  • Triumph vs Ducati:
    With the Triumph Rocket 3 bursting onto the power cruiser scene a week or so ago, all the talk about the new bike seemed to centre around how it would fair if it was to go toe-to-toe with Ducati svelte and sporty Diavel 1260 S. Having ridden both bikes - here's Toad's verdict on the two machines.

    The Rocket 3 has so much more displacement for very similar horsepower numbers - which, of course, means it's a lot less peaky but also that the tuning potential for the Rocket 3 is immense. The older gen can already be upgraded with 300 hp supercharger kits, and if you want to talk about face melting power, well... I'm sure the new gen will eventually see similar options arrive. I was in fact a little disappointed in Triumph, the horsepower number on this monster should have been more monstrous, well north of 200 hp in my opinion. Especially now that it has fly by wire and driving modes, you could just run it in lower power modes when needed and turn on the full power when you wanted to go fast.

      The Rocket basically has a car engine, its long stroke means it barely revs past 6000rpm that's why it doesn't make that much power. The Diavel has a much shorter stroke sports bike sourced engine that revs past 10.000rpm that's why it can make similar power with much lower displacement.
      Getting much more power out of the Rocket would require redesigning the engine completely, basically starting from scratch really. But the bike is already pretty expensive as it is...

    • @michaelwinter3132
      @michaelwinter3132 4 года назад +4

      @@BigUriel My '14 is basically just derestricted with a filter, pipe and tune, and gained 40 rwhp. Carpenter Racing does a drive-in, drive-out kit for 265rwhp n/a. So it actually would not be such a big deal to get 200hp, this bike is extremely detuned and governed when stock.

    • @blairtaylor9552

      @@BigUriel Yeah, the engineers apparently overlooked trying to wring any solid performance out of this new engine. They reduced the rotating mass so now it revs to 7000 and made some other improvements but it's still one slow turdwaffle.. I mean, this anchor of a bike takes a full 2.73 seconds to go 0 to 60! Who would want a bike that ridiculously slow!? Oh... wait a minute... hold my beer while I think this through.... :-)

      @Richard Watson Jr. we will see when someone puts one on a dyno. They moved the tq up in the revs, this will help explain the hp increase, I think the cc increase is mostly to be the world's biggest again

    • @blairtaylor9552
      @blairtaylor9552 4 года назад

      @@ArtoDelFunko A couple dyno's have been done. The new R3 is right around 150/150 rear wheel (ft-lbs/hp). These numbers should always be REAR WHEEL, for REAL WORLD. At the crank is NOT rear wheel/real world. Final drive losses will vary bike-to-bike. Anyway, good engineering and nicely balanced numbers. 1) Torque- recently set a record: Stock: 0-60 in 2.73 seconds (I won't complain if you don't :-); 2) HP- If I really needed to go over 140, I'd be looking at a different bike; 3) Lifespan- should live way longer than any overbuilt big twin. This engine is a smooth running 120 degree firing-order, dual overhead cam beast. It revs QUICK, more like a sport bike. Engine and tranny have been re-engineered and improved. To put this drivetrain against an inherently inefficient single-pin-crank big-twin is not a fair fight. The big twin would need 8-10K in 'upgrades' to be near the same numbers, and then reliability will be questionable. They sound cool though, which to some is worth the extra 10-20K, depending on model and cup holders...….

According to Ducati, the new Diavel S holds the record for 0-100 mph and I believe it! I love this bike, although I only have a few hundred miles on the odometer. Moreover, it handles very well and can perform slow agility skills very well. I used it at the advanced MSF class 2 weeks ago and did U-turns swerves and figure 8s in a single parking space just fine. Compared to my Panigale V4S Corse which is a pain in the arse to do any agility skills due to its restricted steering radius.

    A big thumbs up to Triumph and Ducati for a pair of cracking bikes. I was in the market for both of these but finally decided on the Diavel 1260s.
    The Rocket 3R is a great bike (hence my interest) and I loved the fact that it just came as a finished package but therein lies the rub, there is no exhaust add-on or customisation to be had and the engine note on the Triumph is non-existent (at least it doesn't sound like I think it should) and a big part of motorcycling pleasure for me is the sound. Then there's a couple of little niggles... 1, that tank is old fashioned and clashes with the modern-looking engine and chassis and 2, that petrol cap cover is plain fuggly, I couldn't sit there looking at that all day.
    The Diavel, on the other hand, is a beautiful piece of Italian design and let's face it, they know a thing or three about that subject and marry the bike up to the Termignoni exhaust and you have a symphony of deep V2 bass and rumble (which is what I was expecting from that huge Rocket engine).
    Oh, and the Diavel fits through my front door :-)

