As a VFX artist and supervisor I can confirm, that what you say is true. The ony factor in compression is the perspective, that is created by the distance to the subject. If you take a widangle shot from the same distance as your portrait, how could there be parallax (movement between foreground and background) if you didn't change your position, right? If you move towards something, the things farther away get smaller at a slower rate as the things closer to you, so the background objects look smaller on an image in comparison to the foreground object, than if you're further away.
I don’t understand.. are you saying that a 5x crop is the same as a 5x lens? Since distance to subject stays the same…. So if you have enough megapixels then you can zoom as much as you want??
@@kevinvo6144 Only in terms of compression. The depth of field and other lens characteristics will be different. But how much of a difference it makes depends on the specific examples you‘d be comparing.
@@stalman I dont get the negativity around multiple focal lengths on the iPhone 15 Pro. Recording to an external device and LOG are by far my favorite new features. It’s incredible to think that someone can buy one of these phones and tackle multimedia projects, from start to finish.
Been following you for a while with another of my accounts, your chill energy is unique and your observations devoid of unnecessary drama. It's relaxing and informative, that's rare in our culture now. Keep being you and more influence to you.
This is definitely the only video videographers and photographers need to watch. Record direct to USB devices is the most game-changing feature, because it means to save $500+ on an iPhone with larger storage. Suddenly you have a log-capable camera for a little over $1000 which is also your phone. And also, as an iOS developer, I can say that iOS 17 brings a TON of new features when it comes to connecting the phone / iPad (which already has USB-C) to photo / video equipment. It's clear Apple has shifted from trying to sell you the most expensive phone just for the sake of it, and moving towards really Pro features. Great video Tyler.
Dude it's the same freaking phone as the 14 Pro. Same Sony IMX803 camera. You guys are literally buying the same freaking hardware it's pathetic lol. The A17 is a slightly up clocked A16 with some ray tracing cores lol. This is getting pathetic
10:40 yes, I researched the subject of compression extensively two years ago, and yes, it is absolutely totally dependent on the distance between the subject and the camera, not the focal length. You can actually test that. Take a portrait using a 75mm lens, then take the same photo using a 24mm lens and crop into the subject. The compression will be exactly the same.
Not completely, because if you put subjects on the side on a wide-angle lens and then crop in afterwards, they will look distorted. But for centered subjects, yes, it’s the same. Not many people seem to get that it’s just about the distance :). An APS-C 35mm is totally equivalent to a 50mm’ish fullframer.
Wow! The action mode footage you got from 5x zoom on the statue…. Can’t believe with that amount of shakiness and zoom you got such smooth motion…. Always wanted stabilize in post but never spent the time to learn. That’s a hidden game changer feature for me, I love zoom and motion when recording in an iPhone
@@ThiHaGadgets action mode is available on all 14 and 15 models including non pro 😁 I’m not sure if the pro models will do it better because of extra lens though?
To answer you question about focal length ( I am a vfx supervisor ) you are absolutely correct (+/- lens distortions happening on wide lenses close to subjects that add even more to the effect). But yes it’s correct. A zoom is technically a crop, the face changing is because if you compensate the crop by changing your distance to the subject then it’s a perspective change. That’s what happens in a vertigo shot basically.
People often don't understand the difference in perspective distortion vs lens distortion. What he talks about is 100% perspective distortion. Lens distortion is independent of the focal length and could also be 100% digitally corrected or added if you want that. The goal of all rectilinear lenses is basically to have 0 lens distortion

Randomly fell over this video after watching a bunch of iPhone 15 videos, and all of the sudden i was like hold up, those pictures are taken where i live! Beautiful copenhagen :)
In the UK we have orange streetlights in rural areas during the night. I noticed significantly less lens flair with the 15promax than the 14 promax, far less disturbance from any light source and the resulting image looked less harshly sharpened
Seems like the regular 15 is good enough for me. I love 15’s colors but I’m not sure if its cameras are good enough. I’m not a pro either and seeing your photos made me realize that they’re good enough for my needs.
Best use for the action button is linking it to a shortcut. What are you doing often? Opening Lightroom/photos, automatically transferring/saving of all photos from the last 24h to a folder, etc can all be linked to the action button The limit to shortcuts is your creativity!
