    As a VFX artist and supervisor I can confirm, that what you say is true. The ony factor in compression is the perspective, that is created by the distance to the subject. If you take a widangle shot from the same distance as your portrait, how could there be parallax (movement between foreground and background) if you didn't change your position, right?
    If you move towards something, the things farther away get smaller at a slower rate as the things closer to you, so the background objects look smaller on an image in comparison to the foreground object, than if you're further away.

    • @stalman
      @stalman  8 месяцев назад +31

      Great to have confirmed, I know most photographers think all the magic is in the lens and the difference definitely isn’t intuitive

    • @ChloeBanderas
      @ChloeBanderas 8 месяцев назад +11

      @@stalman a good sanity check is a zoom lens. If the focal length did anything to compression you could see the change while zooming in.

      I don’t understand.. are you saying that a 5x crop is the same as a 5x lens? Since distance to subject stays the same…. So if you have enough megapixels then you can zoom as much as you want??

    • @ChloeBanderas
      @ChloeBanderas 8 месяцев назад +8

      @@kevinvo6144 Only in terms of compression. The depth of field and other lens characteristics will be different. But how much of a difference it makes depends on the specific examples you‘d be comparing.

      @@stalman I dont get the negativity around multiple focal lengths on the iPhone 15 Pro. I dont think there is a person in the world that thought/thinks the iPhone 15 Pro actually has 7 different physical lenses. This is definitely the only video videographers and photographers need to watch. Record direct to USB devices is the most game-changing feature, because it means to save $500+ on an iPhone with larger storage. Suddenly you have a log-capable camera for a little over $1000 which is also your phone. And also, as an iOS developer, I can say that iOS 17 brings a TON of new features when it comes to connecting the phone / iPad (which already has USB-C) to photo / video equipment. It's clear Apple has shifted from trying to sell you the most expensive phone just for the sake of it, and moving towards really Pro features. Great video Tyler.

    Every year I look forward to your review of the new iPhones and this year is no exception. Thank you once again for making a detailed, well-rounded review of the new phones and for staying consistent throughout the years. It makes it even more impressive to see these sometimes iterative feeling upgrades year over year amount to quite impressive improvements when switching from a two or three year old iPhone. Coming from a 13 Pro the wow-feature for me this year was your example of the action mode shots. Don't know that I will use them very often but quite impressive and nice to have with all the other improvements that impact daily use more.

      @@stalman You're very welcome. I do have to agree and probably am guilty of this myself. As the whole iPhone category matured over the years, the yearly changes are just not that extensive anymore. The jumps and leaps I experienced from switching from the original iPhone to the 3Gs and the 4s were just something different that switching from the 11 Pro to the 13 Pro. I now dabble with a new Pixel every other year for work and that seems to be a good compromise for me while still having fun with the new devices and improvement :D

    To answer you question about focal length ( I am a vfx supervisor ) you are absolutely correct (+/- lens distortions happening on wide lenses close to subjects that add even more to the effect). But yes it’s correct. A zoom is technically a crop, the face changing is because if you compensate the crop by changing your distance to the subject then it’s a perspective change. That’s what happens in a vertigo shot basically.

      People often don't understand the difference in perspective distortion vs lens distortion. What he talks about is 100% perspective distortion. Lens distortion is independent of the focal length and could also be 100% digitally corrected or added if you want that. The goal of all rectilinear lenses is basically to have 0 lens distortion

They are really for two different types of users. The regular 15 user likes the features (action mode, low light, 24MPs) but wants the camera (phone) to do the work. The 15 Pro user may want that as well but is looking for a professional camera as well which Apple now really offers.

