  • The Gloam-Eyed Queen was Melina, but also Rennala and a spirit-caller snail (no, seriously).
Easily one of the most mysterious figures in Elden Ring, the Gloam-Eyed Queen led the Godskins before their defeat by Maliketh. She was even rumored to be an Empyrean--a title only shared by Marika, Malenia, Miquella, and Ranni. Yet only four items in Elden Ring directly mention a Gloam-Eyed Queen.
Now in the lore community, Melina is one of the most popular candidates for the Gloam-Eyed Queen. And I agree!
But in this video, I argue that the "Gloam-Eyed Queen" could be seen as a title, akin to Elden Lord, with Melina being just the latest incarnation. I reveal two bosses with surprisingly deep connections to the Gloam-Eyed Queen, and may have held that title prior to Melina.
Spoilers (and a dash of unhinged speculation) ahead!

The spirit caller snails also summon wolves and samurai. It could be that they're just mimicking something they've seen. The wolves that naturally once inhabited the mountaintops, the blood mad samurai from the Land of Reeds, and the godskin apostles, and perhaps their queen, whose regalia still reside in the cave.

Imo it’s still most likely (to me at least) that Melina was a child between Radagon and Marika. Children always seem to come in sets of three. Between Godfrey and Marika we have Godwyn, Morgott, and Mohg. Between Radagon and Rennala we have Ranni, Rykard, and Radahn. And between Marika and Radagon we have Melina, Malenia, and Miquella. A trio per relationship. Melina rebelled against the Erdtree as the gloam-eyed queen and was killed for it (at least her body was). Her gloam eye is the only gloam eye she has left, because the other is the quivering beast eye taken by maliketh. In fact I think her body was turned into the Godslayer Greatsword, which is pretty close to where Maliketh is in Caelid, who holds her eye. Im sure there are plenty of holes I can’t think of but to me it seems almost guaranteed that Melina is or was a gloam eyed queen

