> I personally love weighted ball throws. I use them to slow things down, to speed things up, ... I’ve used a tennis ball to a 1.5k ball and everything in between. Great video Scott, first I've watched but I'll check out some others too. I'm glad you responded to throwing balls as a training aide. I threw at school for a year, held the school record for a short time, then played waterpolo and baseball exclusively after that and threw only twice (literally two throws) since the year in the school team. Last month I started some javelin drills for some fitness and mobility training. I set a distance target which I just couldn't reach, even after trying all the old tips I learned. In the end, one day I just took a baseball to the field and threw that instead (and its best landing point 20% further than the javelin, I might add). And do you know what, next time I threw my javelin, I blitzed my previous records by about 10%. And the early throws were so much better (normally I need about 10 throws to get into my mojo). I think it was transferring the wrist action when throwing a baseball into the javelin throw that helped --- your thoughts? When I compare the videos of the record throws by Uwe Hohn and Jan Zelezny, Jan has much (relatively) longer and lighter arms than Uwe, he seems to get far more whip/sling action out of his throws.
Thanks for watching!! I played baseball/softball a lot growing up and other sports but always enjoyed throwing stuff. Throwing a variety of things as well as doing other sports helps so much with coordinating your body. The wrist can certainly contribute to better throws in the javelin but also other implements. I hope you keep up with it. There’s something special about watching a good javelin throw!
@@coachhalley Great, thanks for the reply. Yeah, "throwing stuff" - that is instinctive if you have the knack. I got shown a boomerang when grade 12 - I still have a couple. They are perfect to practice the whip action action, and if you are good (and the wind light), you only need a small space actually. Today it was back to throwing the baseball, cricket ball and a high density rubber ball same size and weight of the cricket ball. It seems that alternating between Javelin and the denser balls is in itself a good drill too (I found that doing "bricks" training with 5 minute alternation of running and cycling - did wonders for my triathlon fitness). I think that this is a good topic to investigate further, I'm transcribing all my throw results from today - but I think I've improved another 10-15% over the 6 trial throws of last weekend.
Superb...its always great to hear your version of how to get the best out of your throws , I've told all of my athletes to watch your videos because I think like you..I myself threw for 17 years had 16 years out of the sport and then fell back in love with it...and boy its changed.. especially how easy it is to find videos and images on the Internet compared when I was learning I had to buy books and vhs videos through athletic magazines. Again great work Scott 👏
Thank you! I really appreciate that! I’m glad you’re back into it. Athletes and coaches have more resources now and so easy to access. Times definitely have changed. I still have a VHS tape that Brian Crouser created many years ago that I watched the night before every competition.
Great video coach!!! Do you think can you show us some specific javelin mobility/stretches and a in depth breakdown of the crossover phase, focusing on the hip/feet position throughout it?
Thank you! I appreciate the compliment. For another video, I’ll probably have to find a model as I have not been training for throwing and don’t have the flexibility I would recommend for athlete’s specifically training for javelin throwing. I’ll definitely add it to my list though. Thank you!!
Thank you coach, I saw your short about it a few days ago and I was waiting for the video! I think I'll try your advice at the end to force the different kind of throw to feel it because when it's in the air I can see the result but the reason without recording is sometimes hard to spot. If I develop a better control ,it will be definitely helpful. Thanks again for the great content!
As always, I’m happy to help. Definitely play around with it. Learning through just playing around is always fun. I actually worked on this very thing with several of my athletes today.
Really enjoy watching through your series of videos. Wish I would have had coaching like this when I was in high school, graduated in “96”. I’ve started throwing again in the masters meets, and must say…I’ve always been all arm while throwing. Appreciate your break down, and explanation of drills. Breaking bad habits, is tough…maybe even tougher at this age!! Lol. What do you suggest for strengthening exercises for an older generation?
