Poor James he just wants to do a normal movie review
I'm pretty sure when David and Riley starts slapping air at each other, James would just walk the f out of them.
David settle down. Guess I'm not allowed to have an opinion that's different to yours
I’m sorry Riley, Michael Jackson banter was the funniest exchange so far
1:20:10 I watched the clip of that fight. They are totally aiming to kill and defending. Stop talking crap David.
The guy on the left should probably not talk about Star Wars movies.
David loves being a hater lol
The darth maul vs qui-gon & obi-wan fight is just about the best lightsaber duel of all time. The music makes it.
I think the reason David and other people don’t like this fight is because they don’t understand the importance of it. If you look up “Dave Filoni Duel of the Fates” he explains perfectly why this is such a pivotal moment in the fate of Anakin and the rest of the galaxy. The movie does a poor job of getting the point across, but it is still very powerful once you understand what all is at stake.
@@beakmaster69 my question to that then is, does the intention behind a product matter if the result says something else? Asking generally, not specific to this movie specifically
@@BardiaIsOnRUclips This is an interesting conversation to have. If we're talking about the *story* of the Phantom Menace, then it conveyed the stakes quite well. The build up to this confrontation and why it was going to happen were clear. But if we're talking about the *movie* that portrays the story, then yeah it kinda failed regardless of the intention or source material. I think this is why game and anime movie adaptations fail so hard, because not only do the movies fail to properly represent the underlying (and already established) story, but they often don't even do that either!
They went hard on the choreography
I rate the ahsoka versus maul better.
“Anni are you okay? Are you okay? Are you okay, Anni?”
If you give Phantom Menace a 0/10 you can't be taken seriously.
seems its because he prefers the disney star wars last jedi lol
This movie was actually just a sweet movie about podracing that happened to have a Starwars theme
In response to David’s criticism of the Obi-Wan vs Maul fight, most of the light saber strikes would have mortally wounded Kenobi. As for the others, in sword fighting, not every strike has to be with the intent to kill. Riley was on the right track with his dance comparison. Sometimes the combatants will parry, or make a glancing blow to try to throw their opponent off balance or force them into a compromised position. Think about it, in basketball the players don’t just shoot baskets. They pass the ball, block and screen. It is sometimes better to set up effectively rather than make a blind execution.
I came here to say exactly this. I had a friend growing up who took lessons in different styles of fencing. He took enough lessons to try to "go Pro", as it were, but realized that there were other people that were clearly out of his league, so he didn't go further with it. He made this same comment after we watched the movie even way back then. Riley's comment about it being a dance is accurate, and is even more accurate in reference to this age of fighting in the Star Wars Universe. Not every attack is meant to be a mortal strike. Much of the back and forth is to measure your opponent's skill, see where their weaknesses are, and exploit those weaknesses as part of the flow of battle to make an actual strike. If you can't find a weakness, the other reason for the flury is also to wear out your opponent. Even if your opponent's defense is seemingly flawless, wearing them out is a viable tactic. To be fair to David, I only know this because I had a friend explain this to me. I can't exactly be upset with David for being so dismissive of Riley's explanation here, but at the same time he's not fairly engaging in a debate with Riley and is attacking him rather than trying to communicate. In much the same way that he digs at Riley for his, at times, ability to overlook massive flaws due to how much of a Start Wars fan Riley is, David's contempt for the movie is overruling his ability to see things like this in the movie that are truly excellent.
I was thinking on Hockey instead of basketball you just dont shoot everytime you have the puck you have to be at least certain otherwise you will lose the control. Let him play FOR HONOR. But yes, you are in this fight to win the battle, not to try to strike him. Probably until certain point they wanted to interrogate Darth Maul... until this point the Jedi Order is suppose to be confident in their strength so just add scene saying dont kill him unarmed him.
To add to your valid points, the seriousness with which David takes this part and goes for the ad hominem really brings this whole episode down
I love that David says "you hate the fight in TLJ because you watched videos criticizing it" and then says "watch this video showing how they never swung at each other during the Obi-Wan/Maul/Qui-Gon fight".
@@jacobstamm David really had been stewing on that for a while
Best part is David just constantly being going "ugh" about Riley being excited about star wars. So much fun.
or the joker laugh when trying to push The Last Jedi on Riley.
I think the “created with passion” is the best universal explanation as to why people enjoy the prequels and not the sequels. Almost every reason, leads back to that. There’s reasons to love each trilogy imo, but the lack of passion in the sequels is THE reason they’re not as good. Everything tied back to that, and the love for the prequels ties back to the opposite.
