's been the best few months of my life, being surrounded by musicians that have the same interests as me is just truly amazing.
Thanks! I have a important test in orchestra tomorrow... I'm only in beginning orchestra and I play bass. But, if i fail the test I cant perform :( but, thanks for this video.
I've never even seen one in person nor am I a big fan of classical music, but I couldn't stop myself from watching the entire video. Very informative. Thanks!
I am sketching a piece for the double bass; I am surfing by and continuing with my research on this lovely instruments thanks, a great introduction, and very apt piece showcasing a small bit of what the double base is capable of. A solo Sonata must utilise as much as possible of a solo instrument's strength, both of articulation and expression. The instrument must be given the part of a great opera singer.
I just play electric bass and to quite a (very) modest level. How you guys play double bass with it's absence of frets and even markings of where they would be amazes me. It's all about dedication I suppose and I'm just a Jack of many trades
Hauling a bass on the subway must be a million times more annoying than hauling it outside a room into a hallway. Also, i play the Bass at school and one day a student walked by and said to their friend, "Hey! Thats a viola!" And i replied, "No, its a double bass"
dal minuto 6:23 alla fine abbiamo un bellissimo esempio di pura poesia, infatti Verdi lo era e Michael Fuller l'ha capito perfettamente. Complimenti con tanta emozione!
This episode was great! I put in one year in 9th grade (USA) playing (the only) bass with a student orchestra. I didn't know anything about anything until one day the school music director came up to me in the hall at school and since I looked strong asked me if I'd like to play bass. One of the rare moments when I didn't turn something down. I started taking lessons from this fellow (Mario Trezza) and coming to rehearsals. We played mostly simple stuff that first year high school students could handle (ages 14/15). 60+ years later I know something about some things but mostly I still know nothing about anything. I did however sing choral music for many years in pretty-good ensembles. PS: the bass I played in 9th grade had a large crack in it. Money was hard to find in the suburbs in the mid-50s. Love the bass!!
The Double Bass can also be tuned in Fifths which is the same tuning as a Cello but an Octave lower (That's C, G, D, A plus a High E for the 5 String Basses). The advantage of tuning a Double Bass in Fifths (weather it's 4 or 5 Strings) is that you'll have a much more managable range going down to Low C w/o any need to use that old extension, bigger resonance, better intonation, & the Major 10th interval can be done w/o any need to shift. Joel Quarlington & Tomoya Aomori tune in Fifths cause it has better intonation. Red Mitchell was the 1'st to revive Fifths tuning for Double Bass & lots of other Bassists gave it a shot. Keep in mind students would have alot more fun learning the Double Bass if it's a 5Bass (5 String Double Bass tuned in Fifths available in every size from 4/4 to 1/32 which the 1/32 is tuned an Octave above the rest of the sizes cause 1 it has a small body, & 2 the thinner strings will be easier for tiny hands to play) because they'll have better intonation & play more in tune.
Nice, I went to see Vienna Philharmonic last year, absolutely top class but then it is Austria after all. I love double bass when it's fused with genres it's not classically associated with. Please listen to Fouk - Cat Lady
It saddens me as a Bass player on how uncommon the double bass is, yet how important it is to the Orchestra. Y=Have you ever heard an Orchestra without the Basses? It sounds completely and utterly EMPTY.
Joke's on you, they aren't used in orchestras, aka the "string section". I believe there might be one in France that an orchestra owns, but that doesn't count cause that's just one.
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) I don't know if ya know this, you can also tune a Double Bass in Fifths by using 5ths Tuning Strings (plus a High E Solo for the 5 String Models) because 5ths Tuning has much better intonation.
Hey everyone, if you like this video, please subscribe to our channel to find out when we release the next one. We have another instrument film release this summer!
Thanks have subscribed. As a church musician with a life long interest in the orchestra I have thoroughly enjoyed the series. It gives me a new respect and admiration for other instruments I may never have considered. This series is suitable for all ages and levels of accomplishment whether a complete beginner or more experience musician.
The term "string bass" is most often used in wind bands to differentiate it from the tuba, which may also be referred to as a "bass" in these ensembles.