  • @puzzleheaded6195
    @puzzleheaded6195 Год назад +70

I have a whole conspiracy that attempts to bring much of this together and it starts with an item called “The Beast Eye” which we receive from Gurranq, aka Maliketh the Black Blade. I believe this eye belonged to the Gloam Eyed Queen aka Marika the Eternal.
The short version is that judging from Iji and Ranni’s dialogue, we know that when each Empyrean are chosen by their Two Fingers, they are given a shadow that will turn into a horrid curse should they ever betray the Greater Will. How do they know this? They must’ve seen it happen. The only other recorded Empyrean with a shadow in history is Marika and when she began to plot against the Greater Will(Enia mentioning her trespass), I believe Maliketh activated his kill switch and used Destined Death against her and explaining her fate when we finally meet her. It would also explain why her corpse is missing her left eye, why the eye has a claw mark, and is surrounded by Marika’s stony flesh.
Another question I asked myself is just how Maliketh was able to possess or lock away the Rune of Death if he’s just a shadowbound and not a demigod? The Rune of Death had to have a host originally and I believe Maliketh sealed that host in his Black Blade, Marika herself or maybe Melina?
This eye could very well have been passed down to some of her children as well, particularly the Empyreans. The Three Sisters:
-Melina(Smoldering Butterfly) - she reveals to have the same eye, on the same side of her face as Marika would have in the lord of frenzy ending. Her previously Golden Eye loses its color because the Golden Order is no more and Grace is gone. Also interesting to note is that her Blade of Calling has the same shotel like design similar to the Godskin Peeler.
-Malenia(Aeonion Butterfly)- obviously this is pure speculation but I think the rot that covers her eyes was an intentional creative decision to hide this very secret.
    -Miquella(Nascent Butterfly) - I’ll get to that..
-Ranni? - It’s hard to tie Ranni with being a daughter to Marika but her spirit form keeps the same eye closed as Melina. I believe Ranni’s pupil color that she never opens is Gloam and that’s basing it from Melina. I believe they keep them shut to hide their identities as Empyreans.
So how does it all connect? This is where my conspiracy really starts. Judging from Turtle Pope’s dialogue, we know that Radagon left Rennala to become second Elden Lord after his union with Queen Marika but before he left, he bequeathed the Amber Egg that she is found cradling when we meet her in-game.
Miriel claims she was left heartbroken because of his departure, but what if there is more to the story? What if instead of heartbroken, she’s actually bewitched?
Let’s look at some details on the Amber egg:
We are given dialogue from Gideon that the egg contains a Great Rune, and further progression into the game reveals it to be the The Rune of the Unborn. The rune is not revealed to be associated with any god in particular, much like the Rune of Death, but there are some interesting implications on it.
Mohgs Great rune reads - “Mohg and Morgott are twin brothers, and their Great Runes are naturally similar.”
Judging from that item description, the Rune with the most similarity to it is Malenia’s, who was Miquella’s twin. If this egg does contain the Great Rune of Miquella, possibly his soul too, then an explanation for the shape of the rune could be his curse - the “eternal childhood” - and possibly why the juveniles are imperfected and stuck as children.
This brings me to my theory. Rennala is overly attached to it, calling it her little “culver”. We know from the Bewitching Branch that Miquella had the ability to compel love and affection and if we look close, we can see traces of it inside the egg, particularly the white buds before they hatch. We know anything that’s mixed with the blood or essence of Miquella tends to stay in a premature “infant” form, hence the Haligtree being stuck as a baby version of the Erdtree and now the buds inside the egg. If Rennala encountered the moon on the mountaintops and used it to “bewitch” the academy, what prevented her from becoming bewitched herself?
Another thing to point out is the empty bird cages found all over the Raya Academy. I always wondered what the purpose of these were but then it dawned on me, there is an item in the game called “The Slumbering Egg” and it’s a crafting material needed to create items in the game that alleviate sleep. This makes me think the members of the Academy were trying to awaken Rennala from her “deep slumber” as Ranni says and at the same time, explain why the Knights of the Cuckoo marched against the Carian manor since they must’ve found out what Ranni is doing.
So why would Ranni keep Rennala in her current state and attempt to possibly reincarnate Miquella?
One theory is it’s because Miquella was in fact Ranni’s secret mentor, the Snowy Crone, and Torrent is the key to prove it, specifically his Whistle. The spectral steed whistle is made of a delicate “goldwork”, not just gold, mirroring the Item Description on the Unalloyed Needle. I didn’t think much of it at first but after seeing the flame of frenzy ending, I’ve speculated that the material is Unalloyed Gold. This is backed by the fact that the whistle is still intact after the flame of frenzy is unleashed. Gold only reacts to heat by melting and the fact that it’s burning in the ending is bizarre and means it could be rejecting the flame. We know that Miquella’s needle is made from the same stock and has the properties to ward away the effects of the flame of frenzy and rot, which both originate from outer gods.
Torrent is also partial to the Frozen Raisins which are made exclusively from the Mountaintops with his mane being pale blonde like Miquella’s but that could just be a coincidence since Radahn’s horse has red hair.
Or if you really want to go unhinged, Ranni may in fact be Miquella reincarnated. Miquella is thought to have an alter ego named St.Trina who’s gender is open to interpretation(The double helix can be seen in Miquella’s needle which depicts the symbol for mercury(Roman God), who represents intersex people). In fact, the item description in the Sword of St. Trina states that he could’ve been a boy or girl. St. Trina is heavily tied to sleep and it can’t be a coincidence that Ranni enters a deep slumber at the same time as Rogier after you get close to retrieving her curse mark. During her first appearance in the Church of Elleh, the merchant and the donkey are also both asleep and the fog that covers the area can be seen on the Trina Lily and envelops all of Liurnia.
Also, the juveniles in Rennala’s fight sing about sleep and they mention “mother’s umbra” which refers to the shadow of the moon cast by an eclipse aka the Dark Moon. Also St. Trina’s torch portrays the figure with one eye (Ranni always keeps one eye open).
Something interesting about Blaidd is that his breastplate portrays two twins with a tree between, possibly being Miquella, Malenia and the Haligtree, and the double helix from Miquella’s needle can be seen in his Royal Greatsword. Blaidd could very well solve the mystery of their Shadow since they were born at the same time, being twins. His breastplate also tells us he always hated the cold but it never snows in Liurnia? I think the fact that Ranni discarded her flesh is the reason Blaidd has been able to help Ranni wage war against the Greater Will, right up to the point where Ranni murders her Two Fingers, going mad at the end of the questline because Ranni(Miquella) is in our pocket as a miniature doll. Speaking of Unalloyed Gold, the Mask of Confidence in particular could hint towards this secret. The gold threads could be unalloyed to hide Miquella’s(Ranni) secret from the Greater Will. This would also explain Malenia’s confrontation with Radahn.
In her ending, She embraces Marika(her true mother) and vows to finish what they started which is to not be influenced by the Greater Will/Outer Gods anymore before creating a massive waygate into the Dark Moon(also explains why all the way gates smaller than our tarnished, since they were created by Miquella, a child).
Finally, Ranni does sound like a child and she looks exactly like her doll which I believe is fashioned after Miquella. If you look at the statues of Miquella, he’s always depicted with his head much larger than his body which is a trait babies have, and explaining why the “Greathood” and the Snowy Crone Hat is meant for someone with a larger head which is also a recurring theme with the Glinstone Crowns. Also, It only snows inside of Miquella’s husk in all of the Haligtree, further associating Miquella with the cold.
I know there’s Miquella’s “body” in Mohg’s palace but I believe the it’s nothing but a husk since we don’t get a Great Rune. It’s likely he bewitched Mohg, Rennala, Seluvis, Gideon, Malenia etc. Even the player(why else would our character give her a wedding ring that clearly states “don’t give this to me”).
“Oh? A dogged fellow aren’t we? Or is it thy habit to merely talk to dolls?”
(Thank you for your time if you read all of this, and sorry but it was the only way to explain the snail since they’re also found in Miquella’s Haligtree and he’s eluded to be a spirit summoner from the bell we recieve from Ranni.)

