The final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Rises is a big, ambitious, messy conclusion to one of the greatest superhero franchises of all time.

I love how basically anyone can do a perfect Bane impression.
Yeeesss *in Banes voice*
54:51 - My personal understanding about this moment was that we, the audience, are seeing the "illusion" through Bane's eyes; tricks like smoke, hallucinogens, darkness, and whatever else you can tie to a League of Shadows alumnus comes off as a cheap trick to another alumnus familiar with the techniques. We are made to see Batman look weak, just as Bane sees him.
"It would be extremely painful.... for you." is one of my favorite lines ever. How in the hell does anyone actually think he was replying to the quip about his size?? He nearly interrupts Littefinger to deliver "... for you."
It's because of his tone. It doesn't sound like he is finishing a sentence, but rather responding to the last thing Littlefinger is saying. If the tone was different and sounded like the end of a sentence more people would get it.
@@lucioledizerot196 I don't think it's ambiguous at all.
Littlefinger: "Would you die if I took off that mask?"
Bane: "It would be extremely painful..."
Littlefinger: "You're a big guy" (implying he should be able to handle the pain)
Bane: "... for you"
It's pretty clear Bane is implying that if Littlefinger took of his mask it would be extremely painful for him [Littlefinger]
Haha it doesn't matter because the delivery is so awkward.
@@TheZahand again, Bane's tone doesn't match that
Bane sounds like he's doing a weird Sean Connery impression.
banes accent is absolutely not a "gypsy" accent. Its a posh, stiff-upper-lip, rich person, English accent. Nolan saying it's gypsy is so bizarre to me.
why so washed out
yep
Yeah, looks like dog shit
My guess is that they're using the same cameras that they would use to shoot LTT videos which I think come out washed by default but you're used to seeing color-corrected footage. They probably just don't want to go through the trouble of color-correcting because of the podcast format of this series. Complete guess by me though, I don't know camera tech or video editing.
@@brikehn or maybe just shoot in some rec709 standart profile, but i dont personally mind the flat image.
@@kaimelis yeah idk what that means, mine was a complete guess from my very limited knowledge
Do Klaus for Christmas
Christopher Judge is Teal'c! Forever! However, I approve that you point him out regardless.
No question about that. Same with Jason Momoa who is always Ronon Dex. Do normal people know about the episode where Christopher and Jason try and out do each other.
@@Catsrules1 i'm not normal, so I can't answer
Indeed.

Every year for Christmas my wife and I watch lotr trilogy
You should watch Die hard as well.
Riley has Gandalf, James has Bane. Does anyone know what David's in the impersonation/voice department?
I want to know what the pit Alfred and blind man did to get INTO the pit
Pit Alfred 💀
Being born there, probably
The Bane voice is goofy-ish but Tom makes Bane such a bad mother f***** that it’s forgiven
Guys, it would be amazing if you did an episode in the Rush movie about Niki Lauda and James Hunt. I have never seen anyone talk about it so I thought you guys could cover it as it seems like an enjoyable and good sports movie to me(Formula 1)
What I understand about the jump is it’s not long enough to reach.
bane sounds like Jerry Seinfeld with a mask when he yells
Losing all his shares forces Wayne to turn to Talia to keep control of the device that was used to make the bomb thinking he would be able to trust her not to sell/use it as a weapon
I always look forward to Riley's next kill switch
This movie is the beginning of the end for Nolan in my opinion, in terms of discovering his relatively poor writing and storytelling choices.
I really enjoyed tenet if you ignore the blatant paradoxes and plot holes........lol.
@@KhromTX to me it was bland and without emotion. I watched it and forgot about it after
@@lucioledizerot196well that's unfortunate because I think it's probably in his top 3 best films ever at least.
@@KhromTX to me, the movie thinks cool effects make up for an effective story and character development. It was basically inception/interstellar mixed together but worse
@@lucioledizerot196 Eh, I don't watch Nolan movies for character development, so I get what I expect.
I'm not sure if you touch on this but ill just say it-the reasoning behind not having the rope for making the jump ties into having fear, it just means that you need the fear of death to make it. with the rope as a safety net, you can try as hard as you want without making the jump, but without the rope your body pushes you that little bit harder due to that fear of death, sort of a kick of adrenaline sort of thing, or maybe a mother lfiting a car off her baby. Basically a human doing a superhuman feat due to the fear of death

Riley consider this an official request to make an onlyfans/patreon account and do content like this, comedy sketches of characters reacting to stuff in their world
I was molded by it
Big up to James for recognising there are countless British accents and not just Hugh Grant.
Love your podcasts. Keep it going. Regarding this movie: I enjoyed it, didn't fall asleep. Bane played by Tom Hardy was really good while not tainting(,couldn't think of another word) the comic book original in general. The whole movie kinda flyes to close to the action movie category in general. They should have developed the story more like in the first part, a little slower more detectivy. But yeah it was good entertaining, and took me on a little journey. I would give it 8.8 out of 10.