    I have the Diavel S and can attest it’s a weapon against nearly everything else out there , it still amazes me after 6 months of ownership how wickedly fast it is and despite its looks and that fat rear tyre it handles incredible through the twisty bits , on British B roads there’s very little that can keep up with it , it’s so tractable and the Ohlins set up right is so compliant yet loads of feed back compared to an out and out RR style of thing it’s actually a faster bike point to point than virtually anything out there just because it’s so rideable . On an RR you feel your on the ragidty edge all the time on UK B roads, you just can’t get the fluidity of point and squirt you can on a Diavel . Track days many could beat it but not by much and on motorways the triumph wins it for mile crunching but sheer hooligan fun the Diavel has it . Of course that will all change when the new street fighter V4 arrives , I ve got one also on order and reckon it’s going to monster everything out there, Paginale performance but Diavel ridability, my dealer rep (ex racer) has riden one. and says it’s absolutely mental , on a twisty A road nothing can live with it. . Can’t wait till April :-) . I do also like the triumph and it’s an amazing bike and what it can do for such a size and weight but for me every time I got to the interesting roads and a Diavel flys past me I would be constantly mifted.

    I am Italian but I like the rocket 3 better. I mean, these bikes are supposed to be sport "muscle" cruisers/touring, and Triumph did a better job interpreting the concept I think. Even as far as design, the rocket 3 still has that beautiful retro-feeling that a cruiser should have, plus it looks more comfortable for long-distance rides, and I get the feeling it can carry more stuff than the Diavel.

    Shad has been making hard side cases and hard top cases for the diavel for years now. I have the SH36 Carbon model and they’re seriously awesome! Only cost around $530 for the side bags or there’s an option to purchase a lining bag for both side cases for an extra $100. The lining bags are pretty cool as they line the entire inside of the cases, but are removable with a shoulder strap acting almost as a backpack. The SH36 model bags have a ton of room where each one can fit a 2XL helmet. If carrying a helmet the bag even has straps inside to hold your helmet firmly in place! Amazing bags and awesome quality for the price

    I share the sentiments of many other people here regarding the lack of comparison to the VMAX. I will first start by saying even as a VMAX owner I like the Rocket 3R. Congrats are in order for Triumph as the new Rocket 3 has broken the sub 3 second 0-60 mph mark.Albeit still lags behind the VMAX and Diavel but still impressive for its size. I can see myself owning one of these but not at the current price tag of 22kish which is 5k over a new VMAX. Kudos again for the nice aggressive styling on the Rocket and a factory 240mm rear tire.
    Overall if price is an issue the Vmax is your choice and if weight is an issue then roll with the Diavel. I have no experience on this new Rocket but this is a solid looking and performing bike based on what I have seen in video.
    P.S. For anyone that thinks the VMAX cannot corner try riding one and if you have, try not riding it like a Harley.

      I have Triumph 1200 scrambler and the Harley street glide. both are amazing bikes, for what they are designed for. the Harley was made to cruse 80-90 MPH all day long on the highways and does okay in the twistys. The scrambler was made to 'scramble' around town and hit the fire roads out in the woods or desert. I live north east of LA, we have both in abundance and both bikes are perfect for what they do.
      I didn't buy either bike to race the fuck around on.... every twisty in the mountains and the desert roads all have 'multiple' crosses/shrines along side the of the road for those guys.

      @@wanton1234 My biggest problem with cruisers of any brand is not only the missing performance characteristics but what that also means in terms of safety. It's sluggish, less responsive to quick turns, and less quick to stop. The excuse for this has always been "well it's a cruiser". Bad answer, high quality braking belongs on every category of motorcycles. A motorcycle should be quick to change direction, quick to accelerate, and be able to slow or stop very quickly. Why, you ask? Because when a car pulls out in front of you or moves over into your lane, all the cool shiny parts in the world won't help you avoid a safety hazard. We already take on a certain amount of risk riding a motorcycle. The motorcycle should always be far more agile than a car. Unfortunately for cruisers, Harley set the standards which have been very low and slow to improve in terms of performance that could save your life.

The k1600 puts out 160 foot pounds of torque from a 6 cylinder engine 1.6 liter engine and when coupled with the Remus exhaust has a thunderous soundtrack while still being silky smooth at lower rpms. It’s perfect for freeways or curvy mountain roads and is a show stopper at the cafe as well. I imagine It’s really great for two up touring at least in the US.
