      I'm from southeastern VA, so we usually get snow in the first few months of the year. Our dog and two puppies came from a family member in Florida, so they've never seen snow. I can't wait to see how they react to it! Our last dog loved snow even though she HATED getting even her paws wet normally. XD

    My malamute used to be able to handle -40 c temperature but now at -10 and below his paws gets too cold so I am getting him dog boots to keep his paws warn. I made the mistake of neglected his paws over the years so i think his paws have completely dried which is why i think he is no longer able to handle cold climate.

    I normally don't comment on videos but I found your video full of useful information and presented in a straightforward way. My dog's dad is a black lab and mom a golden doodle, born in the winter and has always loved the snow. Her paws, like any dog, can be sensitive to salt, but recently it has been really cold here (-25C) and displayed the same kind of behavior with no salt around. I did put bag balm before we went out but it didn't help. I think I will take your advice and invest in some booties as a last resort only for when it's really cold (which isn't that often in Ontario). Thanks again, I appreciate your insight and advice!

    Thanks for info and tips. My dog and I enjoy snow hiking in California. I apply Musher's Secret on my dog's paws before a hike, and reapply through out hike.
    Yeah, my dog lost some booties on trail. Lol.

    Great info as I prepare for a backcountry ski trip in Maine. My large dog has big spaces between foot pads where ice balls form. She bites at them. I think it is like having rocks in shoes-very uncomfortable. Thanks for some good ideas for addressing this.

    Are border collies able to handle walking in the snow too?? I noticed my border collie never complains about pain even when she was playing and hit her head hard on furniture accidentally, insane impacts but she acted like it was nothing so I can imagine this dog would wait till is too late to start showing signs of problems. I walk her outside in the snow but I limit the time a lot, like 20m tops

      It really depends on the individual dog and what they have been conditioned to. I know plenty of border collies that work sheep in the snow, so I don’t think it should be a problem based on the breed. That said, a lot of border collies are like your own and mask their pain which makes it difficult to tell sometimes. Maybe consider using boots if you will be out for an extended amount time of time, especially if it will be below 20°F

    Hi there, I have a Barbet who loves all seasons, we live in Alberta Canada. We live in one of the sunniest locations in Canada, and we do get snow. I really appreciated your information, Thankyou.
    We use booties, and I have used paw balm, as a matter of fact, I’m looking up some YT videos right now, to DIY! Any recipe you recommend to DIY?

      Great question! I actually usually just buy our paw wax, typically the mushers secret brand. A friend did give me some homemade salve made with marigold, but I don't know what recipe she used. Sorry not to be more helpful, but if you find a great recipe I'd love a link!

      Hey Ken, I live in Calgary and make my own paw balm. I found the recipe here:
      www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/how-to-make-your-own-paw-balm-for-winter/
      It takes less than 10 minutes to make and all the ingredients can be found on Amazon. I bought round aluminum tin containers and store the extra ones in a closet for future use.

    Hi there! thank you SM for making the video. I have a female border collie 1yo who's 15kg (a bit small than others), she loves the snow but I noticed her paw started to breed from the last couple walks in the snow... I am not sure if it's frost bite, or sharp ice or just a sharp obect hurting her paw while I didn't see. I am not sure if it's the cold (we're living in the -1 to -5 more of less because the winter she was totally fine. Should I consider getting her dog boots?

    • @TheMostImportantStep
      @TheMostImportantStep  Год назад +1

      It can’t hurt to try the boots and see if it helps! It’s hard to know what the cause is without seeing the foot/conditions, so you might also consider consulting a vet if it continues to be a problem

    I'm using some boots on my dog, and eh really likes to go on deep snow, and the top of the boots where we have the velcro starts gathering a bit a snow and I need to constantly keep removing it.
    Is there something that I can do to avoid that? Or is it fine for him to have the boots like that? Peharps could also be the boots model?

    • @TheMostImportantStep
      @TheMostImportantStep  10 месяцев назад +1

      The biggest problem I would think is that the boots will get wet faster (especially if you are using water proof boots). You could try making some sort of gaiter, but there are also some boot models that go higher up the leg.
      I wouldn’t be too worried about it as long as it isn’t super cold and you/your dog are moving around a fair amount. Of course, your dog will probably also tell you if it bothers him too!

    Wisconsin girl here snow care is a must 🙌. Especially since my pup is a chihuahua and Italian greyhound mix. So she does get cold 🥶.