David is so salty about the last Jedi
It's because he looks like Ruin Johnson. Same round head.
David is salty in general lmao
@@proctoscopefilms but the saltyness in connection to the last jedi is... absurd even for him. it's unhealthy.
1:24:44 back in the 1600s makup was this wax based foundation stuff if they smiled or anything it was physically crack, that why all ther portrates are state faced
For the love of GOD David, stop interrupting Riley to scream that he's wrong.
People are allowed to disagree with you, ffs.
Honestly one of the most annoying things that's bugged me about David. He just puts down and doesn't accept that people can have a different opinion than him. If anyone disagrees with him, he immediately takes the view that they are wrong and that he needs to prove how his view is the only "correct" one to have. So annoying.
It's amazing he's still condescending as a film school drop out
The protagonist in all of Starwars is the Republic. Starwars is a space opera where it depicts the fall of a republic and the rise of empires
then the republic should be personified in a character.
@@TheyreJustMovies it is but not directly: the personification of the galaxy is told thru Anakin as we see a direct correlation between the galaxy turning away from the republic as well as Anakin
@@TheyreJustMovies that is a terrible choice.... Not everything has to be s character
@Matt Hunkee I think you misunderstood…The state of the galaxy is a direct product of the characters throughout the entire franchise. And the Republic never dies it is embodied in the rebellion against the empire. The condition of the galaxy is told by the characters living and acting in the universe to change it or progress it in a positive direction. That’s why you root for the good guys or sometimes the bad guys. Ultimately the overall narrative is that the there are forces of good and evil and how that balance is in effect in the galaxy and how they mirror our very own
That look on David's face when Riley says Return of the Jedi is his favorite Star Wars movie... Also, it really doesn't surprise me that Return of the Jedi is Riley's favorite Star Wars movie.
Rtj is my fav too. Except it got ruined the most with the special editions. Thank God for Harmy....
the ewoks suck but everything else is great
@@loreaver3882 Agree. That was so on the nose merchandising (as would later Spaceballs mock about) decision as it can be. Breaks immersion of big stakes and adds side quest plotline for sake of waste time for no reason at all.
I would argue that the prequels are a resounding success, in that their goal as movies was never seemingly to try to be what the original trilogy was.
Rather the prequels exist in large part to a) Reinvigorate interest in the brand b) Flesh out and expand the universe/characters within it as explore character origins that had be incredibly vague. and c) to be "Fun space fantasy" movies.
In all of these it succeeded, and (personal opinion) it did so while ADDING to the original trilogy in meaningful ways. As opposed to the sequels which arguably when added to the whole take away more than they truly add.
Agree sequels were mockery of lore. And for cherry on top of spitting in your face. One of main executive (khm KK) had balls to say that they failed because lack of lore. Its utter nonsense.
@@alesksander exactly. Lucas even was constantly saying how he wanted to appeal to that new generation ala the "younger" audience
The trilogy, despite the adult hate on it.
It successfully introduce and lure many of my younger cousin to be Star wars fans.
So yeah, its no original trilogy but its not all bad.
I don't know what you guys are talking about I'm with Riley on this one, I loved this movie when I was a kid!
I gotta say, I think David is wrong when it comes to duel of fates. There's only time qui-gon is shown explicitly standing when fighting with obi-wan, and that's in that one really wide shot which is honestly the sloppiest shot in the fight because they're both just standing there while maul bounces back and forth, awkwardly swatting at them. The only other time he does nothing, he was about to attack but maul jumped away so he stopped.
The aiming for the blades thing isn't entirely true too imo, you can interpret that as qui-gon is aiming for the legs and obi-wan is trying to aim for the upper blade to distract/keep it at an awkward angle. It's not super well executed but compared to stuff in last jedi like the guard that twirls in, strikes his blade straight down so Rey can hit it and the twirls away, I think David is over the top by calling people who like duel of fates but not last jedi's red room fight hypocrites.
Anyways, great episode and I love it when you guys get really passionate about something in a movie, it's why I keep coming back. Keep it up!
You're wrong. Watch "The (Totally) Phantom Menace" here on RUclips for a lot of examples with frame by frame breakdown. It's a worthless set of scenes
Agreed
David’s screaming at the end, I love you guys but eish.
Darth maul was not trying to capture anyone
He was there to kill Qui-gon, he was the only Jedi that could train Anakin and interfere with Palpatine's plans
Without Qui-gon Palpatine became a father figure to Anakin and that lead him to the dark side
When you ask for ice cream at McDonald's: 1:23:10
Do you think that Yoda speaks the way he does because he adheres to his own saying to the point that he never even tried to learn to speak properly?