Really helpful, thank you!! I just ordered a 15 Pro Max this afternoon and am so excited! I'm moving up from a 12 Pro Max and can't wait to try out these new features.
Thank you, I was waiting for this. If you create a (yet) more detailed "after a while" review, I would suggest making two. One for the 15 and one for the Pro. They are really for two different types of users. The regular 15 user likes the features (action mode, low light, 24MPs) but wants the camera (phone) to do the work. The 15 Pro user may want that as well but is looking for a professional camera as well which Apple now really offers.
Thanks for the informative video. This morning, I was in tears because my very old phone was finally broken. I've had a photography hobby for years, but I've never really used my phone for it. Now, I'm getting eager for some new experiences. I already shoot in raw most of the time and I will almost certainly use the log feature for video - at least on occasion.
Dang this made us miss Copenhagen. Pumped about being about to shoot in LOG. That action mode is not bad at all...might not even bring an action camera anymore for our secondary camera. Thanks for the review, Tyler!
I searched for a iphone camera review. This is the best bit of YT I've seen for a while, all the others where people giving an opinion, or not really knowing what they were talking about. This one was so much better. I still think those "focal length" are just marketing blurb. (and unintended side effect: I really, really want to go to Copenhagen now)
I actually like using the action button to launch the camera app. Compared to the camera button on the home screen it saves you two actions to complete. For example. In the scenario of a locked phone. You have to: 1 press power button to activate screen 2 press camera button on the screen With the action button you just press it and can immediately start shooting by pressing it again. It’s just a bit faster and easier. And to some degree this also applies for when you’re in an app. As someone who likes street photography. This small time saving feature can actually really help out capturing these “decisive moments” we hunt for.
Thank you for the unbiased and honest review. I hope that Apple takes into consideration views of like-minded professional photographer's like yourself and of other reviewers too especially, that their HDR 5 needs a bigger shift in the processing of darker parts of the images (1.50~2.20 min mark). And yes, some of us do feel the same too that this wasn't the big jump that we were hoping for. I hope Apple would send some tweaks/fixs/upgrades towards the ip15 based on the above observations. I was really looking forward to getting the ip15 pro but have stopped short, after seeing many such reviews pointing out the very same issues observed. Btw, I love the action mode and the portrait mode. Common Apple, you can do better!
12:26 You just sold Action Mode in a way Apple could never. They didn't even mention it this year. I had no idea you could do this with such good results.
As always, amazing review! That photo at 2:01 could have tricked me it came from a mirrorless, only the inconsistencies of the blur on plant gave it away
Thank you for making this useful video. There are many people made "unbox" video but I didn't find anyone review about Camera on iPhone 15/ 15 Plus. This is exactly what I need. Thanks
I've been using a 14 Pro Max for nearly a year and I'm unlikely to upgrade this year. However, I like the concept behind the small crops to 28mm and 35mm in-camera, and that's tempting. I'm with you as regards the telephoto camera - I'm very happy with 77mm, and for me the gap between 48mm and 120mm is too great (I have a separate mirrorless system purely for focal lengths > 70mm). In an ideal world I'd like a 48mp 75mm (equivalent) sensor with 1.5x and 2x in-camera crops - 112mm & 150mm - in-camera.
The gap between the 24mm and the 120mm on the 15 Pro Max is crazy. 48mm is also cropped as this is a binned 48MP model, not a “real pixel” 48MP lens. Would have been much better to keep 7mm / 3x (or even 50mm / 2x) than to use digital cropping all the way between 24mm and 120mm. Most people take many more 50mm or 77mm photos than 120mm photos.
A great video that has made me want to explore videography on my new iPhone 15 Pro. One question for a rank amateur, what is the attachment clamped around your phone that is holding the SSD holder? - there’s no link that I can find, but it looks small, sturdy and very portable. I’d like to get one!
Great video on camera. Which one would you recommend? I am not a pro photographer, but the $200 difference in price does not justify it, as I didn't find much difference in features between the iPhone 15 and Pro .
Great work. The action mode plus the 5X zoom was amazing. Having a hard time deciding between iphone 15 pro or pro max. The size still bothers me. But the camera capability in promax makes everything complicated. I would love to get the 5X zoom. Anyway, Wishing you a wonderful time with family and friends in Copenhagen.
