The original 1993 Jurassic Park movie from Steven Spielberg occupies special territory in our hearts and minds...But does it hold up to a critical re-watch? And if it does, can the 2021 sequel, Jurassic Park: Dominion, possibly be as good?

Another great review... however, thought you should know that the gui shown during the "Unix system" scene is real! It's part of the OS of 90s era Silicone Graphics computer systems. I got to play on one of these as a kid. I was probably a similar age as the girl in the film. I recently watched this video about one of these systems. Check it out. ruclips.net/video/ZDxLa6P6exc/видео.html
OMG! This has been my only major criticism of this movie all my life and i was totally wrong...
Another fun foreshadowing. When they are flying into the island for the first time, Grant's nearby buckles are both female connectors, and can't be locked together. Grant, eventually ties the two female ends together, constructing a makeshift belt. When faced with the inability to breed, the dinosaurs found a new way around the limitation of having only "female connectors."
Fun fact - that was a real GUI called FSN, or File System Navigator. It ran on IRIX systems, and was developed by silicon graphics! :)
You missed one of the coolest things. The actor that plays John Hammond's is David Attenborough's brother. Such a cool little connection. A man world renown for his nature documentaries is related to the guy known for a fictional recreation of a dinosaur zoo.
meant to mention this!
"Deux rex machina" OMG 😂
"Adult Velociraptors grew up to 6.8 feet (2 meters) long, 1.6 feet (0.5 meter) tall at the hip and weighed up to 33 lbs. (15 kilograms)." That's one heck of a big "small dog".
6 foot but 33 lbs, damn no wonder they were fast
You should check out the Utahraptor. It's more like the raptors in the movie.
Love your podcast! I've listened to all of them and you guys are super fun to listen to. Keep up the great work.
Re: The raptor seeing the kids and not moving/attacking right away. When a cat sees a mouse, both animals freeze and wait for the first to move. Generally the mouse will go first and then the cat catches it (if the mouse doesn't immediately go into hiding). So it could have been intentional. Lots of animals do that.
Also, I can't believe you didn't mention the raptor breath on the kitchen window!
hammond's arc was hard to built in the film because hammond dies in the book. screw the spoiler alert, its been out for a long time..
The book is really good too. Arguably better than the movie. All the problems they had up with Malcom and even the plants are addressed in the book
1:19:48 - Regarding Riley's point about the shotgun ammo, honestly, I always used slugs for deer hunting (which is why I was confused for the longest time as to why buckshot was called buckshot, as I couldn't imagine using it if you didn't want pellets all through the meat). Slugs just have better range and stopping power albeit with the obvious downside of less (zero) spread. Frankly, if I had to face off with a dinosaur (and assuming that I didn't just decide to cower in fear as it killed me), then I'd definitely want slugs in a shotgun - not buckshot.
My god what is James contemplating so hard at 5:17
That stare...
It was a fart.
I was terrified by the dead pan stare at the camera
Thanks for the inspiration

