We need to go back, Why? Stop letting nostalgia bring up sh!tty assessments such as these, not every cartoon needs a message, and the ones that still do are still doing it but y'all still resentful, its sad.
As a non-Black kid who grew up in the same era, I am too. Shows like this one break down barriers literally in episodes like these and figuratively but letting the world see each other as people. Because we wouldn't see each other otherwise depending on where and how we live and who our parents are.
Richie: "I'm really glad to see that you and my dad are getting along now!" Virgil: "Yeah. You know, Richie? When I first met your father, I had the feeling that the absurd and senseless hatred that humans have for each other would always be tormenting us, but now, I believe and can proudly say that before us there's a bright future in which we can all embrace each other and holdvour hands like bro...Why is your father burning a cross in my garden?"
God I wish I could watch this show. I like when shows have characters that aren't like extremely known characters. Theses clips plus people talking about it is really how I found out about it. It tackles hard things like racism in a good way. It has it's way of basically people accepting one another at the end. Good story plus a good lesson on hard stuff. I wish more shows now a days were like it.
Loved this show. Man, it really takes me back. Static was a great role model for kids in general, but at that time, I think was important for black kids to have that. But, he also had a dad. I spent a pretty big chunk of my life growing up in the hood. Most of my black friends didn't have a father in their life. They didn't all turn out great because of that. But the ones who turned out the worst, were the ones who not only didn't have fathers, but were surrounded by lazy, good for nothing, drug dealing relatives, who had no business calling themselves adults, telling these kids, everyday, they'd end up just like them, no matter how many rules they followed, or how many perfect grades they got, so they might as well stop trying, and help sell the drugs. People try to blame the school system itself, but those teachers were trying 100 times harder than any damn family member was, to help those kids. I'm happy to say that some managed to rise above what they grew up around. One even became a cop, busting the same lowlifes that tried to sabotage his future as a child. And I'm not saying it was just the black kids. I didn't have a dad either. I didn't get involved in anything illegal, but I grew up a lazy moocher. That's the way I was raised. "Why work for anything, when you can just pretend to be retarded, and collect disability from the government?" I never did that though. And eventually I got a job, and have been completely independent for a year now. I admit it should have happened much sooner, but I'm just glad it happened at all. Some of us didn't have the best role models in real life, but the shows we grew up with, like Static Shock, helped teach us to be better than others believed we could be. I know it seems unrelated to the clip, but I only say this to say that, perhaps Ritchie's dad was only like that because he was never fortunate enough to meet black people like Virgil's family, and he had his own life, and his own problems, so he never took the time to see that these kids turned out bad because of their parents, and that he was close to repeating the mistakes those parents made.
Now, everything is just gross barbed humor and forced comedy. Even Animaniacs had way more depth. And *THAT* show's entire premise was nothing but comedy!
What I love about Static Shock's addressing of this issue is that it tackles racism in a positive way. Mr Fowley's biggotry is wrong; no if, and, or buts. But Virgil and Mr Hawkins never take the "holier-than-thou" stance. They remember that Mr Fowley is still a person even if he didn't see them the same way. They don't talk down to him either or refuse to associate with him. BECAUSE of that, Mr Fowley can be reached and changed! It's so much more powerful than the typical attitude you usually get nowadays.
What I love about this cartoon is that it shows racist people as being people who can truly change their believes and become better. Other cartoons nowadays tell us to “fight back” “resist” when we should really be trying to do the right thing and let them know that what they are doing is wrong.

It should be obvious to never judge someone based on the color of their skin, the religion they practice, the lineage of their blood, or what part of the world they were born in. No exception.
Being a bad influence to people is wrong because it gets someone punished, hurt, and killed. If someone who is badly influenced is punished, or killed. Then, the bad influencers are childish.
People say shows like Steven universe and adventure time tackle social issues with cartoons but nah no way not like how they use to with shows like these
As I've always said, racism is never a good thing. That's what Mr. Hawkins shoved right into Richie's dad's brain here good. Now these were REAL cartoon series unlike the political nonsense crap of today!

As a white emo kid from the 2010s I wish I could've seen Static Shock in it's prime.
"Ignorant and proud of it." For some reason that line hits.
It's an incredibly accurate to real life. People stay ignorant and act like they're better than you because of it
Those who don’t learn from history are always doomed to repeat it
A chronic condition that all of humanity has always suffered from.
People need shows like this again. Because people didn't learn the lesson.
We need more shows like this in 2024

That entire damn thing Virgil’s dad told him is in point.

It's scenes like this that make me want to see a Live Action Static Shock film.
Colman Domingo would be a perfect fit as Robert Hawkins.
You really wanna take that risk after what they've already done with the live-action DC and Marvel films?