I always thought the rope in the pit was too short for anyone to make "the jump" with it.
Yeah, I hated the Bain voice because it felt like he was doing a constant Sean Connery impression. Drove me nuts from the first time seeing the opening.
David. Just to preface my main point.
I love the podcast and I'm not one of the people who find you annoying or a smart ass. You can be a bit bigheaded, but that's ok, so am I all the time. Usually I find it's because your brain gets ahead of your mouth. So you, or with me at least, start speaking in more definite terms to allow the mouth to catch up.
I'm not an English major so I'm not positive my writing will be up to snuff with you guys. But I've been told I'm kinda smart so I'll do my best to make my point clear and respectful.
That being said. Please stop straw-maning and strong-maning arguments. When you reply to someone's debating of your point with the most obvious to answer version of your point. For instance when you said to Riley "do you really think Baine was ect."
My reason for bringing it up is just that it's a tactic to shut down arguments\discussion's by making something or some point so obvious you can't possibly reply. And you guys are here to play off of each other and increase discussion. not shut each other down, even if you dissagree or are debating something.
Now, I don't want you to always agree, that would be boring. But you can mentally joust in a way that's more productive as opposed to less as well. Anyways, just a little feedback. Still enjoyed the episode as always!

7:06 - Bane Wayne Drain XD
1:07:00 "is there evidence of that?" (Bruce Wayne wanting to die in a blaze of glory)
YES - It's a MAJOR theme ya numbskull! - "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain"
Can you guys add three movies to the pipeline? Thanks!
Pursuit of Happyness
Trial of the Chicago Seven
Megamind
The revolutionary theme/poor vs rich may have ended up as window dressing because he wanted to talk about it, but in order to do it justice the whole movie had to be about that, and he wanted to do too many things. Of course, what you should do in that situation is cut things out to focus the film on one thing. But that's easier said than done.
And part of that is, if the people do rise up and follow Bane, with Bane clearly being the villain, you're almost saying that revolution/fighting for your economic rights/freedoms is villainous, and I think that's definitely not the case.
11:03 - I didn't even know that Chris Judge was in this movie until now. I know him from Stargate. I looked up some stuff and there's a theory about why he wasn't in more...
"Fun fact: He was actually supposed to be in more of the movie but he is such a large man compared to Tom Hardy that they cut most of his scenes where he was near Bane so he wouldn’t make him look shrimpy."
Littlefinger: If I pull that off, will you die?
Bane: It would be extremely painful.
Littlefinger: (implying that Bane can handle the pain) You're a big guy
Bane: (implying that he is a big guy for him but it would still be painful to him)
Duhhh!
My problem with the film is it’s just too long and trying to do too much: it comes off as unfocused and confused.
This really should have been two films: The Dark Knight Falls, which ends with Batman in the prison, and the Dark Knight Rises, his recovery and saving Gotham. That would’ve been wayyy more focused and more time to flesh out themes and characters like Bane and Talia.
The problem with making it two movies is that Bruce Wayne will spend most of the second movie in the prison pit. It really needs to be one movie for Bruce's character arc to flow as smoothly as it does.
If you get a chance, I hope you try and review "Drive", from 2011, with Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. Just an awesome movie ... with a doubly-awesome soundtrack. Bit of a cult movie amongst the #synthwave community.
Lord of the Rings is the ultimate Christmas movie(s)
Die Hard is.
Lord of the Rings is the ultimate movie for any time.
Banes voice is the same kind of quirk as Anton Chigurs hair
Bane's voice is like Casino Royal's bad guy not having a typical gimmick, it's something kids want, but you get to appreciate when you're bit older.
Brine, ruler of the GAZ (Gotham Autonomous Zone).
Bane's voice serves as a great contrast to his terrifying persona. IMO it almost makes him more frightening than a typical villain tough voice or dark voice. it shows just how powerful he has to be to be that even with his weird accent people are still terrified of him.
This movie definitely should have been before The Dark Knight 100%
They're are face masks that look like the bane mask on Amazon, you should have worn them for this one... wasted opportunity guys!!!
Irish Travellers and Romani are not the same group. There are about 225,000 Romani in the UK and about 19,000 Irish Travellers. Their accents are nothing alike. Bane and Batman's voice in these films are all terrible. They just suck. But once you've ruined Bane and made him a stooge of the League, and not a Venom fuelled monster with a genius level intellect of his own whose from South America if I'm not very much mistaken... you've jumped the shark.
