The whole scene with Padme dying could have been easily solved. You go from her on her death bed and you transitions to the Emperor . He is meditating, concentrating and then, slowly you see him smile, a devilish smile.
This is all that is needed to slightly change the whole narrative, making it that the Emperor was the one pulling all the strings

I just think that the essence of Star Wars is in the prequels albeit in small doses whereas in the new trilogy does t feel like Star Wars at all. Convoluted plots, bringing people back to life that should be dead, making people do things they shouldn’t/wouldn’t be able to do. The prequels by no means escape all that but when I watch them I find more scenes that I appreciate than I do in the sequels.

  • @kubev

Also, regarding whether Star Wars generally just sucks, honestly, I think many Star Wars fans will even admit that a good Star Wars movie isn't really on the level of a good non-Star-Wars movie. Frankly, Rogue One snapped me right out of my nostalgia for the other movies, to the point I can't even stand watching the other Star Wars movies. I think Rogue One is a legitimately good movie, and I wish other movies would've taken more risks. The irony with Rogue One is that you kind of know what happens as soon as you realize what the movie is about, but it still manages to feel really fresh due to how it really doesn't pull punches.
By the way, I'd like to see something like The Chosen One with a Kung-Pow-style dub. And, regarding Yoda falling, add Wimp-Lo-style shoe squeaks when Yoda moves around or falls.

Watching them made me realize how the original Star Wars and Empire are among the greatest movies ever made, completely separate from the franchise. And I don’t really have nostalgia for them. They’re just beautifully shot and immaculately paced movies.

I like the prequels, I was a young kid when they came out and have fond memories of all the toys and hype around them. Pod racing, darth maul, qui-gon, Ewan Mcgreggor we’re all real high points. The memes that they have spawned since are amazing. George Lucas wanted Anakin to be Fearful in episode 1, Angry in Episode 2 and Hateful in episode 3. Because fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering. Hayden Christiansen did a great job at displaying this transition.

The first time I learned about Star Wars was from watching the CG clone wars tv show. I love that show so much I became a Star Wars fan after that I watched the prequels. Having knowledge from the clone wars before the prequel trilogy made the prequel trilogy far better and a lot more understandable. I understand the argument that some thing made after does not fix what was made before but I truly would recommend the clone wars show. It’s a entertaining show nonetheless and gives you the feeling that you want as a Star Wars fan.
Also the CG clone wars is probably a more mature story than the prequels even if it’s a “kids” show

As a prequel lover, I have a suggestion you may like.
So when Anakin tells Mace that Palp is the Sith Lord, mace and the other masters are already on their way to his office to make sure he gives up his control over the clone army as grevious has been killed.
BUT. A better way to dispatch the other 3 masters would be if they had left sooner, and Anakin only caught up with mace. So he finds out and he’s like “oh shit Kit and the boys are already on their way and they don’t know!”
This way Palpatine, knowing his cover is blown, could catch them off guard and dispatch them quickly when they are just chilling in his office waiting for Mace.
So when Mace arrives. He would see his dead friends and be pissed off. Fueling his anger in the fight and making him want to kill him at the end even more. And then Anakin would see the hate in his eyes, and be really caught off guard by seeing a hateful Jedi.

One of the ideas of what the Clone Wars would be mentioned in the comics previous to the movies suggested kind of a Blade Runner kind of situation where they were made for labor but then rebelled against the society. I think that would have been way more interesting and you could have kept Palpatine being behind their rebellion and the Republic holding onto what they have. Hell, make the Separatists the outer rim. Maybe they got to know the clones and saw their mistreatment and weren’t willing to live with a Republic that allows that. This is all off the top of my head so definitely not my final argument but my point is there were more interesting, and consistent, choices that could have been made

I didn't watch the prequels for years because of the whole "they are crap" fan backlash but I've re-watched them recently and they are... fine? they are movies made for children and I had fun with them as a mid 30's year old. The latest trilogy however I saw in theaters and don't remember a thing about them, totally forgettable. Though rogue one was a lot of fun and my 4th favorite in the franchise

    • @enjoshi-godrez8775
      @enjoshi-godrez8775 2 года назад +6

Made for children is the most pathetic excuse you can make. There are so many examples that destroy that fallacy that its genuinely embarrassing that grown adults can still think that way. Please tell me one memorable character in these films (including rogue one) that was not acted by McGredgor. You watched a film that was functional and extrapolated that it is therefore ok. Thats not how critique works.

