Update: i got this tip from a few some lovely people in the comment section: I tried the 5x lens with action mode turned on and the stabilisation looks a lot better! Not perfect but definitely useable for home videos (i wouldn’t really use it for commercial work)
I’ll check it out! I didn’t colour grade or do any correcting in post on purpose though as I wanted to show what the quality is straight out of camera.
I'm loving how it looks, I think the video finally shed the 'shot on phone' look using the ProRes Log mode. Can't wait to get mine!@@lilafromyoutube
Oops I just saw your pinned comment. I would also suggest that you look at the quality of the 24 and 48 MPixel files for the from the Main Sensor. They are are big jump in quality, and not as aggressively sharpened. Also, there is a huge 48 Pixel DNG raw file for photos.

I went from the 12 pro max last year to the 14 pro max , and like you I’m not a fan boy and am a realist , none of the phones on the market are perfect , , and neither is the 15 series , it has some good points , but from what I have seen I still think some of the things that matter to me like durability, the 14 pm is imo streets ahead despite all of Apple hooplah marketing …. Titanium, titanium 😀. As for the 5x zoom , it still seems a bit wimpy when you consider some android phones had 5x zoom in 2018 and have gone way past that on some models.
Going from 14 series to 15 series seems a very questionable buy unless you have a specific use case for one of the 15’s features.
I might add I still have my 12 pro max , and I still like that old phone, and I do prefer the notch that is way less intrusive than Gilligans island/dynamic island😊.

One thing a lot of people miss, is that the gap between x2 and x5 is digital. If you shoot mostly up to x3 you are better off with the pro, as you are getting less digital crop and more optical range. Also, the ability to re focus afterwards is and has always been possible in portrait mode. Now we get auto portrait mode available by either the camera seeing a person or animal, or by manually selecting a focus spot. If you do t do that, you get normal focus with no way of changing it later.
Hey, how does the battery compare to the 12 pro that you had? I know it’s a “max” phone so it has a bigger battery and what not. I was considering the regular 15 pro, but debating atm.

Can the 15 pro get the same quality and stability you like when recording no ninja walk in the main lens, 2x lens and ultra wide lens? Or will it not be the same because it doesn't have the same stabilizer?

Like all image stabilization, there are limits to how much the sensor can move, and apparently your review of the 5 x zoom ran into those limits. Hence the jerkiness, However, you are not doing justice by expecting it to be an "Action" lens. But when you use the combination of its stabilization along with Action mode (which uses a crop instead of full 4K) and it gives incredible smooth, gimbal like performance. I've tried that today, and am very impressed, and you can see the similar performance in the Tyler Stalman review.
You’ve always been able to just double tap on the back of the phone to launch the camera. You chose that in Accessibility settings. You can also choose to triple tap.

Really appreciate the review! I am still using my iPhone 11 Pro so the 15 pro seems amazing to me. I appreciate your honesty on the stabilization and cinematic mode limitations. I don’t expect Apple to have pro level cameras until another 5 years…but compared to where we were 10-15 years ago…this is mind boggling!!
It’s gonna be an incredible upgrade for you if you wanna get one! Also, re: stabilisation. You can turn on action mode when shooting with the 5x which makes it a lot better. I found that out today haha. It’s def mindboggeling how far we’ve come

Wonderful video! While my big lenses and camera won’t be getting replaced anytime soon, it’s at least good that my phone can now, in certain situations, be used as a legitimate secondary tool that *compliments* my camera rather than remaining in my pocket or away from me because the quality coming out of it isn’t up to par.
Versatility, modularity, and the overall quality of a big lens and sensor will always win out for me. But, if I’m now (or when I do upgrade to a 15 Pro) in a pinch, don’t have my camera with me, or in a situation where I feel the need to pull out my phone to shoot something, whether photo or video… I can at least feel more confident that the results will be good enough that I can actually use them for things.