"Do or do not, there is no try." - He couldn't do it and he could never try again without going against that principle, so he never did. That is pretty much the only logical explanation as to why a 900 year old Jedi master still hasn't mastered the syntax of the English language.
As a kid this was the movie I loved the most, and to this day the pod racing sequence is one of my favourite of the franchise
Love to see a new carpool critics episode. I’m hyped for next weeks episode.
Duel of the fates just looks cooler than the one in The Last Jedi.
couldn't agree more. Probably something to do with Maul being way more badass than Snoke.
I remember when I was a kid I watched this film at my gran's house, never having seen a single star wars film in my life, and I absolutely loved it. Sure, I didn't get the politics and the acting wasn't great, but I didn't care, and to be honest I still don't. I love all 3 prequels, not because I think they're cinematic masterpieces (they're not), but because I love star wars and the story they tell. I don't watch the them to see filmmaking at its finest, I watch them because I enjoy seeing more of the fantastic world and the characters, locations and stories that inhabit it. But then again I'm a star wars nerd so of course I would.
Mesa lika da bombbad racing
Exactly Lucas worldbuilding is exquisitely good. Inspires imagination and overpowers whole trilogy tone over cringe dialogue and bad CGI acting. Even for memes are this movies fun to rewatch. Especially ROTS. And also John Williams soundtrack is banger to listen at its own. He even saves Phantom from total flop.
For some reason I've only just discovered this channel. First episode let's gooooo.
Edit: 8 mins in: "is their room for two in this pod racer"
The Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul is the fight that "premiere" the new light saber style of fighting, I can understand that it could be better knowing that the choreography of episode III is awesome, but it was a new style at the time and maybe they didn't know how to squeeze the best of it.
But when TLJ was made, the Duel of the Fates happened like 15 years earlier, they knew what works best for the style and what stuff looks cool. The didn't have to one up it. They "only" had to be on par or close to Obi-Wan Vs Anakin.
Comparing the TLJ fight to the Episode I it only makes the TLJ fight worse, because that tells you that in 15 + years they didn't improve or bring something new to the table.
THANK YOU!! The evolution is meant to be always better than the previous. And its shown in the prequels they use better scenarios, FX, music, vibe. while in TLJ they went backwards and decide to go nowhere.
Now talking about lore... Darth Maul is a Sith trained by the emperor himself. It not just saber light technique its also a fight of the minds minds. And everything feel tense because Darth Maul presence.
This kid though it had a winning hand and with that argument but was so obvious. Too bad on David let the hate wins him over good on Riley he won this small debate.
When we see Anakin's force ghost at the end of Return of the Jedi, he is also wearing the same kind of robe as Obi-wan, so regardless of it being lazy or not, it has been a thing since at least 1983.
That's kind of weird if you think about it though, are force ghost's wearing ghost robes, shouldn't he be wearing the Darth Vader suit?
james here, I would counter-argue that Anakin is also from Tatooine so that's not inconsistent with my stance necessarily.
@@TheyreJustMovies That's a fair point, it could just be common attire on Tatooine. Owen Lars and many of the people at Jabba's palace wear similar robes.
As force ghosts, Obi-Wan and Anakin are wearing basically identical robes though, so it's hard to say if it was intended to serve as a Jedi uniform or not. I think fans probably give these things a lot more thought than George Lucas ever did. =)
James shut down that argument quick time 🤣
he is very well aware of the crazy mindset that occurs when one wants to defend the worst of the sequel trilogy....he isn't for that.
I like how David squirms at the mere mention of any right-wing political figure.
Rewatching this episode really hurts. David's righteous, holier-than-thou, condescending tone against Riley just rubs me the wrong way.
probably because it comes nearly at of no where and it's basis is ridiculous. it's very disturbing David would automatically take that tone and attitude against a supposed friend just for having a differing opinion.
So the b1 droids look how they do because the geonosians made them, so they resemble the geonosians. Logistically, having the droid communication ships makes sense, after all you'd be hard pressed to find a military on earth who use the internet instead of their own communication protocol. Why they give orders verbally instead of through their intranet system is dumb, but obviously just because it is more interesting for the movie if they talk outloud instead of just doing stuff silently.
As a young child my first ever Star wars was phantom menace and it is amazing and perfect. To be completely honest though it is a bad movie and the original trilogy is better but If I am going to watch Star wars it is this or attack of the clones
Anyone else notice poor James fighting off falling asleep from boredom? Him rocking back and forth in his chair was both hilarious and pitiful! Pobresito... 😶😷
If midichlorians were "an aura of the force" it would have been a non-issue. Like, quigon had a suspicion, and he pulls out this device and scans him, and it's like an x-ray where it shows Anakin is like a force magnet.