I especially love any theory/unhinged speculation about the Amber Egg, which is one of the most bewitching items in the game, both in-game and for lore hunters. One theory I came across (first from T-L-G-T-W) that could dovetail quite nicely with what you wrote above is the idea that Ranni was born from the Amber Egg and raised by Rennala as a form of brood parasitism.

The Blade of Calling is more similar to the Black Knife that the Black Knife Assassins use. Melina even uses their moveset. Even the Ash of War on the weapon is pretty much a direct copy of the Black Knife, just the Blade of Calling uses a holy projectile instead of Destined Death.
The Haligtree I believe is not fully formed because Miquella was pulled from it before he was ready. He was using his own essence to grow the tree, and to also grow himself into a true God. I believe the bird cages were for cuckoos. Marika is a sort of mother to Ranni because Radagon is Marika.

But since all 3 have vastly different views on magic, they had a falling out. (Renna likes the occult and the dark moon, while Sellen is fascinated by the Primeval Current.) That would explain why Renna was Ranni's secret mentor despite being Carian and why there aren't any other Carian princesses.

Unrelated to the main video, but I read a comment talking about the "three sisters" towers and wanted to respond to that - I think it may be a reference to the triune goddess Hecate, which represents the aspects of waxing/full/waning, or maiden, mother, and crone. Hecate is also associated with witchcraft, the moon, sorcery, necromancy, graves, night, and ghosts. In Elden Ring, I feel like this ties in heavily with Ranni (maiden), Rennala (mother), and Rennala (crone). If you look at depictions of Hecate, you may see a similarity to how Glintstone crowns appear in game, in that she is often depicted with multiple faces/heads. Hecate was associated with dogs, as she was depicted with them and some were sacrificed to her, echoing Ranni's relationship with Blaidd. Hecate was often equated/conflated with Selene, another moon goddess, who others have tied to Sellen.
I don't know what this means as far as lore goes, or if this has any bearing on interpreting the Carian family tree, just thought it was an interesting set of references.

Coming back to this, with the SOTE trailer released, I'm quite confident the gloam-eyed queen is who Marika takes the strands of hair/rune from in the trailer (after maliketh defeats her, and just before creating the erdtree).. it's definitely a godskin cloth she pulls it from. And that event - her defeat - was what led to the creation.
I almost wonder if she was her sister. And if Melina is either marked with a gloam eye in honor of her, or IS her - somehow brought back in spirit (because her body was burned) to undo Marika's rule

  • @HavocHounds1988
    @HavocHounds1988 Год назад +6

I like the theory that Marika was the Gloam Eyed Queen, and it makes some sense if she was, considering how Melina appears to become the GEQ in the Frenzied Flame ending, and Melina is somehow a daughter of Marika according to her name in the code which reads MarikaOfDaughter. The theory is that Marika was originally from what is now one of the Eternal Cities (probably Noxstella), and because of what the Greater Will did to her city she decided to work her way to become the vessel for the Elden Ring, and to then slowly destroy the Golden Order from within. And there are things in game that sort of corroborate this thought. Rogier says that the Black Knife Assassins are Scions of the Eternal City, and the Black Knife set mentions how the Black Knife Assassins are all Numen women with close ties to Marika. So this makes it seem that one if not all the Eternal Cities were once known as Numen, and were at some point banished beneath the earth.
And another piece of evidence that Marika might be connected with the Godskins is that in Farum Azula, in the room where Maliketh is fought there is a statue of what looks like a women with three wolves around her. Empyreans have half wolf shadows to guard and if needed kill their Empyrean. Though why it's three, then again Ranni has 3 wolves outside her tower as well, so the connection is still there.