    • @jefryions5657
      @jefryions5657 2 года назад +5

As Joshi said. The prequels and rogue one from a functional perspective are superb. A lot of talented people went into making the props and atmosphere of those films. If a robot was to see them it would be give them 10/10 because it would only understand a film based on what is purely observable. And thats the point. People that think about films beyond what you are literally looking at would be able to tell that the prequels and rogue one have appalling pacing, no memorable character due to poor writing, and nothing to remember beyond what was functionally there. The red letter medie review of rogue one does a great job of outing this idea that if a film merely functions at the most basic level, then its somehow ok. That how a child would interpretes reality, and sometimes not even that.

I don't think the prequels "ruined" The Force, per se, but I do think the prequels focused on the wrong things to add interesting twists to, just as the sequels did. There always has to be some sort of lightsaber gimmick or some sort of vehicle gimmick or something. Why not make The Force and how different people use it more interesting, rather than having these canned aspects such as Force Lightning supposedly being a strictly "bad" power?
Honestly, The Force doesn't really make much sense, anyway. Why do Jedi even need lightsabers or weapons in general? Shouldn't they be able to repurpose a Force Push or something to strike an enemy from a distance or block physical attacks without need of a physical weapon? The Force is one of the most disappointing aspects of the entire series, as it's never really explored for its combat abilities with any sort of depth.

    • @kubev
      @kubev 2 года назад

Oh, actually, I've got a potentially slightly more interesting idea: justify the use of lightsabers by making them a tool to use in lieu of The Force, with Sith being the ones who use The Force for combat and that somehow being what sours them and makes them evil or whatever. Maybe the Jedi are only supposed to use The Force to build, create, heal, etc. In either case, anything's more interesting than what they've been doing with it.

@@kubev don't get me wrong, i love the prequels and am just getting back into sw after being a nut for it as a kid just because i like it, including for it's pulpiness for want of a better term, but i've always had a similar peeve re: new lightsaber designs feeling gimmicky n the combat becoming all spinny and flippy. some of that choreography is amazing and makes for an intense fight (obi wan vs maul after the energy gates open after qui gon's been stabbed for e.g.), a lot is mediocre or ridiculous and crap (in part thanks to the direction, looking at u RotS finale) but even when i do like them i love the OT duels more for their emotional tension between the players involved.
when people complain about sw, others often counter 'lighten up! they're kids films meant for kids ffs!' this isn't a legitimate counter to legitimate criticism of the quality of writing or direction etc of a film smh. kids deserve quality too. having said that, i've always had the distinct impression all the gimmicky light sabres (and people wielding two at the same time for e.g. as well) were just to make it 'cool' to kids and to sell toys. i don't actually mind maul and his double, as that was the first time we'd had a change up, and being the first he was a cool character and was wasted being killed off so early so definitely should have got more of him imo.
      duelling
also, even as a kid i've always also had the idea of how much i'd love to see our heroes use weapons in (what would be considered in contrast to the usual) unusual ways as tools for problem solving and helping etc. and not necessarily always for violence, no matter if in self defence. would be so cool to see this and add another dimension to how our heroes get out of trouble or find solutions to problems and help people, so definitely with you on that (your thoughts on force are interesting too)

I know it'd probably take a long time, and it'd probably force me to watch these movies a hell of a lot more than I'd want to, but I'm half tempted to create a really aggressive cut similar to this one that doesn't bother to compensate for natural transitions between scenes and such. That said, I imagine it was painful to leave some of this stuff in, as George Lucas did seem to have a knack for throwing dumb shit into scenes in which the dialog is pretty important to the overall story. I stand behind my previous statement that an edit like this needs a Kung-Pow-style dub. It'd probably be easier to make something cohesive.

EDIT: re. Palpatine's face, I'd always assumed, from the moment we saw him as a senator in The Phantom Menace, that his scarred wrinkly face was just his *real* face, and the fact he looked normal was just him using his power to disguise himself. I assumed at some point during RoTS when he'd reveal himself, he'd just drop the disguise and let everyone see his real face. It would have been so awesome because it would have shown just how powerful Palpatine is - that he could have concealed his actual face for years, from everyone around him, like a Sith mind trick en masse. The way they actually did it was sooo crushingly disappointing in its stupidity and huge missed opportunity.

