    I was the Singer of the band (Sunburn) Hawaii who opened up for their last show in Hawaii. My first big show, watching my favorite band break up in front of me. Such a surreal night that still is a blur. See you in heaven Chris.

      Also I was hanging out with Ben Shepherd 2 days before at the former Red Lion Waikiki. And he said he was cynical and didn’t want to talk about the tour or the upcoming show. ( my biggest most important show of my Life) then he hit on my girlfriend. Lol crazy. Wow

    It's rare to hear someone speak candidly about soundgarden. The story has always been that Ben was frustrated because his equipment broke down. Seems that wasn't the case.

    • @ObsidianLife
      @ObsidianLife 11 месяцев назад +10

      Yeah, I was at the Oakland show a few days before...Ben (who has become one of my favorite Bass players and is a BRILLIANT musician) was CLEARLY in a bad place...he stopped playing during "Jesus Christ Pose" and started pointing his bass at the sound board like a riffle...then he threw down his Bass and stormed off stage.
      Having been a roadie, I never bought the "equipment" excuse. A band at that scale has back ups. He was just going through a mental illness phase. He seemed MUCH better during the second wave of SG. Hope he's good today...

    Ben was unstable the whole tour of 96-97. Saw them live in Munich in 96, someone snuck in a(n) (analog) camera and took pictures. Ben freaked out (Kim offered him a cigarette, he refused) playing half the show sulking on the bass cabinet with his back towards the audience. Oh and he broke a GLASS!!! water bottle on stage too. What a prick.

Many artists struggle for a plethora of reasons and frankly it’s no one else’s business. The SG boys are good people, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

    Music history proves that all bands go through a "Moment of Truth", when the worst of everyone surfaces, and the band might end. Because of a broad range of reasons, some survive while others end. If they survive, it's likely the band will last for years to come (like Pearl Jam).
    But the True Story in this story, is that the business side of music is what truly "kills" some people, and it seemed that Ben was the first to "die". Of course our good Wood won't say it, because He Is "The Industry", so to speak. But that's the truth in this story, and many others: When Music becomes " A Job", some end walking away "The Job" as many of us have done before, when the job is no longer of our liking 🚬

    Ben Shepard did mention having failed relationships with women and living in his car after the band broke up.
    As for Kim, he might’ve gotten too comfortable talking to this guy about what it’s like to be a poc in America, especially in the south. He’s older than I and has seen much more bigotry, I’m sure. Being a darker skinned person, I’ve experienced racism even in a northern state.

      He had multiple other projects, most involving Matt Cameron.
      They were still in Hater and Well Water Conspiracy. The two of them toured with Mark Lanigan in 2000 while Matt was on break from Pearl Jam.
      Ben had a studio in the Sodo district as well as his studio in Bainbridge. He was involved in plenty of collaborative projects as well as his solo HBS album before reuniting with SG.