Great question! If I had to guess, I'd assume it would look the most similar to the Age of the Duskborn with Fia, since they share a similar favorable outlook towards creating new life amid death. And that ending, along with the Erdleaf Flower, are the only mentions of dusk/dusky in the game.
It's also fascinating that no matter the ending you choose, you accomplish a lot of the Gloam-Eyed Queen's objectives: The Rune of Death is released and restored and anywhere between 3-7 demigods are killed.

I recently found out the leaves only fall when a shard bearer is killed or someone becomes elden lord, but I wonder if this is a reference to godwyns death. Im sure leaves fell for him in the past. The eye color of the spirit calling snail might be close to Roderika's eyes in color and Hewg mentions eye color being a feature of spirit tuners. Granted spirit tuners are different than spirit callers but probably not too different. Maybe The gloam eyed queen is the person to whom Hewg owed a great debt.

When you connect the real-world Roman mythology to its corresponding in-game characters and events, it leads us to identify:
    Empyreans = Muses/Fates
From this, we identify Melina as the Muse named ‘Memory’
Remember the Memory of Grace item? Melina and her ties to grace seem to be intrinsically tied to the MEMORY of the past, in some metaphysical sense.
The roundtable hold/the modern, golden, phantom erdtree/possibly the phantom flagposts and stuff around the outskirts of Leyndell - all MEMORIES.
So, if we just follow the Roman mythology’s family tree of Muses/Fates, this should directly correlate to the family tree of the Empyreans, right?
Well, the first generation was named Calliope.
Calliope was the original Muse. In Roman mythology, she herself represents the conjoining of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Her mythology (of her riding Pegasus up to the sun and being scorched by its heat) is a clear analogy for the creation of the Philosopher’s stone via mixing and burning the Tria Prima.
This generation is represented in-game by:
Earth = Marika = alchemical Salt
Moon = Rennala = alchemical Mercury
Sun = Radagon = alchemical Sulfur
    CUTTING TO THE CHASE:
The modern in-game story revolving around Marika, Radagon, Rennala, their family trees, and ALL their conflicts, is ALL based directly on real-world mythology, including their family trees.
This basic principle leads you to clear real-world inspirations for many of the story’s “unanswered” questions-
Who is the Gloam-Eyed Queen and where is she?
Who is the Prince of Death and where is he?
Why does the Sun seem to play a background role to the story - highly important in context, often depicted, but seldom talked about in detail?
What is the Helphen and the red grace seen by those who met their death in battle? Who are those who live in death, and why are they doing what they do?
What is the Primeval Current? (This one has a direct translation, in Latin, which explains why Lusat and Azur turned themselves to crystal)
Who were/are the Outer Gods? What were their names in Roman mythology, and from that, their family trees, associations, principles, and actions?
What was the intended purpose of the Haligtree? Who is the womanly form we see grown from the roots?
WHO is the real-world Roman mythology inspiration for Miquella? And from that, the inspiration for Unalloyed Gold needles and their opposite counterpart, St Trina’s arrows?
Why did St Trina suddenly disappear without a trace? Why did she always cover her face?
This one’s hard - why did St Trina sing the merchants a lullaby to soothe their frenzy? WHO taught her the lullaby?
From these points, we then see the damning evidence that PROVES the logical soundness of this theory: Why did Mohg kidnap Miquella and set him on the giant pelvis? This is impossible to understand without understanding the inspirations for the characters and plotline.
“In Greek mythology, Eros (UK: /ˈɪərɒs, ˈɛrɒs/, US: /ˈɛrɒs, ˈɛroʊs/;[4] Ancient Greek: Ἔρως, romanized: Érōs, lit. 'Love, Desire') is the Greek god of love and sex. His Roman counterpart was Cupid ("desire").[5] In the earliest account, he is a primordial god, while in later accounts he is described as one of the children of Aphrodite and Ares and, with some of his siblings, was one of the Erotes, a group of winged love gods.”
Starting to notice connections between Eros and Cupid? Between the Formless Mother and Miquella?
The understanding of modern in-game events also hinges on the understanding of the real-world story The Golden Ass. I could go into more detail, but it was the inspiration for:
    Godrick getting Grafted
Hoarah Loux’s death in the Badlands, and inspiration for having Serosh hang off his neck/back/head
Malenia being infected with the Scarlet Rot at her birth (intentionally by her parents)
Miquella putting the Unalloyed Gold Needle in Malenia, prompting her to suddenly become obsessed with fighting Radahn (for no clear reason, right? Well, duh - she had a golden Cupid’s arrow stuck into her flesh)
Malenia going to fight Radahn, specifically sparing the life of Godrick along the way
Malenia unleashing the Rot SPECIFICALLY AT THE VERY MOMENT RIGHT AFTER BREAKING THE UNALLOYED GOLD NEEDLE, and her falling into a deep slumber immediately afterwards, having to be carried back to the Haligtree by Findlay
So on and so forth… read the Golden Ass to help you understand the plot of the game