People don't seem to understand that Midichlorians don't equate to one's current power level, but instead are a(somewhat) visual representation of the potential connection one can have with the force.
In terms of the final battle, I always assumed that being "in the golden age" their skill level was at a point where they were aiming for an advance that would create an opening and allow them to aim for the body - kind of like defensive playing chess 3 moves in advance. It would also explain why the 1v1 battle after Qui-Gon's death was much shorter than the drawn out battle leading up to it.
Love the show, guys. But David makes it almost unlistenable a lot of the time. Calm down and let other people have opinions without jumping down their throat, geez.
1:16:03 is when it really gets heated. Loves these debates and how they snowball.
can you guys clear up one thing for me? According to prophecy, "chosen one" will restore balance to the Force. And since there is almost no Siths and plenty of Jedi...it's seems to me that to restore the Balance you abviously need to strengthen the Dark side... therefore why Jedi teach a potencial threat and a massive one if prophecy is correct?
Balance of the Force is when its all light and no dark. Lucas explains this in a meeting with writers one time. Imbalance would be when there is a force user or group of users being selfish and greedy and power hungry, looking only to themselves, whereas the balance is found in the light side being totally other centered and being self less. The side of preserving life.
Don’t know if it would fit, but I think it might be an interesting episode: Inside the Bo Burnham stand-up special. It’s labeled as a stand-up which is why I think it doesn’t completely fit the format. But I feel like you guys might have really interesting commentary on it from your different perspectives (David the fotography, Riley the story and James hightend vision).
awesome discussions..lovely
There was a fan edit that was very well done circulating around the internet not too long ago. It captures the scope and gravity of a galactic war. You might still be able to find it floating around the internet. No Cheese Edit, Episodes I, II, III.
Finally! I was wondering when they would discuss this one
David's laugh/scream at 32:38 is the best, I hope it's used in other LMG videos. For real though, I wholeheartedly love the channel and appreciate the depths y'all explore. Movie & guest recommendation: Bee Movie with Madison
Honestly I am down for more of the prequels or like David was saying, STAR TREK LETS GOOOOOO
absolutely love this podcast! i would like to see you guys do a La La Land episode, itd be great
That final fight between Obi-wan and Darth Maul is the best light saber fight in the franchise. Period.
Excited for this one. Let's go!
Like many I watched it as a kid. Many members of the family went to see it. Kinda disappointed no one mentioned anything about Darth Jar jar. Missed opportunity. Is there anyway to do more Terminator or Transformers?
Would've liked to see the resolution of the fight argument. Seemed like an abrupt stop, when they both seemed like they were about to make their point, however heated it was.
I typically only listen on my podcast client instead of RUclips, but I came here just to say I love the intensity with Star Wars reviews. Give us more Star Wars episodes!
STOP!! I can’t stop laughing at the Michael Jackson impersonation… I have no idea how you guys stopped hahaha
I think vs. Darth Maul was better than Last Jedi because Ray Park's moves were more active more "wow", and OST Duel of the Fate was epic. So with these 2 combined, it made us forgive it being "totally phantom menace".
Looking forward for more Star Wars episodes.
I'm just here to say I want more Star Wars! And also, if you guys are considering watching more Clone Wars, I would suggest that you go from season 4/5 and onwards as the story is actually getting interesting and more intertwined with the movies.
When are you guys doing the Mandalorian?!
Riley vs David WOW
What you said about nostalgia exactly.
It's the first time I invited a girl over to watch a movie and we watched it and like half the next one.
I was like 12 xD and it was already old at that point.
Interesting you touched on that so quickly.
Also. Sidenote.
Considering that was the first movie I saw. I was broken by the thought of mediclorians (close enough) right away. Rofl. Damn it.
You guys missed the most important part of the immaculate conception of Anakin! In EP.3 Darth Sideous is revealed to have the power to create life!
i saw it on the cinema but it was the third one i had seen an yet i loved it ( i mean of course till this day i love it ) but well i was a kid lol, and YES PALPATINE TWIST? lol I FREAKING KNEW SINCE THE FIRSTIME THEY SHOWED HIS FACE!
On the next episode of tech quickie, we discuss screen burn in on large flat screen tvs.
this usage won't result in image retention. It'll be fine.
I wouldn’t put an OLED in a conference room. That TV is definitely fine
I was just being silly
I still believe that if Lucas followed his rumored plan of making Jar Jar a secret sith, it would have made the prequels so much more interesting. There could have been a really fun reveal where he goes from silly to menacing.
