Tzar kaloyan took varna back from the byzantenes in 1201 on 24 of March, than Easter day,the city was defended by the byzantenes ,very big garrison and supported by western mercenaries, thought to be the bravest empire soldiers of all ,kaloyan engineers build massive siege engines wide enough to cross over trenches, that's the reason the first tanks were build in ww1,but we did it 8 centuries ago.😃😁💪(big flex😃)...so the machines crossed the trench and in three days the city fell, kaloyan was short tempered person (when we found his grave the scientists found out that he had a big wound on the back of his head and this made him famously like a crazy person sometimes in one of this episodes he throw Latin emperor balduin from fortress tower)and throw all the defenders in the trench and walk with the siege engine from above they were buried alive, than the emperor(kaloyan, wich means John the beautiful, when he studied in constantinopol he was a big star in the city being 6 feet 7 inches high as all his family and older brothers Peter and asen, who real name was theodor -belgun(asen's name I mean)name himself the Roman slayer because byzantene emperor basil the second name himself the Bulgarian slayer he was famous for blinding 15 000 bulg soldiers during the rule of bulg emperor samuel, who was scary warrior king who fought with the eastern Roman's for almost half a century, his father komit Nikola was the ruler of Sofia reageon and their family was the leader of the Bulgarian resistance, komit means governor,so komit Nikola had four sons David, moses,Aaron and samuel.......kaloyan is also famous for defeating the undefeated Latin knights at the battle of adrianopol and destroyed their aura of invincibility, later defeated them one more time and captured their emperor ,the first emperor of the Latin empire balduin from flanders(today belgium)later the bulgarians with byzantene support expelled the latins from constantinopol and the Balkans as a whole forever, but this cost us both a big price because for revenge the Pope with genua and venice supported heavily the Turks with money and ships in order to destroy the Balkan tzardoms(Serbia also was tzardom in 14th century we made their prince emperor and their bishop patriarch,he is even buried in tarnovo, his name is st.Sava and he is the patron saint and protector of the Serbian people, they build big church in his name st sava church in Belgrade, also a Serbian saint king is burrien in saint nedelia church in sofia)....so the Turks conquered the Balkans(they would never make it without the Pope help,it is not easy to conquer three empires and numerous kingdoms and smaller state entities) and put to a hold the development of this part of Europe we were not allowed to build big and beautiful churches and homes ,to dress with beautiful clothes ,when we build the first big school in gabrovo the so called aprilov highschool the Turkish governor said who allow this infidels to build such beautiful and big building, you can Google the aprilov highschool it still stay.....I hope you like this history info it is good to know some thing about the country you live in and may be to surprise your bulg.wife with some knolidge....godbless and greetings from Vidin on the Danube, vidin name comes from the word bdia,or being awake ,staying vigilant being on the edge, all this because vidin was border town always and there we had big army formations, even vidin was a separate state and the town had been a capital when the Turks destroyed our statehood,in this time our state insignia was three lions arranged one under the another ,just as British flag is today and the Danish as well,we had the same flag in the 1300s.....Arabian traveler wrote that the emperor of Bulgaria royal guards had this symbol on their shields(how I dream to see this sight) and a German traveler also paint the sign of the kaizer (emperor)of bulgaria,he also mentioned that he was in three states named Bulgaria, the first with capital vidin, second with capital tarnovo(ternau in german)and the third with capital caliacra on the black sea,the last had a strong fleet with wich they inforced taxes on passing ships and even had deal with genua to build trade colonies in Italy..there were also many more smaller entities in Macedonia Aegean reageon thrace and moesia .....next time I will write you down more info if you like this......buy my friend

Our monasteries resemble fortresses, if you saw the rila monastery, troyan monastery, bachkovo, glojene mon.and many more they have high walls and defence towers,in rila monastery the tower is from the 10th century, the so called hrelio tower,in the past the monasteries were constantly attacked and they build their places as forts

You cannot mention gold in a monastery, because some of the monks are the so called bezsrebarnici,or literaly translated, the no-silver ones,or the silverless ,or people who refuse to own money, this is ancient way of life ,smth like hermit,or in bulgarian asket, asketism ,st.ivan of rila ,the protector and patron saint of Bulgaria was hermit monk and according to some scholars,a brother to our first emperor simeon the great, who is famous for fighting war on all bulgaria borders and won every one of them and build the flashy and classy new bulgarian capital of preslav,(which remains were very well preserved arround 1860,but the turks destroyed them to build railway, according to me on purpos)for wich the ancient authors wrote magnificient things that when a simple man enter the city is left speachless that things like that exist at all, with the city 16 meters,or more than 50 feet high walls and towers, simeon bulgaria was 750 000sq.km.or arround half a million miles500thousand miles big, inqluding ports on adriatic, black and the aegean seas,we had aegean teritorries, but the british gave them to greece after world war one, this are the lands east of tesaloniki,to the turkish border in the east, this is aegean bulgaria inqluding the island of tassos, where still bulgarian villages exist even today and many people still speak bulgarian but are affraid infront of the camera because the greeks oppressed them brutally if do so

Im late to this video but i want to point few things. First Bulgarians are very conservative ( the old gen ) anything outside of the norn is frowned upon. Like gay parades and things. Unlike in the past, nowadays you'll not be punched in the face but people will become very cold if you parade with the outside of the box beliefs. Second. don't try to argue children should be free to choose their sexualities and alike. This will not cut it regardless of how persuasive you think you are. Third. Respect the local culture and engage. You'll make friends and in Bulgaria friends means more than the odd invitation for a cuppa. We go above and beyond for those we hold dear. Fourth. We are not racist. However we judge you by your actions. And if you're a piece of excrement it will matter not if you're black, green or purple. Fifth. Try to learn some local words or / and phases. No matter how bad you think you'll sound ( and it's very likely you would) , no one will mock you for trying. On the contrary, you'll receive a lot of praise. Especially from the senior contingent . Peace and love brothers and sisters, who decide to enjoy a decent, and yet simple life in Bulgaria. Edit: fat fingers typos. Apologies.

3:30 -very negative opinion.. No, people are not rude here, some can be, but very rarely you'll meet someone like that. You can't just generalize. The tourist traps were something in the past I think. Now everywhere is equally expensive. Just avoid sketchy looking people and places in general and keep an eye on your belongings if you travel by bus or walking in crowds.
