  • You've found something you love. It's natural to want to understand what makes it work, what makes it so good, so that you can improve your own work. Just like a succulent dish, there's a recipe to every great piece of art. You can find it when you take the work, and break it down into smaller pieces. In this video, Chris shows you how to find the five major ingredients in a piece of art, so you can decode the power of anything. This was a part of a longer session Chris did called "How To Learn Anything", where he talked about the three essential skills to surviving in the 21st century.

    So, I went back to all my favorite artworks and designs and tried doing this on some of them and I am mind blown because 1) I realized that I am not as articulate as I thought I was 2) I've noticed that there so much more elements and/or details in the artwork/design than I first thought
    Thank you for this my mind has been blessed with something new

    WOW. I absolutely love this not ONLY as a way to find inspiration but also just to take the time to appreciate art in the first place. I love art but I can honestly say I’ve never taken the time to truly focus on one piece like this before. Really blown away, so cool.

    This is crucial. It's similar to how reading helps with your writing, reading and vocabulary. When breaking down art looking, breaking down and getting to the core of what you find visually interesting is as just as important as the art itself. Great video guys!

      suprising they don't teach these things in art school, or companies training junior designers

    • @thestellarelite
      @thestellarelite 3 года назад +3

      @@youlikeanh They certainly taught it at my art school. I took graphic design but switched to illustration but a large chunk of electives and even core courses were art history studying/interpreting. Even got to see some of what I studied in London and Paris that was even better. I'm glad for it too just need more time to actually do it in real life outside school!

    Excellent insights. As you mentioned in the video (paraphrasing here) you cannot replicate what you don't understand. Analysis (and then replication) is an incredibly under-rated method of becoming a great designer. This is common in visual arts and in music, but for some reason, it just isn't talked about much in design. Thank you for making the video!