I think my favorite thing about the prequels and this one in particular is how light hearted it is. The world is still pretty innocent at this time. Jar jar is the perfect representation of how you could be happy to lucky at this time. Obviously there is darkness, but it seems mostly positive. Contrast this to the OT where everything is dark and sad and scary. And the ending scene of this movie is just so damn happy. The celebration and song gives me goosebumps every time.
Well. For first 2 movies i agree. But because of that i think overarching Anakin's theme suffers from that. In mine humble opinion 1 and 2 should be one movie. And then ROTS should be two parter to get whole tragic climax effect. So ha! Totally polar opposite as u wrote.
@@alesksander I mean, I love the stories of 1 and 2 so much. I like all the stuff with Anakin and Padme. I wish we had more time with them. But I also liked everything with child Anakin in the first one.
There isn’t much I don’t like with the prequels. If anything I would’ve wanted them all to be longer and more fleshed out.
Yes, it begins.... we'll soon have a dozen episodes of Star Wars.
If you guys keep up with this, PLEASE include Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003), the 2D animated one directed by Genndy Tartakovsky
I saw this in theaters when I was 9 and loved it. Thought Darth Maul was the coolest villain ever.
Clone wars final season mandalore arc is the best SW media ever made
How did no one make an 🎵Are you okay Ani🎵 joke!
So I made my parents take me and my brother to this when it came out. I was 10 and I loved the original trilogy. I was the only person that enjoyed the experience
I'd love to know what lid David is using for his LTT water bottle? I love my LTT water bottle, but I'd like to find a lid like the one David is using. Also, the best part of the Duel of the Fates is the fact that Qui-Gon and Maul are literally duelling for the fate of Anakin. Had Qui-Gon lived Anakin may not have ended up chosing the dark side. At least, that's the theory.
Is this footage super grainy or is it just me? Looks like it was recorded on a webcam
Riley is so hi res the youtube compression algorithms can't handle it...
Yah, it is definitely more grainy than normal
Thanks for the good vibes, guys.
All that Michael Jackson/phantom menace talk and nobody made an "are you okay Annie" joke? Come on!!
I hope there's an Episode II review.
08:25 You guys missed a golden opportunity to say "Annie are you okay?" in Michael Jackson's voice calling Anakin. 😂
With all the video noise in this episode I thought my monitor was borked lmao
Can't beliveve they didn't think of "Ani are you okay? Ani are you okay?" for tha MJ Jar Jar bit
Just went back and watched it, the design of the aliens is absolutely horrific, not a single one looks like something from a Star Wars-verse.
"Dont think, feel" was also famously said by Bruce Lee in 'Enter The Dragon' 😁
and so it begins....
I vote you don't review any more of the Star Wars official movies and instead just go with the Auralnauts ones
Is there any way you guys can review the clone wars show?
I could definitely listen to another 2-4 hours of carpool critiquing the prequels. Please make it happen.
Never clicked on an episode sooooo fast
If I remember correctly the reason the droid army makes sense it's because the droids are very cheap and easy to produce at a large scale which is useful for the kind of operation that the Trade Federation and later the separatist run where the massive numbers of the droids and weapons is mainly how they overtake land and people
I was 8 when I saw both A New Hope and Phantom Menace. I remember that I was confused that Obi-Wan was suddenly young. I first thought that Qui-Gon was Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan was Luke. I got the idea later on the movie though.
I also was pretty sure that Palpatine would became Emperor (but later, after I have watched V and VI). And I loooved Phantom Menace. I quoted it constantly(Russian dub is superb, II and III didn’t live to that, I still mock III for Vader saying “Where is Pad’me?” In Russian dub with soft “d” sound like how you pronounce later itself in English.
Anyway Episode I and IV where my jam for a looooong time
We should just have Dave Filoni reshoot the prequels _:shrug:_
38:24 From a certain point of view?
1:22:20
Riley, you forget: disappointment is also a feeling.
So excited about this episode 😅
would watch again and again if only for the John Williams score..
I know it's not really a "movie" but would you guys do the new Bo Burnham special on Netflix?
I actually kind of want to! Lots to talk about!
Yes I can't wait
Y’all should review Pixar’s Up. I personally think that it’s a phenomenal movie.
Unpopular opinion, Episodes 1 and 2 are my favorite Star Wars movies.
hey as long as the sequel trilogy isn't your 'favorites' thats fine with me random stranger on the internet. :D
Palpatine used the force to impregnate Shmi to create an underling for himself that the jedi would accept as a fulfillment of one of their prophecies.