5:59 that’s really interesting. I find the lockscreen camera button to be particularly awkward and frustrating to reach. It’s slightly less awkward with my right hand, but I usually have my phone in my left hand. With either hand, anything that close to the bottom requires me to shift the phone up to reach it, holding it more precariously instead of with the center of mass firmly centered in my hand.* I have relatively long hands (typically wear men’s XL gloves; can span a 14th on the piano), so it’s not _just_ a matter of hand size. I think part of it is cases-I almost never use a case because the phone is already too big so the last thing I want is more bulk**. But I think handedness has a big impact, too. If I grab my phone naturally, without thinking about it, with my right hand, the mute switch is really awkward to reach. Even volume-up is a small stretch, with only volume down being conveniently located. (And power is _in_ conveniently located directly under my thumb, meaning I frequently press it by accident. If I ran the zoo, the volume buttons and mute switch/action button would be lower down and the power button would be significantly higher up, so that no two buttons are at the same height on opposite sides of the phone. But if I grab my phone naturally with my _left_ hand, all the buttons are in good places: volume buttons are under my thumb, mute switch is easily reached, pointer finger rests just below the camera bump, and the rest of my fingers wrap around the phone safely below the power button, with no risk of pressing it accidentally (but I can easily reach it if I want to). * The dictation button is similarly frustrating, because I most often want to dictate when I’m in a situation that I don’t have two hands and/or want to keep a particularly firm grip on my phone. Which I can’t do and also hit the dictation button one-handed. ** and the extra bulk of a case often makes it harder for me to keep a firm grip while using the phone one-handed, so while a case makes it less likely the phone is damaged when dropped, it also makes it more likely I will drop it in the first place. At least since they got huge-never used a case with the 4/5/SE, and never dropped them.
This is a top notch review. I’m not a photography expert and by watching your video I was able to finally understand many technical concepts. Thanks! 🙏 Hats off to you 👏

Or maybe he works in Apple’s design department and just teased the upcoming camera control 😂
5:55 Brother, you heard a new thing from Apple people, they did not put the action button down but they gave a new button 😂😂😂
Saving this for later as i havnt watched this but thank you! for including the non pro 15. I couldnt find a single camera review of the regular 15
Best use for the action button is linking it to a shortcut. What are you doing often? Opening Lightroom/photos, automatically transferring/saving of all photos from the last 24h to a folder, etc can all be linked to the action button
The limit to shortcuts is your creativity!
Really helpful, thank you!! I just ordered a 15 Pro Max this afternoon and am so excited! I'm moving up from a 12 Pro Max and can't wait to try out these new features.
Yes! Loved seeing what you were able to do with the log footage, amazing stuff.
Awesome video bro! You crushed this
Incredibly well-done video, Tyler. Super informative and easy to follow. Production quality is incredible!
I'm waiting every year for you camera review ... hands down the best iPhone camera reviews on YT! :)
This is a high level review of cameras of the iPhone 15 pro (& max).
You just got a new subscriber.
As always Tyler, intelligent, comprehensive, and stylish content
Thank you, I was waiting for this. If you create a (yet) more detailed "after a while" review, I would suggest making two. One for the 15 and one for the Pro. They are really for two different types of users. The regular 15 user likes the features (action mode, low light, 24MPs) but wants the camera (phone) to do the work. The 15 Pro user may want that as well but is looking for a professional camera as well which Apple now really offers.
Great video - and welcome to Denmark, hope you had a nice time here 😊🇩🇰
Yes! Thank you!
Thanks for the review, Tyler!
dude you predicted the future with the camera button!!! Amazing video!
Bros a genius. Predicted the new camera control button
Sir, you were ahead of your time with the "Shutter button" idea.
Great video, could have listened to this for twice the length. Fingers crossed for a podcast episode on everything you talked about here.
You have to:
1 press power button to activate screen
2 press camera button on the screen
With the action button you just press it and can immediately start shooting by pressing it again. It’s just a bit faster and easier. And to some degree this also applies for when you’re in an app.
As someone who likes street photography. This small time saving feature can actually really help out capturing these “decisive moments” we hunt for.
Your showcasing the action mode is actually excellent compared to other youtube reviewer.
I just picked up my iPhone 15 pro. I'm super excited to shot with it! Keep up the great work!
