Then by the end he's a full-blown asshole and even he kind of knows it, when he's looking in the mirror. Great performance.
Idk...I wasn't around when fast-food was introduced. But my parents were (although the drive-up A&W existed at the time), and it was a big WTF? when they first encountered it. So you kind of have to replicate that feeling, which might require some overacting.
Fascinating that the director depicted this viewpoint of newness of it, about something already routine when I was born. What is it like for an adult who has never encountered such a thing. I can imagine it being like that. For me McDonalds, growing up, was like... a fact of life, just part of the landscape.
Huge props to them as well. Most of us had already experienced and know about the concept but presenting it still made me look in awe at the genius of it. It's tested to the max yet still something that you just can't help but stare at in wonder. Love this scene
The acting in this movie was just INCREDIBLE. I'd dare say to the point that even the one-off extras had star levels of talent. Ray's server does such a PHENOMENAL job clueing the audience in on just how phenomenal this is, while maintaining the everyday server persona. This film really is beautiful. Such a shame Ray is the reason McDonald's itself isn't anymore.
I feel like someone needs to remake the original McDonald's, just the way it was. Two burgers, one size fries and a bunch of drinks. No dine-in tables, just a walk-up window. I feel like it'd be a hit once more.
Notice how they only have like 2 burgers on the menu and I no custom orders. That's how they were so fast and fresh. Now its the same system but with 50 items of course its not always gonna be so fast so fresh
You can blame Subway for that actually. It's because of their influence that customers felt they could customize literally anything on the menu (which they nearly can) and so that slows down sandwhich assembly for literally everybody that has ordered. If one order takes 5 minutes to make, then that's 5 more minutes somebody else has to wait for their regular cheeseburger.
You do realize that all the ingredients of fast food chains are frozen, chemically boosted and old. you cant compare this in anyway to mc donalds then and now lol
neon thats what I'm saying. If they stuck to a 5 item menu it would be easy to maintain things fresh. I'm a former restaurant manager and I was scolded for not ordering frozen instead of fresh but maintained everything fresh and pre-prepped. So trust me I know where you're coming from but I'm right.
Daniel Lopez Im in the service industry as well worked half an dozen different bars, restaurants and venues. I agree with what you said about maintaining being hard if you have too many items. it also has to do with the branch out and global presence of branches. its not impossible to use fresh ingredients but mc donalds as many other fast food restaurants give up quality for speed, so yeah I agree
Food wasn't just good, it was all natural. Everything down to the buns and pickles was made with real ingredients, not fucking chemicals. I can promise you Dick and Mac never injected their burger buns with HFCS.
Honestly, I kinda don't blame him. The McDonald brothers didn't fully understand what they had, and they clearly didn't know how to franchise. At first he's pretty fair with the brothers, offering quick solutions for mass production. But the brothers are so set in their ways that it doesn't leave much room for expansion, and they're unwilling to take risks that could mean success. It may have seemed more like an evil act, but that's really just good business.
sneakyman555 the handshake agreement may never have really happened, the only account of that came from a nephew of the brothers, and the actual brothers never spoke negatively of the deal
they are the same the FDA regulated still 100 percent beef what kills is the HFC in the soda , also these are to be eaten in moderation with all the salt seasoning that goes in each burger
I find brilliant the way he reacts to his first McDonald, the whole "grab your lunch and go eat somewhere else" thing wasn't a thing yet. Seeing a precise and plausible way of how people react to something new always fascinates me. I'm always like "yeah now we are used to this but what would a grown human think about this if it was the first time he saw it ?"
At 4.50...Roy is inside the counter side as if he was already the owner.....talking to the McDonald brothers, who are outside the counter, as if they are just simple customers ...that was great foreshadowing !!!!!
I love the character of Ray Kroc in this movie (regardless of the validity of the story which I don't know enough about) because even when he's screwing over the brothers, he still cares about the restaurant, the system, and McDonald's as a company like when he's on the golf course yelling at the guy for changing the menu.
Lots of people forget that fast food has existed for centuries, it just had a massive resurgence during this period. Ancient Roman's had fast food counters.
ImSoAz , yes . It has been weeks since I had Hot coffee spilled on me ,from the Paper cup lid fit . I know what you mean . I saw this at the Movie Theatre and loved this scene .

I can’t get enough of this movie... makes me want a McDonald’s hamburger and just think about what it must have felt like in the 50s to experience this for the first time.
You see how he reacts to not getting a plate and silver ware. Just a bag and a paper cup with a straw. He probably felt weird about throwing the cup away being raised around cups that were washed and reused. Then he reacts to how people are eating on a bench without a table or walls and roof around him. I mean shit I bet if being a mobile barber could make you a millionaire in a couple of years everyone would be cutting hair. But these aren't those times anymore.
They were nt the babes in the woods , they appear to be in this movie. They got a million dollars a piece after taxes in the 60's, also Ray could never get them to cooperate.
They still got the bad end of the deal though. Where they made their mistake was they allowed ray krock to franchise the McDonald's name. In the movie they basically just blindly give him the McDonald's name (without realizing it) and that is correct. They did walk away millionaires but Ray krock walked away with the name which is worth much more today! And the brothers weren't exactly the best business men and Ray krock was much more smarter than them.
@@taitemarshall And who's to say the FDA cares what businesses do to their food, as long as it isn't poison? They allow High Fructose Corn Syrup to be used in just about everything, because it's cheap. But it's bad for your body. Worse than real sugar. HFCS has been banned in Europe, because they found it contributes to lower brain development in children if consumed on a large enough scale. But.. legal in America.
It's kinda their fault though. They didn't have the ambition or desire to make it into a billion dollar company. Ray Kroc did and he pushed it on the path to becoming one of the largest corporations on the planet. For all we know, someone else could have come along with the same idea and in the end they would have still put them out of business.