Snails can also summon crucible knights

  • @Kamishi845
    @Kamishi845 Год назад +1

That the GEQ is associated with motherhood and birth is not strange at all, because that's literally the definition of all Empyreans i.e. they have the power to give birth and it's also the reason why Ranni refused to be an Empyrean. Hence all Empyreans except Miquella are female (though with Miquella given he has a female alter ego, this is also something which can be questioned to some extent). I also think that the word "father" for the godskin nobles and apostles does not necessarily mean the father of a literal child, but is far more likely to be in a religious context, because they are usually found in places of worship (churches, temples, worshipped as a leader figure in Dominula Windmill village and so on). If you're going to point out to any actual weird instance of incest in the game, then Mohg explicitly being shown to lay with Miquella (we find them doing just that in Mohgwyn Palace) is a far more obvious example.
I also think you place too much meaning on the spiritcaller snails since they have shown no other affinity with the GEQ i.e. wielding godflame. The spiritcaller snails are more likely connected with the ancestrals or the deathrite birds, since they are the ones connected with the spirit world and the general death of all things. It is also notable that the player receives the summoning bell from Ranni, not Melina, and that Melina was gifted Torrent's ring to give to the chosen Tarnished which now people theorize could be Miquella due to the new DLC poster.
So whoever left the items in the Spiritcaller Cave knows about GEQ and has power or knowledge of the spirits, and that person is likely Ranni or someone associated with Ranni. That the spiritcaller snail can summon godskin apostles and nobles is consistent with that all living beings in Lands Between exist both in spirit and flesh. Godwyn died in spirit but not in flesh, and Ranni died in flesh but not in spirit. So these nobles and apostles died at some point, and since they were hunted down by Marika, that makes sense. And after that the snail could summon them just like the snail summons all other forms of spirits such as the crucible knights.

Marika did something (the betrayal) to Melina because Apostles could kill gods to protect her new god-self (similar to how she eliminated the giants for their fire in protection of the Erdtree.) Somehow I feel you (the player) are the "wolf" shadow for Melina trying to kill the gods once more. She leads you all the way to the giant's flame and burns the Erdtree (symbolically Marika.)
    Idk

  • @HavocHounds1988

I'm pretty sure it's stated that Maliketh defeated the Gloam Eyed Queen and not Marika. Though I guess it could be interpreted that he did it on behalf of his half-sister.
Is it possible the color of Rennala's eyes in that phase 2 cutscene aren't accurate? Considering it is implied that whole phase is just a creation of Ranni and not really Rennala.
I don't think a Shadow can truly be killed. I believe that Blaidd actually mentions this if you try killing him where he is found howling. So the GEQ turning her shadow into a blade is probably not something that could have been done, but maybe.

The connections between Rennala and the Gloam-Eyed Queen actually has implications for Ranni, given how Ranni's spirit face is almost identical to Melina's Face, the fact that Ranni of all people is the one who gives the Tarnished the Spirit Summoning Bell, the fact that only Ranni and Melina know about Torrent, and how whenever Melina appears to talk to the Tarnished she appears and disappears with the same blue light particles that Torrent and Ranni have (When you first meet Ranni and she hands over the Spirit Summoning Bell she disappears with blue particles, and Torrent appears and disappears in the same way), the fact that both Ranni and Melina don't have their own physical form and are just spirits, both Ranni's and Melina's connection to the Black Knife Assassins (Melina literally has their moveset when you summon her against Morgott), if the theory that Melina and Ranni are the same person is true (In much the same way as Marika and Radagon), then Rennala's connection to the Gloam-Eyed Queen could imply that Ranni/Melina are in fact the Gloam-Eyed Queen as people have been speculating, Melina is seemingly implied to be the Gloam-Eyed Queen in the Frenzied Flame Ending
One thing that might support this is actually the Sword of Night and Flame, which is found inside Caria Manor, it deals Magic and Fire damage that scales off of Int and Faith respectively, Ranni obviously uses Sorcery so the Magic part makes sense, but Melina is capable of controlling the Flames in the Forge of the Giants and she definitely uses Incantations as seen when you summon her to fight Morgott...