Same camera hardware as the 14 Pro Sony imx803
Those log videos look stunning. Great great video, thanks for making it.
Great to see the improvements the iPhone 15 camera got. The pro features look useful and well considered but the quality jump across the board is 👌🏽
12:26 You just sold Action Mode in a way Apple could never. They didn't even mention it this year. I had no idea you could do this with such good results.
A guide on how to work with log footage would be awesome and much appreciated!
Did you like the trip to Denmark? 🇩🇰 Best regards Benjamin from Denmark now living in Montreal Canada 🇨🇦😊
The log footage is fantastic, wow
As always, amazing review! That photo at 2:01 could have tricked me it came from a mirrorless, only the inconsistencies of the blur on plant gave it away
Thank you for making this useful video. There are many people made "unbox" video but I didn't find anyone review about Camera on iPhone 15/ 15 Plus. This is exactly what I need. Thanks
Glad it helped!
you were right about the action button
now it is on the same placement where you have told it should be a year back ✌
6:01. Did he predicted Camera Control on the iPhone 16?
Hugely informative. Copenhagen early autumn is lovely, no harsh sunshine (when the sun does appear!)
It’s been beautiful here, the sun just comes in and out all day
I've been using a 14 Pro Max for nearly a year and I'm unlikely to upgrade this year.
Ah man. You were close to my office, would love to have had a chat🎉 great review
BEST REVIEW SO CALM AND FORMAL.. and has a good style..haha
Great review. Thank you. Please can you share information about the components in the rig you used (in addition to the Kondor Blue SSD holder)?
With either hand, anything that close to the bottom requires me to shift the phone up to reach it, holding it more precariously instead of with the center of mass firmly centered in my hand.*
I have relatively long hands (typically wear men’s XL gloves; can span a 14th on the piano), so it’s not _just_ a matter of hand size.
How does one attach the universal SSD mount to the iPhone 15 pro max? Thanks! Awesome Review‼️❤️
Found this video occasionally. But i am surprised by it's details, very good work!
This is a top notch review. I’m not a photography expert and by watching your video I was able to finally understand many technical concepts. Thanks! 🙏 Hats off to you 👏
Best iPhone 15 camera review by far. Thank you.
Is the iPhone screen yellow/green tint issue that began with OLEDs (iPhone X, 12, 13, 14) finally fixed?
Excellent review, sir. I really enjoyed your technological know-how photography-wise. Very informative!

This was an amazing video. I really like the time you took to research and put this together!
That footage is amazing. I'm still on the 13 Pro Max, currently shooting a short with it using FilMic Pro. I need the 15 using BMD Camera app. Great vid, by the way. Thanks!
This convinced me to buy an iPhone 15 pro! Thank you, needed such an in-depth video.
That action mode shot! 🤯
After clicking a selfie on my 15 plus, the picture due to processing gets dark and blurry and also quality downgrades, what should I do now
Nice seeing you in Copenhagen. Hope you enjoyed your stay.
2:22 "if you're upgrading from an iphone 12 or 13, this jump to 48MP will make a visible difference." that is what I came to this video for coming from a 12 pro max. thank you
I’m guessing 12 pro max to 15 plus?
Really important for my work. I shoot adult films and need the greatest camera.
@@AZ-gs6hj 👀
I shoot adult films as well, I need the best camera that has the best sweat and cream resistance. And it's the Pixel 8 Pro. Cause the iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro have the same main camera hardware. Sony IMX803
Wow, great review. That RED app footage looked pretty amazing. If someone told me that was from an iPhone I wouldn't have believed them prior to this video review.
THANK YOU for the action mode sample you showed with the statue! Watching videos of people’s backs while they run is… incredibly boring. I finally have some use for action mode.
Looking forward to try out the log shooting and external storage video recording with it. Also the USB-C is such a huge game changer here too. Thanks for showing it very well.
Lol just yesterday apple sheep were saying USBC wasn't a big deal now they are drooling over it 🤤 15 Pro and 14 Pro have the same imx803 camera lol have fun buying the same phone with your magical USBC lol
Thanks for this amazing review Tyler! Great as always
Filming a iPhone 15 review in one the best cities in the world (my city) - awesome!!
Hy photographer,
Base s23 or base iphone 15? Which has best camera?
