Back in 1993 Soundgarden appeared on Bill Nye: Science Guy to show off their production/mixing techniques for an episode about "Sound."
This particular episode featured the science of sound recording and the producers wanted to film a band recording a song in the studio. Just so happens that Soundgarden at this time were putting the final touches on their up-coming album.
The group and their engineer, Adam Kasper, talk about techniques of mixing and recording. They also belted out the song ‘Kick Stand.’
Kim Thayil: Bill Nye was compiling an episode about sound, and they asked if they could get a peek at the machinations of a recording studio and we said yes. They got some video footage of the band and Adam Kasper hanging around by the mixing board. I think we described the whole recording process as being a giant drinking straw.
Ben Shepherd: So Bill Nye the Science Guy came in and we did “Kickstand” for them. I think it was right before we started mixing, so the record was done and we did a whole segment. Yeah, that’s a weird episode of Bill Nye, talking about sound with Soundgarden.
Kim Thayil: We always had a warm spot for kids’ educational television. We always said if we were asked to do something on Sesame Street, we would do it, and that’s no joke.

I like how matt jokes about kickstand being a hit single
He might not have been kidding. Maybe they thought that was going to be the one.
That song is still awesome. Was it a hit? No. But I have damn fond memories of rocking out to it.
Kickstand totally should’ve been a hit
He was definitely joking, I remember Chris saying that he wasn’t sure the charts had room for a hard rock album anymore but since In Utero had done well he was somewhat confident. Im sure matt knew Kickstand was a little too heavy for the mainstream
It was somewhat of a hit single in that it was used for the Roadrash game back in 94 and it was the best Roadrash ever. Everyone had that game back then.
Man just hearing Chris Cornells vocals isolated was insane. Dude had power.
Juggalo Trey_23 it was insane!
His voice actually destroyed *five* Neumann U87 microphones.
RIP Chris Cornell
I love how Matt's still got a hint of a SoCal surfer dude accent.
Growing up when I did, I'm very disappointed that I never saw this episode in school. Nobody else listened to the kind of music that I did but I could have been like "that's my favorite band!!!"
I learned with PJ and especially Neil Young don't give a shit for what others think about my taste or favorite bands, SG is one hell of a band, never got tired to listened to them!!
When we saw this is is class I yelled Soundgarden when i saw that record
Sydney Lusk yeah I remember seeing this in class two years ago when I barely knew who Soundgarden was
Same brother
Same
I remember watching this episode in 8th grade and seeing soundgarden on it. Wasn’t really a fan, nor did I know much of the band back then. Today Chris Cornell is a big inspiration in my life! I came back to watch this Bill Nye again and I definitely recognized the song Kickstand. Rest In Peace Chris!
I also saw this in in 8th grade, and I freaked out because I loved soundgarden and everyone I knew was listening to rap which I hadn't yet appreciated
Honestly didn’t expect soundgarden in bill nye in my science class today but hey why not
Bill Nye is a big Soundgarden fan. That’s why they are on his show.
This album is sick. A classic!
i remember watching this in class in third grade. cool shit
Watched this in 6th Grade Science Class. Can’t believe how closely I remembered this with the drum eq
Classic but saddening CC isn't in the video!! RIP that man
He actually is. For like a split second. Between 0:12 & 0:13. Have a look.
That’s Ben. Anyway, good to see this again. Cheers for the reminder!
@@barnabu5 ah. Looked very much like Chris from the side. ✌🏽
@@TheViolinRoom I thought it was Chris too bro don’t worry
That's because Chris recorded his Vocals all by himself in the studio
My introduction to sound garden and grunge was all thanks to this Bill Nye episode. They finished the episode with a Spoonman parody.
That little blip they added at 1:31 cracks me up. I don't know if it's the Huh? that gets me or the fact it sounds like hes singing Jews to fill my cup!
Atticus Reid ahhh stop D; that's all I can hear when I listen to the song now 😂 and I always was a little amused when'd he'd go, "mmMMMMmmmm". RIP CC.
😂😂😂I just noticed that 😂
Thanks to this video in my science class I discovered Soundgarden. I was already listening to nirvana but this took me to another place.
NO FUCKING WAY
MY SCHOOL WAS NOT COOL ENOUGH FOR THIS EPISODE
Sick! I've been trying to find this for years!!!
This album will pass the test of time three hundred years from now on, it had to happen, the tunes are fucking MASSIVE
And kickstand was never a hit single till this day
It was never released as a single.
This makes me sad but glad at the same time.
This makes me so happy
This song is awesome...Chris's voice THE BEST EVER... R.I.P. #noonesingslikeyouanymore

Andressa Rangel Bundy
He always recorded his vocals on a separate planet, not shown here.
Sucks that I couldn’t watch this cause of quarantine. We had to watch it online.
Here because I went down the Black Hole Sun rabbit hole due to eclipse on Monday... Then remembered Bill Nye is where I first heard of Soundgarden. Had to come here to increase the nostalgia 😂
CC very noticeably absent in this video except for vox...I remember even questioning "where's the singer??" when I saw this episode in elementary school.
RIP CC... Everyone stay safe as we watch his prophetically-hued hit song unfold before us this coming week lol
No frog "Yeah". Oh well.
Is there more to this or is this the whole segment that aired on the show? I want MORE.
So unexpected...
I was the 1,000 like in the video 😎 every time I hear this tune (kickstand ) and rusty cage I think of road rash for the original PlayStation lol
SO 90s!!
Not enough Chris Cornell
So this is Bad Animals studio in Seattle eh? Looks like a studer tape machine, and a contemporary Neve console.

No Chris????? Wtf??????
One of the weaker songs on the album but its fuckin ace! Shows you the quality of the album
No Chris, NO Soundgarden!
Me when I lie
Song name?
Lua Afanasi Kickstand
Their hit single, “Kickstand”. Went as high as #3 in the Adult Contemporary charts in 1984, before the band changed its name to Soundgarden. The 1994 version is a remake of the 1984 version. Hence, Cameron referring to the track as their “hit single”.
@@Fakename70 What was the original name?
@@deb7386he was probably messing with you. Soundgarden wasn't a thing in 1984
@@The_Man_Who_Sold_the_World.they formed in 84
They should've played the Day I Tried To Live or Fell On Black Days to introduce kids to even better songs
i aint gonna lie that snare sounds kinda trash...
I think your ears are kinda trash...