@@Glen0cide Honestly I feel like episodes 2 and 5 are quite similar, and am surprised at how different the fanbase feels about them. They both split the narrative into two after an attack on something important (a VIP senator and a secret base respectively), with the Skywalker going on a journey of self-discovery while his companion(s) go on to find support (and pursue the bounty hunter in Obi-Wan's case) while being intercepted by enemies. Towards the end they reunite, albeit somewhat earlier in 2, and there is a confrontation between Skywalker and the baddie where he loses his arm and has to be saved.
I myself am not a great fan of 5, since it feels somewhat unfocused and there's no real "big plot" where everyone comes together to do something by the end; instead, Luke suddenly reunites with the team when he is saved, but Han is already gone and he lost an arm and has to lick his wounds. In 2 everyone reunites for the battle of Geonosis. The title as well, "The Empire Strikes Back", doesn't feel all that important when no main character really dies or anything (Han gets kidnapped, but that's solved early in 6 so whatever). It doesn't have the impact of a loss just because a secret base is attacked, since we've never seen it in 4 and don't get attached to it before the big fight.

George Lucas actually change the look of the emperor in the original movies to look more like the prequels. I believe they originally use the image of an ape superimposed onto a woman's face.

The king of Star Wars prequel fanedits remains Hal9000's cuts - same basic story, but he cut a lot of the overly goofy jokes (like Jar Jar stepping in shit and tasing himself with the pod racer) and hammy dialogue ("i hate sand"). It doesn't turn the films into A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back, but it definitely makes them more watchable with 20min of crap pulled out of each.

I haven't seen the edit, but I do have a couple of thoughts about Star Wars in general.
I definitely agree with Riley, the fact of the matter is that Star Wars has always been cheesy, it's always had questionable directing, dialogue and plot points, at times it was downright predictable in terms of the story being told. But when the movies were released, the combination of a very easily palatable story, an incredible soundtrack and visual effects that were basically groundbreaking led to people ignoring the weaker parts of the movies. Star Wars became a hit and it captured people's imagination. It was Lord of the Rings, except you would actually want to live in the Star Wars universe, you would actually want to have these great adventures, and all the meanwhile you imagined that epic soundtrack booming when you flew your spaceship and guided it via the force.
The soundtrack evokes an epic fantasy world, not a sci-fi one, the horns, the violins, the drums, they immediately captured the minds of a whole lot of people. And through the music and the universe (that's keener on creating a certain atmosphere and a "vibe" than something grounded) that Star Wars resides in, it became a global hit. In my opinion the characters, while pretty good after getting a lot of character development through the movies (and in cases decades of books), were never the high point of Star Wars. I would not care nearly as much about Luke, or Vader, or Han Solo in any other setting, they're at their core, mildly interesting characters with very old, already treaded on motivations.
What I would care about would be an exploration of the Star Wars world, the universe is so, so good to get lost in, the books that explore the universe, create new concepts while respecting the mysticism and spirituality of the OT are some of the best ones in Star Wars. I think the focus of Star Wars being this Skywalker saga, or the Chosen one saga, is what made it so boring and stale. The Skywalker story ended pretty nicely in Return of the Jedi, we did not need 6 more films and who knows how many tv shows or animated series treading on the same ground. I understand that using characters which are already developed is a really easy way to create content and of course merch. But come on, it's a universe where basically anything you will can exist, you don't have to spend your time with outright uninteresting characters and locations.
The games do such a better job of exploring what Star Wars is that it's insane. Fallen Order, while ripe with its own set of problems, is an absolute gift to Star Wars fans. Because though the worlds are small, the life within them basically nonexistent. It still captures that feeling of being on an adventure inside this wonderful universe, while retaining the themes of mysticism, spirituality and finding the power in yourself. Fallen Order might be formulaic at times, but damn if it isn't some of the best Star Wars content in years, because it allows you to lose yourself in it. The same was true for KOTOR, the same was true for the Darth Bane trilogy of books.
You know what unites all of those media properties? They don't have any emphasis on any already established characters. They're just good enough stories told in a Star Wars universe. The exact same thing is true with Rogue One. It's a war movie that's set in the Star Wars universe. It would be an alright story on its own, but the second you add that unique Star Wars flavour it's just elevated for a lot of people, because it's a fucking great fantasy universe. 1/2