@@chintzypc5508 that's a good edit!!
@@chintzypc5508 Holy cow that's perfect!
Great movie, great subject, great effects, etc. It was responsible for my "dinosaur phase" when I was a kid... Just like Titanic was for my..... "historical oceanliners phase" (yeah, that happened)
Titanic! The reason you play World of Warships
In wich phase are you now?
@@DanDanFAlves The simp phase.
I had a dinosaur phase too because of this movie.
I get it was a kids film. But when they fed the raptors the live cow. Then pull the "harness" back up. All the metal is shattered and broken. The cloth is ripped into a million pieces. But didn't have a single drop of blood on it. Bugged me so much lol
I remember watching this in the theater and I remember it showing her reach out of the vehicle as they are driving and grabbing the plant she was examining during the first dinosaur reveal.
I haven't seen it included in any of the releases so far. Also i remember a big yellow "deer crossing" sign at the end except it was a stegosaurus silhouette
Re: the cars, the park is in prototype phase, not mass production. As part of their "soft open" they would use consumer vehicles until their transport system is fleshed out.
First off, how do you go a decade or more without watching this movie? Whether it's just on TV or I'm in the mood to put it on I watch this at least every 3-4 months, lol. It's not my favorite movie of all time but it's just such a classic.
As for nitpicks, even with how much I enjoy this movie I definitely still have a few. And I think my biggest ones are these: 1.) It's not just that when "running" from the falling car in the tree (which was a Ford Explorer by the way, the red ones were Jeeps), never mind that they don't just go sideways but look at the size of those tree branches. That car has already stopped moving and come to a rest after it's initial fall. There is no way it's going to break those branches and even IF it was able to, it would be forced away from the center of the tree. It looks so janky watching this car clearly be forced straight down by a hydraulic hammer, lol. 2.) Still dealing with the car in the tree, Tim would be SO dead from that fall. The windshield was already blown out and when the car hit the tree he would have been launched straight out the front. 3.) How in the HELL does the gap on the other side of the T-Rex perimeter fence work? First, the T-rex is towering above the cars and is clearly on the same level before he breaks out. But in the next shot when the car goes over suddenly there is a huge drop. How? Where does it come from? I remember it being explained as more of a safety gap in the novel but in this version it makes absolutely no sense and it confuses me to this day.
"just on TV" lol I haven't had cable since I moved out of my parents house 16 years ago -JS
1:07:44 - A friend of mine stumbled upon one of these thumbnails, but it was of Eric Stoltz as he appeared in the movie Mask and had a headline to the effect of, "You won't believe what he looks like now!" I had to explain to said friend that the "before" photo was of Eric Stoltz in makeup for the role he played in the movie.
Sum up: And I mean these in the funny, observant ways: David: quite particular, Riley: over-simplifies everything, and James: reasonable.
This movie is pure nostalgia for me and I love it, it’s perfect. It holds up too.
Great show.
Waiting for you to review Wargames.
Matthew Broderick had an awesome gaming rig for 1983.
Stoked to watch the movie and then this episode! How come you guys stopped uploading in 4K?
Totally agreed. My parents took me and my brother to theaters to watch the movie and I cried myself to sleep out of fear in the theater.
Same!
1:03:39 - This is one of my biggest pet peeves in movies: misuse of flashlights. The Purge is probably the worst example of this. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but I recall someone hiding in a dark basement...with a flashlight on. Yeah, great job.
29:20 No Riley, they take out the ostrich or emu DNA. They're just using the cell replication and maturation machinery (enzymes and proteins and so forth) present in the egg. The same happens when they do this in mammalians. In fact the same technologies used can be utilized to help human couples who have trouble having a child.
1:10:40 HUMANS can't produce Lysine on their own. The vast majority of animals and plants do produce Lysine.
I swear Riley hasn't seen the films he's talking about.
Oh man this one is gonna be fun, will listen soon👀
I like that in the intro for the movei synopsis, James' eyes directly were staring into my sou. Nice!
the way james says deeeeeeee-cals. lol
"Its a horror movies for kids!" I watched it multiple times before I turned 5.
5:17 he's just staring...menacingly!
I did some paleobotany research in undergrad (in 2007) and only last year did I realize Dr. Statler was a paleobotanist. I feel so ashamed.
Saw at a movie theater as a kid. I had nightmares with raptors for some time after I saw it.
First movie I ever saw with home surround sound as a kid. Truly terrifying!
Sadler and Grant aren't together..? I've always thought they where just coleagues, did I really miss that all these years..? 😮😂
clearly the movie velociraptors were just utahraptors or baryonyx hybrids
Dr. Sattler DOES grab the leaf in the... TRAILER! For whatever reason it made it into the trailer but not the film itself!
I remember it being there when i saw it in the theater way back when. and haven't seen it since.
Was looking forward to Riley's recorder solo
13:00 regarding Ellie Settler "just having" this leaf that shouldn't exist: Watch the trailers, there are shots of her leaning out of the driving car to pick it off a tree.
They filmed it but cut it.
Riley's squat and spray method sounds awesome. Gotta find somebody who's willing to try that one with me.
I thought they mixed up the Velociraptor with the Achillobator
Do PRISONERS (2013) with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhal, directed by Dennis Villeneuve
actually, the kid on the fence would have had nothing at all. there was no outlet for the electricity, so no effect on him.
At work right now but definitely listening to this one when I get home

Was apprehensive of watching this as Jurassic Park is my favourite movie of all time but I feel like you were very fair and thorough. I agreed with a majority of what was discussed however I feel the nostolgia and my love for dinosaurs overrules my head and just cannot see it as anything other than perfection and I struggle to think of any 30 year old movies than have aged as well as this.
Link to PIA leads to forum, not to PIA? Wanted to use your link...but I guess visiting their site will do.
David got interviewed by Madison, YES!
this is my favorite movie of all time. I remember as a kid this being THE movie for me and still my favorite until this day. You guys have to be nicer on the cgi though lol. This was the first movie to us so much cgi and they pioneered cgi use in movies. Honestly why it's not a good as some of the stuff today, it's still better than some after almost 30 years. So glad y'all did a review on this, made me want to watch it tonight. Also if you have read the book, it is a very different story than the book, but unlike most movies based on books, it didn't disappoint. Love this channel, keep it up!
They literally only said one part of the cgi was bad...
@@supaapple if you read the statement it wasn't dumping on them. it was giving historical context that this was the first movie that has more than a few seconds of cgi and that this movie literally pioneered cgi in movies and that was almost 30 years ago and still better than some cgi today. sorry you don't like people that giving a contributing opinion or try to be part of a conversation constructively.
@@tomstev5026 Uh sure, sorry you're so butthurt by a comment that you need to write a paragraph.