In cinematic mode you can alter the aperture afterwards and the focus :) I should make a follow up video hahaha

Haha neither did I! I found out about it recently. I still don’t know all the features or functionalities, but I don’t really use cinematic mode anyway. People say it looks better at f8 but at that aperture you might as well use the regular video mode. I tried it on my cat and I actually liked the bokeh (what’s left of it haha) nicer in regular camera mode.
Pretty cool, just let me know how is finger print over titanium body as some users not recommended blue color for that reason, plz advise
I have the black and the finger prints are all over the phone. I’m not sure why they didn’t fix that since they’re using a new material now. I will use a case and am used to the 12 pro which is a finger print magnet too, so I’m just dealing with it

Ps Blackmagic free app is out now and looks good for editing 4k 30 / 60 log ect. Also I’m hoping my micro sd 256 cards with a lead will work and small form factor than SSD. 😃😃🤩🤩

Thank you for your honest review. You’re the only one who ever addressed the image stabilization issue I’ve been facing since the release of iPhone 14 Pro. I have a 7 month case open with Apple and to see the issue carries over to the new iPhone 15 Pro tells me that Apple’s priorities are elsewhere. You can try factory settings and record at night while walking and see how horrible the footage is!
Oh yikes. I think the stabilisation of the other 2 lenses are great, just not the 5x lens. That one sucks 😂

Hahaha I’ll have to check it out. Honestly based on these comments I think cinematic mode isn’t the worst if you close the aperture more, but that kind of defeats the point of cinematic mode? Or am I wrong?

You can always just use an SD card with an adapter. I'm also sure there will be cases and whatnot soon that include external storage. I saw one reviewer that had a Samsung SSD (tiny and flat) rigged to magnetically stick to the back of the phone etc. WAY easier than dragging my camera gear everywhere especially for the short commercial stuff I sometimes shoot. I'm very excited for this option.
I use the iPhone 11 at the moment and if you download the new free Black magic camera app you can record directly to an sd card even with iPhone 11
I got the same phone as you I came from an iPhone 12 (the regular one) and I live in New York, I can say the 5x lens looks incredible, that 120mm can get very amazing shots but you have to stay in one position when recording and not move, but honestly that’s the same with any camera out there unless you have a gimbal or something, naturally with any camera the more you zoom the more you will sense the movement
Re the action button used for camera , useful , but you can also already do it using back tap via either double tap or triple tap, and it works regardless of what you happen to be doing or what app your in. Depending on how you set it up, I have triple tap to activate camera and double to activate Siri .

For editing on your phone? I guess - because it’s a bigger screen size. I don’t edit on my phone as I prefer my MacBook 😅 but yeah bigger the screen the easier it is to do tideous edits I’d say?

Hi actually I’m surprised you get bad result in 5x stabilisation video I watched other review and you could see the actual phone video while was recording and than the stabilised video and result was so good he said that he used some action mode did you use that mode to ?

I was thinking how great it would be to have an external HD for phone footage for travel video, but you are right.... with mirrorless cameras also becoming better I rather have a dedicated camera. I think phone cameras are so convenient and I'm glad they're as good as they are. I'll probably get the next release of Sony's asp-c cinema camera. It's annoying that the A7IV doesn't have LUT integration.
I saw another reviewer using the 5x telelens with action mode and getting very smooth stabilized video. Maybe you could try that?

I am upgrading from the 12 pro max to the 15 pro max because I like the screen size and the extra battery life of the larger phone and I wanted a phone where transferring files to the computer didn’t take ages when recording in ProRes.
Sounds like a great upgrade! I have been really enjoying the additional things the iPhone 12 never got with updates.
Try boosting up the F stop in Cinematic mode, it makes the footage more usable.

My first iPhone was the 6s Plus. I’ve since been through an iPhone 8 and now an iPhone SE (2/2020). I’m torn between the models. I probably would use the 77mm more than the 120mm, but I do often miss the bigger screen in my 6s Plus. I do use my phone for all my RUclips videos now, but I’m not sure I wouldn’t rather have one really great camera and lens and use Moment lenses, or perhaps something even better that might come along.
That’s fair! I think the moment lenses are great. I’m enjoying the bigger size of the max. I had a pro before. Whichever one you choose, you’ll love it coming from a 2020 model :)