The prequels struggled for a lot of reasons, and apart from the story being meh, the dialogue being atrocious at times, the directing being a weak point in the first two movies, and the very dated CGI. What I think made prequels weak for me, as a Star Wars fan that grew up with these films, fell in love with everything Star Wars and then came back to them, was that they made Star Wars feel less mystical, less spiritual. Nothing in Star Wars makes any sense, why would anyone use lightsabers when you have this incredible force (hehe) that can literally lift up tonnes and tonnes of material. Why is the force used in such a limited way? Why are lightsaber fights just glorified spars? It doesn't make a lick of sense, and yet these stupid omissions creates these vibrant communities that come up with all sorts of theories and ideas that again capture your imagination. Not everything in Star Wars need to be explained, in fact some things should remain in this gray area of - explainable, but purposefully mystical, but there are some glaring omissions from the movies and Tv shows that just leave you scratching your head.
I think the stronger parts of the prequels were what Riley mentioned. The fact that the Jedi have lost their ways, that they are obviously very blinded to the real world, the struggles of the real world outside of their temple and how rigid the Jedi order has become. It's subtle throughout the films but it's definitely there, and it would've been awesome if that aspect was explored more, because again that would be exploring the universe more, what are Jedi turning a blind eye to, what has made them this secluded and rigid, what makes them think that they're so righteous, why is a separatist movement gaining ground, how does it all tie into the force. Imagine a character in the prequels that saw the Jedi for what they had become, but instead of destroying it like Dooku or Anakin, they tried to change it from within, a character that struggled with the force telling them one thing while the Jedi said another.
This doesn't mean that you can't enjoy goofy and at times awesome lightsaber fights, that you can't enjoy the cheesiness of Star Wars, and that you can't have a laugh about it. I enjoy the prequels despite their shortcomings, because at the end of the day you can just enjoy the fact that it's a silly story with silly characters but in an incredible world, and they at least made an effort to expand that world and to expand your wonder about that world. I would never enjoy them if they weren't Star Wars, but because they are, they can be enjoyable. 2/2

So I wrote way too much, but I guess I had a bit more than a couple of thoughts on Star Wars. I really enjoyed this episode guys, it made me think about what Star Wars kind of was for me and what it meant for me. I've always enjoyed writing about the Star Wars universe, and getting lost in it. The thoughts here are very much personal to me and others might not share the opinion, but still. The episode was a good motivator for me to jot down all of these ideas and thoughts I've had about Star Wars for more than 10 years now.

Yes the fan edit is not great movie because the movies it’s working with is not really good
I feel like if you going to watch the Prequel Trilogy you’ll be better off watching this fan edit this gives understanding of the Prequel Trilogy without taking 7 hours of your life majority is boring this one is watchable unlike The Prequel Trilogy movies separately

Vis a vis James' "It's for kids." Argument, fair enough, but kids aren't idiots. They're just ignorant and don't know a lot, but that doesn't mean they deserve idiotic, vegetative state-inducing content that talks down to them. I really hate seeing the "hey it's for kids, so who cares if it sucks?" mentality out there. I know James isn't about that life, but yeah. Grinds my gears. Kids deserve better.

hardly disagree the worst part of the prequels is the third episode - the first episode could have been a lot better tho with darth jarjar less anikan and more jedi stuff - the second episode is the best again would have been better tho with less anikan and more obi-wan clones and bounty hounter scenes

    • @klebyell

I mean attack of the clones has the cringe dialed up to 1000, anakin is at his absolute worst. The cgi is at its worst, particularly in the first half hour. They made yoda a beyblade, obi wan has an 80s haircut for some reason and they ride a rhino.

@@klebyell there might be some truth to what you say but i don’t see most of the points you mentioned as strictly negative i hate most anakin scenes anyways but the bounty hunter scenes and the battle of geonosis are awesome the only good thing in episode three is the opening scenes in the space, kenobi on uthapau, windus arrest attempt until anikan shows up and yodas battle with the emperor

The prequels are basically cartoons - albeit with live action and piss-poor cgi. The style, the dialog, the acting, and barrell-rolls/spinning around in fight scenes, ARE ALL straight out of Saturday morning cartoon shows. Absolutely terrible.
I know there are people out there, who say the sequel trilogy is worse than the prequels. These people need help ... 🤨

  • @Mystikus2

The discussion Riley started when going into the nitpicks section is one I had recently with a friend:
I am not really a star wars fan, but I enjoyed lego star wars, Battlefront and swtor back in the day and Fallen Order today, but I never really understood how Star Wars got as highly praised and famous as it is.
You can totally see how one person would become a fan, but it never seemed to me that the quality of Star Wars justifies the size of its following.
In fact, it's quite odd to me that Riley used to be a huge Star Wars fan but also pays attention to lore so much, as almost nothing in Star Wars really makes sense when going into the details of it, how force powers are used is a great example, but you can see it everywhere

Once you take off the rose-tinted glasses, a lot of it is pretty egregious.
