  • It's the end of an era. After decades of serving up delicious burgers, shakes, and fries in Bulgaria, the final McDonald's restaurant has closed its doors.
We take a look at how this iconic fast-food chain has been part of Bulgarian life for so many years in cities like Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv, and Sofia. We talk to some of the locals who will miss their beloved McDonald's, as well as the employees who served us all these years.
We look back at the burgers and shakes that made McDonald's so popular, and how it changed the fast-food landscape in Bulgaria.
It's time to say goodbye to McDonald's in Bulgaria. Join us for a look back at this unique part of Bulgarian history. #Bulgaria #Varna #Burgas #Plovdiv #Sofia

McDonald's was hype in the early 2000s, because like you said it was just coming over from the west in freshly liberated Bulgaria. and people, chill, he is talking about only that one in the center. theres still mcdrive and in the malls. its not like there isnt a mcds in Varna. 😂 i dont think the issue is with people not liking it, its just unreasonably expensive for what you get in quantity and quality. there are way better alternatives in hamburgers and doners locally.

Yes I associate it with happy meal toys of Lion King, Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Flubber, Pocahontas, Mulan etc. We went to the movies to see these shows and then also collected the toys from their accompanying happy meal sets.
Yeah, it's true. It's a bit different growing up in Sofia and not, I understand.
I started working at 16 during the mid 2000s and it already felt like it was dying back then. The massive hype was during the 90s, but correct probably mostly in the bigger cities.

@@TheRealRaygor Well, yeah as I said. It was a novelty for sure, it was cool to go there but it wasn't considered fancy. KFC opened one year earlier and wasn't considered fancy too.
Bulgaria wasn't some African tribe before 1989. There were McDonald's bootleg restaurants during the 1980s at least in Sofia, it's not like we didn't know what a hamburger and fries were. We just didn't know how the real McDonald's ones taste like, since we knew about them only from hollywood movies. Don't think of communist Bulgaria as some backwards society where people didn't know anything. We watched Star Wars when it got released, we saw Indiana Jones you name it. We listened to disco and wore haispray and flashy tracksuits during the 1980s etc. Bulgaria is also the first communist country to produce Coca Cola, this happened during the 1960s. We were making coke and Pepsi, and 5uese brands were common everywhere. We didn't have shortage of them like they did in the USSR for example. Bulgaria was a bit more open to the world compared to other communist countries.

Mcdonalds in Bulgaria is not only worse in taste and quality compared to Germany or Austria for example, but it's even more expensive. Last week I got a double cheeseburger in Sofia for 4 euros and a few days later I got one in Vienna for 2.60. Now consider the local wages and the fact that you can get a Kebab for less and it starts making sense why their restaurants are empty. It's like they are increasing margins just to stay afloat because of a catastrophic business model that's been driving the company into the ground for the past decade. I don't know how they dropped the ball so hard. Mcdonalds in Bulgaria used to be always full back in the day.

I think they started using low quality meat. I remember when KFC opened in Ruse in the 90's and the chicken was pretty high quality, but the prices were insane. Same with the McDonald's in Ruse so it closed very fast as people didn't want to pay 5-6 lv for a burger when you could buy way better food for cheaper. Couple a years ago tried the one in Turnovo and oh boy, the meat was terrible- processed and like a shoe in your mouth.

I love McDonalds, it's my favorite fast food restaurant. I am a costumer for 48 years! Also what some people say that it is artificial food is completely BS... I worked for a company in The Netherlands that checks everything from what goes in the food and everything else! This is a governmental institution... They test and control everything from all supermarkets and restaurants... For example, the hamburger in McDonald's is 100% PURE BEEF... If you don't like it and if you think it is to expensive that I can understand! But you can never compare homemade food with food from a fast food restaurant or basically and franchise chain of restaurants like Subway, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken or McDonald's!
I am a big fan of McDonald's and for sure the restaurant chain will stay in Bulgaria! 100% sure...👍😂🤣