4:33 Many years ago I remember watching a TV show in America called Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers where the protagonist, a concert bass player, was shown hauling his bass violin around the city (Boston?) during the show's opening. I could empathize with you guys somewhat since at that time I played baritone horn in my 5th grade band and had to carry my instrument 3 blocks from my home to school twice a week.
What is life? I just played berlioz for my orchestra concert today, and I accidentally come across this video. And coincidentially, I hear the Berlioz fourth movement play as the intro. Lol
It's a giant, fretless viol; however, some people argue for a violin heritage. It's neither, but an interesting instrument, regardless. Yes, I play bass.
***** Double bassists have a choice of synthetic core, steel core or gut strings (typically used for early music performances). Whether/how the strings are wound depends on the manufacturer, but flatwound strings are more commonly found on electric basses than orchestral double basses.
@Scott Boyd--Above I saw the following comment and copied it for you: For those who are wondering what strings Michael uses, here you go: low C- Thomastik Bel Canto A- Pirastro Original Flexocor D- Pirastro Original Flexocor G- Thomastik Bel Canto
The double bass is not really the largest and deepest sounding string instrument. There is a larger one that is also the very deep, but it is too large to use(about 2meters tall) The Octobasse It does a C0 which is about 16hz.

Nathaneal Horton What's a "douch"
apollo He means a "douche". It's an insult.
@voilaviolamh Your Latin American friends need to learn their own language and the difference between American and Americano.
@@okeen5265 Excuse you, kind sir? That's a bit rude of you to say.
My great grandfather played one of these in a swing band in the 1930s and 40s, I'm trying to learn myself :)
Wow, that's really cool!
Thank you so much for making this video!I've been playing electric in school band for a while, and just recently got into Upright or Double bass!
jaydude311 Thank YOU for watching, and for the positive feedback. Best of luck with your studies on the double bass. Enjoy!
So how's it going with the bass?
started playing the double bass a few months ago. So far it's been the best few months of my life, being surrounded by musicians that have the same interests as me is just truly amazing.
can't get enough of these vids! they really help for my studies. thank you.
In Argentina, some Double Bass players used both Arco and Pizzicato, especially, in playing Tango, they also used syncopation ("Síncopa").
Thanks! I have a important test in orchestra tomorrow... I'm only in beginning orchestra and I play bass. But, if i fail the test I cant perform :( but, thanks for this video.
+tenisha martin Thanks for watching! And good luck with your test!
+tenisha martin And? How was it? ^^
+UltimateRaven41 I was wondering the same thing! I hope they did good!
How did it go?
I've never even seen one in person nor am I a big fan of classical music, but I couldn't stop myself from watching the entire video. Very informative. Thanks!
You're very welcome. We're so glad you enjoyed this. Please do subscribe to keep up with all of our releases!
Well they had lots and lots of experience playing it. So it's about practicing frequently especially with your ears for fretless instruments
Gosh I love the name "Bull Fiddle". Just too awesome!
One of my nephews plays double bass and I thank you for this video!
I play regular bass and guitar, and through the entire video I was like "HOW DOES HE PLAY WITHOUT FRETS?"
LOL
Yeah...that is the struggle of playing instruments in violin family.
I know right!? XD
And this is why the violin family is the hardest to understand and learn.
You get used to it with practice, time and experience
It's so true that saying, Life without music would be a mistake (IDK who said it).
Nietzsche :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THESE! Makes it so much easier for us composers.
You're very welcome, Paula - we're so pleased they're useful!
One of the cutest instruments ever! :3
Thank you Mr. Fuller. Wonderful lesson and performance.
Who plays the bass here 👍🏻😊
ME!!
I play violin and soon to be bass next year but I'm trying to learn all wooden bridge instruments
i play the bass guitar
Yep here I am (German bow)
I'm going to in 2 years
I'm a new double bass player (Still in middle school) and this helped me learn some more about my instrument, thank you!
That's wonderful! Good luck!
It saddens me as a Bass player on how uncommon the double bass is, yet how important it is to the Orchestra. Y=Have you ever heard an Orchestra without the Basses? It sounds completely and utterly EMPTY.
true
I’ve also found when you remove the low brass it sounds off
X=It can play many styles of music like jazz
I am learning bass in my school orchestra and I love it.
Michael: The double bass is the largest and the lowest instrument in the string section.