    Thank you for the unbiased and honest review. I hope that Apple takes into consideration views of like-minded professional photographer's like yourself and of other reviewers too especially, that their HDR 5 needs a bigger shift in the processing of darker parts of the images (1.50~2.20 min mark). And yes, some of us do feel the same too that this wasn't the big jump that we were hoping for. I hope Apple would send some tweaks/fixs/upgrades towards the ip15 based on the above observations. I was really looking forward to getting the ip15 pro but have stopped short, after seeing many such reviews pointing out the very same issues observed. Btw, I love the action mode and the portrait mode. Common Apple, you can do better!

    I actually like using the action button to launch the camera app. Compared to the camera button on the home screen it saves you two actions to complete.
    For example. In the scenario of a locked phone. You have to:
    1 press power button to activate screen
    2 press camera button on the screen
    With the action button you just press it and can immediately start shooting by pressing it again. It’s just a bit faster and easier. And to some degree this also applies for when you’re in an app.
    As someone who likes street photography. This small time saving feature can actually really help out capturing these “decisive moments” we hunt for.

    Great review - thanks!
    By the way, you can make the visual compression thing intuitive by drawing a simple picture: a top-down view of the camera, subject, and background, with the edges of the field of view drawn as two lines radiating out from the camera. Changing the angle between the two lines (the focal length) doesn’t change the relative size of the subject and background objects - the only way to change the background compression is to move the camera to a different distance from the subject. It’s simple geometry, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

    Best use for the action button is linking it to a shortcut. What are you doing often? Opening Lightroom/photos, automatically transferring/saving of all photos from the last 24h to a folder, etc can all be linked to the action button
    The limit to shortcuts is your creativity!

    Dang this made us miss Copenhagen. Pumped about being about to shoot in LOG. That action mode is not bad at all...might not even bring an action camera anymore for our secondary camera. Thanks for the review, Tyler!

    Wow, great review. That RED app footage looked pretty amazing. If someone told me that was from an iPhone I wouldn't have believed them prior to this video review.

    10:09 What the VP of camera software engineering at Apple stated about the 1.2x and 1.5x modes:
    "What we did here is we actually built dedicated neural networks so that when you’re at those focal lengths… we bring in in a kind of very kind of thoughtful and specific way, the pixels from the 48 megapixels to basically do a detail transfer”
    So, in fairness, cropping into the main camera isn't all they're doing, they're doing some kind of retraining in their neural networks and still combining data from the cropped image and the full non-binned 48MP of the sensor, and somehow, despite the fact that the cropped image is neither 12MP nor 48MP at that point, they're outputting a 24MP image, and as far as I understand it's not just a simple up or downscaling. I wish they told us more about the exact image pipeline for what they're doing with 1.2x and 1.5x that they're not doing with all the other zoom ranges, and for the 24MP capture, but it's not *just* a digitally zoomed in image.

    I left the iPhone at iPhone 4, but after being sucked back into the Apple ecosystem by the M1/M2 chips Macbooks and iPads the 15 Pro might just do it for me. That Log looks absolutely insane and as someone with a lot of experience in colour grading and especially using proper log colour spaces this is so exciting. Thanks so much for the in-depth analysis and beautiful showcase versus just "it shoots log just like Hollywood does" with some bad example footage as most other YTers are doing. It's incredible how much better the video can look with the proper colour spaces

      Don't get manipulated by the ecosystem. The benefits are small.

      This is not so much a recent thing. Video is one of the things iPhone has been significantly better at from the very beginning.

    In the UK we have orange streetlights in rural areas during the night. I noticed significantly less lens flair with the 15promax than the 14 promax, far less disturbance from any light source and the resulting image looked less harshly sharpened

    I've retrained myself to get the phone in the position (landscape) to take a photo while simultaneously hitting the action button (with my index finger) to launch the camera. It's tough to break habits but I found this better than launching it on screen and then rotating it to landscape to snap.

    Great work. The action mode plus the 5X zoom was amazing. Having a hard time deciding between iphone 15 pro or pro max. The size still bothers me.
    But the camera capability in promax makes everything complicated. I would love to get the 5X zoom.
    Anyway, Wishing you a wonderful time with family and friends in Copenhagen.