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback as well. I should definitely do something about us older guys working out and throwing at a masters level. I’m trying to get back into it as we speak. It’s tough to find the time so maybe it will be a training program for folks with limited time…
@@coachhalley That would be great! I see you won state in 97…that’s awesome! I was ranked #2 for 3a, but somehow had my worst series at state. Missed finals by about 6”. Hi Mr. Halley, I’m a highschool javelin thrower and I was wondering if you had any ideas/ common reasons for always throwing far to the left ( right handed)
This can be a number of things like opening too early, stepping to the left (“in the bucket”), over rotating and in some cases, changing direction on the runway. I’m sure there are many ways to throw left but it may be hard to determine without seeing you throw. Post a video link and I’ll take a look 👍🏻
Coach, I am so glad that, as a subscriber, I am notified when you post a new video! On Thursday, my best high school senior thrower recorded two PB throws (40.52 & 41.86 meters), but both throws landed close to the right sector line. I am perplexed as to why, since in practice, she does throw straight. Rather than try to make changes before next week’s Regional Qualifier meet (to go the State Meet), I was thinking that I should have her hug the left runway line (right handed thrower) or approach at a diagonal right to left. After watching your explanation regarding javelin flight this morning, I am thinking that she might try the American grip in place of her European grip. Any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated! Please keep doing what you do. Sincere thanks!
Thanks for subscribing! I truly appreciate it!! Congratulations also on the success of your thrower. Hopefully they continue to get better. As far as the sector throw goes, sometimes kids just need a target. Since I don’t know your athlete, I’m not sure it that would work. I’m always surprised how well kids can adjust when you leave out the technical stuff and tell them what the destination is. I would recommend playing with your ideas at practice and communicate with your thrower so they have a game plan before the big meet. Keep us posted. Would be great to see a video posted too. Take care!
How does the wind affect your throwing? If it's a headwind, are you trying to throw it a bit lower and vice versa with rearwind, would you try to aim a bit higher at all?
A headwind may require a lower angle and a tailwind may require a high flat throw but I would figure out the wind during warmups and by watching your competitors flights. If you’ve practiced controlling the javelin and are skilled, you’ll be able to make adjustments as you go. I think this is an area that many throwers don’t spend enough time practicing. A good flight should result in a longer more efficient throw.
I personally love weighted ball throws. I use them to slow things down, to speed things up, to ignore the javelin flight while working on other things, to communicate feeling, to exaggerate movements and definitely more. I’ve never gone over a 1.5k ball though. I’ve used a tennis ball to a 1.5k ball and everything in between.
Super helpful video just have a question about goal setting for javelin. I'm 19 and started throwing jav 3 weeks ago. I threw 40 meters recently and Im just wondering what would a realistic goal be for next season? I've never played a throwing sport like baseball or football so I feel like I should have quite a lot of room for improvement. Would 50+ meters be unrealistic?
Goal setting is really important. Not only for season distance but for each practice. Set short term goals that are technical goals like hitting a position a number of times in practice or a goal of feeling a rhythm a number of times or simply doing a number of reps. Sometimes big goals are too far away to reach unless you set little goals that will get you there. As far as distance each season, in the early stages, 4 meters can be achieved but bigger is very possible too. Start by setting goals and documenting your practices. A journal can be a very valuable tool.
@@coachhalley Thanks for the reply I'll keep all that in mind. I'm starting to make short term goals for my block and upper body positioning. Just threw 43 meters today thanks to your video on controlling the flight of the javelin and some coaching from a training partner.
I’ve seen that a lot. Changing the grip as you move down the runway or even during the strike is tough to fix. To fix this issue, you’ll need to put your focus only on the grip and how it feels during the approach and how it feels when you release the javelin. Ignore flight, angles, the block or anything else until the grip is a habit. This might take a few hundred throws where your entire focus is on your hand. Good luck out there! I wish you the best 👍🏻

I’m only guessing but you’re probably moving the handle across the shaft of the javelin as you’re throwing. Try overcompensating by purposefully throwing the tail to the right. Train yourself to control the javelin and force it to do what you want. A few days of light throws just playing around will help a lot.
