- Junaid Jahangir discusses the current state of Muslims in the LGBTQ community, and what we can do for them moving forward. Dr. Junaid Jahangir is an Assistant Professor of Economics at MacEwan University. He has taught a wide variety of courses at the undergraduate level including Contemporary Canadian Economic Issues, Public Finance, Money and Banking, Labour Economics, Resource Economics, Quantitative Methods, apart from Microeconomic and Macroeconomic Theory. He is active in Edmonton interfaith circles through community presentations and has consistently published blogs and articles at Huffington Post, Edmonton Journal and Vue Weekly.
For over a decade, he has worked with Dr. Hussein Abdul Latif, a pediatric endocrinologist in Alabama to develop a renewed perspective of same-sex unions in Islamic law. His publications include a book chapter in the two-volume “Islam and homosexuality.” With Dr. Hussein Abdul Latif, he has co-authored papers that have appeared in the Journal of Homosexuality, Iran Namag, Theology and Sexuality and Oxford Islamic Studies Online. Their book "Islamic law and Muslim same-sex unions" was published in 2016 and was released in paperback in 2018. As a muslim who's felt confusion about this, it's nice to see this as a conversation in the making. I don't know if I agree with it but I do know that only Allah judges. It's not my place or any islamic institution's place to force a specific muslim to behave in their personal vision. Countless people came to the prophet (SAAW) discussing their sins and the companions have been described as feeling discomfort, but the Prophet (SAAW) never encouraged hate or ridicule of even the worst of people. I can't argue that problematic contextual interpretation has been a thorn in Islam's side, but just because something is interpreted in a certain way that you disagree with, it doesn't make it wrong. Maybe the Quran definitively was meant to read that Homosexuality is a sin. No one alive today is the absolute authority so all we can do is try to be respectful to the people who take a different path to ours because no one should be directing your trek except you.

I started off heavily disagreeing with him up until about the 5 minute mark. He does not make sweeping, over-generalizing statements and i can see the idea hes trying to preach. Indeed context is very important when it comes to understanding/interpreting the scripture. All i can say is this video gets a like from me for motivating me to do my own research on the subject of homosexuality in Islam. Thank you.

Bushra M It has multiple interpretations and we cannot know if it refers to homosexuality. Scholars aren’t sure if the narrative refers to greed, faithlessness or homosexuality. I don’t believe homosexuality was a thing in those days as it has only been medicalised (given a name) in living history.

The verse (Qur’an 26: 165-166) is the one that makes people think homosexuality is a sin.

If you look the verse in Arabic the word, that is translated as "Nay" or "But", used is 'Bal' which is a particle of digression.
"When it is followed by a proposition, the meaning of the digression is either the cancelling of what precedes or
transition of one object of discourse to another."
That means the proposition that "Do you approach males among the worlds And leave what your Lord has created for you
as mates?" is negated by 'bal' and "You are a people transgressing" is affirmed.
The verse literally means that they were not just simply 'coming to men instead of women' but they were transgressing beyond that.
So, this leaves to 2 possibilities:
1. Coming to men instead of women is WRONG (is a sin) but people of Lut were transgressing even beyond that.
Or
2. Coming to men instead of women is OKAY(not a sin) but people of Lut were transgressing beyond that.
What do you think about it?

If you look the verse in Arabic the word, that is translated as "Nay" or "But", used is 'Bal' which is a particle of digression.
"When it is followed by a proposition, the meaning of the digression is either the cancelling of what precedes or
transition of one object of discourse to another."
That means the proposition that "Do you approach males among the worlds And leave what your Lord has created for you
as mates?" is negated by 'bal' and "You are a people transgressing" is affirmed.
The verse literally means that they were not just simply 'coming to men instead of women' but they were transgressing beyond that.
So, this leaves to 2 possibilities:
1. Coming to men instead of women is WRONG (is a sin) but people of Lut were transgressing even beyond that.
Or
2. Coming to men instead of women is OKAY(not a sin) but people of Lut were transgressing beyond that.

For the majprity of his life he hd only wife who he loved and was devoted to as is the majority of ppl then and now. Then a few years after that he was allowed to marry other women and aometimes instructed by Allah to marry some to show how to treat your spouses with respect, how to be patient to help those women out to show that widows or women of other cultures are just as worthy as long as they are Muslim for marriage.