the cursed black bar on the right is cursed
1:17:15 I am positive Muldoon is portrayed as British & a warden from South Africa.
Where are you guys getting Australia from?
Please do all of them!
I completely agree that its a horror for kids. Spielberg is great at that concept, makes me think you guys should do War of the Worlds (2005). Whilst I think its the best film hes done since the 80s, I think itd be interesting to hear your guys take on it
Please do Last Action Hero!!
black triangle on the right side of the video? camera crooked?
The excitement over Deus REX Machina is the best lol.
Hell yeah brother!
Riley not knowing how eggs work made my day. Stay gold bud.
I initially watched this film in the cinema when I was like 7 or 8 years old with my grandfather and I had nightmares for years! But now I love Dinosaurs.
I have also wondered all my life why they didnt just move to the other side of the tree
Pretty sure James saw a fan trailer and thought it was the official JW3 trailer
This is totally possible considering I never saw either JP World movie :(
Whoa whoa whoa. I usually listen to this as audio. How long have they been cutting for??
since day one :)
I love that I'm not the only one that called the character Newman.
Riley yes, using slugs on larger targets is incredibly common. Shot isn't going to do much to deter or wound something like a bear.
Hey guys I love these! Maybe take a look at the movie parasite?
They've done it- an early episode :)
@James. It's definitely pronounced dee-cals. I was so confused for a minute 😂
No, that's just how Americans ruined it.
Some snakes have squishy eggs
Spared no expense is a joke. They have clearly spared no expense. Denis is having financial trouble but is the best programmer they can afford? Two programmers? Basic Ford Explorers with minimal modification? No manual door locks locks? No paved paths? Thatch huts for bathrooms? It's all about the joke how much it rush and slapped on a plastic lunch box.
I honestly thought that the lady from the thumbnail was Janice from accounting.
They don’t give a battery replacement and trying to convince people that we are just protecting the environment. The more problem in environment is the increasing number of dump mobile phones because the phone has poor battery life and the batteries are not easy to replace. If they already decided not to give a charger but at least should give an extra battery instead of charger…
Thank you,

End bird = evolved dinosaur It’s just that as far as I can see. Nothing else
IT'S 1993 FANCY ICE CREAM RILEY.....GAWD
Am I the only one who thought Pierce Brosnan was the actor who played the archaeologist? I swear my whole life, up to this point, it was him in my mind. Maybe because I watched those Bond movies as a kid?
maybe because of that volcano movie, Dante's Peak?
You do realize chickens lay unfertilized eggs....
do roosters fertilize them after the fact? That's what's at issue here. I'll never let Riley live this down. -JS
@@TheyreJustMovies Fair enough... and fair enough.
Google is telling me velociraptors were 100 pounds....not exactly a minature puddle
(edit) well, after more review, looks like the internet can't decide how big they were
I'm sorry but it's "e-mew" not "e-moo" :P
Love the banter, as usual.
I thought that they based the raptors on the Utaha raptor and called it Velociraptor because the name was cooler. obviously there's a few variations of the story.
Favourite movie of my childhood. I'll enjoy this one :)
One of my favorite movies of all time!
40:00 Human progress is good, technological progress for the sake of new-ness is not.
is this the carpet crickets channel ive heard so little about?
Yeah that's Michael Chricton themes, he always have a bit of anti progress view, particularly for profit science
How did James see Jurassic World 3 trailer?😐. By the way Colin wrote Jurassic World 2 also. So don't get super excited 😂
Spoiler Alert: Riley has by far one of the GoAT puns in this episode
I am a zoomer and yea... I loved this movie...
This is the first movie I saw in the cinema and yes it gave me nightmares.
Came for the review, stayed for the bird sex discussion.
Why the fudge does James say dehkahls.
Grant's job is literally digging up the past.

This Movie has Dinosaurs. It needs a wild Sarah to appear.
Easily the best of the franchise 9/10.
The sequels just nose dived.
Lmao! Slugs are a extremely common ammunition for shotguns.