Octobass: Buenos Dias Fuckboy
Abedin Subashi well , you are an intresting human beeing 🙃
I love to play the bass in my school
Can you do one of the pipe organ?
Already done since the first video I watched about the trumpet, almost everyday I've to watch at least one or tow. Today I watched six maybe :)
+Music Lover sorry about (TWO).
The term "string bass" is most often used in wind bands to differentiate it from the tuba, which may also be referred to as a "bass" in these ensembles.
Great video! :-) I really enjoyed it!
Love to listen the amazing sound of Double Bass... 😍😍😍
This is sooo cool! I play the double bass!
Sister and I both play double bass and love it!
im starting orchestra in a few days and im gonna be playing the double bass (@_@)
Wonderful! Have fun!
Finally someone recognizes my instrument
If I edit the comment the heart will go away so I have to reply my edits
@@lonely.toaster why does it go away?
@@jamesleodelacruz why tf would he know? Does it look like he works for youtube? Dumb question...
Thank you for kind explanation and performances!! it helps a lot
You're welcome! Thanks for watching our channel!
I have my own tuba and bass guitar, but I'm pretty sure he just convinced me to buy a double bass.
What a beauty. Lovely sound
when you're a metal drummer talking to a double bass player:
me: hey bro what'cha listen' to?
bro: double bass!
me: dude, that's hella hardcore
bro: :D
me: :D
Great, easy to follow introduction to the double bass. Would have liked to hear it's more of its use in jazz music.👍🏾
Thanks for tuning in to our channel!
that thing must expensive AF
misterassassin1990 usually around 900 to 2000 pounds

misterassassin1990 same lol

forslin 26 at first I thought you meant the weight (I'm American) I was like... uhhh
What is life? I just played berlioz for my orchestra concert today, and I accidentally come across this video. And coincidentially, I hear the Berlioz fourth movement play as the intro. Lol
I love the tone!
what kind of strings are you using?
I enjoyed this video..Thanks.. I'm a novice electric bass player and could use all the information out there
It's a giant, fretless viol; however, some people argue for a violin heritage. It's neither, but an interesting instrument, regardless. Yes, I play bass.
Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Nice job guys. I am a student and play the viola
Thanks Aaron! Excellent, we hope you're enjoying it!
I have a double bass and I love it 😊
I was playing my bass for my family and my cousin said “it’s a violin!”
Big violin
Have you ever heard a Bass clarinet-Bass Duet? It sounds absolutely *amazing!!!*
Me the first time i saw this instrument: "WHAT A GOD DAMN BIG TRUMPET".
Me now: Bass player and lover.
Awesome! Thanks for posting!
How long did this guy study bass for? He's so good
Hi! Michael started the double bass at the age of 19! You can read more about him here: www.philharmonia.co.uk/orchestra/players/17295/michael_fuller
definitely, my favorite instrument
What type of strings are used on double basses. Are they flatwound strings?
***** Double bassists have a choice of synthetic core, steel core or gut strings (typically used for early music performances). Whether/how the strings are wound depends on the manufacturer, but flatwound strings are more commonly found on electric basses than orchestral double basses.
@Scott Boyd--Above I saw the following comment and copied it for you:
For those who are wondering what strings Michael uses, here you go:
low C- Thomastik Bel Canto
A- Pirastro Original Flexocor
D- Pirastro Original Flexocor
G- Thomastik Bel Canto
Wow!! Beautiful sounds!!
The double bass is not really the largest and deepest sounding string instrument.
There is a larger one that is also the very deep, but it is too large to use(about 2meters tall)
The Octobasse
It does a C0 which is about 16hz.
+IIGrayfoxII ye, well, its an unconventional inatrumeny
I can do C0 on my Tuba it's hard not run out of air but it's possible to go lower
The standard double bass is about 2 m tall; the octobass is MUCH taller!
I found these videos about instruments and got addicted to them lol
NEW INSTRUMENT FILMS: Hi everyone! We’re about to embark on making some new instrument films and we want to hear from you! Which instruments do you want to see covered? Reply within the next week! Thanks for watching!
The excerpt from Otello brought me to tears.
I stopped hearing it at 3:40. MEEP. Oh well, great job!
+Donna Belhadj Me too!
Thank you for sharing, great content.
You should consider making a video/documentary on the Double Bass, maybe in multiple parts.