Like you, I'd be coming from a 12 pro and the cameras alone are what I'm hyped about because I film a lot on my phone as it is so that'll be pretty nice from a quality perspective.
8:36 correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 2x and 1x lense are the exact same lense here.
They are! I just referred to it that way as I thought it would be easier for people to understand what I’m talking about
For cinematic mode to look good you have to put the f-stop somewhere in the ballpark of f8 and then I found it quite pleasing.
Doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose of cinematic mode though?
@@lilafromyoutube for sure a little bit. But it does produce a more pleasing video to the untrained eye. I fooled plenty of people in my family with it. Would never shoot anything professionally though
For cinematic mode try to use F4 it will more organic ( will get blurry background).. the stabilization is awesome 👏🏻

I think you didn't know that 4K Cinematic can be adjust after you shoot the video. I usually shoot it at 3 or 4 then make adjustments from if I'm not satisfied. 3 or 4 are the sweetest that I have used.

At 1:24, the video says, ""The iPhone Pro Max comes with not 3 but 7 lenses. On the back, we only see 3 lenses." To be clear there are NOT 7, but only 3 lenses. The fact that the iPhone uses cropping and processing to offer 7 specific focal lengths in its user interface does not mean that there are suddenly 7 lenses. If digital zoom equaled having additional lenses, then the iPhone would offer not 7 but a couple hundred "lenses" because you can zoom to almost any focal length from 13mm onward.
At 1:55, the video says, ""The telephoto lens does not just offer a focal length that is equivalent to 77mm but also 120mm." That is incorrect. If you choose the Pro Max model, you LOSE the native 77mm (3x) focal length. It is replaced with 120mm (5x). You don't get both lenses. It is not possible to get 77mm from the Pro Max telephoto lens because the widest focal length it can achieve is 120mm. If you select 3x on the Pro Max, you're selecting an aggressive digital crop of the 24mm lens which isn't the same thing as an actual 77mm lens.
Went from a XS max to 15 pro max and i’m a bit disappointed with the camera. Was expecting a bigger difference in quality and the 5x lens is an awkward/not very useful focal length. Wish I had just gone with the regular 15 pro with the 3x lens. I feel they messed up by not adding a 4th lens to the pro max (3x).

For an honest review, respectfully you take Apple at face value in their marketing. It’s not 7 lenses, it’s three, marketed as “lossless zoom” which is completely inadequate. The 3x zoom on the max is not the same as the 3x zoom on the regular pro. That one has a optical sensor.
They are both optical. The only difference is that the Pro Max is a 5x vs 3x on regular Pro.

Higher MP sensors can do it more effectively as you don't lose pixel resolution, but it is like using a smaller and smaller sensor, until you hit a certain size where it becomes image cropping.

I really want to see how 15 Pro Max takes shoots in third party apps. Especially in comparison with Sony Experia 1 V and Pixel 8 Pro which is coming soon. I bought my 13 pro, because everyone say that iPhone is the best smartphone for photo and video shooting but… I’m not sure about that. It’s still oversharpening a lot, frequently misrepresent colors and makes overall image unnatural. Now I’m thinking about switching back to android, but can’t find comparison video with Sony when iPhone has been used manual camera settings 😢
Completely agree. The 5x camera is not that useful because how often do you really need a 120mm? Would’ve rather had a 2x optical or even just keep the 3x
Yeaaaah. It’s better in action mode though (found out about that after this video hah) but i agree. It also just jumps between cameras for some reason (it’s on my stories)

Thanks for the video!! I've seen your comment about 5x being better with cinematic mode. I'm doing my research and the 5x camera isn't looking like a good one 😢😢 i want the pro max for bigger screen and bigger battery, but i want the cameras of the pro 🥺🥺
Not cinematic mode but action mode. You get the same cameras as the pro, the max just includes a 5x.

I'm going to make a video about what that's the case, the pro is also stronger than the max when it comes to durability, but that being said, the max has a battery which is better for longevity/long run sooo I actually think I'm going to buy the max, just wish it had the lenses from the pro, again I'll go into detail on an upcoming video.

It’s not the same as opening the camera from the screen. The button allows you to start the camera in any mode you want.