Batman does not beat Bane by Punching him harder. He punches and destroys banes mask which you can see an hear (there is a very distinctive sound to every punch Batman throws in his last fight with bane). Bane is getting super mad from that and loses the control over the fight. That is why Batman wins
why always i find the little clips first randomly online,... why RUclips doesnt give me the feeth as something way more relevant? this is great!!! and im already subed' - WTF
I hated the fact that Bane does not fight Batman. He fights a frail man who can barely stand up. Completely one-sided fight. Also Nolan doesn't understand what a spinal fracture is. Disks don't "slip". They tear. If the tear is bad enough due to high impact trauma, Bruce Wayne would have needed SURGERY immediately if he every wanted to walk again. So the final fight with Bane was completely unbelievable to me. It's not possible for him to heal naturally, particularly the bad condition he was in to begin with.
I actually do watch LotR every year around Christmas; my friends, and I have a Hobbit/LotR extended editions marathon to bring in the New Year.
“I’m so mad when they try and be philosophical and they fuckin’ fail”
Regarding the aircraft hijack scene, part of my aerospace engineering degree covered air crash investigation, which really made that scene stick out as just dumb. The whole point of the field is to work out where the failure originated, and you can trace it back to tiny cracks even amongst the mangled wreckage. So there is no way any investigators wouldn't question why the wings separated so far from the rest of the wreckage...
The C-130A has a stall speed of 92 mph with 100% flaps and a cruise speed of 240-290 mph (at low altitude). I would think they would want to keep at least 10 knots above stall for safety during filming which puts the speed of the aircraft at about 104 mph. This is for filming, and I'm assuming that in the story the CIA Embraer EMB 110 isn't flying THAT slowly, even with the door open, maybe as much as 150mph.
That means that in the 1 min 23 seconds it took between wings snapping off and the fuselage being released, they travelled roughly 3.8 km (irl, but in-fiction) up to 5.6 km. That size of debris field is possible if an aircraft breaks up at high altitudes and speeds, but you would expect lots of small parts scattered around, not into 3 distinct parts (wings, empennage and fuselage).
The altitude is hard to judge from the video (thanks in part to the different shots filmed at different altitudes) but looks to be from 300 ft in some shots to 5000 ft. A fall from that low and slow would mean the parts of the plane would land more or less in one piece, rather than scattered over an area.
That alone would be enough to throw up a big red flag and warrant a much more detailed investigation at which point they would be asking:
Why did the wings and tail come off mid-flight?
How did the fuselage manage to keep flying for at least another 3.8km without wings?
What caused the wings to break off downwards?
What caused the explosions that took off the empennage section?
What caused those holes in the fuselage (that were used to attach the cables)?
Why was the fuselage riddled with 9mm bullet holes?
How were the people inside shot with guns that weren't aboard the aircraft?
The robbery/hacking was the part of the grand plan as that ultimately led to Bruce granting Talia access to the secret reactor. He had gone bankrupt and lost access to Wayne enterprise's assets. This forced his hand to seek the help of Talia as she was the only one among BODs that he could trust at that time.
yes, but why would transactions during an armed heist be allowed to stand? These transactions leave a huge paper trail and are easily trackable - First thing the police would do, would be to check what the robbers actually did, and since they used someone's keycard and connected to a local terminal at the stock exchange, it'd be pretty obvious what happened. they'd be better off doing that silently, and over a longer span of time.
It's just one of the dumb plot points in TDKR, that don't make much sense. Just like the whole police force being stuck in the sewers, or said police force emerging from the damp stinking sewers after months spent there in wet clothes and shoes, ready to fight Bane's henchmen, clean cut and shaven. Or how about when those henchmen throw away their automatic weapons and decide to fight the police with their fists instead, or Batman talking to himself, and people that know his identity, in Bat-voice, or fixing a broken/brusied spine with a punch, or a magic knee-brace fixing Bruce's legs, Bruce getting crucial plot details from Ra's hallucination, or the whole 'we won't blow the nuclear reactor up yet, we'll give the heroes time to disarm it' situation. That's not even everything, but I haven't seen this movie since 2012 - some of it, like the ending, or the goofy voice, is touched upon in the podcast.
I do remember the pacing was bad - half of the movie dragged, and then Gotham's occupation was very compressed time-wise. I remember acting not being up to snuff in some cases - with Marion Cotillard's death scene being the worst offender, fight scenes having extras fall for no reason multiple times in the movie, and wasting a lot of time on new pointless characters (i.e. Dagget, and some new commissioner), when they were clearly struggling with what they could fit into TDKR's bloated run time, and they had to cut a lot of important stuff to make it work (I.e. Bane's backstory got cut, the whole rich vs poor revolution doesn't come across very well, with how little time is spent on it, etc.). This movie was a mess, and being a sequel to TDK, makes it look even worse.
Sorry for the wall of text.
Mocking Bane's goofy voice, say that to Tyson's face David. LOL
Guys the bane accent is not british. In the making of films, he said it was a European accent, kinda Bulgarian, wrestler type
It's not even a debate ofc he means it will painful for you hahaha didn't even know people questioned this.