the movie is to entertain and exaggerate things for entertainment. the real story is the mcdonald brothers started their first fast food place in 1937, by 1941 they turned that into a drive in with car hop service. by 1948 they turned it into the speedy service system with a limited menu. that was so successful prior to their meeting with ray kroc the brothers were making $100,000 profit a year. ray kroc noticed that the brothers ordered 5 multi-mixers which was mind blowing for ray kroc. what type of place needed to churn out 40 milkshakes in one sitting. they meet. ray being very impressed called them begging to be their franchise agent. they worked together for 6 years until 1961 where ray had all these ideas and the brothers were more conservative didn't really think much of ray's ideas. the brothers offered ray if he wanted the whole business pay them $2.7 million. the brothers had no children and were getting old/tired what have you. ray buys them out. richard goes home to new hampshire. mac stayed in california died in 1971. richard having died in 1998 saying he had no regret in selling. he was a salt of the earth guy that as long as he was comfortable was more than content.
My grandmother would set up a massive ceramic Christmas village every year. A scale model of the original McDonald’s was a part of it. Seeing a recreation of it in this clip, even just briefly brought back a rush of wonder memories.
Yeah, because working 8 hours straight, only after a 35 minute break at the beginning of your shift, standing up the entire time, dealing with the rushes, being yelled at by old people, etc, puts you in a good mood. Omfg.

The grocery store in the background “Thriftown” was an actual grocery store we used to shop at as a kid. It is now a coworking space.
The part I don’t understand is why he was asking for silverware. Plates ok...he’s used to using a plate. But why on earth would he even ask for silverware. He ordered a burger and fries. Where does he normally eat that this requires silverware.
Brian Griffin - He actually says in the clip that it’s the best hamburger he’s ever had (1:42). So my guess is he knows what a burger is and how to eat it. Imo, that scene is ridiculous all around. I can understand why he’s shocked it was so fast, but then he acts like he’s never eaten food before. Where do I eat it? WTF?
I doubt he acted like that in real life. Movies probably just trying to say how revolutionary it was that it was a bag of food and you threw away the trash when your were done. Could have been portrayed better imo

There was a time where a mother with 3 kids would ask a man, by himself, if they could join him on a bench and it wasn't considered weird? Astonishing....
Makes sense when you think about it. After that they probably went home and cooked a casserole and played ball in the backyard. There wasn't all that much to poison their minds and averse them towards human interaction. Even with WW2.
I was thinking about that the whole time I was like dosen't the mother want to sit next to the man instead of having her kids do so
Not every man that's by themselves are creeps, somewhere along the line that's become the norm in society...it's truly sad.

It's interesting, because he's so likeable a person that you are rooting for him for half the movie, but then he starts to turn into an asshole and you still want to like him but you are having a hard time with it. Then by the end he's a full-blown asshole and even he kind of knows it, when he's looking in the mirror. Great performance.
@@eramirez5119 You forgot 'The Paper'
A legend in Kannada film industry once said, if you can make the audience hate you, that means you are a good actor.
I totally agree.
You'd get the assholes who don't understand and be pissed why they can't customize the shit out of it
We'll call it, "McDowell's".
It’s called In-N-Out
The oldest McDonald's in Downey still has that system, down to the original Golden Arches architecture.
Whenever I go it's never fast or fresh

Putting aside the fact that the food was probably ungodly good, can we all also agree that their mascot Speedy was superior to Ronald? 😌
Ronald was a scary fuck to me as a kid.
Food wasn't just good, it was all natural. Everything down to the buns and pickles was made with real ingredients, not fucking chemicals. I can promise you Dick and Mac never injected their burger buns with HFCS.
Remember that moon character they used to have as a McDonald's character. He had better reaction to kids than Ronald McDonald
Bastard then goes on to steal the entire company
Honestly, I kinda don't blame him. The McDonald brothers didn't fully understand what they had, and they clearly didn't know how to franchise. At first he's pretty fair with the brothers, offering quick solutions for mass production. But the brothers are so set in their ways that it doesn't leave much room for expansion, and they're unwilling to take risks that could mean success. It may have seemed more like an evil act, but that's really just good business.

They still got the bad end of the deal though. Where they made their mistake was they allowed ray krock to franchise the McDonald's name. In the movie they basically just blindly give him the McDonald's name (without realizing it) and that is correct. They did walk away millionaires but Ray krock walked away with the name which is worth much more today! the real story is the mcdonald brothers started their first fast food place in 1937, by 1941 they turned that into a drive in with car hop service. by 1948 they turned it into the speedy service system with a limited menu. that was so successful prior to their meeting with ray kroc the brothers were making $100,000 profit a year. ray kroc noticed that the brothers ordered 5 multi-mixers which was mind blowing for ray kroc. what type of place needed to churn out 40 milkshakes in one sitting.
they meet. ray being very impressed called them begging to be their franchise agent.
they worked together for 6 years until 1961 where ray had all these ideas and the brothers were more conservative didn't really think much of ray's ideas. the brothers offered ray if he wanted the whole business pay them $2.7 million. the brothers had no children and were getting old/tired what have you. ray buys them out. richard goes home to new hampshire. mac stayed in california died in 1971. richard having died in 1998 saying he had no regret in selling. he was a salt of the earth guy that as long as he was comfortable was more than content.

ezakustam I understand. But fast food restaurants had been around for 20 years before McDonalds was established. So they didn’t invent the experience. They streamlined and monopolized it.
Still, my point is that the way his reaction was portrayed in the film was kind of silly. It didn’t take a genius to figure how to eat, especially considering he was surrounded by dozens of people doing the same.