Not having a proper camera *and* using the old iPhone X currently for filming my RUclips-videos the 15 Pro Max *will* be in my pocket at the end of November, come hell or high water. *Then* I can start saving up for a proper camera - will be making a iPhone X vs iPhone 15 comparison video of the transition, but people have to stop comparing each new phone to the previous phone, makes no sense, of course there will be only minor upgrades from one generation to the last, it’s how companies make money and keep prices down generation by generation - if they where to do more major changes each generation each new phone would cost 2-3 times more, or even more than that - by doing incremental changes they spread developement cost over several years, maximising profit while slowly changing things around and keeping prices as low as the market is willing to pay.
As for the included camera app vs features - I *think* it’s a balance thing, as in «give people a mid level type camera app» that works for most peoples uses included for free, and let other developers make more advanced apps for advanced use that cost the money, so Apple can make money off those app sales. It’s only logical, why make a great app and give it away for free, when they can make a basic app and make money off the sales via third party developers - less cost and risk, more profit, they are a business after all - and the Blackmagic comes along and kills the income from the third party video camera app market :D
Why are you opting for the pro max and not the pro? Re: native camera app. I personally feel like if they market this as a pro tool for filmmakers, they should add the functionality or add a disclaimer that you can get more functionality using 3rd party apps. I understand we can’t have it all, but for this price point and their marketing, it’s weird to not get any of the tools we need to shoot proper ProRes LOG. That being said, the footage came out great, I just wish we got more control.
I’ll likely just get the pro, trying to hold a phone steady at 120mm is virtually impossible. I have a 13 pro now, don’t really need the max…or the added cost.

Do you think that the Samsung S23 Ultra would have been better for you given that it has a 10X optical zoom , which can go twice as far as the IPhone 15 PRO MAX and still look good . What are your thoughts on this considering you are a camera girl .
I haven’t used that phone so i can’t really comment on it. However, people have mentioned this phone to me so I may check it out. I’m personally invested in the apple ecosystem now despite there being better phones out there. Kinda how it goes, eh? 😂🐑
Apparently is "overhyped", because a professional photographer actually said it, that the images are actually cropped not zoomed. Either way, I'm not upgrading my 13 Pro Max yet, I'll wait for the 16 or I'll just get the S24 Ultra, which definitely is going to be vastly superior phone, as always.
honestly if I wasn’t so invested in the apple ecosystem for my creative workflow, I would probably go for a Samsung. They seem a lot better from what I’ve heard (and I’ve always used Samsung before switching to apple)

As someone who's had iPhones since the 3G,. the advances and progress in technology we've seen over the past 10 to 15 years has been nothing short of insane. I know some people who say the new iPhone 15 isn't much of an upgrade for people who have the 14 or 13,. but it would be my guess that's really not the demographic Apple is shooting for. We have to remember Apple has all the internal statistics (which and how many devices are associated to all their customers AppleID's).. so they know the distribution of how many (and what kind) of iPhones are out there. The iPhone 15 will be a great upgrade for anyone still using iPhone 8, X or 11.

Will it produce better pictures then your full frame camera with dedicated high quality glass... Nah, not by a long shot. But are YOU willing to carry that bulky load with you day in day out all day... Nah, not by a long shot either. This phone might be the perfect compromise between portability and quality. I still have my Xr and will go for 15 Pro, just not sure if I need the Max or not.
Correct me if I’m wrong but the only difference is the 5x lens for as far as I’m aware. You could also go for the 15 pro and get extra storage. Depends on your needs!
I have the Xr as well, and ordered the Max, but given the neg. feedback I've seen, I might cancel and get the 3x. I am torn!
It's 3 lens plus 4 crops modes. lol. Not 7 lenses.
Spatial video is just 3D video., test it out later this year with the 3D player and 3D TV.
It doesn’t come with ‘seven lenses’ it comes with three (four if you include the selfie camera), it cones with seven focal lengths!

To be fair you wouldn’t walk around handheld with a 120mm on any camera and expect for it to be stable, would you?
Have you faced the glare while shooting videos with lights in the scene? The last MKBHD video mentioned something about the lens coating causing it.

I like the zv1 personally but I ended up selling it as I got a wide lens for my a7siii. The zv1 is just a bit too tight
I have zv1 and zv-e10, I don't use them anymore because it's bulky and extra things to care and carry. I used my iPhone 14 pro max like 99% of the time. No reason to use cameras anymore.