Bane does not feel like he is a major bad guy in this movie like Joker is because they made him nothing more than a henchman.
They ruin bane the reason that he was such a villain in the comics is he was intelligent AND augmented. His only connection to the League in the comics was after Ras gave up on Batman to be his heir and it was because of the villain that he was already not the league that made him. So you spend most of the movie thinking why can Batman not take out this goon when he has literally cleaned up Gotham taking out all these goons much worse than this dude with a mask all because they chose to make him a puppet for this story instead of the big baddy that he was in the Comics just to pull a gotcha with Talia :( I am with Davids first score of more of a 4 I cant stand watching this film even though I had high hopes for it after 1 and 2.
The stadium they show is Heinz field in Pittsburgh and the reason it looks empty is because it was 90 degrees that day but they wanted everyone to wear winter coats to better fit Gotham so like half the people left during the shoot. I was actually gonna go but I didn’t because of how hot it was
Talia is the worst part of that whole film. Bane's goofy muppet voice is the second worst part.
I just found this podcast and it’s over. But this episodes are enjoyable
The small bomb is thrown to make anyone on the other side to back off so they don't get crushed by the rubble from the big explosion
I cannot stand David's whole schtick, i get you don't like it but you sound so whiney
I didn't want a JGL Robin movie, but I did leave wanting a JGL Nightwing movie
Fellas, I doubt you'll read this but I just want to say this podcast is one of the very few binge-worthy shows out there. Let alone it being a podcast. Please keep going as you've just gained a big fan of the show! And you bet ya I'm binge-watching/-listening. Lol. Trying my best to watch the movie before each show, but the podcast is just too good. Never stop!
They need to bring it back
That guy on the left is so annoying. He acts like a comic book nerd but knows actual shit
YES! I always thought the film should end on Alfred looking at the camera and nodding. I knew James was going there. Thank god I’m not the only one who thought that.
That would be far less satisfying than the ending as is. Not only does it not add anything to leave Bruce's fate ambiguous, It defeats the purpose of Bruce's journey.

What headphones are they wearing????
Anyone else annoyed by the messed up audio sync
I saw this movie in a triple feature midnight release. So after watching the dark knight then immediately this movie, was a huge disappointment. I still enjoy it more than batman begins, but I could personally just take the dark knight by itself. I feel no need to watch the other two movies like I would with most trilogies. And I gotta after the bane voice is way too silly. From the very start of the movie all I could think is "this is the voice they went with?" Joker had a specific voice but it worked really well, bane sounds like a joke by comparison.
If you look up Tom Hardy's audition tapes for Star Trek Nemesis (2002) he tries to do a very similar Bane voice. The director intervened and we got normal Tom Hardy voice instead in the final film. Truth is Tom Hardy was sitting on this silly villain voice since at least 2002, cracked it out again for Bane, and unlike the ST Nemesis director, Nolan didn't tell him to stop it.
I (although not that believable) accepted that the rope was an extra 1% weight holding him back from the jump, my problem with the rope is that the distance he falls and is caught would snap him. Needs to be around his thighs as well. And that's assuming the rope wouldn't snap as its not at all elastic. But it's just a film so I'll let it slide...
Two Towers on Xmas day? Sir Ian McKellen is the kind of Santa I'd want anyway. Merry Christmas everyone!
You say that the film doesn’t make a point with the theme of rich vs poor, and Bane using the ideology to mask his intentions.
However maybe they are making the point that revolutionaries are in fact just thugs hiding their true motivations with pretty words, and in the end everyone suffers under violent revolution.
Can you guys add subtitles?
I've been telling people for so long that the movie would have been way better ending on Alfred nodding, but not showing Bruce in Italy. Glad you see it as well James.

Okay so with the 360 punch I did go through and watch the fight, thought it looks dumb, it's supposed to be because batman tries to spin him and punch him but bane uses the Force of that spin and adds his own force to it to punch batman
No no, Batman beats Bane at the end with the new information that Bane's in constant pain and aims squarely for his mask to incapacitate him, as Batman knows that even though he now has a fighting chance, he's still no match for Bane physically.
after all havoc the usa wreaked in the middle east, bane's coup feels a lot more senseless, gotham don't drop bombs by the thousands so that I could pay less than a dollar /L
Should do Logan, probably the only comic movie to rival the dark knight
He is impacted by the loss of his shares by having to give Talia the reactor. He was forced to pass his interests and reveal the McGuffin.
I really like this movie but many of my friends hate it, very happy some people agree with me on aspects of this movie.
James's suggested ending was absolutely perfect.
I detested the "ambiguity"of _Inception_ 's ending because it came out of nowhere, completely unearned, but there was enough lead-up in this film for it to make sense.
